their bone structure is light. If a
Vata person is imbalanced, their
nervous system becomes jacked

Pitta is translated as fire, mean-
ing the bodily heat energy. Pitta
governs digestion, absorption,
assimilation, nutrition, metabo-
lism, body temperature, skin
coloration, intelligence and un-
derstanding. Psychologically
pitta arouses anger, hate and
jealousy. The small intestine,
stomach, sweat glands, blood,

Ayurveda is a holistic med-
ical system of healing in-
digenous to India and prac-
ticed for more than 5,000
years. The word
“Ayurveda” is a Sanskrit
term meaning “science of
life”. It was first recorded
in the Vedas, the world’s
oldest extant medical book.
Ayurveda teaches us that
man is a microcosm, a uni-
verse within himself. It is a
medical-metaphysical heal-
ing life science in which
practical knowledge of self
-healing may be acquired
by anyone.
In Ayurveda there are three
doshas which govern all
biological, psychological
and physiopathological
functions of the body, mind
and spirit. A dosha is the
energy that defines you or
your human constitution
that we are born with. The
three doshas are vata, pitta
and kapha. These basic
constitution of an individual
are genetically determined
and will remain constant dur-
ing his/her lifetime. It is the
combination of the five dif-
ferent elements (ether, air,
fire, water and earth) that
make up these three basic
energies: vata, pitta and
kapha. These doshas are pre-
sent in everything and every-
body, down to every tissue,
organ and cell. If all these
energies are in balance, then
they create health. However,
when out of balance, they
create dis-ease.
Vata is formed from the two
elements, ether and air. It is
the principle of movement.
Vata governs breathing,
blinking, movements in the
muscles and tissues; pulsa-
tions of the heart; all expan-
sion and contraction; move-
ments of cytoplasm and cell
membranes; and the move-
ment of single impulses in
nerve cells. Vata also governs

Devil’s Claw
(Harpagophytum procum-
bens) is a traditional African
plant found in the Kalahari
and Savannah desert regions
of southern Afri-
ca. It is the large,
claw-like fruit
that inspired the
name of this
plant. If we look
at the Doctrine of
Signatures, which
states that “a
plant that resem-
bles various parts
of the body
which can be used by herbal-
ists to treat ailments of those
body parts”, we can under-
stand the likeness of the
joints in the body to the phys-
ical characteristics of this
plant. Devil’s Claw is a reme-
to that of Ibuprofen and aspirin,
just the plant had fewer side ef-
fects, especially when the liver
and stomach are concerned. A
strong tea may be taken one time
a day for a slow but sure pain
relief. It can be taken by capsule
or tincture as well. There are still
certain precautions used with this
plant in that it should not be taken
if one is pregnant, has ulcers,
high blood pressure or on heart or
diabetes medications.
dy for joint pain, osteoarthritis
and rheumatoid arthritis.
Devil’s Claw is an anti-
inflammatory, analgesic, ano-
dyne and bitter. It contains
two active ingredients:
harpagoside and beta sitos-
terol. These are iridoids,
which are chemical com-
pounds that contain anti-
inflammatory properties. It
offers joint pain relief for os-
teroarthritis and rheumatoid
arthritis. It also benefits
lower back pain, knee
and hip pain, bursitis,
tendonitis and digestive
disorders. It also may
benefit lupus, gout and
fibromyalgia.
A study in France found
that Devil’s Claw
showed similar benefits “WE MUST

Food as Medicine ~ Okra I was traveling in Belize stay-
ing at a camp in the jungle
with a group of women study-
ing Maya Abdominal Mas-
sage, when the breakfast of
scrambled eggs and okra was
laid before us. Most of the
group exclaimed, “What’s that
in the eggs?!” I was like …
“Oh cool! Okra!”
Okra (Abelmoschos sp.) is
also known as ladies fingers
and if you don’t watch them
daily, they will grow to huge
fingers very quickly. Okra is
in the Malvaceae Family or
the mallow family. It is the
edible green seed pods that we
love to cook, pickle or eat raw
in salads.
Okra grows well in warm,
temperate climates. Just plant
it, and forget it. One cup of
okra is equal to 33 calories. It
contains vitamins A, B1, B2,
B3, C, E, K, folate, potassi-
um, calcium, magnesium,
phosphorus, zinc, and iron.
Raw okra contains 90% wa-
ter, 2% protein and 7% car-
bohydrates. The leaves may
be steamed and eaten as well
as the seeds can be roasted
and used like coffee beans.
This veggie is low on calories
and high in fiber.
Okra is very mucilaginous,
meaning it has a slimy, gooey
consistency when cooked. It
is beneficial to the digestive
system. It manages blood
sugar levels in Type 1, 2, and
gestational diabetes. Its Vita-
min K helps strengthens
bones. It helps prevent con-
stipation, colon cancer, sun-
stroke, kidney disease and
helps control asthma, skin
pigmentation, obesity, and
high cholesterol. It is a great
hair conditioner bringing shine
and moisture to hair and
fighting dandruff problems. Its
high folate content provides
beneficial factors to pregnant
moms, as it helps prevent birth
defects. In fact, the Maya mid-
wives told us that by eating
steamed okra 2 weeks before
giving birth made the mom’s
delivery much easier.
I planted 3 okra plants in the
garden and they stand approxi-
mately 3 feet tall, with beauti-
ful soft yellow flowers with
purple centers. The seed pods
grow upward, but if you don’t
check the plant every day,
those seed pods will get too
big, making for a fibrous, tough
meal. The small to medium
size works well, so try them in
your scramble eggs in the
morning.
of pitta. Pitta is formed from
the two elements, fire and
water.
Pitta people are very intelli-
gent and educated. An unbal-
anced Pitta person can be a
control freak. They tend to-
ward acid reflux and hot
flashes, because the fire in
them has become out of con-
trol. Therefore, cooling foods
will help them out such as
watermelon, cucumbers and
raw salads.
Kapha is formed from the two
elements of earth and water.
Kapha lubricates the joints;
provides moisture to the skin;
helps heal wounds; fills the
spaces in the body; gives bio-
logical strength, vigor and sta-
bility; supports memory reten-
tion; gives energy to the heart
and lungs and maintains im-
munity. Kapha is present in the
chest, throat, head, sinuses,
nose, mouth, stomach, joints,
cytoplasm, plasma and liquid
secretions of the body. Psycho-
logically kapha is responsible
for emotions of attachment,
greed and longstanding envy;
although it is also expressed in
tendencies toward calmness,
forgiveness and love.
Kapha mamas are the most
nurturing people out there.
They are the ones taking care of
us. They tend to be large, vo-
luptuous stature and move very
slowly. Don’t rush a Kapha,
because they will get there in
their own time. Kaphas need
to raise their metabolism, so
eating stimulating foods such
as cayenne, ginger and pep-
permint tea will help. In-
tense colors such as red and
hard rock music will help
with movement for that
Kapha.
Together the tridosha gov-
erns all metabolic activities:
anabolism (kapha), catabo-
lism (vata), and metabolism
(pitta). Therefore a balance
among the tridosha is neces-
sary for good health. So now
you may ask yourself: What
am I?... vata, pitta or kapha?
Gracilis is one of the muscles
of the groin. It is a slender
muscle that originates on the
external side of the pubic
bone and inserts on the tibia
or the shin bone. It is a super-
ficial muscle on the medial
side or inside of the thigh and
is responsible for flexing,
medially rotating and ad-
ducting the hip.
Adduction is the movement
of a body part toward the
body’s midline. Therefore it
is the gracilis muscle whose

action can clamp the
thighs together and there-
fore called the “anti-rape
muscle” or “the custodian
of virginity”.
Not only is it part of the
groin muscles, but it is
also part of the ham-
strings. Due to the loca-
tion of this muscle, it can
be very vulnerable to
strains and injuries. This is
an important muscle for
athletes, tennis players or
anyone using that fast
transition from leg to leg
action. It stabilizes and
rotates the knee inward.
It is very important to
stretch this muscle before
any strenuous exercise in
order to prevent strains
and maintain against inju-
ries.
