How does good health grow in your community? Do you and your neighbors plant the seeds by taking steps to keep your families healthy? Does it sprout and start to blossom when you quit smoking or walk a mile? “Growing health” can include all of these things. At Kaiser Permanente, we’re committed to helping North County cultivate better health every day.

That’s why we’re excited to announce the opening of our new Rancho Bernardo Medical Offices. Here’s our new address:

Kaiser Permanente Rancho Bernardo Medical Offices Excel Centre 17140 Bernardo Center Drive San Diego, CA 92128

The new, state-of-the-art facility will offer primary care (now including pediatrics), radiology, and pharmacy services. We’re also adding an obstetrics/gynecology department. That means you’ll be able to receive a wide range of high-quality care for you and your family—all at this same convenient location.

Combined with our existing facilities in North County, the new Rancho Bernardo Medical Offices will help us grow good health throughout the community.

For the most part, when you think of November you think of Thanksgiving Day. The holiday dates back to the 1600’s when the Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians shared an autumn harvest feast in a show of good faith and cooperation. Yes, this is the month to give thanks for all you have - for your family, for the food on your table, and for the roof over your head. At the Thanksgiving table, everyone will solemnly bow their heads and be asked to share something they are thankful for.

Truly, we should give thanks for all we have, but along with the traditional, sincere, thanksgiving ritual, here are a few more animated things that I am thankful for.

I am thankful for……having the strength to smile at my son when he

asks for a ride to go ice skating at 10 at night because, well, ‘everyone’ is going.

…the good sense to not ram my car up the rear end of the car in front of me because the driver did not bother looking to see how fast on-coming traffic was moving before he cut in front of me.

…not taking the dog to a ranch in faraway India every time she finds a way to escape out of our yard and I have to go hunt her down.

…the ability to realize when the telemarketer on the phone has an IQ of 27 and any attempt to rationalize with him/her is futile.

…the patience to tune out my daughter’s whining when I tell her to get ready for soccer practice or ask her to clean her room.

…the “little” things which have become so much a part of life – cell/smart phones (I mean honestly, can you live without your cell phone?), digital cameras/videos, the internet, deodorant, hot showers, flip flops and sweat-shirts.

By all means be grateful for all you have and make sure to express the appropriate amount of gratitude at the Thanksgiving table, but this year make it a bit more fun. After the initial prayers and humbleness, go around the table one more time and add a fun twist of thankfulness. A little laughter goes a long way and studies have shown that laughter adds years to your life.

In closing, I want to thank all of you for reading Back At The Ranch and for making this such an amazing place to live. HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!

From mid-August through September, photos of families, kids, pets and loved ones enjoying summertime in 4S Ranch were submitted for entry into round one of the photo contest. The contest invited amateur photographers to submit their “Favorite Summer Photo in 4S Ranch” for a chance to win a $1,000 Visa gift card. Round two of the photo contest continued into the month of October with residents submitting their “Favorite Fall Photo in 4S Ranch”.

Over 900 people voted in the September contest - Shana Sanguinetti and Heather Long received the most votes for photos of their children. Both Shana and Heather won $250 Visa Gift Cards and are now entered for the chance to win the $1,000 grand prize.

When asked what she will use the $250 for Shana Sanguinetti said, “I’m so happy to win the photo contest and donate the $250 to the Ronald McDonald House. My husband was diagnosed with cancer three months ago and although it has been rough on our family, we decided to take a negative and make it a posi-tive by donating our time and money to the Ronald McDonald House. We will be using the proceeds to cook and host a dinner there in October.”

Cruise Into Summer

Set sail this July on a “Mediterranean Odyssey!” EF Tours has created a customized, fully escorted tour of southern Italy and Greece for students, friends, and families of Oak Valley Middle School.

The adventure begins in Rome and southern Italy, continues to mainland Greece, and ends with a four-day cruise of the Greek Isles. The Mediterranean Odyssey includes a full-time tour guide, expert local guides in most cities, and express entrance to places like the Colosseum, Vatican Museum, Pompeii, and the Acropolis in Athens.

Highlights of this tour include Rome, Ostia, the Catacombs, Capri, Sorrento, Mt. Vesuvius, Olympia, Epidaurus, Mycenae, Delphi, and Athens. Then enjoy a four-day cruise of the beautiful whitewashed isles of Greece. Ports of call include Mykonos, Patmos, Kusadasi, Rhodes, Heraklion, and Santorini.

All ages are welcome and several families have signed up already to enjoy the journey together. Oak Valley teachers Tom Downs and Bret Fitzpatrick will be along to escort students who travel without families. A full-time EF tour guide will be with the group from arrival in Rome to departure from Athens. If you have ever wanted to visit Europe and let someone else worry about the details, this is the trip for you.

Prices include airfare, hotels, breakfast and dinner daily, and transfers to and from airports in Europe. Interest in the trip has been strong and only a few seats remain. Tour dates are July 2 through July 16. If you are interested, please contact Tom Downs at [email protected]. To see the complete itinerary, go to www.eftours.com and enter tour code 636115 to see all of the details.

Our schools and h1n1 fluDuring the month of October Oak Valley Middle School experienced

a full week of above normal absences. Because of this, all the major TV news stations were onsite to cover “the story”. It is important to note that the vast majority of the absences were confined to the sixth grade. Sixth grad-ers had recently returned from a week-long over-night camp. Of the absences, very few were known diag-nosed H1N1, a handful were for family or personal non-illness reasons and an additional handful were stu-dents kept at home though not ill.

The District continues to work closely with the San Diego County Department of Public Health, and their medical staff is following up directly with families and the students’ healthcare providers. Neither the Public Health Department nor our own inquiries have revealed any cases of serious student illness or hospitalization.

Our schools continue teaching our students proper personal hygiene, and hand sanitizer and wipes are being used where needed and appropriate. There is also an increased level of custodial support for cleaning at night.

Help keep your children and our schools Flu-Free!

• Wash hands often with soap and water or an alcohol-based hand rub.

• Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed cups/utensils or cell phones.

• Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or “catch your cold in your elbow” when you cough or sneeze.

• Do not send children to school if they are sick! • Keep sick children at home for at least 24 hours after the fever is gone

without using fever-reducing drugs.• Check with your doctor about getting yourself and your children vac-

cinated for seasonal (regular) flu and H1N1 flu.

Please visit the PUSD website at www.powayusd.com for further infor-mation about H1N1. For more information, you may also go to www.flu.gov or call County of San Diego Public Health Services at 619-692-8661.

tribute to two district 31 leaders

As most of you know, 4S Ranch Little League is one of 14 Leagues that make up District 31 in San Diego County. Without the support of the District 31 Board members and volunteers, we would not have the great Little League we have in our community. Our own 4S Board mem-bers put in countless hours behind the scenes to make our League fun for our community. However, these hours pale in comparison to the time and commitment that several of the D31 staff contribute.

Two of these tireless volunteers are Mark and Linda Bernstein. Mark is the D31 Umpire-in-Chief, and his wife, Linda, is the D31 Secretary. Even though their kids are long gone from Little League, they still dedicate countless hours to ensure that our League has all of the support it needs to operate.

In addition to all of the work they do for Little League, this year, Mark and Linda are giving their time and effort to raise money for Breast Cancer Research by participating in the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk. The 3 Day will take place in San Diego on November 20- 22. Participants will walk 60 miles over those 3 days.

Mark and Linda are both cancer survivors, and are eager to share their message in the hope that they can help others overcome this disease. If you can help support them in their journey, visit www.the3day.org, click on “Donate” and search for their names. We truly appreciate the sup-port they have given 4S Ranch Little League, and hope that 4S can push them over the top in their fundraising efforts for this great cause. To make a donation, visit www.the3day.org/site/TR/Walk/SanDiegoEvent2009?px=1032964&pg=personal&fr_id=1298

Thank you very much for your support. We look forward to seeing everyone at our first Little League sign up day on Sunday, November 1st at the RB Fall Festival at 4S Ranch.

WHO ARe THe

people in your neighborhood

Do the words “Kidz Tyme After-School Enrichment Program” mean anything to you? You know those after-school musical theatre, chess and cartooning classes your kids enjoy so much? Ever wonder who was in charge of all those wonderful classes? Well, Virginia Valente is the brains behind this terrific program. Originally from New York, she moved to the San Diego area 31 years ago. Way back when, her husband accepted a job transfer so they found a great place in Poway with plenty of greenery and lots of land. Eventually, both Virginia and her husband Larry were ready to downsize. They were pleased to find the 4S Ranch area five miles down the road from where they were living and everything worked out for the best. Their two children, David and Amy, now have kids of their own and are happily planted in nearby RB and Poway.

Prior to the relocation to San Diego, Virginia held a very prestigious job working with Fred W. Friendly (ex-producer to Edward Murrow) at the Ford Foundation. Virginia was his executive assistant and had to pinch herself on a daily basis. She maintains it was the most fabulous job ever! She absolutely loved what she did and found it most unsettling to have to leave it all behind. So what do you do as a follow up to your dream job? She began by volunteering quite a bit at her children’s schools – Chaparral and Terra Bonita. At the time, “enrichment” classes were run by the PTA and

were exclusive to those schools. Eventually, an idea struck her – I can do this on my own and offer as many classes as I can find instructors for. The program was a rip-roaring success and, after a while, principals from schools throughout the Poway School System were calling her to ask if she would start the program at their individual schools.

Virginia continuously brings in new classes to keep things interest-ing. She currently offers classes from aerobics to beads and jewelry-making to flag football. Everyone she hires to run classes is thoroughly interviewed, background checked and fingerprinted. Furthermore, she requires them to have a CPR card. Because she is always looking for new, fascinating classes to offer, she welcomes your ideas. It could be a great way to get involved with kids and share a hidden talent that you have. Don’t be shy; be sure and contact Virginia at your earliest convenience.

Classes are offered three times a year, during the school year. There is no summer program. You can visit the website for general informa-tion, but for complete class listings, you can contact Virginia or look for flyers at your child’s school. Contact www.kidztyme.org, [email protected] or 858-485-0481.

Virginia is wonderfully organized, resourceful and personable. Your child is in good hands when he/she takes a Kidz Tyme Enrichment class.

Parent Teacher Conference Week

Make sure you’ve noted that the week of Parent Teacher Conferences (November 16 – 20) will have reduced school days so teachers can meet with parents. Students should arrive at school at 8:45 am and school will be dismissed after lunch at 12:30 pm for these 5 days. These are still very important instructional days – so please do not plan to take day off during this week.

ALL ABOARD for Destination Book Fair!

The Stone Ranch Elementary PTA is proud to present the 2009 Scholastic Book Fair. Our theme this year is “Destination Book Fair, Read Around the World!” Book Fairs build an enthusiasm for reading that goes hand in hand with reading instruction and performance. Did you know that half of book fair sales go right back to our school providing the neces-sary literary resources for our classrooms and library?

This exciting event is scheduled the week of November 9 – 13. Students will have the opportunity to visit the book fair on their classroom scheduled day. In addition to classroom visits, there will be special events planned for before and after school shopping!

Monday, November 9, 5:30 – 8:00 pm: Bedtime Story with Mrs. VenoliaCome dressed in your favorite pajamas and have some treats while

enjoying a bedtime story with Mrs. Venolia, Stone Ranch’s School Principal! You can also take advantage of late night shopping hours and get a jump start on your holiday shopping.

Friday, November 13, 7 – 8 am: Shopping with Someone You Love Show off your love of reading by inviting a parent, grandparent, aunt,

uncle, or a friend to browse a large selection of fantastic books at great prices! Donuts and Coffee will be provided.

For added convenience, the PTA will offer morning and afternoon shopping for parents from 7:30 – 8:00 am and 2:30 – 3:00 pm.

Save all of your loose change and drop it off with of our ambassador of reading, “Eli the Elephant”! Stone Ranch will once again, participate in the One for Books Program during this year’s book fair. The week of the book fair, we will collect change to support this program. The change collected will be matched dollar for dollar for book credits for our school and Scholastic will match these funds with contributions to three National Non-Profit Organizations; Kids in Distressed Situations, Inc., National Center for Family Literacy and Marine Toys for Tots Foundation. Look for our ambassador of reading container during the book fair! Questions may be directed to Tammy Sauter at [email protected].

Thank you for supporting Stone Ranch Elementary in providing the necessary literary resources for our classrooms and library!

Library News!

We are happy to announce that the library is now open for business. Students are scheduled for weekly visits throughout the school year. We have lots of great books to share! Watch for the library’s welcome letter (your child’s teacher will be sending them out), that gives you an overview of our library program as well as information about accessing the library online catalog and the wonderful World Book Online from your home. We’d also like to encourage donations to the library anytime (hardback books or monetary); check out our Amazon Wish List on the library’s home page (htt://destiny.powayusd.com). And, if you’d like to help out in the library, let us know!

Choice Program

OVMS Choice Program is a free after-school program that is geared towards helping students make smart choices. Activities include sports, games, homework help, leadership, web designing, media advocacy, crafts, etc. and will be in the Falcon Center Rm. 406 from 3:05-5:05 pm, Monday through Friday. Parent permission is required. Please contact: Student Services Specialist Sandy Stromberg at 858-487-7293 x6406 or [email protected].

PTSA BuxBack Program

We have a great opportunity to raise money for our school that requires you to do nothing. A San Diego-based company called BuxBack (www.buxback.com) allows you to enroll for free and transform your existing credit/debit cards into auto-matic ‘savings cards’ when you buy from local participating merchants like Panera®, Brett’s BBQ® and Bruegger’s Bagels®. The monies earned can then be directly donated to OVMS PTSA. It’s that easy! Enroll TODAY at www.buxback.com.

Recycling Has Returned

Recycling at the flagpole began on Tuesday, October 6 and will continue on the first Tuesday of every month. November 3 is the next recycling day for our school. Bring a large bag full of bottles or cans and receive a pass excusing you from a run during PE. Last year, our recycling program raised over $1,000 and was able to fund such activities as the art in the quad and the gardening club. Please continue to support recycling at Oak Valley. Go Green!

Credit Card Prepaid School Lunches

The Food and Nutrition Department is pleased to introduce an exciting new service for school meal prepayments. Effective immediately, parents of students can log onto www.myLunchMoney.com and prepay for their child’s meals using their Visa or MasterCard. The charge for this service is a flat fee of $1.95 per credit card transaction regardless of the amount paid. Parents can also call a toll free number at 1-800-479-3531 to enroll by phone.

The online account allows parents to view their child’s balance and make pay-ments any time of day. Parents can also set up “one-time” or recurring prepayment transactions. In a future upgrade, parents will be able to view their child’s meal purchases and spending history, set limits for meal purchases, and view nutritional content of their child’s meals.

Parents who need assistance should contact the company’s customer support team at 1-800-479-3531 or visit www.myLunchMoney.com. Parents may also contact the Food and Nutrition Department Supervisor, Christi Tulenko by calling 858-487-2939 x6173 or [email protected].

6th Grade Camp

Roughly 400 6th graders packed their bags, towels and pillows and hopped on a bus to either Camp Cuyamaca or Camp Fox. There was nervousness in the air and there were some tears, but for the most part the 6th graders were excited about the adventure that lay ahead.

Upon arrival, kids were assigned to cabins where they picked bunk beds and dropped off their belongings. Each day was filled with day hikes, night hikes, campfires, singing, stories and games. Several new activities were added, including rock climbing. The kids were able to put on harnesses and use belay equipment for an authentic rock climbing adventure! Five days flew by and suddenly it was time to go home. One sixth grader, Karli Renken, had this to say about the experience: “I loved it and for any future 6th grader, they should go!”

It’s a fun way to get fit and a fantastic way to start your day! We have monthly incentives to encourage regular participation. In addition to ribbons, you can earn trinkets following monthly themes. Listen carefully at Friday Flag for more information. For safety reasons, please do not drop your child off before 8:30 am. Laps run before our volunteers arrive can not be counted.

Ice Cream Sales

Join us every Wednesday after school for a treat. Ice Cream is $1 and the profits help support PTA programs. Coupon books can be purchased ~ 10 coupons for $7.50. Leave a message for Mary in the PTA voicemail box at 858-487-6887 x6123.

PTA Tax Help Wanted

We are looking for someone to com-plete a 990EZ tax form for the Monterey Ridge PTA, a 501(c) organiza-tion. A small contribution of your time would really help our school. The International Fall Festival offered a wide spread of entertainment and goodies for everyone. There was music, pie eating contests, cake walks, airbrush tattoos and more. It was another successful event and Monterey Ridge Elementary School would like to thank: Wells Fargo, Ralphs, 4S USSD Karate, Parklane Jewelry, Floaties, Financial Freedom, Zija Intl, Gyminny Kids, RE/MAX, Starbucks, Moser Orthodontics and 4S Ranch Library for their generous donations.

We would also like to thank MRES parents for donating baked goodies in our cake walk games and for all our wonderful volunteers!

Girls Tennis Team First to Record a Win for Del Norte!

Coach Brandon Sieh is quite proud of his girls tennis team. Not only are they crushing the competition, they were the first team to record a win for Del Norte. Coach Sieh lives and works in the com-munity, but is originally from Seattle. He recognizes that there is a lot of tennis talent in the community and is looking forward to developing the team in years to come. Currently, there are 19 players on the team. Only the top 9 get to play in matches, but everyone plays quite a bit at practice during the week so the girls are constantly “fighting” to win a spot in the top 9. Currently, the top players on the team are Kylie Haviland, Yolanda Pham, and Casey Schroder. GO NIGHTHAWKS!

Greetings Del Sur Explorers!

Message from Principal Doug JohnsonThanks to the efforts of our Foundation, grants, and Title One money,

our students will have access to three educational software programs that will augment their academic success.

Our primary students will be working with the Lexia program. Students using Lexia are provided with explicit, systematic and structured practice in phonological awareness and phonics skills which support gains in reading fluency and comprehension. Our students can access this program both at school and at home.

All students in kindergarten through fifth grade have access to Accelerated Reader. This is a program where students can check their com-prehension on their independent reading books. This program can only be accessed from school.

Finally, we are excited to report that our second through fifth grade stu-dents will have access to Compass Learning in the area of English Language Arts. This program provides students with extra practice and enrichment in language arts based on their RIT score as gleaned from our Measure of Academic Performance – MAP.

These three programs have a proven success rate with students. Parents, please encourage your child to work with these programs on a regular basis. Our teachers will provide information to all of you concerning how to access these programs. Additionally, our school is going to support student access to these programs by opening our computer lab in the morning before school. Our computer lab will be open from 7:30 to 8:25 on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday.

Thanks for your continual support of our endeavors. Together, we will provide an optimal educational experience for each of our students at Del Sur.

Del Norte Water Polo

Coach Nick Naiman has big dreams for the Del Norte Aquatics Program. The boys water polo team has already made an impression as a strong force in North County. Currently, the team has a respectable 3 – 3 record. They play in the Valley League, but also played in the Coronado Invite during the month of October. (Press dates precluded us from printing the results during this issue.) Come out and support them as they finish their season.

The final two games will take place on Wednesday, November 4, Ramona, Del Norte HS Pool, 4 pm, JV/Nov and Friday, November 6, Mt. Carmel, Mt. Carmel HS Pool, 3:15 pm JV/Nov.

The girls’ pre-season training has started and their competitive debut will begin on November 16. The Del Norte Aquatic Center has 14, 25-yard lanes, which are currently being used by the Poway Valley Water Polo Club and Pacific Swim, as well as Del Norte High Athletics and Exercise Nutritional Science classes. Coach Naiman envisions having junior and adult water polo leagues as well as youth swimming and aquatics.

For more information, contact Nick Naiman at [email protected] or visit delnortenights.com.

Student Pick Up and Drop Off

We have a lot of pedestrian traffic at the start and end of the day. Please watch your speed entering and exiting the campus. If you’re picking up or dropping off a student either before or after school, you must be parked along the white curb at the front of the school or parked in the student parking lot to the north. The south lot - near the stadium - is for staff only. (Parents of athletes, you can park in the staff lot before 7:45 am and after 3:45 pm; however, there is no in-and-out traffic allowed from 7:45-8:10 am or from 3:15-3:45 pm.) Please do not attempt to pick up or drop off students out in the street or driveway or to park in red zones or fire lanes.

cOmmunity lifestyle: family

Howdy Stranger! Welcoming Guests for the HolidaysAs the holiday season descends upon us, many families will be inundated

with visitors. Whether it’s close family, extended relatives or longtime friends passing through, there are ways to make changes in your home to accommodate the extra inhabitants with ease.

Perhaps the best way to tame the upcoming upheaval is to determine which areas your guests will frequent most. That way, there’s time to carve out some space for them. Common areas would be the kitchen, guest bed and bath rooms, and living or family areas. Closet clearing is a top priority; not only are jackets and coats bulkier at this time of year, but it’s better to have some air circulating for your clothes anyway, since this makes them last longer. Entrances will require some freed up inches to account for extra sets of shoes and bags.

If you have a little space and some time, consider devoting one cabinet for a complete dining setup – everything from plates to bowls to juice tum-blers. That way dad doesn’t have to play a guessing game whenever he wants a drink, and if sis decides to wash her own dishes, she knows where they go back. This is an especially good sanity-saving solution for longer stays. If you’re the type to get mildly annoyed when things are returned to a different location despite the best of intentions, thus making it impossible for you to use your own kitchen, consider it. There’ll be less family friction!

Having company is an opportunity for you to live a slightly more gour-met lifestyle. (Keep your budget on track by taking a few minutes each week to browse sales at the supermarket and home stores for festive items.) If the relatives are old enough, bring out the fancier tablecloths and placemats. Upgrade your coffee, tea and drinks. Store more interesting hors d’oeuvres in the freezer. Stash exotic jams and jellies in the pantry. Make the preparation of homemade cookies or a turkey dinner a reason to congregate and share the effort. Guests are, for the most part, only too happy to help – especially when there’s a delicious end to things.

In the spare bedroom, prepare for an anticipated arrival with a bin stocked with basics any vacationer can use (although they may bring their own preferred brands). Toiletries, disposable toothbrushes and razors, a hair dryer and a travel nail kit are essentials. Luxe things up with room spray, aromatic diffusers or a scented candle. Have bottled water or a filled carafe on the bedside table. If fresh cut blooms won’t last the length of their visit, a trio of bright green bamboo shoots can be a low-maintenance alternative for a flower arrangement.

Create an engaging environment in the family room with an assort-ment of books and magazines that will appeal to the interests of guests both young and old. Have age appropriate toys, from stuffed animals to gaming systems, making sure that you have a deck of cards and some board games to encourage unplugged conversation. Add some local maps and guidebooks on San Diego that cater to specific tastes, from nature trails to the bar scene. This information can be placed in a decorative keepsake folder that guests can peruse at their leisure, and take home with them when the time comes for them to take their leave.

One uncommon touch you can provide to make a visit extra special can be a “Welcome” sign. Enlist the kids to create a big greeting on oversized cardboard; great for those families that only get to see the grandparents a few times a year. Even adults can use a small portable chalk or white board to write down a salutation, and have it near a bottle of sparkling wine to toast a new arrival. It’s a small bit of ceremony that kicks off festivities in a distinctive way.

But all good things, sadly, must end at some point. Present your visitors with a gift bag to take away with them. This doesn’t have to be a store-bought solution; something that has been made or baked will have special meaning as well. It’s merely a simple yet thoughtful way to end the stay on a warm note. And when they head back to reality, it will be a fond remem-brance from you to your guests of time well spent.

New Sensor Exposes Household Water LeaksIt’s one o’ clock in the morning, and, like most homeowners,

you’re tucked in and fast asleep. What you don’t know, how-ever, is that, while you’re happily dreaming in Snoozeville, your kitchen sink pipes have suddenly sprung a leak, and your house could be a flood disaster zone before you even start thinking about that first cup of coffee in the morning!

You should never have to wake up to the nightmare of flooded floors, soaked walls and huge water bills because the Ideal Water Alarm™ —a simple-to-use new leak detection device—blows the whistle on those destructive leaks long before they can cause hundreds or thousands of dollars in water-related damage.

Jay Brandt and Steve Kelchlin, are co-owners of Water Response Innovations, Inc., a San Diego company which sells the Ideal Water Alarm™.

“Our battery-operated, stand-alone product not only sounds an alarm at 110 decibels if it detects even the tiniest moisture from water leaks, it’s small enough to fit in your hand,” says Kelchlin. “The Ideal Water Alarm™ is very affordable, and it’s simple to place next to water heaters, under sinks, near toilets, dishwashers, ice makers and washing machines, or wherever else there may be indoor plumbing and potential water leaks.”

Because nearly a third of homes will experience water leaks at some time, the chances of having a flood in the home are far greater than those of having a fire, explains Kelchlin, adding that a one-eighth-inch hole in a pipe with 40 pounds of water pressure—less than what most homes use—

can leak 2,400 gallons of water in a day! Some insurance companies are now recommending that homeowners obtain water leak detectors like the Ideal Water Alarm™, says Brandt, and they are providing insurance premium credits when the devices are installed.

“The Ideal Water Alarm™ is a great way conserve water, too,” says Kelchin. “The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that if homeowners could eliminate five percent of the worst leaks, 177 billion gallons of water could be saved per year.” “And with the ongoing water rationing program here in Southern California, our Ideal Water Alarm™ is not only

a way for homeowners to keep water-leak damage repairs at a minimum,” he explains, “it’s a great way to keep water bills down, and help to conserve water which is absolutely critical right now and for the future!”

To learn more about the Ideal Water Alarm™, visit www.idealwateral-arm.com. For a hands-on demonstration and more information about their water detection product, be sure to visit Water Response Innovations, Inc. at the Griffin Ace Hardware located in 4S Ranch and Del Mar/Carmel Valley on November 7 from 12 to 3 pm.

With the recent government involvement in numerous

areas of my family’s future, i want to show my older chil-

dren how important it is to get involved in local issues that

will impact their health and well being in the future. do

you recommend this? h.O.

Community involvement of all ages is critical to improve education and strengthen our neighborhoods. both are important topics not only to adults, but naturally for our youth. Political involvement is essential in creating strong communities. Your children might wish to become involved in a Young Democrats or Young Republicans group. Girl Scouts and boy Scouts provide a structured and uni-versal outreach and education for all youth. Or, if they are passion-ate about a particular subject, there are numerous ways in which you can explore activities that will promote increased quality of life. Through shared commitment and knowledge, we can build and sus-tain communities together. Just lending a helping hand when it’s needed, will make a positive difference where we live, work and play.

Neil Goldfinger, mD Pedicatrics, Centre for Healthcare, www.pph.org

especially considering the economy, my family has so

much to be grateful for this year. how can i instill this

appreciation in my children during the holidays? W.t.

The holiday season brings many teaching opportunities. There are a number of ways you can help children develop a sense of grati-tude. First, always lead by example. If your children don’t see you doing it, they won’t maintain your direction. Recently, it has become popular for many adults to maintain “gratitude journals”. This is a good practice for youth to do as well. Another idea is purposefully going without something. That will help your children not to take things for granted. One of the most important elements in teaching gratitude is sharing with your children not to focus on just material possessions when expressing their appreciation, but include things such as when someone holds the door open, the fact that they have a family, and that their neighborhood is clean and safe. Once you all start looking for items to be grateful for, you can turn it into a family game and a daily habit.

Gifts that HealAs we wander through the aisles of

department stores, warehouse stores and gaze at all of the possibilities for gift giving, the choices can be confusing and overwhelming.

Because so many of us are also con-cerned about managing health conditions and watching our weight, why not con-sider thoughtful and useful gifts that may help those that we love (including our-selves!) improve their health and well being throughout the year? I’d like to recommend some ideas for holiday presents that would delight most anyone, and additionally, are guilt-free!

Gift certificate for high quality shoes. When your feet feel good, you want to walk more, which leads to better fitness. If foot problems are present, high quality, properly fitted shoes can enhance mobility and reduce risks of further injury. Foot Solutions and the Comfort Shoe Center are both local stores that provide these products.

Healthy cookbooks: Cookbooks from the American Heart Association, American Diabetes Association or the American Dietetics Association are all wonderful resources of both nutrition information, as well as great reci-pes. Cooking Light magazine also publishes an annual cookbook that is beautifully illustrated with wonderful recipes.

Gift Certificate for a gym membership, or personal trainer consultation. Proper guidance by a trained fitness professional can help you or a loved one find what exercises work best for you and your individual goals. I often refer to a physical therapist as well, if there are medical or orthopedic problems present, to minimize risk of injury or exces-sive stress on the joints. Exercise is also a wonderful way to manage stress during the holidays as well as throughout the year.

A pedometer. This fun and useful gadget is a wonderful way to track your activity level throughout the day. They are available in sporting goods stores and can motivate you to walk more to meet your fitness goals.

Fruit basket or a fruit-of- the month club gift. This encourages healthy eating by providing nutritious foods right to our door!

A consultation with a registered dietitian along with personalized meal planning, taking into account food preferences, busy schedules, and medical conditions can save a great deal of time and money, and help reduce risk of and/or manage diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, cancer and obesity. This service is called medical nutrition therapy, and in some cases may be covered by insurance.

Sharing RecipesSharing recipes is a great way for us as a community to connect with

each other and to have fun trying new foods with our families. If you have

a recipe you’d like to share, send it to [email protected]. Here’s a fun

one to try this month:

4S RANCH

business spotlight

The RB Courtyard Office Complex is a local, family-owned property which far exceeds any preconceived notions of what a multi-tenant facility should look or operate like. Mr. Alan Yaghdjian is the proud owner who just last month celebrated 15 years of spectacular success.

Mr. Yaghdjian’s story is one of perseverance, determina-tion and just plain hard work. He migrated to the US from Egypt as a young 18 year old with dreams and ambitions. He put himself though college, graduated and became quite the real estate entrepreneur. He began in residential, but quickly moved on to commercial real estate which is how he found himself faced with the opportunity to purchase the RB Courtyard property.

The property was originally built as the Oak Industries Headquarters, but was converted to multi-tenant in the early 90s. Mr. Yaghdjian saw the infinite potential of the building and purchased it shortly thereafter. Already an architecturally stunning facility, Mr. Yaghdjian has since molded and shaped the complex into a reflection of his own visions. It is truly a family-owned and operated property. Husband and Dad, Alan, is a well respected businessman with only your best interests in mind. Daughters Mary Ann and Joanne, both graduates of USC, assist in the management of the building. In a world where most commercial properties of this mag-nitude are owned by large corporations, this is no small undertaking by the Yaghdjian family. Neither do they treat it as such. Their tenants are their gems and they go out of their way to provide over-the-top, first rate service. Instead of sterile, impersonal relationships, tenants are treated as personal family friends. In fact, many are just that. Numerous tenants have had roots in the facility for over 20 years!

The Spanish-style courtyard complex has interior spaces which boast solid wood beams, hardwood flooring, dramatic lobbies, and hand-painted tiles. The offices are all complimented and surrounded by lush landscaping and centered with a soothing courtyard fountain. They have eight orange trees on site from which the Yaghdjian family generously shares bags of oranges with all their tenants. There’s even an extended duck family who have come to realize how special the place is - they have a yearly migration every spring. All tenants know to watch out for mama ducks and little ducklings during the migration period.

RB Courtyard offers space from 200 square feet to 20,000 square feet. If the size or layout you are looking for is not available, they do have waiting lists, which they maintain with great care. The complex offers full-time, on site maintenance. The maintenance supervisors, Chris and Rafael, have been with Mr. Yaghdjian for 15 and 12 years respectively and are on a first name basis with all the tenants. The complex currently houses an online music company, attorneys, CPAs, psychologists and financial planners to name a few. You are in good company with whatever business you are operating.

Whether you have been searching for a place to open your business, you are in need of more space, or you are tired of your current situation, you really should consider visiting RB Courtyard. The personalized, family-oriented,

ethical treatment is second to none. The unique charm and stunning beauty of the complex is unprecedented and you have, as they say, location, location, location. The RB Courtyard has been a proud neighbor and contributing member of both the local and San Diego community.
