    meet the jury

welcome to the fifth az awards issue, our annual celebration of the very best in design and architecture. each year, we invite a group of experts to Toronto to plow through a mountain of submissions, in the hope of surfac-ing with a short list of exceptional projects and products. Hundreds of entries came in from near and far 720 in total, representing 43 countries. needless to say, its a big job that leaves the jurors feeling both exhausted and exhilarated. as Brendan macFarlane commented at the end of it all, its like a trawl through the sea of creativity.

First, a big thank you to the jury. all of the members brought their own fields of knowledge to the table, from product design (Philippe malouin) and interior design (anwar mekhayech) to architecture (Winka Dubbeldam and macFarlane) and landscape architecture (janet rosenberg). nineteen major award winners have been chosen, along with 47 finalists. Two new categories have also emerged: the Social good award and the environ-mental leadership award, both of which recognize projects that have spearheaded new frontiers for positive change.

collectively, the awards encompass an uncompromising breadth of talent and diversity. in the architecture category alone, the winners include a state-of-the-art design school in melbourne, and a community centre in Bangladesh made of bricks and bamboo. in the Design category, the products range from a smartly engineered task chair with no visible levers to a line of glass tiles handcrafted from crushed TV screens. What all of the winners and finalists share is that wow factor, often expressed on jury day with such words as stunning, fantastic, ingenious, and why didnt i think of that? congratulations to this years azaward winners and merit award honourees. You keep reminding us how great design can inspire, uplift and awe.

The brutish exterior of Renzo Pianos new Whitney Museum conceals surprisingly gracious interiorsbeauty in

the beastSince it opened in May, visitors have been flocking to the end of the High Line to take in Pianos new museum.

in an age of signature museum buildings that resemble large-scale sculptures, the new Whitney museum of american art is an anomaly. Designed by renzo Piano, it rises as a hulking mass at the southern tip of the bustling High line Park, where manhattans meatpacking District meets the Hudson river. From the outside, its no jewel. The 20,500-square-metre, nine-storey structure, which cost us$422million, has been compared to a hospital, a factory, a power plant and an ocean-going freighter.

but stepping inside feels like cracking open a geode, as the tough exterior gives way to a wel- coming environment of unexpected beauty. When you approach from gansevoort street, as most visitors will, the base of the building peels upward to reveal an expansive glass-walled lobby. From there, four elevators with interiors by artist richard artschwager and an intimate winding staircase lead to the column-free main galleries, starting on the fifth floor. levels 5 through 8 each have outdoor sculpture terraces overlooking the High line, holdout meat packing operations, and skyscrapers to the northeast, bringing the museum into close conversation with its surroundings.

over the years, Piano has proven adept at build- ings of all scales and styles: sculptural icons like the california academy of sciences in sanFran cisco; surgical expansions at sensitive architectural sites, like lecorbusiers notre Dame de Haut chapel in ronchamp, France; and industrial-inspired struc- tures like the centre Pompidou in Paris. The Whitney, with its imposing exterior of grey-blue metal panels, glass and concrete, clearly channels the latter.

it also pays respect to the museums former home on manhattans upper east side a brutalist, granite-clad behemoth designed in 1966 by marcel breuer, which shocked many of its neighbours at the time but has since been acknowledged as a masterpiece. The Whitney moved to its new site after 20 years of ill-fated expansion proposals (it is now leased to the metropolitan museum of art).

in many ways, the stout new structure recalls the spirit of breuers design, even reinterpreting some of the details, such as gridded ceilings in the galleries. i dont call it the new Whitney, says Piano, suggesting that his plan represents a continuation rather than a break from the past. That was a big challenge, because the building made by mr.breuer was fantastic. i loved that building; everybody loved that building. it was not easy to come in and to remain Whitney.

The museum contains over 15,000 square metres of indoor gallery space. Sliding partitions create more intimate exhibition rooms.

In Milan, the Maison Margiela boutique is swathed in a high-tech material with its roots in woodbent

    wood

cutting-edge couture and technology come together at the maison margiela boutique, in milans ber-chic montenapoleone district. now headed by the impossibly eccentric john galliano, the fashion house is famous for being experimental with its interiors. The predominantly white flagship store opened in april during milan Design Week, and the results are dramatic. Draped like a curtain over the elevator and covering the floors and countertops, a faceted finish wraps effortlessly from surface to surface. But what is it?

imagine a material as delicate and flexible as fabric but as rigid as wood. imagine it used as cladding inside and out, or to craft objects and furniture without a single screw. it sounds futuristic, but its not. Wood-Skin is the brain- child of four young multimedia designers and architects from local creative studio mamma foto gramma. introduced in 2013, the tessellated, ultra-malleable medium employs a unique layering technique. a synthetic textile or fibre such as nylon mesh is sandwiched between sheets of mDF or plywood with glue. The boards are then milled to a computer-generated pattern of polygonal tiles in varying sizes.

every line becomes a digital hinge, explains Wood-Skin co-founder giulio

masotti, which allows the sheets to bend into numerous geometric shapes. Todays software makes it easy to design complex forms, he says. But when it comes to producing large-scale objects, designers dont know how or they make a base onto which thousands of laser-cut pieces must be attached by hand, which is incredibly time consuming. Wood-Skin enables a 3D piece to be created and then rendered flat for easy transport. once on site, the sheets can be manipulated like origami to recreate the original form. masotti calls this process unfolding.

masotti and his team envision myriad applications for the process, even beyond its lavish use at the maison margiela boutique. it can be applied to aluminum, plaster board, concrete or ceramic, he says. meanwhile, they are developing two other projects. The firstis a customizable series of tables, lamps, bookshelves and chairsthat ships flat and can be put together without tools. and, in collaboration with miT, the team is working on a self-assembling table that snaps into shape at the slightest push or pull. if the prototype is anything to go by, it could certainly give ikea a run for its money. woodskin. com

The new boutique show-cases a glamorous use of Wood-Skin, an innovative wood-based material that folds like origami.

    Q&A: mA yAnsong

    BY john BentleY maYs

The founder of Beijings radical MAD studio wants large-scale architecture to embrace the landscapebAck to

    nAture

With the recent opening of a Los Angeles office, Beijing architect Ma Yansong, 39, has at last put down roots east of the Pacific. He does not, however, arrive as a perfect stranger. Ma is the quixotic, imaginative author of Absolute, the foxily curvaceous residential towers that put the Toronto suburb of Mississauga and him on the architectural world map. Acurrent rumour (which he wont discuss) suggests that he will soon craft another high-rise in the area. Be that as it may, Mas poetic meldings of nature and modernism in his dramatic, land- scape-scale Chinese projects make him an artist worth watching especially now that he has positioned himself to take on the North American market from the inside.

The massive Harbin Cultural Island, soon to be completed in northern China, emulates a mountainous landscape.

What kind of work do you hope to get now that youre in north america?cultural and residential. Thats basically our experience in china. We already have a mixed- use building in Beverly Hills, condos and retail on Wilshire Boulevard in los angeles, and a new museum underway in chicago. im interested in cultural institutions, like the exhibition centre and opera house weve done in Harbin, the northern capital of china, or like the competition we just won to design a concert hall in Beijing.

Your work frequently mimics nature the fluid lines of the body, shapes in the landscape and you have criticized contemporary skyscrapers as barren, inhuman memorials to power and capital. What ideas for tall buildings are you bringing to north america? The modern high-rise cannot satisfy contem - por ary needs. its too much about privacy and not enough about how people and nature can meet. right now, skyscrapers are containers. its about whats called maximum efficiency. in the future, efficiency will be about how long people want to stay in a building. We want green spaces court-yards, sky bridges, gardens where people can meet. in one of our tall buildings, we created a three-storey garden on every third floor. This is very efficient, since the people use the gardens, and so they become a community.

how do art and nature meet in your new harbin complex? The idea was to build cultural buildings in a nature park within a city. our architecture comes from this context. The opera house and museum look like snowy hills, and they will indeed have snow on them for half the year. They show how architecture can blend into the land, and the landscape. We designed a ramp on the buildings facade, so you can reach the top, an open-air theatre, like climbing a mountain. in good weather, the stage can be opened to the outdoors, so that the beautiful park and lake become the background of the shows.

Do you have a dream project you would like to do on this side of the Pacific? The one im working on now in chicago is my dream project. its filmmaker george lucass museum of narrative art, storytelling art, on the lakeshore campus with several other important museums. We want to make the building very organic, and we treat it as an environment. chicago is a modern city, its already there, so the design of the museum has to bring that modern legacy forward. i am curious about what future architecture should be. im about the cultural context. Thats what is important to me. i-mad.com

The BouroulleCs, Hella jongerius, Doshi levien, neri & Hu, Shigeru Ban and jaime Hayn these are just a few of the top designers who have worked with Spanish footwear giant camper. The company has invested heavily in design, for its retail outposts as well as its products and packaging; in the past year alone, it has launched a milan shop by Kengo Kuma, another in Stockholm by nendo, and a new line of shoes and coordinating bags by the campana brothers. That handcrafted collection was inspired by Pelotas one of the brands best-known lines in a release timed to coincide with the Design museums celebration of the companys 40th anniversary. The exhibition takes a tour through the decades, starting in 1975 when lorenzo Flux rossell transformed a 100-year-old family business into the brand we know today. With recreated retail spaces, graphic design and, of course, shoes on display, the show presents an impressive roster of designers, and steps into the future to contemplate how tech nology may one day affect footwear and the experience ofwalking. designmuseum. org

Few industrial designers have enjoyed as much success as londoner jasper morrison. after 35 years of creating pieces for such top brands as alessi, Vitra, Herman miller, and cappellini (which produced the Thinking mans chair, left), as well as his own Punkt, it seems incredible that the retrospective at the grand-Hornu is the first comprehensive review of his work. morrisons oeuvre, which displays a balance of function and aesthetics, is more than just the basis for a fascinating show; it also offers a great learning experience. cid-grand-hornu.be

    what the jury said:

There are some delicate interventions with this building. What could have been a simple box is invaded with extraordinary micro-interventions, like a pearl in the middle of a shell-like metallic thing. brendan macfarlane

the melbourne school of design is a riot of architectural gestures, aesthetic quirks and unusual material applications, all rolled in to one powerful structure, realized by John Wardle Architects with NADAAA of Boston. The collabor-ative proposal won an inter national competition in 2009 that drew 133 entrants, and the project reached completion last December, with the rare achievement of finishing ahead of schedule.

What guides the buildings form, and in par-ticular its unusual interior volumes, is the idea that the school itself should be an educational tool for the 2,000 students who inhabit it. The exposed internal workings and the construction site rawness act as an instructional living organ, to be seen as much as understood. The school is large, housing various types of study areas that encourage collaboration, along with lecture theatres, a library, a caf and two exhibition spaces. It also offers new links to the existing campus property, via the central Studio Hall.

The four-storey atrium serves as the main congregation place and the buildings most jaw- dropping feature, dominated by a prismatic, plywood-clad construction that appears to hang from the coffered timber roof, not quite touching the ground floor. Three intimate meeting rooms are contained within, making this muscular addition a rather large gesture for such limited functionality. One of its roles, though, is to bring awareness to the theatre of architecture, along with the contrast of weight and strength versus lightness and suspension. One local critic noted that some people might feel slightly uneasy with- in these small rooms, where the floor has a slight bounce. Its a detail that the architects likely understood as a mind-over-matter challenge, a way for the building to seem alive underfoot.

Equally unnerving are the in formal meeting spaces built in along the atriums perimeter, with vertiginous balcony views due to the almost invisible woven mesh balustrade. The net-like barrier stretches from the first floor to the ceil-ing and, we are assured, it is all perfectly safe.

John Wardle Architects, of Melbourne, Australia, has garnered numerous awards for highly experimental projects, from beachside houses to office towers. NADAAA was co-founded in Boston by Nader Tehrani in 2011. The mid-size firm is now overseeing the renova-tion and extension of the architecture faculty at the University of Toronto. johnwardlearchitects. com, nadaaa. com

sustainability is not simply a factor in how a project is built; it also determines how a building serves the community and perpetuates its own ideals. Dutch architects Gerrit Schilder and Hill Scholte ensured that their design for a community centre in northern Bangladesh would meet these criteria when they decided on the self-imposed restriction of sourcing all materials and skilled trades for the project from a radius of 25kilometres or less.

This meant using bamboo (an indigenous resource considered an inferior construction material in that part of the world) for the entire roof, the support columns and the wall and door cladding. It meant cheating slightly by intro du cing to the locally crafted bricks a foreign masonry pattern for stacking and arran ging called monk bond. In doing so, the firm managed to reduce costs while maintaining a connection to the regional trades. The 910-square-metre centre which houses a school, a bike shop, a workshop, a meeting space and a bank of toilets cost less than $60,000 to realize. Keeping the project local meant using recycled steel and corrugated panels, along with mango wood, increasingly popular for its sustainable nature.

Instead of imposing their building on the environment, the architects positioned it so the surrounding vegetation and a nearby pond would facilitate a cross-breeze to ventilate the classrooms. They painted the interior walls and window frames with naturally occurring colours that the insect population avoids; blue, for instance, is shunned by flies. And by sticking close to home for the construction, they barely left a carbon footprint.

In donating their services to the Pani Foun-dation, a charitable organization fighting poverty in Bangladesh, Schilder and Scholte wanted the process to stimulate further like- minded devel-opment; encourage more independent, locally supported projects; and, eventually, render both their contribution and the foundations work redundant. Through this initiative, a self-sus-taining community is emerging, one grounded in the ideals of sustainability.

SchilderScholte of Rotterdam is engaged in architecture, interior design and furniture design, with a focus on publicly accessible buildings. One of the firms latest projects is an office that features a 32-metre-long wall, stacked floor to ceiling with Ikeas iconic Lack tables. schilderscholte. com

  • NoN-coNformist is oNe way to describe Haffenden House in Syracuse, New York a beautiful misfit in a neighbourhood defined by traditional clapboard and shingled houses. Designed by PARA Project, it is a playful and gutsy solution to a relatively conservative brief: to design a self-contained writing studio and library extension for two poets.

Rather than replicate the original barn-roofed house, the New York firm, led by principal Jon Lott, devised a three-storey cuboid structure to sit alongside it, with a facade animated by rows of tiny windows, each one slightly askew. The 105-square-metre addition both contrasts and complements the main house while adding a vivid new dimension to the streetscape. Though the two sides connect via the second floor, the extension is otherwise a separate building, with a garage and a breezeway on the main level.

The exterior walls are swathed in a membrane of translucent silicon-impregnated fabric, which provides both privacy and light control. Inside, the malleable textile is repurposed as a curtain to cover a larger back window. This residential application of a material more often used in stadium roofing transforms the exterior by soft-ening the buildings crisp lines.

As extensions go, Haffenden House is radical. It delivers on the desired library and writing studio, but it also embodies a profound sense of freedom and luxury. The white floors in the third-level reading room invite lounging any-where, while a ceiling in gold leaf and a mirrored finish on the bookshelves bounce light through-out the space. On the second storey, a sunken tub at one end of the library takes reading in the bath to a new level. The deep concrete soaker doesnt interfere with the blank-canvas aesthetic of the space, which is purposefully devoid of furnishings and adornments. It gives the owners the getaway they were after, a place to clear their minds and think, right on their doorstep.

Jon Lott established PARA Project in New York in 2005 as an architectural studio where collaboration and standing out from the norm are key. In a published interview about his practice a few years ago, he said, Unless you make it strange, its taken for granted. para-project.org

    what the jury said:

The discipline of Haffenden House lies in its simplicity. The detailing is critical, because theres nothing but the detailing to create the space. I can certainly imagine the luxury of reading and soaking in that tub. janeT rosenberg

NaNtes, located oN the loire river, takes quality of life very seriously: the affable city enjoys one of the highest standards of living in France. So why not extend that ethos to its social housing? Laetitia Antonini and Tom Darmon of the firm Antonini Darmon, lent this positive mindset to the Oiseau des les residences, which put well-being at the forefront with large outdoor spaces, beautiful private surroundings and integrated community elements that define the mixed-use development.

The all-white main building rises 10 storeys to form a 45-degree angle, reminiscent of a boat sail and clad in solar panels. Framed-in balconies create a powerful geometric plan on the exterior, a hallmark statement for the Paris firm. The grid pattern is animated by a series of solid and open blocks, and the building further comes to life as residents open and close the full-height shutters in perforated aluminum. From inside, chunky supports and privacy walls frame views to the outdoors. Internally, the complex is divided into individual houses, duplexes and standard flats, options designed to accommodate different lifestyles, for both single dwellers and families with children.

At street level, the residence appears to sit atop an extended bank of garages and such public amen- ities as shops, open spaces and patios. Sculpturally clad in natural timber, the ground-level structure looks as though it is lifting the building right off the street. Repetition of the vertical wood slats and an undulating roofline help to soften the presence of the angled white tower, which feels simple, warm and approachable.

Antonini Darmons commitment to sustain-ability and the use of affordable yet beautiful materials has set a new standard for social housing, one that benefits the inhabitants and the larger community. Founded in Paris in 2006 by Laetitia Antonini and Tom Darmon, Antonini Darmon strives to build better, faster, cheaper. The firm focuses on creative, sustainable projects that transcend established norms. antoninidarmon. fr

  • Hylozoism, tHe belief tHat all things are imbued with life, goes back to pre-Socratic phil oso phers, who proposed metaphysical theo-ries about the inherently animate nature of air, water and magnets, among other things. Skip forward a couple of millennia, and the material world has been revivified, only this time through technology. With the advent of smart devices and the Internet of Things, the future has much in common with those ancient beliefs; however, everything we build for tomorrow will not only be alive, but also intelligent. Toronto architect Philip Beesley is a leading progenitor of respon-sive architecture, and his creation, Epiphyte Chamber, on display last year at Seouls Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, provides a glimpse into the shape of things to come.

Any description of his near-living environ-ment starts with mechanics servos, sensors and microprocessors before inevitably shifting into the biological terminology of glands and pores. The assemblage of thousands of individual components reflects lifes complexity as it strives to simulate, on a magnified scale, a basic level of vitality. Beesleys masses of translucent cells resemble clusters of microscopic phytoplankton made gigantic. Touching the fibrous whiskers that line the hanging tendrils elicits quasi-organic reactions that echo through the automated organism. It works through hundreds of simple responses to generate an enveloping experience of connectivity instigated by human presence.

Contemporary research into artificial intelli-gence is not simply in the pursuit of super-smart computers: it looks to primitive models of lifelike behaviour to replicate and interact with. The Epiphyte Chamber mimics sentience while spec- ulating on the potential of our built environment to become living organism. In an uncanny way, it uses advanced technology and digitally fabricated parts to bring us back to nature and ourselves.

Staffed with artists, scientists, architects and engineers, Philip Beesley Architect specializes in responsive and intelligent sculptural environments. Beesley recently collabo-rated with Dutch fashion designer Iris van Herpen on a line of computationally modelled dresses, launched in March during Paris Fashion Week. philipbeesleyarchitect.com

I belIeve In kIndness, remarked the late June Callwood during her last televised inter-view, in 2007. Soon after, those words became the sonic blueprint for a park in Torontos central waterfront district, dedicated to her legacy as one of Canadas leading journalists and social activists.

Designed by Toronto firm gh3, the park sits on a wedge-shaped 0.5-hectare parcel of land sur-rounded by a burgeoning neighbourhood of glass condominiums, and a lakeside promenade that is one of the citys biggest tourist draws.

A waveform sampled from Callwoods voice as she spoke those famous last words was used to map out the paths along the parks pink granite planks, and to carve out openings throughout a grove of urban forest. At one corner is the vibrant pink Puzzle Garden, clad in a thermal plastic vulcanized rubber, a permeable surface material made from reconstituted granules of recycled rubber. The bench sculpture, which gh3 describes as a crawlable, modern answer to the conversation pit, provides places to sit and talk and risers for kids to clamber on. The

Maze is formed by snaking rows of beech hedges, and at the centre is the Pink Field, an activity area framed by red oaks and covered with more springy pink TPV surfacing. In all, more than 300 trees have been planted, 89 of which are flower-ing crabapples (Callwood loved pink).

Raised pavers at the southernmost end form an urbanized version of a classic wetland, with a shallow pool in a continuous fill-and-drain cycle during the summer months. At night, light posts by Louis Poulsen, with branch-like lattice detail-ing, illuminate the park. Callwoods life and spirit are further embodied in a permanent acoustic installation by Steve Bates and Douglas Moffat of Montreal: sensors aimed at the sky turn the shifting cloud coverage into an orchestration of sound across the park.

Founded in Toronto in 2005, gh3 has earned accolades for both its urban landscape design and its minimalist architectural aesthetic. The studios portfolio includes such statement-making public buildings as the circular washroom pavilion in Borden Park, in Edmonton, which is clad entirely in mirrors. gh3. ca

    what the jury said:

Kinesit does all the work for you. It takes into consideration your weight and height when you sit on it, yet its extremely clean and simple. PhIlIPPe malouIn

Now that the cubicle wall has fallen, replaced by more loosely defined work environ- ments where cafs double as boardrooms, contract furniture has undergone a seismic shift as well. Kinesit by Arper, launched last year at Orgatec in Cologne, Germany, responds to the new office terrain by turning the task chair into what looks like an ordinary seat. Observing how todays best technological innovations are inte-grated, intuitive and invisible, the design team, Lievore Altherr Molina of Spain, decided to invest in its own soft-tech thinking by sculpting the mechanisms and command levers right into the seats profile. What is most remarkable about Kinesit cannot be seen, because its not there: no complicated levers, spring-loaded appendages or protruding knobs. The exoskeletal backrest has also vanished.

The polished aluminum frame is embedded with an automatic tension mechanism, meaning that the seat and backrest respond in sync with the users weight and pressure. Users experience continuous reclining movement up to 18degrees, and the seat breathes by up to 15millimetres to improve stability and circulation. Meanwhile, the backrest locks into three reclining positions, every nine degrees, and the armrests are stripped away, leaving a modest but supportive L.

Despite its outward simplicity, Kinesit meets performance norms, and it even fulfills safety regulations for workplace seating, including the European requirement that all desk chairs have an adjustable lumbar support. By tidying up the task chair and giving it impressive versatility, Kinesit is going places, as a valued contributor and a better team player.

Headquartered in Monastier di Treviso, Italy, Arper manufactures and distributes contemporary furniture for residential, commercial and custom settings worldwide. For years, it has collaborated with Barcelona design studio Lievore Altherr Molina to produce new furniture typologies and award-winning creative direction in graphic design and branding. arper.com, lievorealtherrmolina.com

  • like a master yogi, Grip uses its centre of gravity to sink into a grounded, statuesque pose. The movement reveals a new kind of built-in flexibility for the table, which strengthens and stabilizes as more weight is put on it. Designed by architect Troels Grum-Schwensen of Copenhagen for Randers + Radius, the three components assemble almost effortlessly into a free- standing piece. Each set of cast aluminum legs operates like a pair of pliers that pry open, then tighten around a central extruded beam. No tool needed.

This structure allows for the table to take on various configurations. Users have the freedom to space the legs anywhere along the beam span, and to change their positioning on the spot. While the various tops come in a fixed width of 80centimetres, the table can extend to an infinite length, only requiring a set of legs every three metres.

Flexibility is an appealing feature for any work environment prone to change, especially start-ups that can mushroom overnight, and that require space for hot desking rather than enclosed offices. Given Grips universal nature, its surprising that it wasnt invented sooner. Had Grum-Schwensen come up with the design sooner, perhaps children would draw tables differently today.

Architect and designer Troels Grum-Schwensen is the principal of Grumdesign in Copenhagen. He has produced over 40 pieces of furniture since 1989. Niels Kastrup and Lars Andersen established Randers + Radius in Hadsten, Denmark, in 1999. The studio is renowned for its architect-designed furniture. BY reversing the usual roles assigned to diffusers and other components, where the wiring is primary and explicitly decorative, Wireflow has cracked open a new topology, part drawing, part sculpture and part lamp. This groundbreak-ing series of pendants and chandeliers, each handcrafted in Barcelona by lamp maker Vibia, raises several visual tensions between presence and absence, transparency and luminosity. According to designer Arik Levy, who debuted the series in 2013, Wireflow manages to fill a room with a special presence yet seem weightless and unobtrusive.

Inspired by his own rudimentary drawings of chandeliers, Levy decided to recreate them as convincingly as possible as three- dimensional objects. One of the biggest challenges was to keep the electrical wiring as thin as a pencil line. Three-watt LED units encased in pressed glass diffusers proved to be the perfect solution, since

the LED capsules require only a very thin diam-eter of copper wire to conduct a current.

The volumetric shape can be custom or prt--porter, as each wire is strung onto as many square and hexagonal metal frames as desired, and the fixture is ridiculously easy to install. The only variable with the off-the-shelf models is the length of the cords.

Now based in Paris, Arik Levy has produced furniture and lighting for some of the biggest international brands, including E15, Desalto, Living Divani and Molteni&C. Wireflow is one of a number of lighting fixtures he has made for Vibia, an innovative manufacturer in Barcelona that regularly collab or ates with renowned designers. Levys latest lights for the company were launched in Milan this spring, at Euroluce. ariklevy. fr, vibia. com

    what the jury said:

I love the idea that the lines become a definer of volume, but they also provide energy for the light. Its like a piece of clothing, inthat its very likeable in a low-tech kind of way. Brendan macfarlane

Here, the architecture challenged the lighting design, and the lighting designers reinforced what the architect was trying to do. You hope for that kind of collaboration, but it doesnt always happen. With this project, its most subtle features are its strongest. Winka dubbeldam

The five conjoined buildings that together make up the Art Museum Ahrenshoop are a contemporary translation of the thatch-roofed houses found in the tiny northern German town. Designed by Staab Architekten of Berlin, the steeply pitched rooftops and exterior walls are also dramatically clad in irregularly bevelled bronze panels, which from a distance bear a striking resemblance to hatching. Internally, however, the backdrop for the artworks housed within is crisp white, illuminated day and night by diffuse light that emanates from skylights at the peak of the gallerys ceiling.

Principal Volker Staab, working with Berlin lighting studio Licht Kunst Licht, prioritized shadow-free lighting in the design. To achieve a constant level of light, which bathes the collection of some 500 works by local artists, the collaborating teams employed two modes of lighting. During the day, natural light filters through a series of prisms integrated into a skylight that runs from end to end in each gallery space. Sunlight bounces off the sloping ceilings to evenly distribute illumination. In the evening, LED fixtures mounted around the perimeter of each skylight cast bright light onto the prisms, which once again deflect it evenly into the galleries.

The artificial light can be controlled by acti-vating one or two lamps per luminaire, or simply by dimming. In addition, the design incorporates a three-phase track, mounted just below the luminaires, to accommodate LED projectors for accent lighting. The central lounge/porch and store are lit with warm atmospheric downlights; while the entrance is brightened by low-voltage halogen lamps. The result is a subtle yet masterful strategy that complements the architecture and brings the artworks to life.

Licht Kunst Licht has worked on over 600 projects in Germany, from shopping malls to private residences. In 2013, the firm won an AZ Award for the Stdel Museum in Frankfurt. Founded in Berlin in 1991 by Volker Staab, Staab Architekten is renowned for its works in the educational and cultural sectors, including the current expansion of the Jewish Museum of Frankfurt am Main. lichtkunstlicht.com, staabarchitekten. com

Crowd sourCing has launched some ingen-ious products over the years. One example is CRT Glass tiles, made from old television sets and computer monitors, when cathode ray tube technology reigned. With advances in liquid crystal displays over the past decade, CRTs have drifted into oblivion except that the harmful waste they leave behind is difficult to dispose of. For the most part, the material is exported, dumped into landfills, or stored in warehouses, where it sits waiting for recycling methods to develop. Paul Burns, a lifelong ceramicist who runs Fireclay Tile in San Francisco, set out to turn the grey glass into something useful. He spent years working out a process in which the top layer of the screen is shaved off, de magnet-ized, crushed into particles tiny enough to be melted, then handcrafted into brilliant, lumi-nescent tiles with soft, pillowed edges.

    In 2013, he embark
