“Reducing meat consumption is probablythe most potent single act individuals cantake in the effort to halt the destructionof our environment and preserve our

precious resources...it conserves water, saves energy, preserves topsoil, reducesour dependence on chemical pesticidesand fertilizers and protects forests. All thiswhile improving health.” -John Robbins,

Diet for a New America.

Would you like cleaner air and water, more trees, a healthier body, an end toworld hunger, an animal loving societyand a thicker wallet? These are just someo the reasons why more people areembracing the vegetarian diet. No longerthe domain o lentil loving hippies, vegetarianism is a viable option oranyone who understands the personaland planetary bene ts o consciouslychoosing what goes in our mouths.

To Your Health!A shi t to vegetarianism by thepopulation generally would result in asigni cant reduction in degenerativediseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, in ammatory bowel disorder,in ammatory joint disease and possiblyeven some psychiatric and psychologicaldisorders. This statement is based oncurrent scienti c evidence” -Dr IanBrighthope, Physician and Presidento the Aust. College o Nutritional andEnvironmental Medicine.

Why is the vegetarian diet becoming so trendy? Are we just rebelling against Granny’s warning-“you’ll get sick and die i you don’t eat your chops!” Or has medical science proven Granny wrong?

Statistics show that vegetarianism is great medical insurance. Vegetarians have a markedly loweredincidence o arthritis, asthma, cancer, constipation, dementia diabetes mellitus, diverticulosis, oodpoisoning, gallstones, gout, hypertension, hypoglycaemia, impotence, in ammatory bowel disease, kidney disease, obesity, osteoporosis and peptic ulcers. Why is it so health promoting? Not only isa balanced vegetarian diet low in cholesterol, saturated at and chemicals, it’s high bre, vitamins, minerals and phytoestrogens o er protect rom the most deadly diseases. (NB: to editor-the ollowingup to “easier” could be chart orm)

Other ringe bene ts include:Longer li e -Vegetarian people such as the Himalayan Hunzas and Seventh Day Adventists have avery high li e expectancy. In contrast Eskimos who live primarily on meat and sh age rapidly withan average li espan o about 30 years, same goes or the primarily meat eating Russian Kirgese whorarely survived beyond 40yrs.

Energy edge -What? Aren’t vegetarians weak weaklings? Not according to Yale and Brussels Universitytests which show that vegetarians have double the endurance and recover three times aster romexercise than meat eaters.

Glowing skin -The high bre in a healthy vegetarian diet and the absence o heavy meat preventsconstipation so toxins are easily ushed out. The extra vitamins, minerals, enzymes, chlorophyll plusother goodies in the healthy vegetarian diet promotes a so t, moisturised and rapidly repairing skin.

Easy weight management -Vegetarians are our timesless likely to be obese than meat eaters.Loosing all that saturated at intake makes weightcontrol much easier.

HAVE A HEART

It seems animals are getting their revenge according toDr William Roberts, Chie Editor o the American Journalo Cardiology “When we kill animals to eat them, theyend up killing us because their esh, which containscholesterol and saturated at, was never intended orhuman consumption”

Do you have a amily history o cancer or heart disease? It wouldn’t be surprising. These two diseases are nearlyepidemic in countries with high meat consumption

whereas incidence is much lower in countries with lowmeat intake. Heart disease is the number one killer inthe US with 50% o Americans dying rom it. But there’sgood news or vegetarians as “90-97% o heart diseasecan be prevented by a vegetarian diet” accordingto the Journal o the American Medical Association. This is because a vegetarian diet is high in protectiveantioxidants, minerals and bre to keep the heartpure. Meat on the other hand is high in saturated atsand oxidised cholesterol which clogs up the arteriespromoting high blood pressure, arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, stroke, angina and heart attacks. Evenchildren ed the typical American diet have been oundto have atty deposits in their arteries.

But chicken and sh is OK I hear you say. Not so. Mostchicken has the same at and cholesterol levels as leanbee . Many sh such as cat sh, sword sh and troutare almost 1/3 at. Salmon is 52% at whereas shrimphas double the cholesterol o bee ! Fish do have thebene cial ats such as omega 3 and 6 atty acids but

they also contain the artery-clogging saturated ats aswell as some other nasty surprises...more o that later.Better to get your atty acids rom green vegies, beansand ax seed oil.

Now onto the BIG C...CancerWho doesn’t know someone whose li e has beendarkened by this tragedy? The speci c cause o cancer has alluded us up til now. But we’ve knownthe contributing actors or decades. Guess what ood

increases the risk o colon cancer by 250%? That’s right, meat. The British Medical Journal cites that vegies are40% less likely to die rom cancer and have an amazing80% reduced risk o breast cancer. An Everest o clinical

studies revised by the 1995 Government advisory committee on Medical Aspects o Food and NutritionPolicy came to the irre utable concensus that there is a strong link between meat consumption andcancer o the bowel, lung, breast, mouth, prostate and womb.

Why is it so? Vegetarian diets are high in cancer inhibiting phytochemicals such as iso avones andlycopene (in tomatoes). Vegetarian high bre ushes waste rom the intestines whereas meat tendsto constipate and putre y in the gut. Kelloggs corn akes mogul himsel believed that 90% o all

chronic ills lay in the sluggish bowels o a meat eater.

In light o this startling evidence the 1997 World Cancer Research Fund stated that a vegetarian dietcould prevent 100,000 cases o cancer annually in the UK. We’ll uncover the hidden carcinogenicagents in meat next.

Dead Meat“Every juicy morsal o meat is airly alive and swimming with the identical micro-organisms ound ina dead rat or the putre ying carcass o a cow” -John Harvey Kellogg, ounder Kelloggs

Lets ace it, most ood today is a chemical time bomb. Nitrition and taste has taken a backseat tothe agribusiness’ synthetic science o increased yield, attractiveness and pro t. O course there’s theorganic meat industry which is relatively healthier but it still has certain dangerous contaminants.

Eating meat is particularly daring roulette as not only do you have to contend with the arti cialchemicals, pollutants and drugs in ecting it, there is the added bogeyman o communicable diseasessuch as Mad Cow disease, anthrax, salmonella, brucellosis and worms! Could this be why workers inthe meat industry in the UK have ve times the average employee illness?

From birth to execution a livestock animal is kept alive and attened by a continuous administration o tranquillisers, hormones, antibiotics and up to 2,700 drugs. The hormones ed to chickens can make aseven-week old baby have the giant body o an adult. O ten the chicks’ skeleton can’t support its massivebody so they su er joint pain, de ormities and can’t walk. What does this do to us when we eat it? Arti cialhormones present in nearly all meats are strongly linked to breast cancer, heavy periods, ovarian cysts andin ertility. Guys aren’t sa e either. It decreases sperm count and motility; the average hamster today hasmore morphologically normal sperm than the average man. Interesting to note that organic armers havetwice the normal sperm o other men. Even i they do have enough swimmers the saturated ats in meatcan clog up the arteries in the penis so blood supply is blocked and erection is thwarted.

Don’t like taking antibiotics? Well you might think twice about you your next steak. Consumer a airsassociations have proven that there are traces o antibiotics in bee , veal, pork and chicken. 33% o all

antibiotics used in Canada are used or livestock and Australia is likely to be similar. We all know thatantibiotics can compromise our immune system leaving us more vulnerable to thrush and in ectionsbut did you realise that they create super-bugs in our system resistant to treatment? An example o this is the recent resistance o salmonella typhimurium to commonly used antibiotics.

What does it tell us when 75% o US chicken inspectors re use to eat chicken due to poor hygieneconditions? Chickens living in a cage o aeces or weeks o ten leads to salmonella which as Newsweek recently published is present in 23% o Australian chickens. Although there are 900,000 reportedcases o salmonella in the US annually these are probably conservative estimates as salmonellasymptoms are similar to the u. I don’t want to make you chicken but the bacterial in ection E.Coli’s

not much better. 10,000 cases o it were reported in the US in ‘97 as well as 400 people being in ectedwith it rom an award winning Scottish butcher, 20 dying. I you’re a child, pregnant or elderly thesein ections can prove atal.Who can orget the recent ootage o mad cows rothing at the mouths, eyes rolling and bellowing in

pain? Thousands o cows were slaughtered because they had a disease could have been preventedi they hadn’t been orced to eat in ected o al and meat in the rst place. No wonder the naturallyvegetarian cows went looney. Mad Cow Disese (BSE) is not a pretty picture. What we didn’t see waswhat happens to the dozens o people who get it annually. Eating in ected bee or bee productssuch as gelatine, bee shortening can give you with the disease which presents in humans as CJD(Creutz eld-Jacob disease.) The results are like a horror movie. People’s brains are eaten away romthe inside until a slow death ensues. Un ortunately cooking the bee doesn’t destroy the disease and

it can incubate in our body or orty years until symptoms occur. The ull extent o this disease will notbe known or many years. Vegetarians needn’t worry as they have the luxury o eating a meal withoutworrying about what it died o .

The naturally occurring things in meat can also pose a serious health hazard. Make bee tea by boilingsteak and you’ll nd it has almost the same chemical composition as urine. That means lots o toxinsincluding uric acid enhancing our chances or cancer, arthritis, kidney stones, gallstones and gout.

An animal acing the trauma and terror o slaughter releases stress hormones such as adrenalin andnoradrenalin. These put the body into a state o de ensive alert: heart pounding, stomach churning

and muscles contracting. These hormones are still present in the meat when we eat it, making usuptight, ear ul and ready or a ght at the smallest incident. Maybe that road rage maniac had turkeyor lunch.

Meat also contains arachidonic acid, uric acid and nitrates which promote arthritis, gout and periodpain. But how does meat increase Osteoporosis? Excess animal protein (high in sulphur amino acids)and acid causes the blood to become acid which leaches calcium rom the bones. This is why highmeat and milk intake countries have the highest rate o osteoporosis. Excess protein also causeskidney disease.

Once animals are killed esh naturally starts to rot and turn a greyish green. Preservatives and dyesadded to the meat to keep it a “ resh” red colour are digestive irritants and may be carcinogenic(cancercausing). The way meat is cooked is also important. Eating

2 pounds o charcoal broiled steak you get as much carcinogenic benzopyrene as smoking 600cigarettes! Heterocyclic amines, highest in chicken, are also particularly carcinogenic. So now youknow why vegetarians have a drastically decreased risk o the number two killer -cancer.

Something Smells FishyHave you been reeled in by the BIG sh story? The news is that sh is health ood that is good orthe heart and skin. Fish(in cold climates-not Australia) do have health promoting omega 3 atty

acids good or the skin and heart but so do other healthier oods. I you like a little saturated ats, cholesterol, mercury, lead, arsenic, petroleum, DDT, nitrogen, sewage, chlorine, phosphorus, PCBs,dioxin, salmonella, cholera, hepatitis, PAHs, radioactive waste and pesticides with your Omega 3’sthen I suggest the sh. I on the other hand you pre er to side step the possibility o a ter-dinner braindamage, liver tumours, in ertility, sterility, nervous system diseases, paralysis, kidney damage andeven cancer I suggest you choose the ax seed oil, walnut oil, to u, pumpkin seed oil and lea y greenvegies which have the added advantage o antioxidants with the omega 3 and 6.

Do you know where your sh has been and what its been eating? You might loose your lunch i youknew. The rising pollution in the oceans is carried great distances and sh indiscriminately absorb it all.

I the waters not sa e to drink, the sh aren’t sa e to eat. Fish can accumulate as much as 9 million timestoxins as that o the water in which they live. Shell sh are particularly absorbant with so many peopleapparently allergic to them whereas its probably the toxins they have trouble with. As much as 10% o shell sh are in ected with organisms that can cause hepatitis, salmonella, cholera and even death.

The Simpsons three eyed sh isn’t that ar etched!Ailments o sh and ocean birds are indicating the extento the crisis. Su ering rom skeletal de ormities, tumours, chromosomal damage, reproductive dys unction andradioactive poisoning they’re drowning in a sea o toxins.Male sh are starting to show emale characteristics -isthat why emale impersonators are so convincing these

days! Recently dioxin land contamination in Brazil pollutedcitrus pulp in Germany. What to speak o the radioactive

allout rom places like Chernobyl. Increased algal bloomsand red tides are evidence o the rising ocean pollutionlevels, even deep water sh are a ected.

I you’re pregnant you might like to take the advice o world health authorities who warn pregnant woman notto eat sh due to the risk o oetal brain damage, de ectsand developmental deviations. Extensive studies in the

Netherlands and the US support this caution.

An increased demand or sh and modern trawling andvacuuming methods o shing mean that there is a globalcrisis o over shing. Over the last 10 years the marinecatch has increased by our times and the most importantcommercial sh are in steep decline. Some species are soover shed they are becoming endangared, the CanadianCod are a good example. There’s a lot o unnecessarywaste and killing in commercial shing resulting in onequarter o the sh caught being discarded. A third o the

sh caught is made into meal or livestock.

Innocent bystanders are also victims with millions o dolphinsdying in tuna nets, about 44,000 albatrosses killed annuallyin lines, birds swallowing bait and hooks plus millions o other marine mammals such as seals, sea turtles and evenwhales die horrible deaths. Maybe we’ll think twice be orethrowing a shrimp on the Barbie knowing that or every onepound o shrimp sold twenty pounds o other sea creatureswere caught. There’s always a to u steak!

Although sh aren’t cuddly like puppies they still eel thesame pain. They have taste buds on their tongue, lips andnoses which give them acute pain perception. Their sensoryhairs on their backs allow them to register the most subtlevibrations. Being hooked and thrown onto their back hasgotta hurt. Maybe Pythagoras knew this. Sympathising withthe ailing sh so much he would pay the shermen thecost o their catch to throw the sh back to sea.

Fishing is dangerously depleting the marine ecosystem.Don’t take the “healthy choice” bait, you can let them o the hook. By keeping them o your plate and in the wateryou’ll be making a valuable contribution to preserving

the ocean or uture generations. Your body will thank you too.

VEGIEMAN to the worlds rescue!Imagine you’re sitting at the dinner table with an 8-ouncesteak on your plate, surrounded by 45-59 starving peoplewith empty plates. I you were having a vegetarian meal

everyone’s plate would be ull. This is the reality o thesituation as explained by Francis Moore Lappe in herbook- Diet or a Small Planet. Harvard nutritionist JeanMayer estimates that cutting down meat production byonly 10% would release enough grain to eed 60 millionpeople. While a child dies o starvation every 2.3 seconds70% o US grain is ed to animals. With proper agriculturalpolicies and less meat production global hunger couldbe a legacy o the past.

What’s the real price o meat? Every 1 pound o meatproduced costs us 16 pounds o grain, 35 pounds o topsoil (1 inch o which takes 200 years to develop)and up to 6,000 pounds o water as opposed to the 60pounds o water it takes to produce 1 pound o wheat.

Concerned about the rain orest and de orestation? 40%o the Amazon rain orest has been destroyed along withinnumerable irreplaceable plant and animal species inorder to graze cattle. Worldwide 50% o the landmassis used to graze cattle whereas only 1 1/2% is used orplant ood production.

As ar as the world’s pollution problem -70% o it is dueto animal “production.” The late Homebush abbattoirwas the single greatest polluter o Sydney’s coastalwaters according to a NSW Government Newlsetter.Contaminated runo and sewage rom slaughterhousesand eedlots are the main producer o eco-killing blue-green algae.

Vegetarians are making a step towards preventingdeserti cation o arable land, the destruction o rain orests and the wastage o global resources. This pro-active approach may be the only way to save our planet

rom the grave collision course its headed on.

time low during Babe’s box o ce success.Who would like to torture, kill and slice up their pet? Then eat it! How about shooting Babe, Bambi,Lassi, Flipper or Black Beauty in the head. No takers? Its no wonder. Why does societies scope orcompassion have such arti cial boundaries? We love our pets, zoo animals and “ avourite species” yetturn a blind eye to the millions o innocent animals massacred yearly. Why do we pamper one animaland cannablise the other as dinner? We eel or the victims o Bosnia and Kosovo but remain silent atthe violence going on at our local butcher. Maybe we don’t think that animals eel anything. Does a

dolphin who carries her dead baby around with her or several days eel love and sorrow? How aboutthe elk cal who gaurds the body o her murdered riend or two days, sni ng and nuzzling the deadcalves ace. The Prince o Wales Zoo recently witnessed a heartbreaking display o elephant mourning.Elephant Damini wept or 24 days, re using ood or drink in 44 degree heat whilst she lay with thebody o her departed riend elephant Champakali who died in childbirth. She eventually died romgrie . Its obvious to anyone that humans don’t have an exclusive right on emmotions. Animals alsohave a limbic emmotional area o their brain, they secrete similar hormones and neurotransmitters inresponse to situations, they have a developed nervous system and pain receptors just like humans. Doanimals experience joy, love, ear, anger? O course. The only disadvantage animals have is that theycan’t express their eelings using human language. Basic understanding o body language will tell

you what they’re eeling though. Eyes widened and rolling back in the sockets, heart beating rapidly, hairs standing on end, mouth rothing, muscles trembling, teeth chattering, sphincters loosened, legsshaking as they run, dive, hide, scream or their shells slam shut. These are just some o the symptomso ear- “the slaughterhouse dance” as one abbattoir worker called it. Do they experience sorrow andloss? Baby elephants who witnessed their amilies being killed or tusks wake up screaming in thenight. Cows bellow or days when separated rom their calves. Animal mates waste away and die o sorrow when separated rom their partner.

Humans have the capacity to exploit and abuse animals but we also have the skills to understandand appreciate them. Due to sel shness or moral cowardice we can abuse our power over animals. It takes courage and mercy to make a stance against the violation o animal rights as well as anacknowledgement o their own silent dignity. As author Alice Walker supported “The animals o theworld exist or their own reasons. They were not made or humans any more than black people weremade or white, or women created or men.” We can get so much more rom animals by loving themthan by eating them. And our Karmic Bank account will be much richer!

The entire li e o a captive “ ood” animal is an unnatural torture o arti cial breeding, viciouscarstration, hormone stimulation, isolation, an abnormally attening and arti cial diet and the longuncom ortable ride to the screaming nale. One out o ten will miss the closing scene as they die

rom stress or disease be ore their bloody end.

But animals are killed in a compassionate, humane way aren’t they? I’ll spare the gory details or thosewho don’t want nightmares. But i you ever visit your butcher again instead o pandering to his irtysmall talk why don’t you ask him how his goods made the journey rom baby cal to veal cutlet, rolickingpiglet to pork crackling, cuddly lamb to roast or loving cow to llet mignon. For the brave ones who arewilling to witness hell on earth, take a stroll down to your local slaughterhouse. Problem is unless youlive in the country it’s probably days away. Best to keep all that screaming and blood away rom people. It might upset someone! I abbatoirs had glass walls and were closer to home more people would bevegetarian. Why do you think vegie Paul MacCartney risks arrest by sneaking into slaughterhouses totake videos?” -its always been and always will be compassion or animals ” We love him yeh yeh yeh!

Even though religion doesn’t play a major role in many people’s lives today our deep-seated moraland ethical views are unconciously in uenced by religious conditioning. “Love they neighbour”, “Dounto others as you would have them do unto you”, “Thou shalt not kill” are basic character yardsticks. We may pro ess to honor these yet ail to apply them to our meek and de enceless animal riends.Do we think that a merci ul, compassionate God condones this mass torture and slaughter? Most o the world’s major religions and their earliest adherents strongly advocated vegetarianism. Generally, the older the religion-the closer to vegetarianism. Islam, one o the worlds’ youngest religions, isn’t

a strong supporter o vegetarianism but ancient Christian, Judaic, Buddhist and Hindu texts supportit. Modern denominations such as Seventh Day Adventists, Mormons, Quakers, Su s, Baha’i, Jainismalso endorse vegetarianism. Ancient scriptures embodying the message o major religions suggest that killing animals is absolutelysacrosanct and perpetrators will su er or their actions. But many Christian texts seem to supportmeat eating...the modern translations that is. Un ortunately with human’s penchant or “Chinesewhispers” and manipulation many scriptures have been conveniently mistranslated, watered down oreven edited to attract converts and avoid loosing ollowers who might seek out an “easier” doctrine. There are 19 re erences to meat in the gospels but the original Judaic translations re er to ood, not

meat. Even Jesus’ sh were actually vegetarian sh plant rolls- a popular ast ood in his time (makesbetter picnic ood than spoiling sh). In Genesis 1:13 he did say I’ve given every green herb or meat”.Emperor Constantine’s campaign in AD 325 was a classic example. He had all the negative re erencesto meat eating or drinking cut out o the Christian scriptures in order to win a popularity contest. Thelosers, as always, were the animals.

It seems that people were so attached to the taste o meat that great religious leaders made concessionsor them, with very strict conditions intact. Buddhists are only supposed to eat meat under three

precepts but even then the Dalai Lama says he sees no reason why animals should be killed or ood.Deliberately complicated killing regimes would at least reduce the number o animals slaughtered.Since both Jews and Muslims are banned rom eating the blood o animals the complicated 14-step“koshering” process o meat preparation was devised. This process subjects animals to pain and terrorthat makes a POW camp look like Disneyland. And it goes on even as ISIAH 1:15 says “when you pray,I will not hear you or your hands are ull o blood.” All the blood isn’t drained out o the meat anywayso they’re kidding themselves. It would be much more consistent to give up meat eating completelyas many sincere ollowers do. Is that such a big sacri ce?

Hinduism makes no bones about the karmic repercussions o meat eating. The Sanskrit word ormeat ‘maamsa’ means ‘as I eat it now, so it will eat me in the uture.’ Karmic retribution echoed byJesus when he say boys set a snare or birds and commented that they will be caught in a similarsnare in the uture. Makes you wonder about people choking on sh bones!

You don’t have to eat the stu to get karma. Those who rear, sell, buy, prepare or serve meat are saidto su er equally negative repercussions according to the Hindu texts. Pythagoras explains “he whosows the seed o murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”

In today’s world blowing o someone’s head while wearing a designer suit is cool. Why isn’t compassioncool? Escalating violence in our hearts is bearing out in our actions creating an increasingly righteningenvironment o war, pestilence and homicide. As Indira Gandhi, late Indian Prime Minister said“everything is related. Whatever happens now to animals will eventually happen to man.”

Spiritual vegetarians aim to puri y their hearts(o violence and cholesterol!), maintaining a lovingbond with animals rather than exploiting them or sel sh sense grati cation. The highest religioustruth is to cherish all li e and emulate God’s all-encompassing love and compassion. This promotesglobal peace at all levels.

The same place the power ul elephant,

Plant protein is pre erable to meat proteinanyway because meat protein contains moreacid orming sulphur amino acids which

eed bacteria in the gut unlike plant basedsulphur amino acids which are neutralisedby the carbohydrates. Vegetable proteinalso reduces cholesterol by up to 20%. AHarvard study ound that vegetarians wereconsuming twice the minimum daily proteinrequirement. Leading nutritionist Paavoairola ound in his numerous studies thatprotein was easily available to vegetarians.

Even the Encyclopaedia Britanica says“protein obtained rom nuts, pulses, grainsand dairy products is relatively pure ascompared with bee which has 56% impurewater content” Its easy to get Iron romplant oods and its assimilated easily withthe extra vitamin C and without all thesaturated at, cholesterol and wastes thataccompany meat.•

Bitter melon A very bitter vegetable which is taken rst in a meal to stimulate gastricsecretions and it is also taken by diabetic to keep their blood sugar stable.

Cucumber Sweet, heavy and cooling, cucumber slows the movement o ood through theintestines and is diuretic. It apparently helps to reduce toxicity due to alcoholand is applied to the skin as a cooling astringent.

Garlic Garlic possesses ve o the six tastes, lacking only sour. It is good in manydisease conditions, lowering vata and kapha and increasing pitta, but it shouldbe used in moderation during health as it makes the mind intolerant andincreases rajas and tamas. One o the reasons garlic is such a potent medicineis that it penetrates to all parts o the body very quickly. Its most prominente ects include aphrodisiac, anthelmintic, anti-bacterial strengthens thememory, improves the complexion, digestion and tissue nutrition. It has beenused to treat lung disorders, typhoid and diphtheria, to reduce cholesteroland to scavenge heavy metals rom the tissue.
