1. Foreword  1.1 President’s Message

Greetings, my fellow students from the School of Business & Accountancy (BA)! Thank you for showing interest in BA Society by viewing our BA Society Annual Report 14/15. This report was crafted with a sole objective of educating BA students more about BA Society. Hence, I hope that you will be able to get a clearer picture of what BA Society is all about after reading it.

Through embracing creative and unique ideas, BA Society aims to provide new and exciting experiences for the BA student body all year round. In BA Society, we strive for perfection in every of our events to ensure an enriching and unforgettable polytechnic life for our fellow BA students.

Our dedication to serve the BA student body was visibly recognized and appreciated by the students as we have been able to garner tremendous support from you all for our events. In fact, BA Society events have become the most anticipated among BA students in the school of BA. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank every BA student for your loyal support in BA society. Living up to our tagline - ‘Your Enthusiasm; Our Motivation!’

In the past few years, BA Society has managed to hold numerous interesting and special events in which an overwhelming amount of positive responses have been received. I was privileged to be able to be part of every event in my three years of service in BA Society.

Never for a moment have I regretted to be part of this big family of high calibre and dedicated students, working towards one single objective of serving the interest of the BA student body. This humbling experience has taught me the importance of teamwork and most importantly, I have understood how the dedication and commitment from a small group of people can be of a greater influence to the larger population.

If you do share the same passion and dedication as us and hope to make an impact on people’s life, we as BA Society will welcome you with open arms.

Regards,

See Seng Yang Committee Advisors, President

1. Foreword  1.2 Vice President’s Message

Greeting to all members of BA Society, As Henry Ford once said, “Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is progress. Working together is success.” AY 2014/15 has truly been a memorable year for each and every one of us. We have been tested on the anvil and I am glad to say that we have all emerged, even stronger than we were before this journey began. Through the trials and events that we have all gone through, I am privileged to be able to witness the coming together of like-minded individuals, who have time and again placed the interests of the student body of BA above our own. Planning and execution of all our events would not have been made possible without the grit and determination of every Main Committee member and Student Coordinator Officer. Along every step of the way, they have all given each other mutual support, raised above their indifferences and developed into a well-oiled machine, with every member playing a crucial role unlike to the cogs on a wheel. Through the arduous journey of planning events as well as concentrating on your studies, you all have maintained an exemplary level of cohesiveness amongst yourselves. Meeting up not just for work but also for play, demonstrates how much you all have grown together, sharing not just your good times but also the bad. With AY 2014/15 drawing to a close, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your dedication and enthusiasm. Coming together as one, striving hard as one and working together as one, you have outdone yourselves in your performance. It has been a pleasure working alongside all of you and I know that when you look back on your time spent in poly, BA Society will definitely be vividly remembered as good times spent with great company.

Regards,

Marcus Goh Committee Advisors, Vice President

The Committee Advisors (CAs) are the Executive Management Committee of BA Society. The CAs oversees and manages the activities of the entire society. Each advisor was either in the Main Committee or a Student Coordinator Officer in their second year of study before being reappointed to head BA Society as a Committee Advisor. The job of a CA is to provide advice and mentorship to the Main Committee and Student Coordinator Officers with the management and coordination of their events. The advisors serve as liaisons to lecturers, other academic organizations and sometimes, external parties that may wish to collaborate with BA Society. The CAs make major decisions that affect BA Society as a whole and set the direction for the year. Every CA is allocated to a committee to guide each respective event committee. The CAs are also in charge of selecting the next batch of Main Committee members and Student Coordinator Officers for the next academic year. Each CA has their own post in the committee that serves the needs of different functions of the society.

2.  BA  Society  Organisation  Chart  2.2 Main Committee

The Main Committee is the events planning and management sector of BA Society. They are basically the brains behind the activities held by BA Society. At the end of each academic year, a new batch of Main Committee would be selected from a series of interviews to get the best candidates for the job. From there, the selected few would form the Main Committee of BA Society for the academic year. Main Committee recruitment starts shortly after the conclusion of BAOC. BA Society welcomes all aspiring Main Committee members to sign up and serve the School of BA!

2.2.1 Being a Main Committee member:

The Main Committee will decide what events and projects BA Society are going to take on for academic year. This academic year, the Main Committee had decided to take on the Student Coordinators Outing, BAmazing X(10), Fund My Life 4 and BAMP. Each Committee member would then be allocated into his or her respective committees. From there, they would embark on the planning and management of their events. The pressure is on every Main Committee member to deliver the best out of every event. All events by BA Society that students of BA have participated in are the hard work of the Main Committee. They go through hours of meetings several times a week to plan trials, games and event operations. All these for one simple purpose: To forge tighter bonds and start new friendships within BA through such bonding activities that they plan. Aside from the 4 events, the Business and Accountancy Orientation Convention (BAOC) would be the most significant project that every batch of Main Committee will take on. This event would welcome more than 1300 freshmen annually to the School of BA. Also, this would be the last event that they will execute before stepping down from their post.

2.  BA  Society  Organisation  Chart  2.3 Student Coordinator Officers

The Student Coordinator Officers (SCOs) are the arms of BA Society. Similarly, as each academic year comes to an end, a new batch of SCOs would be selected to serve BA Society. The selection of SCOs are in a group of 3 rather than individually. Hence, aspiring SCOs would have to form their own groups consisting of one male Year 2 BA student, one female Year 2 BA student and one Year 1 BA student of any gender. They would be required to go through a series of interviews as a group before being selected as SCOs. A total of 8 groups i.e. 24 SCOs would be selected to serve BA Society in the School of BA. If you have a passion to lead a group of people, form your group and join us! BA Society welcomes you!

2.3.1 Being a Student Coordinator Officer:

They help the Main Committee by being coordinators during events. While the Main Committee is at the back end managing event operations, SCOs are at the front line ensuring the flow of the event and that instructions by the Event ICs are carried out. SCOs are required to attend every event trials that are held by the Main Committee. From there, they provide feedback and opinions for the Main Committee members to enhance their ideas and help identify areas that may be lacking. Other than being a coordinator, SCOs have to manage their own group of Student Coordinators that would be their student leaders during BAOC. Aside from BA Society activities, SCOs will hold their own activities throughout the academic year for BA students to participate in. Such activities would usually include bonding dinners, themed events and a group chalet. BAOC would see the SCOs to be placed under tremendous pressure as the have to manage their group of Student Coordinators and freshmen. They have to ensure that BAOC is well coordinated and at the same time managing their group in ensuring everyone have a memorable and enjoyable time.

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15  3.1 SC Outing – Mystery Investigator Alliance (MIA)

SC (Student Coordinators) Outing was held on 26th July 2014 at 10 am in Sentosa. The event was organised to provide a platform for all eight groups of Student Coordinating Officers to bond with their respective twenty Student Coordinators. The SC Outing Committee came together weekly to plan the event by starting off with the theme, followed by group names, committee t-shirt design and games. It was decided that the theme for this year would be Mystery Investigator Alliance (MIA). During the event, Main Committee Members were the game masters (The Associates) while Student Coordinating Officers were the Student Coordinators’ (Mystery Investigators) group leaders. Prior to the actual event, there were a series of trials to improve the event operations.

3.  BA

BA Society Annual Report 2014/15 Page | 18

Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 SC Outing 2015 began with the briefing of the Mystery Investigators by the two In-Charges before they embark on their journey to rescue the kidnapped Committee Advisor. The Mystery Investigators went through cases (‘Ice Breaking Games’) to encourage interaction and collaboration amongst the Mystery Investigators. An exceptional case was “Find Your Secret Agent” where Mystery Investigators had to sing their agent song ‘any of the top hits’ and approach an agent in disguise who will continue their song with the correct lyrics. At around 1.30pm, upon successful completion of the cases, the Mystery Investigators went on to Sentosa Island to take on missions in exchange for clues to decipher the location of the kidnapped committee advisor. The missions on Sentosa include “Watermines” and “Encryption Decryption”. Missions on Sentosa Island were competitive by nature and had Mystery Investigators to pit themselves against each other. Particularly “Watermines”, as the mission required the Mystery Investigators to pass a sponge amongst themselves as they move across the playing field and use the sponge to “detonate” their opponent’s watermines. The Mystery Investigators who successfully detonated all of their opponents watermines would accomplish the mission and win a clue.

BA Society Annual Report 2014/15 Page | 19

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15

There were 8 clues given and these clues were incomplete individually. The 8 Mystery Investigators had to come together to put their clues together to collectively rescue the kidnapped committee advisor. Upon solving the clues, the 8 Mystery Investigators entered into a Mass Game where they are informed that their group leaders have been kidnapped while they were busy trying to be the best Mystery Investigator. The 8 Mystery Investigators are then given a set of pictures which they have to guess a number to unlock the padlocks to free their group leaders. However, the number that is given to each group will only unlocks a group leader of another group.

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 At the end of SC Outing, the message sent across to all participants was to always help the ones around you as sometimes we may tend to forget about them when we strive to achieve success for ourselves. Even though the committee members had ups and downs while planning the event, but what matters most was that the objective of bringing the Student Coordinators together for a day of fun and laughter was achieved. Last but not least, we would like to thank all Teacher-In-Charge, Committee Advisors, Main Committee Members, Student Coordinating Officers and Student Coordinators for making this event a fun-filled one.

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 3.2 BAmazing X – The Xtreme Edition; A Race Against Time

BAmazing Race was one of the four main events in BA Society AY 14/15. It is a 2-day amazing race around Singapore organized for students across all the levels from the School of BA. This year marked the 10th anniversary of Bamazing and hence an extreme theme was brought upon – The Xtreme Edition; A Race Against Time. The race aims to instil a spirit of competitiveness and perseverance to build stronger and meaningful bonds between the participants. The amazing race consists of different stations island-wide, of which participants are to complete specific tasks planned by the BA Society members who will also be conducting the various games. This year, BAmazing X had an overwhelming response of students who signed up in groups of 4. However, the committee has decided to take in only 120 students, in the ratio of 2 males to 2 females. This gender ratio helps to ensure consistency and promotes fairness to all the participants.

BA Society Annual Report 2014/15 Page | 22

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 The planning committee held weekly meetings, multiple island-wide recce and conducted trials to guarantee a time worthwhile for all the participants. During the weekly meetings, the planning committee discussed numerous matters. One of the major concerns the planning committee faced was planning the sequence of the stations. The travelling route of the race was done with great thought and planning to ensure the comfort and well-being of the participants. BAmazing X comprises of 7 and 6 stations in Day 1 and Day 2 respectively. Some key highlights of BAmazing X Day 1 was the ‘Wow Factor’ station in Cineleisure Orchard. This station involved some levels of skills and luck. The participants had to compete in a game of darts, which required them to work as a team to achieve a total score of 600. Another highlight was the ‘Fear Factor’ station. This station had a use of different types of creepy crawlies such as meal worms, crickets, and small frogs. Participants who were more fearful had to gather their courage and with encouragement from their fellow teammates, they successfully completed the station.

BA Society Annual Report 2014/15 Page | 23

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 Day 2’s main features were the 2 ‘Wow Factor’ stations, consisting of a station in IKEA Tampines and another in Sembawang Shopping Centre. At IKEA Tampines, the participants had to complete a ice-cream eating challenge within a given time of one minute. For the station at Sembawang Shopping Centre, participants were tasked to come up with a dance and sing their hearts out to specific songs chosen by the game masters. To conclude the 2 days extreme and fulfilling amazing race, the top 3 teams were awarded with CapitaMall Vouchers. This event was made possible with the hard work and efforts of the planning committee together with the members of BA Society AY14/15. Working alongside with vendors from Dartslive, Teo Heng, as well as sponsorships from Red Bull and NEWater, an extreme amazing race BAmazing X : The Xtreme Edition, was truly a race against time.

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 3.3 Fund My Life (FML) Charity Run – Limitless

Fund My Life (FML) is a charity event which the Business and Accountancy (BA) Society organizes and executes. This year was the fourth year this event has been held and the theme of the event was “Limitless”. Hence, the name of the event was Fund My Life 4 - Limitless. The theme “Limitless” aimed to encourage participants to push themselves beyond their limits, letting them realise that their limits were something which they placed upon themselves and they simply needed to put in effort to achieve more. This was achieved through running of numerous rounds along a fixed route within the Ngee Ann Polytechnic campus. The uniqueness of the run is that it allowed the participants decide for themselves how many rounds they wished to run. After the participants have attained their targeted amounts of rounds, there was an after party served with buffet, stage games and performances for the participants to enjoy and relax.

BA Society Annual Report 2014/15 Page | 25

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 This year, FML 4 was held during after school hours on a Friday, 24th October 2014 within the Ngee Ann Polytechnic school compound. There were a total of 236 runners. For event components, Registration, Race Pack Collection and Baggage Deposit was held at Block 73, Warm-Up and Safety Briefing was held at the Admin Field, Flag-Off by Miss Hana Sharpe was held outside the Atrium, Running Route and Water Points is the road around Block 4, the After Party was held at Block 51 The Deck itself.   This event would definitely have not been possible without the collective efforts of the BAS members. Multiple roles have been allocated to each member of BAS and some of the roles included: Registration, Baggage, Ushers, Road Marshalls, Water Point, Emcees and First-Aid.

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 3.4 BAMP 2014 – Stoneage Upheaval

BAMP is a 3D2N camp that serves as a platform for bonding among students from the School of BA. The highlights of the camp are the games, where some games had the campers getting down and dirty, while other games were dry sporting games. Through the three days of camp activities, campers were given the opportunity to forge new bonds with students from other courses in the School of BA. The friendships built remain special in the hearts of the campers as BAMP was unlike the usual social interactions in lecture halls and classrooms. The planning of BAMP stemmed from the theme, as it set the stage for all other activities that follow. After much deliberation, the theme of Primitives was decided upon, and BAMP 2014 - Stoneage Upheaval was underway. The theme took campers back in time to the Stone Age when cavemen ruled the lands, and each tribe of cavemen fighting for their own pride and survival.

BA Society Annual Report 2014/15 Page | 27

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 The committee held weekly meetings starting from the month of May, where ideas were explored and various issues were discussed, such as games that were to be trialled, camp operations, and other miscellaneous activities.   BAMP also provides a platform for the Main Committee members and Student Coordinator Officers to work closely together to ensure the success of the event. The Main Committee members were responsible for planning the activities and carrying out the operations, while the Student Coordinator Officers led their groups of campers with their enthusiasm, enhancing the campers’ BAMP experience. Trial camps were conducted in November in order to get feedback and suggestions to improve the games and operations. The BAMP committee conducted the first trial camp for other MC members and CAs, where the game concepts were tested. All Main Committee members conducted the second trial camp for the SCOs, to stimulate the games and operations for the actual camp.

BA Society Annual Report 2014/15 Page | 28

3.  BA  Society’s  events  for  the  Year  2014/15 BAMP began with a mass game of chasing to get campers warmed up to each other. They went around school in pairs to complete tasks to earn stickers, which were to be pasted on Society members with sticker boards running around campus. Some other notable games in BAMP2014 include Stone Age Survival, where campers built their own shelters to protect themselves against the other cavemen, mimicking times of the past. The camp finale included a performance from each of the tribes that gave an opportunity for campers to showcase their talents in acting and performing. As the Society motto says, “Your Enthusiasm, Our Motivation”, the smiles and laughter of the campers were the source of motivation for all the effort put into planning the camp. The 8 months of planning was not an easy feat, but the committee members remained strong and persevered. The efforts of the committee were finally paid off as they saw the campers thoroughly enjoying themselves.

BAOC is a 3-day freshmen orientation program held annually to welcome the new freshmen to the School of BA. Being the largest orientation program held in NP, BAOC is entirely planned and ran by students, mainly the members of BA Society and aided by Student Coordinators.

BAOC will consist of 8 groups and each are led by 3 SCOs. About 3-4 months prior to the event, the MCs and SCOs would have started their preparing for the biggest event of the year. Planning has to be precise and well-managed, especially for an event of a large scale. The MCs would plan through the event operations, liasing with external vendors and sponsors and even flag making, such as to have a smoother execution of the programs. The SCOs would be training their Student Coordinators and prepping them to be ready to lead their new freshmen through their first experience here in NP School of BA, while the CAs would be around to provide guidiance and assistance through the planning and execution of the events.

For most BA Society members, BAOC 2015 would be a bittersweet experience as the end of BAOC would mean concluding their journey here in BA Society. Through their one year Society journey of AY 2014/2015, each member would have seen through their highest and lowest, as the journey was never an easy one to embark on. I am sure that through this ups and downs, a leader is then further moulded into a greater one.

Through the years of your support and appreciation, BA Society would like to further extend its grattitude. For without it, we would not have lived up to our motto, “Your Enthusiasm, Our Motivation”.
