The Bachelor of Education (Physical & Health Education) is a four-year full-time specialist professional qualification that will allow you to graduate as a Health and Physical Education teacher. Subjects are delivered by highly qualified and experienced professionals in a supportive learning environment. The degree develops in each student the requisite pedagogical knowledge and understanding to be an effective classroom ready teacher. Students will be provided with school based practical experiences throughout their degree.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS Direct EntryTo be admitted directly into the Bachelor of Education (Physical & Health Education), applicants must demonstrate one of the following:

1. Achieve at least three Band 5 HSC results,including one in English; or

2. Pass bridging units benchmarked to a Band 5 HSC result; or

3. Completion of a NESA approved alternative entry pathway as advised by your prospective university; or

4. Have completed a Higher Education Degree.

Pathway EntryAn applicant for an Education Degree who does not meet the criteria for direct entry may be permitted to enrol in a linked undergraduate degree (Bachelor of Health and Movement – Elective Stream: Sport) and apply for transfer at the end of Year 1 under the following conditions:

1. A credit average in first year units in the designated ACPE degree; or

2. A credit average in a full year of academic studies at another institution in a degree with ACPE-equivalent and relevant discipline subjects.

CLASSESClasses have a balance of theory and practical content to enhance the student learning experience and prepare students to be classroom ready. You will be taught by experts who are highly trained in their fields and who bring their own practical experience to help provide context to practical subjects.

PRACTICAL CLASSESTo balance the theory portion and enhance the learning experience, students attend practical classes. This will provide further opportunities for mastery of subject material and assist with development of practical application of the theory in each subject.

ASSESSMENTSWhile some subjects require mid-term and final exams, assessments may also comprise essays, research tasks, practical presentations and dance performances. Students enrolled in an online subject sit their final exam at the College or, if they live at a distance, under external supervision.

ONLINE LEARNINGOnline learning allows students to access the same learning resources and support available to on-campus students.

The online learning environment is designed to be interactive, engaging and supportive.

Some subjects may be offered online.

ACPE GENERAL ADMISSION CRITERIAApplicants must meet at least ONE of the following criteria to be considered for admission:

1. A minimum NSW HSC (Higher School Certificate) average of 65 (calculated from the average of the highest 10 units completed) or equivalent

2. A qualification from a recognised higher education provider

3. An Associate Diploma, Diploma, Advanced Diploma, or Tertiary Preparation Certificate from a TAFE or other recognised VET provider qualification (Students wishing to enter through Certificate IV must have completed Year 11 or equivalent)

4. One year full-time or equivalent in a degree course at an Australian university

5. Satisfaction of entry requirements specified under formal articulation arrangements as determined by the ACPE Academic Board

6. A recognised overseas qualification with demonstrated proficiency in English

7. Demonstration of good selection prospects as a student (for example, relevant work experience and motivation to study), and ineligibility to compete for admission based on the academic achievement criteria (1) to (6)

ABOUT ACPEThe Australian College of Physical Education (ACPE) is one of the oldest higher education providers in NSW. For 100 years, the College has been providing first rate, leading edge qualifications in physical education (PDHPE), dance education, sports business, health science, health and movement, coaching, applied fitness, and community health. ACPE courses are delivered at its purpose-built campus on Sydney Olympic Park, with a range of courses and individual subjects offered online. Note: From 2016 all Initial Teacher Education students are required to pass the Government implemented literacy and numeracy test (LANTITE) prior to their final professional experience placement. Students must successfully complete the final professional experience placement to satisfy for the requirements for the Bachelor of Education (Physical & Health Education) course. This test is administered by ACER, not the Australian College of Physical Education. There is a cost associated with taking this external test. The fee for both test components (literacy test and numeracy test) in 2017 is $185 (GST inclusive). The fee for a single test component (literacy test or numeracy test) in 2017 is $92.50 (GST inclusive).

GHS2201 Health: A Sociological Perspective This subject explores health as a result of particular historical, social, cultural, political and economic circumstances. It examines theories and concepts based on current research and encourages students to evaluate differing viewpoints on issues relating to health in an Australian context.

HSC1202 Musculoskeletal Anatomy and Physiology

This subject introduces concepts of the structure and function of systems within the human body focusing on anatomical structures influencing movement, and the effect of body system interactions on homeostasis.

PER1201 Theory and Application of Playing Sport

This subject develops knowledge of different instructional models available for the coaching of sport, as well as the strengths and weaknesses of those models. It also provides students with the opportunity to evaluate their ability to improve athletic development in others.

SEMESTER 3EDU1101 Classroom Skills I This subject provides pre-service teachers with the skills, knowledge and understanding required for planning and teaching quality learning sessions, and the skills to evaluate and

critically reflect on their own teaching, and student learning.

EDU2102 Curriculum Planning for Learning and Teaching HPE I

In this subject the nature of general curriculum theory & the processes involved in curriculum development are explored. Students critically examine the purpose, nature & structure of the school curriculum and investigate the influences that shape it and the processes that lie behind it.

GHS2101 Contemporary Youth Health In this subject students will explore the nature of young people’s lives today. In doing so students are encouraged to explore the biological (individual), psychosocial (interpersonal), sociological, environmental and political contexts that significantly impact on young people’s lives and health.

PER2101 Composition and Performance This subject emphasises analysis and refinement of performance and composition through the examination of dance and gymnastics. More generally, underlying themes of feedback and assessment are utilised in improving performance.

EDU1202 Intelligence and Cognition This subject investigates and identifies different perspectives on the concepts of intelligence and cognition. Various perspectives on intelligence and the factors that impact the development of intelligence will be explored.

HSC1204 Exercise Prescription throughout the Lifespan

This subject provides the tools needed to recognise health and development issues which may impact the type of exercise prescribed. Students will be introduced to the performance outcomes, skills and knowledge required to apply exercise prescription in accordance with industry standards.

SEMESTER 5EDU2101 Classroom Skills II This subject provides students with an in-depth look at some of the issues covered in Classroom Skills 1. Students will analyse the various models of behaviour management and

their appropriate application in a PDHPE setting. Students will further their knowledge and understanding of the factors that need to be considered for effective instruction and teaching in the classroom, focussing on the use of information and communications technology, cognitive and metacognitive teaching strategies

This subject is focused on providing pre-service teachers with the necessary skills required to implement the Stage 6 PDHPE syllabus in NSW. The broader social and cultural forces that shape the delivery and successful implementation of the PDHPE syllabus are also a focus of the unit.

Student DiversityThis subject gives pre-service teachers an understanding of adolescents who come from diverse backgrounds. Through the subject students will acquire an appreciation of the concept of diversity by exploring the way in which cultural beliefs, the family, peers, gender, schools and the media influence socialisation and adolescent development.

EDU3203 Research in Action (Education) This subject develops a research perspective in students and an awareness of research methodologies. Students will explore discipline and methodological literature which will lead to a research proposal and a small scale investigation into an area of academic interest.

HSC3203 Sports Medicine This subject introduces the pathology, assessment and management of injuries commonly sustained during sporting activities, assist students in understanding their role and the role of various health professionals in recognising and managing sport related injuries.

PER2301 Athletics and Aquatics Specialisation

This subject develops a deep understanding of the training demands, skills and movement principles in both athletic (track and field) and aquatic events. It also critically analyses the specific biomechanical and physiological principles that apply to various athletic and aquatic events.

SEMESTER 7EDU2103 Community and Family Studies This subject aims to prepare pre-service teachers with the requisite knowledge and pedagogical skills required to competently deliver the content, objectives and outcomes

described in the Stage 6 Community and Family Studies (CAFS) syllabus.

This subject will equip pre-service teachers with the essential knowledge, skills and understanding to plan and develop effective and valid assessment for units of work in their teaching programs, and to implement reporting requirements in NSW schools.

EDU3103 The Inclusive Classroom This subject provides pre-service teachers with the knowledge, understanding and skills to successfully teach Dance and PDHPE to students with additional learning needs within a mainstream educational setting. Students will learn about effective teaching strategies, curriculum adjustments and behaviour support for students with a range of intellectual, physical, psychological and behavioural disabilities.

This subject will integrate previous studies in health, movement and science. In addition, the unit will examine physiological and psychological characteristics of diverse populations together with specific health issues related to each population and how physical activity can be adapted to promote life-long health and participation in physical activity.

Islander EducationThis subject develops an understanding of the educational and cultural issues experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Pre-service teachers will be equiped with the knowledge, skills and sensitivity required to meet the needs of Indigenous students.

EDU3204 Current Issues: A teaching Research Project

This subject enables pre-service teachers to identify and explore contemporary issues within PDHPE and education. The unit provides an opportunity for pre-service teachers to reflect on the social context in which they will be working and to clarify their values and skills with regards to that context.

EDU3205 Leadership And Innovation in Education

This subject introduces pre-service teachers to the study of leadership within a variety of learning organisations and educational settings. Pre-service teachers are encouraged to develop an understanding of leadership, learning organisations, organisational cultures and change.

EDU3206 Literacy for Learning and Teaching

This subject familiarises pre-service teachers with the social or functional approach to literacy espoused in NSW Board of Studies syllabus documents, as well as with the ways literacy is embedded in the PDHPE curricula.
