Andy Scrivner, director of golf opera- tions, is maintaining its tradition of evoking a small-town experience and also upping the per- sonal touches a notch. “We want our pros to spend as much time as possible with members on and off the course for even more face-to-face exposure,” said the Maryland native and 10-year PGA profession- al, who assumed his post last August after being head pro at Pelican Marsh Golf Club in Na- ples. “Providing a tip before, during or after someone plays is better than the player calling for a lesson.” Serving individual needs extends to Shadow Wood’s multiple club- fitting systems in a stu- dio within its academy. “We’ve recognized that many ladies use hand- me-down or their hus- band’s clubs, especially wedges. Most of them need a club that’s lighter and more specific for their play. It’s great to provide special help.” The academy boasts state-of-the-art video swing analysis systems, a full-swing tee and a bun- kered practice green area for both practice and instruction that’s “crucial to our golf expe- rience. The academy is one of the few in the area that offers such a wide range and variety in teaching and fitting.” Scrivner is also con- tinuing the practice of bringing in outside ex- perts such as mental performance coach and sports psychologist Dr. Shannon Reese of Na- ples. She’ll lead an out- door clinic Feb. 12. Such special events inform on “fitness, nutrition, tech- nique and even just keep- ing the game fun.” After a major invest- ment in its indoor and outdoor dining rooms, locker rooms and other areas, Shadow Wood earned Best Renovated Clubhouse distinction last June by Golf Inc. magazine. “It’s important to be as new and modern as possible to meet the needs of current mem- bers and attract new ones,” Scrivner said. He is preparing for the 11th annual fundrais- er, themed “A Communi- ty That Cares,” for the Shadow Wood Charitable Foundation on Feb. 20, including a golf tourna- ment with approximately 150 members, and a gala dinner with auctions and raffles expected to gath- er 200-plus members. Habitat for Humanity was the sole recipient for the first nine years, re- ceiving more than $1 million. The Foundation was created in 2012 so the club could expand to also support other causes. Last year’s pro- gram raised $160,000, elevating the 10-year total to $1.26 million. Benificiaries this year will be Habitat for Hu- manity, Cafe of Life, New Horizons of Southwest Florida, Feeding the 5000, ICSL Food Pantry and Community Out- reach, Friends of the Salvation Army and Bon- ita Springs Assistance Center. “I’m proud we’re a good neighbor to the entire area,” said Scrivn- er, whose dad introduced him to golf at the Dia- mond Ridge Golf Course- Woodlands, in Woodlawn, Md. “I was impressed from the beginning with the professionalism of pros and other staff,” which led him to pursue and earn a degree in professional golf man- agement at Penn State. Beyond the Gates: Registration is underway for the 15th annual Sneaky Pete’s Tennis Championships, in 3.0 to 4.5 men’s and women’s singles and 6.0 to 9.0 doubles and mixed dou- bles divisions plus an open division for pros, high school and college players, at The Club at Sterling Oaks in North Naples on March 1-9. More than $2,500 in prize money will be offered. Visit sterlingoaksten- nis.com for more info and to register … The ACE Group Classic, in- cluding Tom Watson, Bernhard Langer, Hale Irwin, Tom Kite, Colin Montgomerie, Nick Price and Curtis Strange, will be held at the TwinEagles Club in Naples on Feb. 11-16 … The Audubon Country Club in Naples will hold its largest men’s golf tournament of the year, the annual Alligator Invitational for member- guest teams from Feb. 20- 22, including a dinner, dancing and awards event … BoardRoom magazine, published by the Association of Pri- vate Club Directors, recently awarded Bonita Bay Club with a Dis- tinguished Emerald Club of the World designation after an extensive evalu- ation and measurement of member-experience ratings. Bonita Bay Club has a tennis center with 18 Har-Tru courts, a swimming pool and three Arthur Hills-designed golf courses plus two courses by Tom Fazio at nearby Bonita Bay Club Naples.
