Junior Bowls CHS Champion Year 10 student, Brock Edwards, was an integral member of the South Coast Zone Lawn Bowls team which took out gold at the NSW Combined High Schools State Championship. Brock was chosen for the Zone team after representing BCS at Warilla earlier this year. For the State Championships, he and the South Coast team travelled to Bateau Bay, where they competed over three days beating Western division 30-25 in the grand final.

School Band Rehearsals Our school band will now rehearse on Wednesday afternoons (1pm – 2:18pm) at the Braidwood Life Centre. This new day and location is to accommodate for staff and classroom movements around our Central School campus in preparation for the new build.

Students and their instruments will travel to and from the Life Centre in our school bus, for rehearsals with our Band Coordinator, Mr Steve Maher of Riffs and Rants.

Picture Book Donations Thank you to Tracey Davies for the donation of Alice Mabin's The Grower series of books.

The books feature aspects of rural life ranging from farming to droving and truck driving, and give readers an insight into various facets of our nation.

These books will also prove useful for classes studying the impact of the drought on agriculture.

Debating and Public Speaking

Twelve BCS students attended the Premiers Debating Challenge annual debating camp and regional finals, with our Year 9/10 team coming home with a second-place trophy after a split-decision by the judges in a final.

Jack Wasson was selected in our regional team for the Junior State Debating Championships at the University of Sydney in December. Tara Broso was also chosen as a reserve.

All our students would like to thank Braidwood Community Bank, the BCS P&C, Braidwood Lions and Brad Horwood for grants that help fund the cost of taking part in debating camp.

The BCS Year 5/6 debating team was runner up in a very well contested play-off against Bungendore Public School, after finishing on equal wins. Our students had argued that all school children should have a class pet.

In public speaking news, Anusha Bajracharya won the zone final for Legacy Public speaking, with Tara Broso taking out second place. In mid-September, Anusha will travel to Parliament House in Sydney for the State Semi-Finals.

Primary and Secondary public speakers will participate in the Braidwood View Club at the Braidwood Servicemans Club on Thursday 5 September, from 6:45pm.

Staff Profile – Lisa Croxon This week we introduce you to Lisa Croxon. Lisa has been part of our SASS team for a little over 7 years now. She is the smiling face of Braidwood Central School. Lisa handles our enrolment and leaving processes, she looks after our sick and injured children, along with other WH&S policies and evacuation practices.

BEF Scholarships Open Senior students heard from members of the Braidwood and Districts Education Foundation and the Braidwood and Bungendore Community Bank Scholarship Program about grants and scholarships available to them in 2020. Thank you to Dale Towell, Nick Fry, Rob Martin, Kimberley Byrnes and Robbie Bell for presenting to our students.

Students are advised to apply ASAP and direct any inquiries to Miss Whitford.

Primary Girls Rugby Two teams of primary girls participated in the Kezie Apps Shield in Batemans Bay. This is an initiative of the NRL to encourage girls to try Rugby League. The girls played against teams from Eden to Batemans Bay, with great sportsmanship. Participants learned new skills and enjoyed themselves.

Two of our students, Lexi Dixon and Zoe Campbell-Davys, were selected for the South Coast Rugby Sevens team.

Power of Persuasion Stage 4 English students have been exploring the world of persuasive language though texts that present differing perspectives on climate change.

As part of their learning, students in Years 7 and 8 participated in a global café, deconstructing ethos, pathos and logos as elements of persuasive texts. Students discovered that pathos is the emotional impact that different texts can elicit in audiences. In small groups, they have explored empathy, sympathy, apathy and antipathy.

Drumbeat

Our second group of students have completed the Drumbeat program for 2019 with Nat, our Headspace Queanbeyan Youth Worker.

Drumbeat promotes social understanding and connection through a team drumming experience. It is fun, safe, creative, engaging and rewarding. Participants lift their self-esteem, learn to work cooperatively and are exposed to the therapeutic and recreational benefits of music.

Braidwood Rocks Science Week This year’s theme for National Science Week as Destination Moon: more missions, more science. BCS students from K-10 participated in a range of space-themed science, history and mathematics lessons, including learning more about the roles of Parkes and Honeysuckle Creek in the Apollo 11 transmission, creating their own impact craters, and launching teabag rockets.

All students also decorated their very own moon rock, which will soon be released into the community as part of the Braidwood Rocks initiative.

Year 7 Taster Day More than 40 Year 6 students participated in our second Taster Day as preparation for starting high school in 2020.

As well as team-building and orientation activities, students participated in music, digital technology, critical thinking and science lessons. Feedback from students was overwhelmingly positive – they appreciated the opportunity to participate in hands-on learning. A stand-out favourite was the chemical reaction required to create sherbet with Ms Talbott.

Book Week Parade Students, teachers and visitors got into the spirit of Book Week for our annual Book Character Parade last week! A huge thank you to everyone for their effort with costumes and their enthusiasm.
