i Reviewed by Senator Tillman in a Letter to Judge Bryant In a letter to Judge W F Bry ¬ ant of Lincoln Senator Benjamin R Tillman of South Carolina makes several rather sensational statements respecting mob viol- ence ¬ and the race question in theI South declaring among other things that mobs are evidences of a spirit of Liberty that race an ¬ tagonism and race hatred arc growing apace that the whites used force and fraud to overcome negro majorities that unless the Northern people can be made to understand that no power upon earth can force negro equality up ¬ on the white people of the South the black race there will be exter ¬ urinatedand that President Roosevelt has given the negroes to hope and believe that they may yet become the dominant race There are 785000 negroes in South Carolina and only 500000 white people For eight long years these ignorant and debased ne ¬ gross governed if the word can be applied to such rule as we had and then the white minority threw off the yoke We did it because life had ceased to be worth living on the terms and conditions which existed from 68 to 76 From necessity we used force and fraud to overcome the negro majority The negroes were backed by the United States Gov ¬ ernment and the great Republican party The whites had nothing but the memory of a civilization coming down to them from a thousand years of Anglo Saxon manhood We used our brains and managed to liberate ourselves I from a condition that was hope ¬ less arid unendurable We have reestablished law and order as far as practicable and are endeavoring to preserve our civili ¬ zation The negroes have the memory of eight years of license and inspired by the actions and utterances of President Roosevelt they have given evidence only too plentiful of a hope that their time will come again Race antago- nism ¬ and hatred grows apart The whites are resolved to govern at whatever cost because experience has shown that any other course is ruin The criminal classes among the negroes increase at a fearfulrate and unless the Northern people can be made to understand that negro equality is something that will not be tolerated and that no power in the world can force it Upon us a race war is inevitable with the re- sult ¬ that negroes will be extermi natedHistory is full of instances where white men have governed whtth men ruthlissly There are object lessons republic is in danger thereby The Northern people can help us if they will by support and co ¬ operating but they have got to unlearn many of the ideas whichk have come to them in the last four years and most of all they must realize that the negroes will be put down and held down with a bloody hand regardless of the con ¬ sequences If the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments were repeatedand the idea that an educated negro is fit to govern white men aband ¬ oned the negroes would soon cease to provoke the superior race and suchacts of blood and violence would be things of the past With the Republican party standing for equality and demanding the pun ¬ ishment of Southern whites be ¬ cause they do not submit to negro dominiation the antagonism of the races will grow and such deeds as that ut Statesboro will be more frequent than ever We arc between the devil and the deep sea but we will protect our women and we will stand for the principles and form of Gov ¬ ernment of our
