DON GLOVER MASTERS & CENTRAL VALLEY MASTERS THIS WEEKEND

by Bette Addington

BAKERSFIELD, CA--The 8th annual Don Glover Masters Scratch Tournament and the Central Valley Masters will both be taking place this weekend (Oct. 4-5) which is one of the big changes for this 2014 Glover Masters event but there’s more!

One thing the Glover Tournament Committee strives to do is try something new to see if it fits what tournament bowlers are look-ing for these days. So this year the GTC has joined forces with the Central Valley Masters and both events will take place at the same center, Regency Lanes – 820 Real Road in Bakersfield, to enable bowlers to compete in both events if they wish. Both events have worked to get sponsors to enable a worthy first place purse as well. The Glover Masters Scratch guarantees $3,000 for first while the Central Valley Masters Handicap guarantees $2,000 for first! Both events squads will complement each other so bowlers can bowl in both if they so wish.

That’s one change. Another is the Glover Masters moved their first qualifying squad on Saturday later to 12 noon which gives bowlers an opportunity to come to the event on Saturday and not have to book a hotel room Friday night. However, if bowlers do arrive on Friday night, Regency Lanes and Glover Masters sponsor Ebonite will be hosting an Ebonite International Demo Day from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. which will enable bowlers to practice on the Glover Masters lane conditions.

Saturday will be packed with tournament bowling as the Glover Masters kicks things off with the “A” qualifying squad at 12 noon (check-in is from 11 a.m. to 12 noon). NEW this year, the qualifying squads will be seven games instead of six and one in four (plus one alternate, if needed) advances to Sunday finals. The Glover Masters is again, open to youth bowlers as well as adult scratch bowlers. Entry fee is $125 cash and re-entry fee is $100. The “B” qualifying squad is at 5 p.m. Saturday.

The Central Valley Masters will have two qualifying squads on Saturday as well and they are at 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. Entry fee for their event is $60 and bowlers bowl five games in their qualifying squads and the Top 8 from each squad advance to a single elimina-tion bracket final on Sunday. Again, Central Valley Masters is a handicapped event (80% of 220). The first 300 bowled in each squad wins a brand new bowling ball! For additional information on this Central Valley Masters event, email them at [email protected]. or like them on Facebook.

Scheduled to compete at this year’s Glover Masters is 2012 Glover Masters Champion, Eddie VanDaniker, Jr. His wife, Nicole, is also considering entering which bring to light that we have not had a female Glover Champion to date. Maybe this will be the year? The late Leon Stroope, who was instrumental in organizing this event, had always wanted to see the day when a female bowler would tackle this event and emerge as the champion! VanDaniker’s career accomplishments include 24 years of bowling, (100) 300 games, high series to date is an 877. He has (4) PBA Regional Titles, was named to Team USA in 2013 where he achieved (3) gold medals, (2) silver and (1) bronze.

On Sunday, the competition will intensify as the Glover Masters Finals will start at 9 a.m. Finalists will compete bowling ten games of head-to-head Match Play with their last round being Position Round. The Top Five will then advance to a Step Ladder Final and the 2014 Glover Masters Champion will be announced around 3 p.m.

Also on Sunday at 9 a.m., the Central Valley Masters will conduct their third qualifying squad followed by the last one at 2 p.m. enabling any Glover Master bowlers who do not make the Finals to compete in the Central Valley Masters event.

Be ready to catch the finest bowlers in the western region in action this coming weekend at the Glover Masters and the Central Valley Masters in Bakersfield. This year’s event will feature a modified house shot pattern on wood lanes. Again, this year the Glover Masters is open to both youth and adult scratch bowlers. For further information on this event, like Don Glover Masters Bowling on Facebook or go to www.geusbc.org.

Bowling News is proud to bring you....

Many a mother worries if her youngster seems too in-terested in a sport, be it football, baseball, field hockey or bowling.

She may rightfully feel that a sport could have a dis-tracting influence on the youngster when he or she should be concentrating on the basics of education. There’s little need for concern, if the sport is bowling.

If boys and girls are bowling enthusiasts, they must learn the scoring and mathematics necessary. The math end needs close attention, and it can become a bit com-plicated when the youngster gets involved with averages, high games, high series, point systems and the many other statistics connected with bowling. In addition, they learn to count quickly and true, just to make sure opponents are doing it properly.

So, to keep their place as young bowling experts, they must pay heed to math.

They want to be able to decipher entry blanks and rule books, and they want to read the accounts of leagues and tournaments and the exploits of their bowling heroes in newspapers, bowling publications and magazines, so they have more concern for reading. Whether they know it or not, they become better readers, and more acquainted with words.

They learn how to win, how to lose, how to organize, how important team efforts are, and how it is just as im-portant to be an individual. And they learn that, sometimes all too painfully, and they learn without undue pressure on them.

Boys and girls interested in bowling can’t bowl all they want since most allowances won’t stretch that far. Many become a little more eager to do some extra chores around the house to earn some extra money to bowl some extra games.

Some take on a part-time job, and many keep score at tournaments. There, mothers have little to fear, a bowling center is a good place for a youngster to be.

A FATHER’S DREAM!!!NORWALK — In the late 1960s I started my love with Keystone Lanes. As a young girl my

older brother introduced my twin and I to bowling. Throughout the years we went through the Juniors program. In 1978 I joined my first adult bowling league. In 1986, while bowling, I met the love of my life Richard. Two years later we married. We joined the Paint Manufactures in 1990, a Las Vegas league.

Three years later we had two children. They grew up in the bowling alley. When my son was about four years old he told His daddy “when Melissa and I get older Dad we’re going to bowl on your team and win.” They now had the bowling bug. Throughout the years my children spent al-most every Saturday in Juniors bowling. Never forgetting the dream they shared with their dad. So in 2014 Melissa finally turned 21 and the team was made. A father and his 2 kids and a good friend made up the team called Find A Way. They bowled the eight-month long season.

Well, we went to Las Vegas and they won first place! It was so moving to see Richard and his children fulfill a dream. The kids are all grown up one married with a daughter. They still all bowl two nights a week together. It’s the highlight of our week! Thank you Keystone Lanes!

Sincerely, Michelle, Richard, John, Melissa Team Lawson

CALI, Colombia — Another record was broken at the 2014 Pan American Bowling Confederation Women’s Champion-ships as Team USA’s Missy Parkin and Kelly Kulick shot 2,861 (238.42 average) to win the Doubles gold medal.

Parkin put together a six-game total of 1,498, while Kulick added 1,363, as the pair rolled to the title at the Cali Bowling Coliseum. Aruba’s Kamilah Dammers and Thashaina Seraus won the silver, while Team USA’s Shannon O’Keefe and Dan-ielle McEwan took the bronze.

It was a stellar day for Parkin as she had games of 217, 296, 247, 225, 279 and 234 to average 249.67. Kulick fired games of 222, 258, 193, 204, 251 and 235 on the 47-foot Paris pattern, the longest pattern from the World Bowling bank of lane condition-ing patterns.

“I thought I might have some issues on the long pattern, so I’m really happy with how we both performed,” said Parkin, who helped the pair break the record of 2,780 set by Kulick and Shan-non Pluhowsky in 2010.

“I was excited to bowl doubles again with Kelly because last time we bowled together at the World Championships in doubles we got silver. This time we got the gold.”

Aruba set the score to beat on the first squad Sunday only to see Parkin and Kulick blast past it. The Arubans totaled 2,754 with Dammers shooting 1,461 and Seraus adding 1,293. It’s the first medal in PABCON Women’s Championships history for the island nation.

O’Keefe totaled 1,399, while McEwan shot 1,280 to earn the bronze medal with 2,679. The third Team USA doubles pair of Shannon Pluhowsky and Liz Johnson finished seventh with 2,559.

The Perfect Game by Steve FelegeAuthor of Bowlings Best Seller: “The Essentials of Bowling”

Carol: Happy Anniversary Stevie!Steve: What?Carol: It’s been three years since we started this column.Steve: Wow! It seems a lot longer than that. Do you remember when we were flooded with emails?Carol: Not really......I only told you that to make you feel important. Steve: Really?Carol: Never mind, but do you remember that guy who sent a letter asking us to get a national championship started?Steve: Oh, yeah! Didn’t he send us another letter last year?Carol: Uh-huh, and guess what.Steve: Don’t tell me.......he sent another one?Carol: Yep! Right on schedule!Steve: Well you’ve got to give him credit; he’s persistent!Carol: He’s more than persistent, Steve. He’s becoming downright insistent!Steve: Why do you say that?Carol: Just read this year’s letter. Here.....Steve: Ahem. “hey! another year has come and gone already and I still don’t see no national champs being mentioned in the bowling news! what gives? doesn’t anyone give a hoot but me? sincerely yours, (name withheld), san bernardino, ca”Carol: Any thoughts?Steve: Yeah, the “caps” key on his computer isn’t working.Carol: That’s not what I meant!Steve: I know. Look, we’ve covered this topic before and the establishment hasn’t picked up on it.Carol: So you think we should just give up on the idea?Steve: Absolutely! Bowlers don’t deserve a “Super Bowl” or a “World Series.” The sport has been taken over by elites who believe they own every aspect of the game, and the majority of bowlers are okay with that.Carol: Are you being serious?Steve: Well......no.Carol: You have a plan. Don’t you?Steve: Actually, I have several.Carol: Really?! Well, let’s hear them!!!!Dean: WE ONLY HAVE ROOM FOR ONE! I HAVE SPACE RESTRICTIONS!!! REMEMBER? CRIPES!!!!!Carol: Fine! Okay Stevie, you heard the man! Give me your favorite one.Steve: Okay, but you’re not going to like it.Carol: Are you kidding me? If it gets a national championship debate started, I’ll love it!Steve: Your readers won’t like it.Carol: GIVE!Steve: Okay, here goes. “By the powers vested in me by the bowling press (you keep publishing this column), and as a duly certified sponsoring member of the CBW (I paid my dues for the year), certified coach, former bowler, and owner of more than one bowling ball, I hereby declare the City of Erie, PA to be the first to bear the title of “National Bowling Champions of the United States of America”! Carol: What?!Steve: You heard me. I declare Erie, PA to be the first “National Champions” of bowling.Carol: I don’t get it!Steve: Look, there is no format for a team, or individual, to establish themselves as the premier bowlers in the United States, so the title must be conferred upon a city. Carol: Do you mean like Seattle is the world champions of football, or Boston is baseball’s world champs?Steve: Exactly!Carol: News flash: IT’S NOT THE SAME THING!Steve: Why not? Since the powers-that-be can’t seem to make it happen, I will! Because I say so, Erie is the bowling capital of the world!Carol: I beg to differ. I think L.A. is.Steve: Too late! I’ve already bestowed the title upon Erie!Carol: Based on what?!Steve: The caliber of bowlers here.Carol: Ours are better!Steve: Erie’s a small city but can put together a team no other city can match.........including L.A!Carol: Really?! Steve: Sure, just look at all the professional bowling champions who live here. For instance, we have Ron Palombi, Jr.Carol: We have Mark Baker.Steve: We have Mike Machuga, Bob Learn, and Mike Shady.Carol: Well, we have..........uhhhhhh, hey, Dean! Who are the other titled pros that live around here?Dean: Leave me out of this! Carol: All right, so you have a lot of pros! So what! This town could still put together a team that could kick Erie’s butt!Steve: Well, put that team together and bring ‘em here. If they win, they become the national champs. If they don’t, Erie remains The Champions of the Known Bowling Universe.Carol: Who’s going to pay for all this?Steve: I don’t know and I don’t care. Your e-mailer wanted a national champion and we just established one. Maybe he’d be willing to pony up a couple bucks to take up the challenge. Carol: And who’s supposed to coordinate all this?Steve: If anyone is serious about taking up the challenge I just issued, they can call Karen or Nancy at Eastway Lanes, here in Erie, PA. For years they hosted the most popular stop on the PBA tour. In fact, they were the reason the stadium-style format exists today.Carol: Steve, you’re a trouble-maker!Steve: I’ve been called worse<:-)Comments or questions? BOWL

BURBANK – This past weekend, I had the great pleasure (and pain) of bowling the NLAC Senior Tournament. As I struggled through a very bad set of three games, I found myself comparing the experience of tournament bowling to bowling league.

A feeling of excitement accompanies the tournament play that is not evident in bowling league. Brackets are usually offered as well as side pots and that ups the ante for one’s competitive na-ture. In the same vein, we bowl with people we don’t necessarily know well, if at all, and the smell of fresh blood is in the air.

The opportunity to show off and best a fellow bowler’s score is irresistible. I say this with fondness since I realize that I too, look like a porterhouse to everyone else! A huge part of my per-sonal excitement is meeting bowlers from other bowling centers than my own. My pair of lanes had seven bowlers from four dif-ferent centers in four different cities. How cool is that? I hap-pened to be the only female of the group and while that has ben-efits it also has humorous pitfalls.

For example, before we actually started practice, we were all kind of standing around and one of the male bowlers turns to me and says, “Are you our score monitor?” I replied rather curtly that no, I was a bowler. I had to laugh to myself thinking appar-ently female bowlers really hadn’t made as much advancement in equality as we may have thought.

All this being said, I highly recommend the occasional tourna-ment for all bowlers. Bowling your league is like visiting family while bowling tournament is like going on a journey to another country. Be adventurous, take a vacation!

of Rock and Roll (per Huey Lewis and the News), the home of the Browns, Indians and LeBron.

That first ball was rolled in 1954. Since then Terry has rolled fifteen perfect games and three 800s, with a high of 808. He has been averaging a deuce for years with a high book of 221. He is currently averaging 214. REPEAT AFTER ME: “Terry is a damn good bowler”.

Before retiring Mr. Hodgon’s career took him to varied parts of the USA and saw him develop into a Telecommunications ex-pert. He knows computers, iphones and ipads. He knows soft-ware, passwords and coding. REPEAT AFTER ME: “Terry is a damn smart guy”.

Speaking of smarts, let me give you some examples of Terry’s ENCYCLOPEDIC EXPERTISE: Can you calculate the square root of the earth’s circumference in less than ten seconds? TERRY CAN.Do you know the average temperature of Saturn’s surface at sun-set? TERRY DOES.Can you calculate the softness of a bowling ball? TERRY CAN.Do you know the speed at which a salmon must swim upstream, in the Columbia River, to successfully reach it’s spawning grounds? TERRY DOES.

Now you know why I say Terry is darn smart and a darn good bowler. He knows a lot, he bowls a lot, he’s a darn good friend.

Conti and Jordan Jr. Take Opening Day Titles

by David Yamauchi

LAKEWOOD — The Junior Amateur Tour started off the 2014-2015 with a bang at Cal Bowl last weekend. It was great to see the familiar and the new faces hit the lanes for a new season of JAT competition.

In the Farm Club, it was nice to see some fresh blood to take the place of the bowlers moving up to Open Division. In qualify-ing, Michael Conti lapped the field at -7, followed by Eric Schuk-sta -92, Nick Caner -107 and Julian Zavala -114. Low to qualify was Michaela Buhain at -187. High scores included Michael Conti 237, Nick Caner 237, Kevin Banaag 222, Samuel Martinez 221, Erick Schuksta 220, and Soloman Salama 211. In Match Play, Conti came out screaming with a 254 start and went 4-1 to lead the field at +88. Caner used a 221 and 217 and 5 wins to take the 2nd seed at +50 followed by Reigh Abaoag who put up a nice 259 to jump to take the last rolloff spot. Other high games in Match Play included Salama 232-218. In the stepladder rolloffs, Nick Caner struck past Reigh Abaoag 212-159 to advance to the Championship Match against leader Michael Conti. The game was close until a missed spare put Caner behind and Michael Conti jumped on the opportunity with a 213-178 win for the title. Congratulations Michael!

In the Open Division, some old and some new Farm gradu-ates took to the nicer side of the bowl for some striking. Ashley Dunn put up back-to-back 700 sets to lead all bowlers at +226 for her six game set. Anthony Schanen looked comfortable in the Open qualifying 2nd at +201 followed by Jerome Jordan Jr. +146 and Brandon Wanders +138. Low to qualify was Ralph Ramirez III at even. In the bracket, top-4 took a bye while the bottom 8 bowled for spots in the quarterfinals. (5) Oscar Chan swept past (12) Ralph Ramirez, (6) Tyler Salverda swept (11) Terrence Rob-inson 2-0, (7) Joe Grondin needed three to take out (10) Wesley Low Jr. and (9) Patrick Rodriguez was the lone lower seed to ad-vance 2-1 over (8) Brandon Pekins. In the quarterfinals, the top-4 seeds joined the fun and all four took their matches. (1) Ashley Dunn swept through Rodriguez, (2) Anthony Schanen swept past Grondin, (3) Jerome Jordan Jr. took two straight from Salverda and (4) Brandon Wanders needed three to eliminate Chan. In the semifinals, Dunn continued her great bowling taking out Wan-ders 206-192 and 213-200 while on the other side Jerome Jordan Jr. needed three to eliminate Schanen 205-195, 222-228 and 192-190. In the championship match, Jordan Jr. came out striking to a 201-195 win but Dunn came back to take game two 228-208 and force a game three. In the final match, Jerome Jordan Jr. took ad-vantage of a couple missed spares mid-game and struck his way to a 216-180 win and the title. Congratulations Jerome!

For new bowlers, our two clubs bowl two distinct formats. Farm Club bowlers bowl five games of qualifying before the field is cut. The top bowlers continue to bowl 5 games of match-play to qualify for the championship rolloffs. In the Open Division, bowlers bowl six games of qualifying before the field is cut. Bowlers then bowl single-elimination best-of-three matches to the finals. Farm Club get the experience of bowling bonus-pin match play while Open Division bowlers get to feel the pres-sure of best-of-three elimination matches. Each format prepares bowlers for their adult tournament careers.

Farm Club tournament entry fee is $40 and Open Division entry fee is $45. Bowlers earn SMART scholarship funds as well as season-long points for end of the year awards. Membership fee for the entire season is $30 and JAT Gold Membership is available for $100 and includes a new Brunswick or DV8 ball of choice- a great opportunity thanks to our friends at Brunswick/DV8 Bowling. Membership fees go towards year-end awards for our outstanding bowlers.

Next week the top match will again feature Professional Approach for the Round lead, and hopefully for the rest of us, Team 12 can gar-ner more than 1 win vs them, a feat yet achieved this season. We do have position round EVERY week here, makes for some of the best bowling around. With so many talented bowlers here, I can’t believe nobody has managed to shoot 300, so if you have never witnessed one, come down, the bar help is hot, and the beer is cold!! And I will be surprised if we don’t get that first perfect game. Have a blessed week everyone; see you next Monday at Del Rio Lanes in Downey!
