ECTS credits

ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System) are the stan-dard for all universities in the European Higher Education Area to ensure consistency across the different European education systems. ECTS credits are based on the work students do in per-son, in all the activities of the learning process (classroom hours, study hours, assignments and internships).

1st Cycle: Bachelor's Degree

Bachelor’s degrees (Grado) replace the Spanish qualifications Diplomado and Licenciado. With some exceptions, most involve 180-360 ECTS credits over three to six academic years (including the Graduation Project).

The Bachelor's degree is structured as follows:

> University training subjects (a minimum of 25% of the degree credit total).

3.2. ADMISSION TO DEGREES TAUGHT BY THE SCHOOL OF SPORTS AND EXERCISE SCIENCES

Admission to the Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Science and the double Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Science and Bachelor’s De-gree in Physical Therapy requires a specific admission process, which includes a test of physical fitness and functional assess-ment. The Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Therapy taught entirely in French also has a selective admission process described on the University website.

The dates of the entrance exams for these degree programs and useful additional information for candidates are published on the University website.

3.3. ADMISSION TO THE GLOBAL BACHELOR DEGREE PROGRAMS TAUGHT BY THE SCHOOL OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND COMMUNICATION

What is a Global Bachelor Degree?

The Global Bachelor Degree programs (International Business, International Relations, Double Degree in International Business and International Relations), taught entirely in English, are de-signed to give students an international perspective, offering them a unique opportunity to complete their education at dif-ferent exclusive international destinations: the London School of Economics, Pace University of New York, McGill University or Dublin Business School.

Global program students will have a mentor during their first year at the University, and specialized mentors from the second year onwards (academic, internship, international, professional and scientific), based on the needs of each phase of their studies and until they complete the Bachelor’s Degree. Global program students will also enjoy a range of exclusive extra-academic ac-tivities bringing them into contact with the professional milieu of their degree programs. 2019/20 Academic Year Regulations · Universidad Europea

Prerequisites for access to the program

> Students must have passed a minimum level of English to enter the Global program (see Annex I).

> Students from other universities may transfer when the rec-ognized subjects are from the first or second year of a degree (students transferring from the third, fourth or fifth year will not be accepted).

> Students entering the Global programs by transferring their transcript must pay a regularization fee relating to the premium services of the program.

This regularization will depend on the number of credits rec-ognized in credit recognition report students receive when re-questing to transfer their transcript. It will be calculated using the number of recognized ECTS credits multiplied by the set regularization price per ECTS credit (€40).

> The fee will also be regularized for students changing degree programs within the same School, or changing to a degree in a different Universidad Europea School (including students coming from Advanced Career and Technical Education).

> Once the credit recognition report is ready, the student will be enrolled and will be required to regularize the fee. This fee will be paid together with the first year tuition fees, depending on the payment method chosen. From that time, no more valida-tions can be requested.

> Students who receive a scholarship or grant of more than 50% of the cost of tuition will have to pay the regularization fee of the value added program during the different academic years.

> Students will have to meet the requirements (average grade in the transcript and/or level of English) to be able to go to the ex-clusive destination for their program. These requirements will be defined by the School of Social Sciences and Communica-tion and the host university.

> If a student opts for a period of study abroad in the 3rd year of the Global program outside the Erasmus program, they must pay the corresponding international fee established for all the students in the School, regardless of their degree program.

Cancellation of the program

If for some personal or academic reason a student has to leave the Global program in which they are enrolled, the university will not refund the regularization fee.

Changes in agreements with destination universities

Depending on the program, the host universities are the London School of Economics, Pace University of New York,

McGill University and the Dublin School of Business. If there is any change or cancellation in the student exchange agreement, the School of Social Sciences and Communication will offer stu-dents an equivalent international placement.

2019/20 Academic Year Regulations · Universidad Europea

Under no circumstances will the amounts paid to Universidad Europea de Madrid, S.L.U. be reimbursed.

Enrollment Requirements

First year students must enroll for the whole year. For students transferring from other Universities or Career and Technical Ed-ucation with recognized credits, and for graduate students, the minimum enrollment is for one semester. Class and internship schedules and assessments are established by the relevant School; students must adapt to them based on the groups they are enrolled on.

The University reserves the right not to offer degree programs or to delay their start dates if the minimum number of students required for each course is not reached. Exceptionally, it reserves the right to change the location and campus where it is taught. Also, for subjects which do not reach the minimum number of stu-dents to form a group, the University may organize the teaching in the form of advisory sessions, by offering students personal or online academic advising. Students will be informed of this situa-tion, but the University accepts no liability.

Some of the new degree programs, or those adapted to the Euro-pean Higher Education Area, are still awaiting the final approval of the academic authorities. In this case, if the University cannot deliver these degree programs due to a lack of authorization, the University accepts no liability which may arise from this situation. However, the University will offer students an alternative program from the official degree programs which are already approved and form part of the official academic offer of the 2019/20 aca-demic year. If the student prefers not to study any of the alterna-tives offered, the University will refund the fees it has received.

If the candidate's request should be denied or the course not be delivered due to not enough students enrolling, the student or students involved will be informed, and we will then refund all the fees paid to Universidad Europea de Madrid S.L.U.

Travel or accommodation expenses will not be paid for any de-gree program whose curriculum includes studies outside our cen-ters in Madrid, unless they are part of the degree program.

If there is any discrepancy between the information provided by an adviser and the University Regulations, the latter shall take priority.

Withdrawal

Only in the case that the enrollment has been formalized online, students may withdraw from the enrollment contract within 14 calendar days from the formalization of the enrollment. To this end, the student must send the University (addressed to the Student Services Department) a duly completed and signed with-drawal form, which they can find on the University's website, on the link https://universidadeuropea.es/madrid/matriculacion. The withdrawal of the enrollment contract involves the return of the amounts paid for the transcript and tuition, and the amount

corresponding to the Place Reservation shall in no case be reimbursable.

Integrated study support plan

The tuition discounts included in this regulation, third-party agreements and scholarships awarded by Universidad Europea de Madrid cannot be used in conjunction with each other.

No promotional discount affecting tuition or place reservation fees during the campaign period can be combined with the dis-counts described in these regulations.

These discounts, and those established in third-party agree-ments with the University, do not apply to the Bachelor's Degree in Medicine or the Bachelor’s Degree in Dentistry (unless the con-trary has been agreed in a collective agreement), with the excep-tion of the simultaneous studies discount. Discounts for family members, Alumni, simultaneous studies, or any agreement with Universidad Europea de Madrid cannot be applied to fixed-price degree programs.

So that new students may benefit from the discounts covered in third-party agreements, they must accredit their membership to the Admissions Department of the UNIVERSITY within two months after the date of enrollment in the UNIVERSITY, or if this does not coincide with the start of the course for which they have enrolled, in the two months following that start date, and always within the same academic year they are signing for.

Language requirements

Admission to some bachelor's degree programs will be subject to receiving a certain language level in the entrance exams. The lan-guages and levels required for each degree program can be found in Appendix I of this regulation.

The University will therefore provide a language test as part of the admissions process. Without prejudice to the student having passed or proven the above-mentioned language level during the admissions process, the University reserves the right to provide additional language tests at any point during the academic year so as to verify that the student maintains the level required as per the Bachelor's Degree Admissions Regulations.

In the event that they do not surpass the level required by the Uni-versity admissions process or do not pass the language test con-sidered necessary in accordance with the provisions of the previ-ous paragraph, the University reserves the right to, respectively, not admit the student to the corresponding degree program or to cancel their enrollment, without refunding any amounts paid by the student or their financial guardian.

Additionally, having a B2 level in the language of instruction of the degree program is recommended for optimal academic performance.

7.1. LANGUAGE INFORMATION

The UEM Language Center encompasses and centralizes all lan-guage learning activity to provide a quality education. It offers a wide range of curricular and extra-curricular languages based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

To certify the level acquired, highly reputable internal and ex-ternal exams are held, such as DELE (for non-Spanish speakers), Cambridge, CertAcles English B2 and ÖSD (German).

Language requirements

CURRICULAR LANGUAGES

If there is a language subject in your curriculum, you must reach the minimum level required and specified in Appendix I of this Regulation to pass the subject. It is essential to plan this subject or these subjects well as soon as you start studying at UEM. If you have an official certificate for your language level, you can submit it to update your level. However, no official certification exempts the student from taking the language subject. From the first academic year, we offer free courses to improve your level with a flexible method combining online and on-campus classes. Language subject assessment criteria are available in the Foreign Languages Handbook on the university website.

ENGLISH/SPANISH

We offer English/Spanish courses at all levels and with compati-ble schedules during all semesters. There are also free intensive courses (blended format) before the start of the academic year for students with a low language level.

DEGREE PROGRAMS REQUIRING A LANGUAGE TO GRADUATE

If your curriculum does not include a language subject but does have a required level for graduation, you must accredit that you have passed the language level stipulated in one of the following ways: (1) have taken all the courses necessary to pass that level at the Language Center, or (2) submitting an OFFICIAL certificate (see certificates on the CRUE page) of the level required.

You can see the graduation requirements in Appendix I of these Regulations.

DEGREE PROGRAMS WITH LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS TO AC-CESS TO CLINICAL INTERNSHIPS

The Bachelor's Degree in Dentistry, Bachelor's Degree in Psy-chology and Bachelor's Degree in Physical Therapy all require students to accredit level B2.2 in Spanish in order to access curricular and extracurricular clinical practice. In the case of the Bachelor's Degree in Dentistry and the Bachelor's Degree in Psychology, transfer students must accredit level B2.2 before beginning their internships.

7.2. REQUIREMENTS FOR CURRICULAR OR EXTRA-CURRICULAR INTERNSHIPS

Organic Law 1/1996, on the Legal Protection of Minors, amend-ed by Law 26/2015, of July 28, establishes the obligation to provide a negative certificate from the Central Sex Offender Registry for all individuals who will have direct, regular con-tact with minors as a result of their professional activity.

Pursuant to this Law, in order to access internship centers with minors, students must submit the Negative Sexual Of-fenses Certificate.

Universidad Europea will require this certificate from stu-dents before they begin their curricular or extra-curricular internship; at this time students must submit the certificate as required.

International students with no NIE must pro-vide a certificate from their country of origin indicating they have committed no sexual offenses, or failing this, must sign a State-ment of Compliance declaring that they have no criminal record for this type of offenses.

Students who do not submit as required the Sexual Offenses Certificate, or where appropriate the Statement of Compliance for international students with no NIE, may not do internships at centers, clinics or hospitals where they will have direct and regu-lar contact with minors.

7.7. OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION

Before coming to Spain

STUDENT VISAS

International students (except for those taking online courses, with no need to come to Spain) who are not resident in or nation-als of European Union States, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein must obtain a visa for the period of their chosen program, accord-ing to these guidelines:

For stays of up to six months, students must request a 180-day visa. For stays longer than six months, students must request a visa for the full time required to complete the chosen program, as well as the corresponding Foreigners’ Identity Card within one month of arriving in Spain, in accordance with article 39 of RD 557/2011 of April 20.

In this case (periods over six months), the visa issued by the Em-bassy or Consulate would be for 90 days, which can be extend-ed to the total period required by the program once in Spain, as explained below in relation to the Foreign Resident Identification Number (NIE).

It is important to remember that an 180-day visa cannot be re-newed in Spain, so you would have to request a new visa if you wanted to stay in Spain for longer. To do this, international stu-dents must go to a Spanish Embassy or Consulate abroad, but not necessarily in their country of origin.

Students must request their visa in person from the Spanish Con-sulate or Embassy. To find the address of the Spanish Consulate or Embassy in your country of origin, go to www.maec.es, , the website of Spain’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.

The Embassy or Consulate staff will tell you what documents you need in order to obtain the visa. Although it usually takes around

39

four to six weeks to get a visa, we recommend beginning the pro-cess at least two months before the chosen course starts, so that international students can start their classes on time.

To help with the process, here is a list of the requirements and documentation you need to obtain a visa:

> Passport valid at least for the duration you plan to request for your stay (provided by the student).

> A document indicating that the student has enough money to live on (provided by the student).

> A letter of admission to the education institution (provided by Universidad Europea de Madrid [*]).

> A Criminal Record Certificate (provided by the student).

> Application processing fees paid.

> Private medical insurance with repatriation coverage (provided and paid for by the student) (the university recommends taking out an insurance policy [**]).

The cost of the medical insurance will be assumed by the student.

You can follow this link to take out insurance with AON Seguros, or if you prefer, use an insurance company of your choice: www.aonstudentinsurance.com.

For programs which include staying in a country outside of Eu-rope, international students and their insurance companies should consider whether they need to take out another insurance policy to cover these stays.

This insurance can be taken out by any student applying to any program at Universidad Europea de Madrid or the European Ca-reer College of Madrid.

In the case of students from any member State of the European Union, we suggest obtaining the European Health Insurance Card in their country of origin.

The University is available at any time to help international stu-dents resolve any issue which may arise during the process of obtaining their visa.

(LEGAL NOTICE: Students should note that the company AON Risk Solutions – AON Affinity offers the option of taking out private medical insurance. Students take out insurance policies from the company AON Risk Solutions – AON Affini-ty. The University accepts no liability for any claims arising as a consequence of this contract between the student and the insurance company.

(*) LETTER OF ADMISSION TO THE EDUCATION INSTITUTION So that students can manage their visa application process, once they have paid their Place Res-ervation and Enrollment fees, Universidad Europea provides them with a Letter of Admission to their chosen program, specifying its name, the start and end dates, the number of hours, and any other details about the program.

(**) PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE Medical insurance is mandatory for all inter-national students who require visas in order to study in Spain (i.e., students who are not residents in or nationals of European Union member States, Norway, Ice-land or Liechtenstein). Not being insured means running the risk of not receiving the appropriate health care.

When in Spain(1)

Universidad Europea reminds students that the visa issued by Spain allows them to travel freely in all the countries within the Schengen Area. The visa is not valid outside this area.

Student Card / Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE)

The NIE is the number used to identify foreign residents in Spain. This number is unique and personal.

> International students who are nationals of or residents in a Eu-ropean Union country can get a NIE number by registering with the EU Resident Registry.

> For international students from countries outside the European Union, the NIE number is included in the Student Card.

Once in Spain, international students with visas should request a Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE), which will serve as a res-idence permit for students with 90-day visas who have to extend their legal stay in Spain.

The Student Card will replace the student visa issued in the country of origin, enabling holders to travel in Schengen Area countries without the need for a visa, and provides a legal basis for their stay in Spain.

Students should apply for the card within one month of arriving in Spain, and before their visa expires. The card includes a Foreign Resident Identity Number (NIE). Until you have the card, we do not advise leaving Spain, as international students may find they have problems getting back in.

Documentation and process

Students should bring their passport, plus a copy of it.

Students who are not nationals of or residents in a European Union country must also bring their visa to these offices, where they can request an appointment to get fingerprinted and pay the official fee.

International students who are nationals of or residents in a Eu-ropean Union country will immediately be issued a registration certificate showing the name, nationality and address of the registered person, their foreign resident identity number, and the date of registration.

International students who are not nationals of or residents in a European Union country will immediately be given an appoint-ment and told what documents to bring. For information purpos-es, these are usually documents which accredit that the student:

> Meets all requirements for entering and remaining in Spain, in-cluding a visa, granted specifically for studying at any officially recognized public or private institution (passport and visa).

> Has been accepted, according to normal regulations, to any officially recognized public or private education or scientific institution in order to carry out unpaid study, training or re-search tasks, with an indicated timetable requiring the student to attend, for three months or more, including the approved study, research or training plan (letter of admission).

> Has guaranteed sufficient funds to pay for their studies, living expenses and travel to their country of origin for themselves and their family members, if applicable.

This information may change to reflect current legislation.

The student has guaranteed health care through a medical in-surance policy with unlimited coverage nationwide (medical insurance).

Other documents which are often requested include:> Municipal registration certificate (empadronamiento).> Two (2) passport sized photos (3 x 4 cm)

The period of permission to stay may be limited to the length of the study, research or training course. If the course is more than twelve months, the card can be renewed annually.

In all cases, to renew permission to stay in order to study, students must present a certificate from the center where they are taking the course, accrediting compliance with the requirements for continuing to study, or a favorable report on the research project.

Opening a bank account in Spain Spain's banking and building society infrastructure is among the most highly developed in the world, with one of the highest ratios of bank branches per capita.

To open a current account in a Spanish bank, you just need your Student Card / Foreign Resident Identification Number (NIE).

Depending on the bank, there may be other requirements, such as depositing a certain amount of money, showing a payslip, provid-ing a photo or fingerprints, or a letter of introduction.

The most common procedure is to open a current account -which usually carries low or no maintenance charges- associated with a debit card, which allows you to make purchases and withdraw cash up to the limit of the amount available in the account. You can use the debit card to withdraw money from any cash point (ATM), although this will be free of charge only in the cash points of the bank or building society of the account, and the others will charge a fee.

International students can open a bank account once they are in Spain. On the Villaviciosa Campus of Universidad Europea de Madrid there is a bank branch where you can open an account if you want.

Support services for your stay in Spain

To prepare for their trip to Spain, international students who will be staying in Madrid can consult and download our Practical Guide, in Spanish, from our website www.universidadeuropea.es.
