A Message from School Council

Hard to believe the students have been back in school for 2 months already! We been very busy as a School Council. We have lunch from Mr. Sub scheduled for Tuesday November 10. Our newest lunch from Extreme Pita is scheduled for Tuesday November 17

th and we have pasta lunch from Mother’s Deli on Tuesday No-

vember 24th. All 3 lunches have been very popular with the students, approximately half of the student body

taking part. Our popcorn & cookie sales are continuing during lunch on Thursday November 12th and 26

th for

$1 each. They will be for sale up and down stairs. Many of our grade 8 students have volunteered to help sell them. If anyone plans on doing some holiday shopping, Miko’s Annual Warehouse Sale (located at 60 East Beaver Creek in Richmond Hill) is currently going on. If you buy anything from them between the dates of November 23 and December 5, please ask to have your bill stamped by the cashier. Please bring your stamped receipt back into the school, as Miko will donate a portion of these sales back to Buttonville Public School. Another important date mark on your calendar is Thursday December 3rd. On Dec. 3rd, Buttonville Public School in conjunction with Panera Bread on 3987 Highway 7 (at Birchmount Road, by the Whole Foods Plaza) will be hosting a Community Get Together. We would like to invite your family & friends to visit this restaurant between the hours of 4 pm – 8 pm in order to bring our community together. Panera Bread will donate a portion of their sales back to us!! (Take out is available!!) This is a great opportunity not only to help raise funds for the school but to also meet other Buttonville families!! More details will be sent home with your child. We are really looking forward to seeing you there!!

Next council meeting scheduled for Tuesday December 1st at 6:30 pm in the staff room. All are wel-

come.

Curriculum Corner

As the year continues, you may hear your children speaking about Learning Goals and Success Criteria. Learning Goals are brief statements based on the Ontario Curriculum that clearly identify what students are expected to know and do. Success Criteria allow students to understand what success ‘looks like’ and how to achieve it. Success Criteria allow students to monitor progress and assess their own work. Success criteria are used by teachers to provide students with descriptive feedback. It is important that our children are ac-tively engaged in the learning process. You can support your child at home by talking about his/her learning. Some questions that you can ask your child are:

What did you learn more about today?

How did your new learning connect with what you already knew?

What do you think you need to learn more about? Why?

What did you do well?

What success criteria did you use to improve your work?

What are some next steps or goals that you need to set?

What is GOOS paper? GOOS paper stands for Good On One Side paper. Instead of putting all of your paper in the recycling bin start a container for your GOOS paper. It is great for drawing on or writing quick notes. Doing this one small

thing you will be saving hundreds of trees.

This year, our school has been working hard towards bringing the Me to We initiative to Buttonville PS. Several of the Buttonville students from K - 8 participated in the We Scare Hunger project. This is a short video giving some information about the campaign - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TySrpYqNzFE.

This project involved having our Trick-or-Treaters’ collect non-perishable food items, as well as candy on Hal-loween! We were also learning a lot about hunger at school to support our understanding of this project.

We have been seeing a lot of food arriving in our front lobby that our students have collected over the week-end. This begins our kick off to our Holiday food drive. Thank you so much for your help and participation in

this initiative!

Bully Preventation Week

The third week of November is designated as National Bullying Awareness and Prevention Week in order to promote safe and positive learning environments for our students. At Buttonville, we are committed to the well being and safety of all our students and this permeates our work throughout the year. We believe in using Restorative Discipline approaches in order to help encourage our students to become kind, respectful citi-zens who ‘stand up’ against Bullying. Bullying is defined as a form of repeated, persistent and aggressive behaviour directed at an individual or in-dividuals that is intended to cause (or should be known to cause) fear and distress and/or harm to another person's body, feelings, self-esteem or reputation. Bullying occurs in a context where there is a real or per-ceived power imbalance. Bullying can take various forms. These include:

– hitting, shoving, stealing or damaging property – name calling, mocking, or making sexist, racist or homophobic comments – excluding others from a group or spreading gossip or rumours about them

– spreading rumours and hurtful comments through the use of cellphones, e-mail, text messaging and social networking sites

We believe that we can all work together to raise awareness about bullying, its impact and the actions to take in order to stop or prevent bullying. For more information please visit: www.bullyingawarenessweek.org

Cold Weather is on its Way!

Please make sure your children dress appropriately for the upcoming cold weather. Warm boots, socks, pants, sweaters, coats, hats, mittens and scarves tucked inside the coat are very important for children of all ages to wear. Children will be expected to be outside during recess and lunch so please make sure they are dressed for the weather. As well, since we have almost 500 students here at Buttonville, and many children wear the same brands, colours and sizes of clothing, it would be very helpful if your child’s name could be printed in ink in boots and on labels of clothing. If your child has lost any items, please check our Lost and Found box located near the front foyer of the school. It is a good idea to send extra clothing with younger stu-dents as accidents do happen or they get wet on the way to school with rain and snow.

School Bus Cancellation

To ensure the safety of students, school bus service may be cancelled from time to

time due to inclement weather, extreme temperatures and/or poor road conditions. In

these cases, parents and students should develop alternate care/transportation ar-

rangements.

Since some busing schedules begin by 7:00 a.m., cancellation decisions must be

made by 6:00 a.m. to allow time to communicate.

Cancellation decisions will only be made after thorough consultation with the Safety

Officers of school bus companies servicing York Region and are based on several factors including precipita-

tion, air temperature, road conditions and weather forecast.

Please note the following;

A decision to cancel school bus service will be region-wide meaning all school buses, vans and taxis will

not operate.

School bus routes may be cancelled when severe weather is not affecting all municipalities in

York Region. Both the YRDSB and YCDSB operate many regional educational programs. Students at-

tending these programs are transported over large attendance areas encompassing several municipal

boundaries. This limits the ability to cancel bus service using a municipality or zone methodology.

Unless otherwise stated, schools will remain open and parents can make arrangements to transport their chil-

dren to and from school even if school bus service is cancelled. If buses are cancelled in the morning,

they will not operate in the afternoon. Therefore students transported to school by parents will require

the same transportation home, picked up by parents/guardians at 3:05 pm..

Parents, students and school staff are asked to access the following radio and television stations after 6:00

a.m. to receive bus cancellation information:
