Bachelor of Arts - Textile Design 2011/12 The textile design student show, ‘twentyseven’, showcases a range of industry and individual projects created by final year textile design degree students. Global in outlook, the RMIT BA Textile Design program holds a unique position within the Australian University sector. With emphasis placed on translating textile concepts into marketable solutions, students are encouraged to explore purpose, materials, patterning, colour, and to conceptualise possible futures. The program engages students in design learning via a range of real world projects. These projects create the foundation for graduate textile designers to pursue further academic research, a consolidated industry career pathway or to develop a small manufacturing enterprise after graduating from the program. As emerging designers and creative individuals, this year’s graduates exemplify high level skills and capabilities; from hand generated artwork to computer-aided design. Students are working with printed, woven and knitted textile techniques and materials incorporating the latest digital technologies. The program would not be where it is today without the continued support of our industry partners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many individuals and organisations that have contributed to guest lectures, discussions, workshops, and industry placements. In particular I would like to thank our Industry Partnership Award (IPA) sponsors for their generous support of the program. A unique textile design program within a major Australian University can only function with the collegiate support of dedicated teaching and support staff. I wish to express my thanks on behalf of our students for the professionalism and commitment of our teaching team. Finally, congratulations to our final year students. Your creativity, skills, hard work and professionalism can only enhance the future of the TCF design industry and the textile design program at RMIT University. The textile design team acknowledges our 2011 graduates and we wish the ‘twentyseven’ every success for a creative, working life. Thank you. Bachelor of Arts - Textile Design 2011/12

The textile design student show, ‘twentyseven’, showcases a range of industry

and individual projects created by final year textile design degree students.

Global in outlook, the RMIT BA Textile Design program holds a unique position

within the Australian University sector. With emphasis placed on translating textile

concepts into marketable solutions, students are encouraged to explore purpose,

materials, patterning, colour, and to conceptualise possible futures. The program

engages students in design learning via a range of real world projects. These

projects create the foundation for graduate textile designers to pursue further

academic research, a consolidated industry career pathway or to develop a

small manufacturing enterprise after graduating from the program.

As emerging designers and creative individuals, this year’s graduates exemplify

high level skills and capabilities; from hand generated artwork to computer-aided

design. Students are working with printed, woven and knitted textile techniques

and materials incorporating the latest digital technologies.

The program would not be where it is today without the continued support of our

industry partners. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many individuals

and organisations that have contributed to guest lectures, discussions, workshops,

and industry placements. In particular I would like to thank our Industry Partnership

Award (IPA) sponsors for their generous support of the program.

A unique textile design program within a major Australian University can only

function with the collegiate support of dedicated teaching and support staff.

I wish to express my thanks on behalf of our students for the professionalism and

commitment of our teaching team.

Finally, congratulations to our final year students. Your creativity, skills, hard work

and professionalism can only enhance the future of the TCF design industry

and the textile design program at RMIT University. The textile design team

acknowledges our 2011 graduates and we wish the ‘twentyseven’ every success

for a creative, working life.

Thank you.

Work Integrated Learning and IPA projects

Staff and students would like to thank and acknowledge the following project

partners. Their enthusiasm, time and industry knowledge has enriched the

program across all three-year levels.

Linen House Industry Partnership Award 2011 – second year textile studio

This project gave students the opportunity to; research, explore, create and refine

concepts for the Linen House range of bed linen and associated accessories.

Under the guidance of designers Emily Treganowan and Liz McCracken, students

developed hand painted artwork inspired by this years Vienna: Art and Design

exhibition held at the NGV. Congratulations to Kate Tuckett, Laura Dougherty,

Elise Cakebread, Esther Sandler and Megan McNeill for their first, second and

highly commended awards.

Ethical Textiles – Moral Fairground – second year textile design print

Moral Fairground is facilitating a project between our program and Lao

Sericulture to design and print onto hand woven fair trade silk scarves. The aim

of the project is to be able to raise money via the sales of the printed scarves for

Lao Sericulture, a not for profit organisation in Laos. This will assist them in supplying

water filters and building toilets for schools and hospital’s in the remote villages

that undertake traditional silk production and weaving using natural methods.

Kommaly Chanthavong from Mulberries, a small-scale Fair Trade co-operative in

Laos met with the students to discuss her work and what Fair-Trade means to the

small communities and remote villages in Laos.

On completion of the project the scarves, hand printed by the students, will be

auctioned off at Fair@Square, a fair trade and ethical festival organised by Moral

Fairground and held in Federation Square 2 - 4 December 2011.

Dryen Australia Industry Partnership Award 2011

– third year computer aided textile design

Final year students participated in a bed linen design project where they used their

CAD skills, to create a range of textile designs for doona covers, sheets, pillowcases

and accessories. Students had the opportunity to design for either adults with the

themes, ‘Sugar and Spice’ and ‘Into the Wild’ or children’s themes, ‘Artbrat’ and

‘Tropicana’ utilising current trend forecasting directions developed by Dryen

Australia. This is a valuable industry WIL project that reinforces how creativity utilising

Computer Aided Textile Design can achieve commercial outcomes with student

design work taken into production. Award winners to be announced at the end of

year degree shows.

The Johnston Collection museum – third year textile studio

Textile design students have worked this year with The Johnston Collection to develop

a range of products for their site-specific museum shop. The project focused on

documenting the decorative collection housed within the museum with students

designing and making a range of textile products for museum visitors. The outcomes

were displayed in July at the Design Made Trade show, which is part of the Victorian

government funded State of Design Festival. Collaboration with niche community

partners helps source new projects and opportunities for our students and develops

the professional skills and capabilities of graduate textile designers.

Ladelle Homewares Industry Partnership Award 2011 – third year textile studio

Ladelle have joined us as a new WIL industry partner this year and they specialise

in developing homewares for major Australian high street companies. The design

team at Ladelle briefed the student group to focus on four key directional

themes; students then researched and designed an innovative and commercial

coordinated kitchen accessories and table linen range using CATD. Ladelle had

a very successful debut at the European textile trade show Heimtextil earlier this

year. For the past few years the BA textile design program has had graduates

working within the Ladelle design studio and this new partnership with the program

creates an opportunity for students to work on a professional design brief with

award outcomes and winning designs taken through to production.

Hoad Fabrics – second year industry award

For approximately the last fifteen years the best folio of work by a second year

student within the BA Textile Design program has been awarded the Hoad Prize.

Hoad Fabrics are a Melbourne based wholesaler of furnishing fabrics dealing with

interior designers and soft furnishing retailers across Australia and New Zealand.

The Hoad judges base their award decision on: innovative design, technical

competence and commercial viability.

Augmented Spatiality – RMIT Learning and Teaching Investment Fund (LTIF) 2011

– third year textile design

Project Title “Development and the delivery of a cross-disciplinary course,

integrating applied architecture, textile design and mechatronics; the design

and digital fabrication of working prototypes.”

Students worked on a studio project in small multi-disciplinary groups drawn

from RMIT’s Textile Design, Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design,

Industrial Design and Public Art Courses. This was a conceptual project where

students were asked consider urban public spaces of the future.

Specifically Textile Design students used their textile expertise to explore and

create innovative solutions applicable for fabrics, surfaces or skins. Students

considered how recent technological advances in computing, communication,

sensing and actuation can be retrofitted to the visionary city of the immediate

past to foster concurrent interaction in physical and virtual public space.

Design is a way of simplifying and organising my ideas. Through the undifferentiated observation

of day to day life I draw inspiration from my immediate surroundings. Nature, urban architecture

and abstract pattern provide the starting point for me to create minimalist, stylised designs that

reflect this environment.

but closer inspection reveals them to be full of complexities. My work retains evidence of the

hand, while embracing new technologies to expand the potentials for production and end use.

My interest in playing with three dimensional elements creates movement and depth, pushing

the boundaries of textile design and weave, while still maintaining a commercial appeal.
