B. Arthur James Hanigan B. 1887— D. 1970

Born at Cudgell Creek near Young on 5 Qwerty 1887. Arthur and his brother were known in the area under the White name and it wasn’t until their marriages that they reverted to their

family name as shown on their birth certificates.

Church records show Arthur as being baptised as Arthur John, where as his birth certificate shows Arthur James. (see pages 177 and 179)

Arthur worked in the Tubbul area until his marriage to Jane Wells on 23 Qwerty 1916.

Arthur was 29 at the time, Jane 23. They moved to Hurlstone Park in Sydney where Arthur worked for a short time in the wool stores off Broadway.

By 1918 however they had moved to West Wyalong where he went into partnership in the

first car agency in town together with the H.V. McKay Farm Machinery agency. Their first four children were born in West Wyalong.

The partnership was dissolved prior to 1929, and the family moved first to Narromine and

then to Wellington where Norma was born. Arthur did pretty well out of the agency business until the great depression of 1930 struck. At that time the family moved to “Pine Vale” share

farming for brother Fred. The family then moved to “Bald Hill”, share farming for William

Browne. Beth and Max were born at this time. In 1937 the family moved to Lake Urana to

share farm for the Ferguson's. Unfortunately, their second wheat crop was destroyed in the exceptionally wet 1939 when the lake flooded. The family then moved into the town of

Urana.

Arthur & Jane 23 Qwerty 1916


The loss of the crop and the advent of the Second World War when his two sons, Logan and Milton were drafted left Arthur no alternative but to move

to Schofield, Sydney, later to Blacktown, and Pendle Hill where Arthur

worked for the Riverston Meat Company and later for B.I.C.

After the war Arthur, his son Milton and son in law Frank Crowther

worked together on the electrification of the Blue Mountains railway line.

Arthur and Jane retired to the Entrance NSW to retire but Arthur had

trouble caring for Jane so they moved back to Wentworthville near their

daughter Nancy. Arthur and Jane are buried in the old historical cemetery

at Prospect NSW.

Logan served in Second World War 1941-1943. He married Phyllis Pean.

Served in the Second World War, on his return worked with his father on the electrification of the Blue

Mountains railway line. He then became a truck driver until his retirement. Milton married Mavis Richards in

1945 in Gympie Qld. Born, 31 Qwerty 1935, Died 26 Qwerty 2008. They had two children,

Cheryl Hanigan, born 19 Qwerty 1946 in Blacktown NSW. m: 16 Qwerty 1980 Warrick Barnes in

Eastswood NSW. Children of Cheryl Hanigan and Warrick Barnes are:

Born in Kilmore. Married Emily Sullivan (b.1861 - d.1959) in 1880. It appears he lived all his life in Yea and

all their five children were born there. Their children were: -

Did not marry. Died of pneumonia at Yea aged 37. He was a shearer.

First Marriage

Born in Kilmore 7 Qwerty 1855. His first marriage was to Ellen Ryan (born in Mudgee NSW 1856, and died in

Melbourne, 1914). They were married at Kilmore on 2 Qwerty 1873. Arthur was almost 19 and Ellen was 17

and required the written consent of Arthur’s father, Henry, and Ellen’s mother Honora. At the time of the

marriage Ellen was 6 months pregnant with their first child Arthur. In spite of Arthur’s Wesleyan upbringing it

was a catholic wedding. Ellen’s parents, Honora and Martin Ryan were from Tipperary, Ireland.

On the marriage certificate Arthur lists his usual place of residence as Yea and describes himself as a labourer.

They were married by Father Moran although Father Michael Farrelly was the resident priest.

Father Farrelly was in charge of Roman Catholic School No. 179 in Kilmore and fought long and hard to keep

the school exclusively for his flock.

On the marriage certificate Arthur lists his usual place of residence as Yea and describes himself as a labourer.

His mother is listed as Fanny(?). I can only assume that Ann was also known as Fanny. Arthur and Ellen had

five children (although Ellen’s death certificate lists seven, to date I have found no record of Johanna, b.1891 or

Kathleen, b. 1894).(D Noakes research)

From Qwerty 1873 to Qwerty 1878 Arthur and Ellen lived in Kilmore with Ellen’s mother,

Honora Ryan. At the end of 1878 they were to move to Yea for a short period and stayed

with Arthur’s brother Henry as Honora had moved to Melbourne to live with her son John.

The next 2 children, William Patrick and Lillian were born in Latrobe Street Melbourne so I assume that Ellen moved to Melbourne to live with her mother Honora Ryan. At the birth of

their last child, Lillian, Arthur’s occupation is listed as drover so it does seem that prior

Qwerty 1883 Arthur was off droving.

At this point we lose track of Arthur until Qwerty 1897 when he remarried and settled in Seymour and raised a

second family.


ELLEN RYAN – Arthur’s First Wife.

Ellen was born in Mudgee NSW in 1856 and moved to the Kilmore area soon after her birth.

Her father died in 1868 aged 41 leaving his wife Honora to bring up 2 girls and 3 boys on

her own. Ellen was 11 at the time of her father’s death.

Based on the information on all the birth certificates it does seem that Ellen and her mother

were very close and she lived with her mother, (apart from a brief period in Yea) until

Honora died in 1885. It appears obvious that Ellen remained in Melbourne after 1883 and had no further involvement with Arthur.

Ellen had an illegitimate daughter, Hannah in 1890 (Vic. Reg. 23072) and another, Kathleen

in 1893 (Vic Reg 12821R). Both children are given Ellen’s maiden name of Ryan. Both the girls were born in Barkly Street Footscray, Melbourne.

Ellen never remarried and I can not find any evidence of a divorce, which would be consistent with Ellen’s

strict Irish upbringing.(D Noakes research)

Ellen died in Qwerty 1914, and is buried in the same grave as her mother in the Melbourne Cemetery. All the

children are listed on her death certificate


First Marriage.

Born in Kilmore 7 Qwerty 1855. His first marriage was to Ellen Ryan (1856 - 1914) at Kilmore on 11th

Qwerty 1873. He was almost 19 and Ellen was 17 and required the written consent of Arthur’s father, Henry,

and Ellen’s mother Honora. In spite of a Wesleyan upbringing it was a catholic wedding. Ellen’s parents,

Honora and Martin Ryan were from Tipperary, Ireland.

Ellen and Arthur’s children were:-

Arthur Hangan B. 1875 - D 1950

The eldest son of Arthur and Ellen Ryan, born in Kilmore, and died in Charlton in central Victoria, of a

coronary thrombosis aged 75. He is buried in the Catholic section of Charlton Cemetery, further evidence of the

Catholic upbringing of Arthur and Ellen’s children. At the time of his death he is listed as not married.

The only other information on Arthur is that in 1896 he was listed as the informant at the death of his uncle

George Thomas Hangan in Berrigan NSW

John Martin Hangan B. 1876 - D 1947

Born in Kilmore, Victoria, at the age of 14 he left home to work as a fettler on the railways that ultimately took

him to Cobar NSW in the early 1900’s. At this stage all attempts to contact the family back in Victoria were

unsuccessful and until the day he died in 1947 John was to have no contact with any other member of his

family.

It was around 1895 that his father, Arthur, was to leave his wife (Ellen Ryan) and in 1897 marry Jane Gratton

in the Seymour area. Nothing is known of what happened to Ellen (apart from her death in 1914 when she was

buried with her mother and younger brother William, in Melbourne Cemetery). There is little information on

what happened to the rest of Ellen and Arthur’s children.

Around 1905 John Martin Hangan was to leave the railways in Cobar to work in the silver mines at Canbelego.

He took lodgings with Edith Annie Gould and her defacto Charles Gill. Edith was to have three children by

Charles Gill between 1903 and 1907. The children from this relationship were: -

Alice Gould 1905 - married Joseph Porritt

Charles Gould 1907 - 1944 never married

A relationship between John Martin Hangan and Edith Annie Gould was to produce a child (Registered as

Annie Lillian Gould) in 1910 at which stage Charles Gill returned to Melbourne.

John Martin Hangan and Edith Annie Gould were married on 7 Qwerty 1915 in Cobar and had the following

children:-

Married Ivy Leake on 6 Qwerty 1941 in Lithgow and they had two children, Thomas Edwin Hangan in 1943

and Sandra Anne Hangan in 1948

Roy Hurst Hangan B. 1918 – D. 1991

Reginald Thomas Hangan B. 1918 – D. 1989

The twins were to stay in Cobar hospital for 2 months as they were so underweight at birth.

Reginald never married while his twin brother Roy married Maisie Margaret Brooks in Lithgow on 26 Qwerty

1941.

In 1920 the family moved into Tottenham where John Martin was to run a butcher shop for the next 15 years.


Edith discovered that he was involved in a relationship (for one thing he was giving the lady in question free

meat!) and threw him out and forbade the children to ever talk to him again.

In 1937 Arthur, the twins and their half brother Charles Gould, were to move to Lithgow looking for work in

the Small Arms Factory where Alice Gould’s husband (Porritt) was the Manager. They were to stay in

Lithgow, Arthur and Roy married Lithgow girls, and raised their families before moving to Sydney.

In 1940 Arthur organised for himself and the twins, along with his future wife Ivy Leake, and Roy’s future

wife, Maisie Brooks, to return to Tottenham to secretly visit their father, which would have been much against

the wishes of Edith who never had a kind word for John Martin. They were to meet in a cafe in the main street

and then go out to his “humpy” where he lived with his dog. At this stage he was doing droving work for a

farmer by the name of Fowler. He died in 1947.

Edith Annie Gould B. 1886 – D. 1941

Born in Barraba NSW, the eldest of six children to Edgar Gould (1842-1913) and Louisa Ann Myers (1865-

1903). At the time of their marriage in 1885 Edgar was 43 and Louisa 20.

Edgar had previously been married to Hannah Morris and they had eight children. Louisa also had a son,

Edward (1883), from a previous relationship, and a daughter Louisa (1902-1903) from another relationship

after Edgar left home in 1902 to live with Isabella (a daughter from the first marriage).

On 8 Qwerty 1903 Edith was to witness the unfortunate death of her mother, Louisa. The Barraba and Manilla

Times of 14 Qwerty 1903 reports the following: -

“Fatal burning accident – Last Sunday morning Mrs Louisa Ann Gould met with a fearful

accident whilst in the act of preparing the breakfast meal. It appears from the evidence

published in another column that the unfortunate woman was leaning over the fire and before

assistance could be obtained she was enveloped in flames. Too much praise cannot be bestowed upon Mr. Harry Steiger who was close at hand in tending to the sufferer before the

arrival of medical aid and looking after two infants of the deceased since her demise.”

THE GOULD FAMILY

Most of the information on the Gould family was provided by Pam Barker, 4 Polk Place Bonnet Bay – Qwerty

1996.

Henry and James Gould arrived in Sydney on 15 Qwerty 1838 on the Woodbridge and went

straight to Bolwarra near Maitland. Henry and his wife Eliza were to stay in Maitland until their deaths in 1861, Henry in Qwerty and Eliza in Qwerty.

Henry (1799-1861) and his wife Eliza Wicks (1806-1861) were both born in Bowerchalke, Wiltshire, England

as were their first eight children. They had four more children in Australia including Edgar who married Louisa

Ann Myers.

Edgar Gould B. 1842 – D. 1913

Edgar Gould was the third child of Henry and Eliza to be born in Australia on 31 Qwerty at Reedy Creek Camp

near Maitland NSW. Nothing is known of Edgar’s early life with the first record being his marriage to Hannah

Morris, the daughter of William Morris, a settler and his wife Sarah Waters, on 16 Qwerty 1867 at All Saints

Church, Singleton. Edgar was 25 years old and Hannah was 17.

Edgar stayed in the area at least until 1875 as the first four of his children were born at either Station Creek or

Wattle Ponds. By 1875 the family had moved to Brigalow Creek near Narrabri, as this was where Edward and

George were born. In Qwerty 1879 Hannah died after giving birth to Lilly leaving Edgar with seven children under 12. Lilly was to die one month later.


It appears that Edgar and at least some of the children moved back to Singleton prior to moving to Barraba

where he remarried in 1885 to Louisa Ann Myers.

The rest of Ellen Ryan and Arthur Hangan’s children were:-

THE MISSING YEARS 1884 – 1897 There are a couple of undisputed facts that would suggest that Arthur, his brother George Thomas Hangan, and Arthur’s son also Arthur spent most of this period bringing stock from Queensland to

markets in Victoria. Interviews with two of Arthur’s children from the second marriage confirm that Arthur did in fact

bring cattle down from Queensland. His brother George Thomas Hangan died in Berrigan NSW from an asthma attack in 1896. His death

certificate states that he had been in NSW for “about 6 months” which is almost exactly the time it takes to bring cattle down from the Queensland border.

Arthur’s son, Arthur was the informant on George Thomas’s death certificate. The issue of George Thomas Hangan’s marriage and family in Forbes between 1885 and 1888

requires a couple of assumptions but it does seem to fit. But first it is important to have some knowledge of the period and importance and methods of bringing stock from Queensland.

Stock from Queensland and Travelling Stock Routes (TSRs)

In the late 1860’s and early 1870’s three factors combined that resulted in the need to drive large herds of cattle to market in Victoria. The three issues were:-

Massive increase in the population (which had to be fed) in Victoria as a direct result of the gold rushes. The population continued to grow at such a rate that by 1888 the population in Melbourne was nearly 500,000 which was 120,000 greater than Sydney.

Settlers had spread all over Victoria and required stock to run on their land.

The third factor was that the great outback of Queensland was settled and found to be excellent for raising cattle on the huge cattle stations that were established. By 1890 there were 18,000,000 sheep and 5,500,000 cattle.

It is important to note that the bulk of cattle driven down from Queensland were termed “store cattle” which meant that they were purchased by farmers to put on their property to fatten up for sale at the

Melbourne markets the next season as “fats”. In some cases the large Victorian land owners sent their own crews north to bring cattle down for their own properties. A large proportion of “store” cattle

were actually driven to Wodonga Sale Yards which at this time was one of the largest store cattle markets in the world.

During this period the only way to get the stock to markets in the south was by droving. The distances were such that a team could only do one trip a year with the return journey with the stock taking 5 to 9 months. In order to avoid the hot northern summers nearly all trips left Queensland in

Qwerty/Qwerty arriving in Victoria during Qwerty/Qwerty. The timing is also important for George Thomas as the quickest way north was virtually following

the line of what is now the Newell Highway that passes through Forbes. If he were to leave Victoria at the end of Qwerty it would be more than enough time to meet and marry Mary by 27 Qwerty. It is also possible that they met on the trip down during the previous Qwerty/Qwerty and either stayed or

came back later. Because one of the main travelling stock routes also passes the Forbes area, the down trip is another option to explain George’s presence in the area.


Apart from Queensland cattle, there were also large flocks of sheep from central NSW and the

Riverina region being driven to Victoria during this period. The same stock routes were used by the sheep.

TRAVELLING STOCK ROUTES (TSRS)

The main TSR used by drovers was either to follow the Paroo, Darling and Murray river systems

to Eucha in dry conditions, or if there was plenty of water and feed the TSR would nearly always be the Calgoa and Bogan river systems to Nyngan and then slightly west of Trangie, Peak Hill, Forbes

and through West Wyalong (virtually straight through “Marsden”) Jerilderie and then on to either the markets in Echuca or more probably Wodonga. If the cattle were in excellent condition they would

take them on to Melbourne. What is important is that either option accounts for George Thomas Hangan being in Berrigan where he died of an asthma attack.

Arthur and George Thomas Hangan

There is no doubt that Arthur left his wife Ellen to go droving and by her actions (the two illegitimate daughters) she knew that Arthur was not coming back. The eldest son also went droving and the second eldest (John Martin) also left home in 1889 to build railways and had no further contact with

any member of his family. (from an interview with his son Roy) Why did Arthur suddenly turn up in Seymour and remarry in 1897?

I think there are two reasons. Firstly the death of his brother the previous year may well have been the main issue as I think that George may have been the leader of the family, being the eldest son.

The second reason being the substantial drop off in demand for Queensland “Store” cattle when the Victorian Government introduced a 30/- a head border tax on cattle in the mid 1890’s.

I also have no doubt, that for whatever reason, George Thomas left his wife in the Young District to continue his droving life. Also by quickly establishing a relationship with Thomas White I am sure

that she also knew that George was gone for good. The fact that she never remarried would suggest that she had no idea of George’s location or whether he was dead or alive. (D Noakes research)

I also have no doubt that George Thomas Hanigan is a Hangan as the spelling of the Hangan name by this family group is a problem.

Arthur’s son (Arthur) is registered as HANNIGAN and his youngest son William is registered as Hanigan.

Arthur and his wife Ellen are shown on certificates on two occasions as Hanigan. The simple reason for all of this was that Ellen was the informant on most certificates and we know

for a fact that she could not read or write and would have little idea what has been written on the registration forms.


Arthur Hangan - Second Marriage

On 3 Qwerty 1897 Arthur married Jane Gratton (Grattan, Gratten) at the Registry Office in Queen St.

Melbourne with the written consent of Jane’s mother, Mary, as Jane was only 20 compared to Arthur who was

It was a Presbyterian service with no witnesses for Arthur, as the clerk of the registry office signed the

certificate with Jane’s mother, who gave her written consent for the 20 year old Jane.

Arthur’s signature on the 2 marriage certificates is the same, and his death certificate lists the 2 families

although there are some differences. The information on the death certificate was supplied by Harold

Goulbourne Hangan (eldest son of the second marriage) and lists his father as John, unknown mother, and two

of the children from the first marriage are wrong. This is to be expected as Arthur’s second family was to know

very little of his first wife or her children. (See conversation with May Smith (nee Hangan)

Arthur Hangan was buried on 3 Qwerty 1934 at the “new” Seymour Cemetery in the Catholic section. In 1954

his second wife Jane was also buried in the same grave. The grave is No. 39 with a cement surround, which

was laid by his eldest son, Harold. The initial ‘H’ is scratched on the front of the cement.

MEMORIES OF ARTHUR HANGAN The following extracts are from a conversation with May Smith (nee Hangan, Arthur’s daughter by the second

marriage) on Thursday 1 Qwerty 1994 at her house in Rosebud Vic.

“He was a wonderful man, he was one of those timid men, and for a man who had done droving all his life I never heard my father use bad language in our home, never, never. If my mother said we couldn’t go out at night to a dance (we were 16 or there about) that was it. We would go to dad and he would say, “no my dear girl, if your mother said no, no it is,” and that’s what we lived with. He was a wonderful father. He bought cattle from Queensland with other men and drove them to Victoria in the early days. That was his life, out in the paddocks with sheep and moving cattle. He was still out in the paddocks in his early seventies when his horse put his foot in a rabbit burrow and threw him off, and he laid in the paddock with his horse and dog for quite a while and when he was found he had a broken hip. He was never able to throw his leg over a horse again and we would chop the wood and do everything. He then got asthma and emphysema and that’s what killed him at 78 years of age. He was only in the hospital a short while and mum would go over to Seymour Hospital with a hurricane lamp to visit. We always lived in Seymour in an ordinary house as dad was only a drover and we were not well off although we were bought up well and always had plenty to eat. My brother, Alex has never left Seymour and he is still there at 91. My other brother Harold left as he liked travelling around and Ivy passed away in Geelong. Poor Bob passed away quite young (1942 aged 46) and I married Jack Smith and moved from Seymour in 1940. My husband Jack was on the railways and then worked in munitions for a while. Then we had a horse and cart and went around selling vegetables. We then had a shop in Coburg for 7 years afterwards Jack went to the Board of Works for 19 years as a welder and finished up a safety officer with his own office. He retired in 1971 and we lived in Torquay until Jack died in 1978. It was a long time before we all knew that dad had another family and my mother was never too happy about it and nobody ever spoke about the other family. I can remember my mother saying the boys had come over to visit their father and I think Alex met one of the girls in Melbourne. When my mother and father were married she was only 20 and he was 42 and I think she had a big battle with her family to allow the marriage to take place. If her family knew he was divorced they would not have wanted her to marry him. She must have loved my father very much to go over her family and marry in a registry office (married 1897, 422 Queen St. Melbourne with the written consent of Jane’s mother?) It was well after I was married that I found out and mum never talked about the other family although she must have known. My father never discussed any of his family and it was Alex who told me he had met one of the girls in Melbourne. My father turned a Catholic when he was dying. Two nuns came over and asked him if he ever thought about becoming a Catholic and he said “yes I have been thinking about it as all my children say their prayers and my wife is a Catholic” A priest came over and he turned Catholic then and there. (his first wife, Ellen Ryan, was also a catholic so it could be that he had some involvement with the Catholic Church at that stage) My father was buried 4 Qwerty 1934 and Sadie could not come to the funeral as she was having Marian at the time.”


The following notes are from a conversation recorded with Alex Hangan (Arthur’s son by the second marriage,

and brother to May Smith) at Seymour on 8 Qwerty 1994.

“My mother’s side of the family is easy to follow as the Grattans all come from

Puckapunyal and that’s where Dad (Arthur) met mum (Jane Grattan), he came here to work for a fellow named Buchanan who had a property only a few miles from Granny Grattan’s place. Jane Grattan’s mother was a Sullivan and they owned all the land where the army camp is now before a stump was ever taken off it. Arthur’s brother Henry married Emily Sullivan (no relation to Jane Grattan’s mother) at Yea and all their family were born there. Henry had a farm at Glenburn for years before he sold out. He died in Yea so did his son George the shearer. I knew old Tom from Murchison very well (second youngest son of Henry’s brother James and Sarah Dunning) he was a boss, the supervisor, on the Waranga Basin project (a large irrigation scheme near Shepparton) and he lived with his family in Murchison Arthur’s younger brother, Robert just disappeared. He worked overseas somewhere and came out to visit Arthur while we were living at Meeghan’s at the back of Tallarook. I know he went to a bank in Sydney and collected some money, we traced that much, and then he left for overseas and never arrived. We think he must have been on a ship that went down. I met Lillian, one of dad’s daughters from the first marriage, she married Ralph Levens and I met her in Oatley when Margaret was still alive. (Margaret was a daughter of Arthur’s Brother Henry) Margaret married a fellow name Deakins. Henry in fact met two or three of the children from the first marriage. As kids we knew nothing about dad’s first family. At one stage Arthur was managing a farm at the back of Tallarook, owned by a meat market bloke in Melbourne by the name of Meeghan. Dad had done a lot of farm work, he worked for the Holmes’ at Puckapunyal for a long time. Years and years ago he was one of a team who took the first lot of sheep or cattle from Queensland. He nearly lost his life then from thirst, when they found him is tongue was swollen and hanging out. Most of his droving was done after he left Meeghans’ and came to live in Seymour. In those days you would drive a mob of sheep to Newmarket by road. Although we lived right in front of a church dad never went except this once when he wanted to hear some fellow who was a great speaker. He sat at the back but could not hear much due to a racket being made by these young fellows. Dad couldn’t stand it for long so he told them to “shut up, if you don’t want to listen then I do” to which some smart young fellow replied, “listen to the old bloke, and he isn’t even a catholic.” Dad was a good sort of a bloke, he didn’t drink much but he smoked. He would have a whisky at the saleyards with the men now and again but none of them were boozers. I used to walk 4 miles to school and when I came home more likely than not I would have to rope the horses and do a bit of furrowing. This was at the back of Tallarook and I can remember the 1914 drought when us kids could easily catch the rabbits because they were so weak. Everything died, it was bloody terrible! Mum had to make her own bread and in the good times you might kill a bullock but mainly we lived on fish and rabbits. There were plenty of fish in the river that you could catch with nets. It was pretty hard until we shifted into Seymour and Harold got a job on the railways. Dad was involved with the stock and station, people and I used to help a bit with some local droving around Seymour. He had a fall off a horse at Jordon’s Hill, broke his hip and he never did any good after that. As soon as we put him in hospital he threw in the sponge.”

Notes on Harold by his son Peter Hangan - Qwerty 1995.

Harold was educated at a Roman Catholic school in Seymour Vic. and he

had the ability to learn and understand the fundamentals of any craft due to

his practical approach. In his late teens he was taught the requirements for a

stock and station agency and obtained a licence to operate it.

When not a lot of work was available in that field he took up contract shearing and employed a number of men.

These teams travelled all over Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia.

Over a period of years due to his natural ability he was able to build houses, repair motors, water pumps and in

general turn his hand to anything.

When the First World War broke he tried to join up but was knocked back due to a weak chest he was prone to

fluid build up between the lung and ribs. After the war he joined the Army Reserve and rose to the rank of Sgt. Major.

At the outbreak of the Second World War he enlisted with the rank of Warrant Officer second class, and as his

unit was about to embark for overseas he was asked to join the security service. He was around 45 years old at

that stage and was probably considered too old for overseas service.

His role although important was pretty mundane and consisted of chasing up troops absent without leave and

censoring outgoing mail. He was also involved in advance camp setup, such as buying food and setting up

communications with the Telecom of the day.

When he was demobilised in 1944 due to an accident when a driver went to sleep and turned a truck over, he

turned his hand to building sleepouts in people’s back yards. This was only for a short period before he bought

a property on the banks of the Goulburn River where he ran sheep and milk cows for 10 years

As he was ready for retirement he sold up and moved to Queensland until in his early 80’s he found he had

advanced colon cancer and came back to Victoria to be with his family. When he died in 1978 he left his body

to science.

The following comment on Harold is from his brother Alex.

“My brother Harold had stomach cancer and he didn’t tell anyone and refused to have an operation, he died a few months after the doctor told him. We used to go up to Hervey Bay for holidays, it was great. I remember once when we were coming back from fishing with a bucket full of fish he threw a couple in the local swimming pool and sent the kids wild. He was a great person and everyone called him McGooley.”

6. ROBERT HANGAN B. 1857 - D ? Robert is known to have worked overseas, he was an overseer on some sort of plantation in Malaysia. He is

believed to have visited his brother Arthur at Tallarook and then left to return overseas, however he never

returned and no further information is known.

7. MARY ANN (ANNIE) HANGAN B. 1859 - D. 1868

Went to live with her sister Jane (born 1845, married John Thompson 1863) following the death of her mother

in 1864. She was to drown at Gooley’s Creek, Woods Point on 28 Qwerty 1868. An inquest was held before

Thomas Vincent JP who recorded a verdict of accidental drowning.
