Feliciana Chapter of LAAG now has a total of 20 members.

Lane gave a great demonstration on photographing art, which gave us a record attendance.

We have an all member show at McKnight's Gallery in Clinton for the month

of June and for July (the Red, White & Blueberry Festival on July 3-4).

Kathleen Simpson, a Katrina evacuee that has stayed in Clinton, is the winner of this year's Red, White & Blueberry poster contest (poster shown to left)

David Gallup, instructor for BR Arts Council

Grant plein-air workshop, painted this oil painting on location at swamp near Clinton at

the home of Carol Shirley. The resulting

paintings from the workshop will be displayed the month of July at McKnight's

Gallery in Clinton. David brought info to this workshop that is invaluable for unique compositions, capturing outdoor lighting with realistic, luminous color, and diversity

of values.

The East Feliciana Parish Clerk of Court office in Clinton is holding a show for the

month of June for Carol Shirley, LAAG - Feliciana Chapter President. They have

THE LAAG PALETTE SUMMER 2009

Members Voices I just wanted everyone to know what a GREAT workshop Judi Betts recently conducted! This was the first 5 day workshop I've taken through LAAG (I could only attend 4 days, but I enjoyed every moment of it ). I had to take leave to do it, but it was well worth the leave I had to take, and worth every penny of the cost. Besides thoroughly enjoying myself, I produced two nice paintings (worth framing) during the workshop. I can't wait to take Judi's next workshop. Caroline Smack and the LAAG Workshop group are to be commended for inviting Judi to teach! My thanks to the workshop committee, Caroline, Larry (for providing such a great place to work) and Judi for such an enjoyable and educational experience! VTY, H.Hershberg,AIA Vice president of LAAG

After being 100% rejected in 4 straight shows I just didn’t much feel like painting so instead started cleaning my garage. I found several old fence boards that I had salvaged from Gustav. Remembering a photo I had of an antique fish weathervane and decided that I might try to carve something like that. I vowed not to spend a penny, using only the existing pile of art supplies and hand tools I had. I wound up with 6 fish “weather vanes” and sore hands but had a lot of fun.

I haven’t named them yet, “The fish of Gustav Series” sounds a bit much for some old fence wood. But each piece does have a trace of the original wood grain showing. I used acrylics, oils, plastic milk cartons and cigar box liners. I did however have to spend $12.20 cents for varnish and whitening, whatever that is. I may start painting again as it is less dusty.

THE LAAG PALETTE SUMMER 2009

“The heavens are telling the glory of God; they are a marvelous display of his craftsmanship. Day and night they keep

on telling about God. Without a sound or word, silent in the skies, their message reaches out to all the world.” Psalm 19:1-3

“Original Art in the Park” October 3rd

LAAG will be hosting an "Original Art in the Park" art sale on October 3. This is an opportunity for any LAAG member to sell their artwork and also art supplies. Each artist who signs up will be allocated a certain amount of table space inside the Studio at the Park. Booths can also be set up outside. Artists must send in a $10 registration fee by September 1. More specific details will be released soon.

"Women Artists in Louisiana, 1825-1965: A Place of Their Own"

display through September 13 at the NOMA The NOMA and Historic New Orleans Collection have a combined show that started April 15 and the second exhibition will open in April 2010. Women Artists in Louisiana features painting, sculpture, pottery, silversmith, metal by more than 40 artists who visited or resided in New Orleans

from the early 19th century to the cusp of postmodernism. This exhibition bears witness to the impact of these women on Louisiana's landscape. Quotes from Judith H. Bonner write up are in The Historic New Orleans Collection Quarterly.

Step inside the mind of one of Denver’s most talented artists—and learn the step-by-step techniques of successful

painting—when Quang Ho’s instructional DVDs debuts this month. Ho's still-life paintings are widely known and loved by artists and collectors worldwide, and this intensive teaching series promises to be an invaluable experience for any artist, art lover or student. The lesson begins with "Arrangement with Amaryllis: Painting the Still Life with Light and Shadow.” Ho takes viewers through his entire thought process for painting a still-life arrangement: from setup, to lighting, to systematically breaking down the painting as logically as possible from block-in to finish. "Nuts and Bolts - The Essential information for the artist” is an invaluable teaching video that brings together nearly 30 years of Ho’s experience searching, learning, and teaching as an artist. Opening Doors Summer

Art Camp June 29 - July 17. 9am - 3pm

The Opening Doors organization provides an opportunity for students from the Gardere area who exhibit a talent in art to attend a four week summer art camp that is hosted by LAAG. Instruction is provided by artist/teacher Geeta Dave. Each year the students produce a large mural that is displayed at various locations such as the Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, the Bluebonnet Library, and the LIGO Obsevatory in Livingston. This year's project will combine an art and sports theme and will be installed on the exterior wall at LAAG's Studio in the Park. The camp is June 29 - July 17, 9am-3pm and LAAG members are invited to come see the students at work. There will still be open studio on Wednesdays. You are welcome to come down and paint and the students enjoy seeing the work of Guild members and sharing their talents with them. If anyone is interested in volunteering with the camp please contact Roberta Loflin at 752-2473 or [email protected].
