TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Today was once called in Latin “Dominica in albis,” or “Sunday in White,” because the church was full of newly baptized Christians wearing their white baptismal garments. Another old title, best forgotten, is “Low Sunday.” There’s nothing low about this festive Sunday in Easter, the eighth day since the first “Alleluia” rang out. In Christian tradition, the number eight is a symbol of fulfillment, transition, breaking through the seven-day rhythm of life to a new way of being. That is why many baptismal fonts have eight sides. The greatest feasts of our calendar are always extended for eight days, called an “octave.” In a way, this means that this first week of Easter is really considered to be one great day. This octave day of Easter sees the best features of Easter still vibrant: joyful alleluias, lush spring flowers everywhere, sprinkling with water, and a lavish table where the Lord gives us himself as bread and wine. Brother, Can You Spare a Truck? St. Mary’s pick-up truck is more than 20 years old and is no longer operational. Numerous repairs have been made over the years to prolong its life, but we must sadly admit that our truck has finally reached The End. We are in desperate need of a

replacement, especially before Spring maintenance chores begin. If any member of the parish would like to donate a full-sized, heavy duty (we need to be able to attach a snow plow) pick-up truck in good working order, please contact Howard Fischer or Rich Plage in the parish office. Your donation would be tax deductible as determined by IRS regulations. Your generosity is much appreciated!

by society. But the core of Jesus’ ministry, the very purpose of his suffering death and Resurrection, was to bring forgiveness. Indeed, forgiveness is the first assignment Jesus gives the disciples in today’s Gospel. If we are to make the presence of Christ known in the world and draw people to belief, we must start with forgiveness. The wounded hands of Christ drew the Apostles from doubt to faith. May our hands be callused and scarred for doing the Lord’s work. May our hands hold one another in love and forgiveness. And may our hands show the presence of God in our midst, helping people to over-come doubt and leading them to faith in the Risen Jesus. If you wish to contact me, please leave a note in the Parish Office or send an email to [email protected].

F isch–ing Lines by Deacon Howard

Fischer

I have always felt bad for poor ol’ Thomas the Apostle. As a result of today’s Gospel passage, he is forever known as “doubting Thomas.” But this is really a most unfair label. In truth, all of the Apostles doubted the reality of the Resurrection. All of the Eleven thought that Mary Magdalene’s reports were utter

nonsense. Thomas was no more of a doubter than the rest of them. But it is from the lips of Thomas that we get the first and most pro-found statement of faith in the Gospels: “My Lord and my God!” And why did Thomas miss Jesus’ first appearance? Because while the other apostles were hiding, Thomas was not a prisoner of his fear and had ventured forth from the upper room. I think “Believing Thomas” would be a far more accurate name for this man. Have you ever noticed that the Gospels take great care to point out that the name “Thomas” means “twin”? Did you ever wonder who Tho-mas’ twin was? The Gospels never say. I think the answer is us – we are the twin of Thomas! Like Thomas, we are called to overcome our doubts by experiencing the Risen Lord in our lives. We may not want to admit that we can have doubts, but the Scriptures are filled with heroes who had their moments of doubt, not just Thomas – people like Peter and Job and most of the prophets. We should not expect our-selves to be any different. Doubt isn’t the opposite of faith; it can be a recurring stage in the growth of faith. Jesus didn’t scold Thomas for doubting, he just didn’t want him to stay stuck in those doubts. Perhaps, like the Apostles, we experience doubt and despair when we are faced with one of life’s many trials, such as the illness or death of a loved one. Maybe we doubt when we see the violence, suffering and deprivation that seem so common in our world. Perhaps we fear the uncertainty of our jobs or the estrangement in our relationships and this causes us to doubt the message of God. So we look for proof that Jesus is risen and that He conquers sin and death and fear and suffering. But if you are looking for something sci-entific in this age of technology, you will not find it. If we are to be the twin of Thomas, then like him we must come to faith by experiencing and touching the Risen Jesus in our midst and by believing in the testi-mony of eyewitnesses. We must encounter Christ in the community of other believers as we gather in the “upper room” around the table on the first day of each week. We may not experience the physical pres-ence of the Risen Jesus in the same way as did Thomas and the Apostles, but we can certainly find him in one another and at the altar in the Eucharist. Jesus did not simply appear to the Apostles to show them that He was alive. He also gave them a mission. Like the Eleven, we are called to carry on Jesus’ ministry of love, service and forgiveness. We must be the presence of Jesus in this world so that other people can touch and believe. It is by the wounds of our sacrifices that others can see the presence of Christ and overcome their doubts. We must care for the sick and the lonely, feed and clothe the poor, liberate those oppressed

If we all give an hour, we would only need to volunteer once every 6-8 weeks. That’s only 6 times per year! Please contact Candice Rastrelli at 847/270-7603 or [email protected]. If we work together, we can keep offering a loving and safe place for our little ones during Mass.

Join Us as We Pray

the Divine Mercy Chaplet On February 22, 1931, Jesus appeared to a simple nun from Cracow, Poland, named Sister Faustina, bringing with Him a wonderful message of Mercy for

mankind. He asked her to have the image made as you see here. The pale ray from His heart stands for the water which makes souls right-eous; the red ray stands for the Blood which is the life of souls. Jesus said to her, “These two rays issued forth from the depths of My most tender Mercy at that time when My agonizing Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross...Fortunate is the one who will dwell in their shelter, for the just hand of God shall not lay hold on him. I want this image to be solemnly blessed on the first Sunday after Easter; that Sunday is to be the Feast of Mercy. On that day, the depths of My Mercy will be open to all. Whoever will go to confession and Holy Communion on that day will receive complete forgiveness of sin and punishment. Mankind will not enjoy peace until it turns with confidence to My Mercy.” St. Mary of the Annunciation is praying the Divine Mercy Chaplet on the third Friday of every month after the daily 8:00 AM. Mass in the Eucharistic Chapel. Please join fellow parishioners April 20th. As we pray our Lords Divine Mercy. For more information, please call Laura Ippolito at 847-223-8511 or [email protected]

Spartan Basketball Team Season Highlights The St. Mary Boys Basketball team ended its winning season finishing third in the conference and second place in the Charger Classic Tour-nament held at Transfiguration. The team was 15 members deep, consisting of both fourth and fifth grade boys eager to take to the court, many of whom were on a basketball team for the first time. The boys learned five offensive play sets, three different defenses and the importance of team play. Thank you to head coach Stacey Roos and assistant coach Pete Roberts. Also helping the team were parents Steve Anichini and Brendan Devlin. Congratulations to team members Stevie Anichini, Joseph Baude, Ryan Bobber, Bradley Burns, Brendan Collins, Aiden Devlin, Kyle Falkstrom, Harrison Fisher, Danny Fiske, Will McGrath, Evan Murphy, Nathan O'Connell, Michael Pelfresne, Ben Roberts and Colin Roos.

The 5th Grade Girls Basketball team at St. Mary School recently com-pleted its season with a second place finish in the Transfiguration Charger Classic Tournament. The team finished the season with 6 wins and 4 losses and outscored their opponents by a huge 205-113 margin. The team had six returning players from last year’s team as well as two new players. Their experience as well as their hard work and knack for having fun led to a very enjoyable season for their coaches Greg Coutre and Kevin Teehan. The girls displayed a well-balanced offense by completing two wins with every girl on the roster scoring at least one point during those games. Caitlin Teehan led the scoring for the season with 66 points followed by Annie Burkhalter with 48, Olivia Coutre with 24 and Morgan Smola with 21. Eileen Arata, Megan Sinnott, Jane O’Connor and Sydney Szalinski provided strong defensive performances for the season. Congratulations on a great year!

“Three Days that Changed the World” by Fr. Hector R.G. Perez

Fr. Perez brings us alongside Jesus in the final

hours of His public ministry as He brings to fulfillment the very purpose His Incarnation, the salvation of all mankind. Fr. Perez's detailed in-sights of those last three days offer a moving look into the loving heart of the Messiah and detailed descriptions of his intense emotional and physical sufferings as they really were. With this knowledge, our hearts can only love him more.

Please remember a $3 donation per CD is suggested to allow the parish to continue the program and offer new material.

We thank you for your generous financial support of our parish family! As you can see from the results on this page, our Triduum and Easter collections reflect the sacrificial giving of many parish-ioners which has produced a bit of an increase in donations over last year. (Easter gifts will continue for the next few weeks, by which time we anticipate that our Easter total will improve from being below last year’s total to show an improvement.) We will report on the early results of the Annual Catholic Appeal in the next week or two. In our first reading today, Luke tells us that “The community of believers was of one heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions were his own. They had everything in common… There was no needy person among them.” While Luke may have idealized a bit, the truth is that the early disciples lived their faith through generous stewardship. As Christian stewards of today, it is our calling to care for one another and the mission of the Church. Like those early Chris-tians, we recognize that nothing we have is ours. It all comes to us as a gift from our heavenly Father. And thus it is our responsibility to cultivate and wisely care for our time, our talent, and our treas-ure and so use it for love of God and neighbor. Thank you again for all you do to support our parish family in pro-claiming and celebrating the Good News of the Risen Christ!

Lectio Divina Bible Study As followers of Jesus, we want to understand Scripture in a way that applies to our life today. The Christian practice of lectio divina is a way of approaching the Bible that helps Scripture to come alive. Through reading, reflecting and praying, readers trust that God will speak through Scripture when we are open to its message. As we listen and understand the Word of God and find new ways to apply it to our daily life, we become more effective witnesses to Christ.
