by JUDITH KIMPAN The Romeo High School boys’ swim and dive team held its end-of-the-year awards banquet at Addison Oaks Conference Center on Monday, March 29. “It was a tough year, we had a good team, but not a lot of numbers going against teams with 40 swimmers,” said Coach Kendall Peake. He discussed the need for greater depth; having the swimmers take the sec- ond and third places in events. “We always have good divers, and this year was no exception,” he said. “We had great swimmers who improved individually, but our competition is stepping up in Macomb County. What really surprised me most this season was the guys’ energy; they just took right off. I was close to retirement, but this team renewed my spirit to look forward to another season.” Academically, the team had one of the highest grade point averages in years achieving a 3.62 com- bined team average accord- ing to All State Academic standards. The majority of the team received Romeo High School’s academic awards. Individual awards were: Most Valuable Swimmer, Matt Ruman; Rookie of the Year, Danny Abbott; Coach’s Award, Ben Winn; and Most Improved, Adam Cusick. Sam Kimpan was announced as swim team captain for next season and several swimmers were recognized for making the All-County Team. The 200 yard medley relay team of Ruman, Adam Rhein, Chris Faz- zalare and Kimpan was named “Second Team.” Rhein was named “All- County Second Team” in the 100 yard breaststroke, and the 400 free relay of Fazzalare, Ruman, Abbott and Winn was also named “Second Team.” A summer swim camp will be held at the Romeo High School pool from 2:30- 5 p.m., June 14-July 30. The camp is targeted for male and female high school swimmers where endurance training will be the focus. by RICK DESOTELL Observer Sports Writer With its pitching a bit fatigued, the Romeo High baseball team needed a lift Monday, and they got it from freshman Joe Gard- ner. Gardner (1-0) allowed two earned runs on three hits, walked four and struck out three in six complete innings for the win and also drove in two runs in a 5-2 win at Lutheran North. The win snaps the Bull- dogs’ four game losing streak and improves their overall record to 4-4. “Joe pitched great for us tonight,’’ Romeo Coach T.J. DeLamielleure said of his young right hander. “He gave up two early first inning runs and shut them down after that. It was a big lift for us after having our pitching run down a bit after the weekend.” Offensively, catcher jun- ior Jake Vecore went 2-for- 5 with one RBI for Romeo. Senior Jake Moore had two hits in four at-bats, had one RBI and scored one run; Spencer Szwejk 2 for 4, Kyle Reichenbach had two hits and scored a run. Nick Ray had one hit, drove in a run and scored a run and Zak Bellas was 1- for-4 with one run scored. Junior right hander Dane Davis allowed no hits and struck out one in relief to earn his first save for the Bulldogs, who host St. Clair today and Lam- phere on Friday. “I think we did a much better job of playing like a team today,’’ DeLamielleure concluded. “I thought we were focused and did a good job of tak- ing care of business.” Rochester Adams 6, Romeo 3: Friday, April 9, at Rochester, starting pitcher Szwejk (1-1) gave up five earned runs on six hits, walked three, struck out seven and hit a batter to suffer the loss. “Spencer pitched well,’’ DeLamielleure said. “He made some mistakes up in the zone that they capital- ized on. I was pleased with the way he battled and gave his team a chance to win. They were a good hit- ting team. Offensively, we missed out on a couple of opportunities with men in scoring position and it ended up hurting us in the end.” Ray had two hits, including a double, Justin Medley went 1-for-3 with one RBI and Davis, Vecore, Szwejk and Keith Biegans- ki had one hit each for the Bulldogs. Rochester Adams 13, Romeo 11: In game two against Adams, the Bulldogs blew an eight run lead to fall to the Highlanders. “We jumped out to an 11-3 lead and I really thought we got compla- cent, made some mental mistakes and let them back in the ball game,’’ DeLamielleure said. “Hopefully, we can learn that when you have a good team like that on the ropes, you need to make sure you put them away.” Gardner went 3-for-4 including a double and had two RBIs. Davis had two hits including a home run and had two RBIs. Szwejk hit a grand slam and Josh Reside was 2-for-3, with one RBI, one run scored and a stolen base. Chippewa Valley 7, Romeo 6: In game one on Satur- day, April 10, at Chippewa, Moore, Reside and Ray each drove in a run in a losing cause. “We simply struck out too many times in this game and our bats didn’t really wake up until the 6th inning. It was just too late at that point,’’ said DeLamielleure. Chippewa Valley 16, Romeo 6: In game two on Satur- day, the Bulldogs fell behind early and were never really in this one. “We didn’t give our- selves a chance in this game,’’ DeLamielleure said. “We didn’t get good pitching, we walked way too many guys and then didn’t play very good defense.” Offensively, Szwejk went 2-for-3, with one runs cored and one RBI.
