With growing demand worldwide for lawyersqualified in more than one jurisdiction, thisfour-year double degree programme involves twoyears of study at UCL and two years at theUniversity of Hong Kong (HKU). AccreditationAll UCL Laws undergraduate programmes are recognised as qualifyinglaw degrees (QLDs) by the two main legal professional bodies—the BarStandards Board and the Solicitors Regulation Authority—for thepurpose of exemption from the academic stage of their professionalexaminations.

Degree structure

In each year of your degree you will take a number of individualmodules, normally valued at 0.5 or 1.0 credits, adding up to a total of 4.0credits for the year. Modules are assessed in the academic year inwhich they are taken. The balance of compulsory and optional modulesvaries from programme to programme and year to year. A 1.0 credit isconsidered equivalent to 15 credits in the European Credit TransferSystem (ECTS).

The first two years of study are the same as for the three-year LLBdegree: four compulsory modules are studied in each year. Acompulsory extra-curricular placement at the UCL Centre for Access toJustice will also be undertaken during the first year.

The third and fourth years of study are spent at HKU. In the third yearyou will study compulsory subjects and in the fourth year you will study acombination of compulsory and elective subjects as well as undertake avocational internship.

Please note: students enrolled on this programme will only be permittedto transfer to the three-year LLB degree at UCL or the four-year LLBdegree at HKU in exceptional circumstances and with the approval ofthe respective institutions.

Your learning

During your time at UCL you will be taught through a combination oflectures, seminars and tutorials comprised of eight students. Weencourage substantial student participation and class discussion inseminars and tutorials on the basis of prepared work. Considerableemphasis is placed on small group teaching where you will benefit fromindividual attention and advice.

AssessmentYou are required to pass written examinations each year for mostmodules. In some cases an essay also counts towards the final modulemark.

Your career

Law and lawyers operate across borders and London and Hong Kongare recognised as globally leading centres for law. This programmeallows students to gain an understanding of the legal knowledge andprofessional skills required to practise in both jurisdictions.

Parallel to its internationalised curriculum, this programme incorporatesplacements at both UCL and in Hong Kong to enhance students’ careerskills. The wide range of technical capacities and subjects learnedthroughout your degree will open up many opportunities for you whenyou graduate.

The first cohort of students on this programme is due to graduate in2020; therefore no information about career destinations is currentlyavailable. Please see the first destinations of recent graduates(2013-2015) of the undergraduate Laws programmes at UCL for aselection of representative careers.

Your application

Application for admission should be made through UCAS (theUniversities and Colleges Admissions Service). Applicants currently atschool or college will be provided with advice on the process; however,applicants who have left school or who are based outside the UnitedKingdom may obtain information directly from UCAS.

We are seeking dedicated candidates who have an aptitude forexploring arguments and ideas. Your ability to formulate and expressthoughts and opinions is critical, as is a demonstration of the reasoningskills that are at the heart of a legal education. You should possess aninformed interest in current affairs and in the world around you. Yourmotivation and interest in studying abroad and particularly at HKU willalso be taken into consideration.

Candidates are assessed through their UCAS applications, the NationalAdmissions Test for Law (LNAT) and, in some cases, by interview. Youare required to take the LNAT as soon as possible after submitting yourUCAS application and no later than 20 January in the year in which youare applying. Applicants must link LNAT registration details to UCL.

Typical UPC students will be high achievers in a 12-year school systemwhich does not meet the standard required for direct entry to UCL.
