The new programmes focus on connecting students with emerging technologies and creative practice relevant to social, economic and cultural enterprise. The Bachelor of Commercial Music The Bachelor of Commercial Music is a new three year degree, offering majors in music practice, music technology and music industry. Subject to CUAP approval it will start in 2016. Future focused and cross-genre, the programme is designed to address the creation, production, and promotion of tomorrow’s music, with an emphasis on new technology and the latest industry models. The degree will be taught by leading New Zealand musicians, technicians and industry specialists, and will offer cutting-edge recording and performance facilities. The programme will closely align with the New Zealand music community. Development team: Associate Professor Andre Ktori Working in music, media and design for over 30 years, Associate Professor Andre Ktori is known for his work in interactive music. Andre is a BAFTA, Milia d’Or and Millennium Product award winner, has exhibited internationally, and has been signed to Warner Brothers and Altantic Records as a recording artist. Warren Maxwell Founding member of Trinity Roots, Little Bushman and ex Fat Freddy’s Drop – Warren Maxwell is a passionate advocate of original New Zealand music. Warren is a graduate of Massey’s Conservatorium of Music (jazz), a Silver Scroll nominee, and recipient of an Arts Foundation New Generation Award. He has toured internationally, released a number of multi-platinum albums and has been involved with sound design, scoring for short films, and many other musical projects. Nicky Harrop Nicky Harrop’s music industry career has seen her hone her skills across all areas of the business, with18 years of experience, working for major labels BMG and Sony Music. In that time, Nicky has helped shape the careers of many of New Zealand’s most successful musicians, while her work with international artists has seen her develop end to end strategies for some of the world’s biggest names. Music practice Study is centred on the development of performance expertise in the student’s choice of instrument, voice, computer or turntable. Students also study composition and arrangement, keyboard skills and songwriting, and gain knowledge of studio recording. All content is firmly based in popular music, covering a wide range of genres and approaches to learning. Music technology Study encompasses studio engineering, live sound and lighting, software, hardware and media production. Students gain a technical and practical knowledge base before moving on to design and develop their own applications. Music industry Areas of study include label development, publishing, artist management, and future industry trends. Skills are developed in the project management of live music for concerts, tours and festivals. Students from all three majors also study a range of shared core papers, and collaborate each semester on external projects. The Bachelor of Creative Media Production The school also offers a three-year practice-based degree in creative media production including subjects such as animatronics, computer animation and motion capture, digital video, game development, audio and sound design, web and mobile development and VFX and motion graphics.

Te Rewa o Puanga - the School of Music and Creative Media Production has been established to respond to New Zealand’s growth and internationally recognised reputation for innovation and creativity in both music and media production.

The Bachelor of Commercial Music

Major projectIn year three, students in each of the majors collaborate to complete self-directed study of a major project.

Music practiceStudents commence their instrument study, supported by a combination of one-on-one and group based learning. Keyboard skills and approaches to songwriting are introduced, and studio production techniques are examined.

Music practiceStudents develop their instrument study, working to gain a professional level of technical and artistic skill. Wider forms in composition and arrangement are proposed, including writing and recording for interactive media.

Music practiceStudents engage in advanced study of their instrumental discipline, self-managing their practice and developing their sense of individual artistry. Studies in composition move beyond conventional boundaries to encompass experimentation and innovation.

Music technologyStudents gain knowledge of studio and live sound engineering, including lighting and AV technologies. Musical interface and interaction are introduced, exploring how performers and consumers interact with a range of musical applications.
