BBS 15th Anniversary: Spring! A Time to Rejoice

‘Spring! A Time to Rejoice’ was the theme of the biggest event of the year for BBS. This event was a spectacular event co-ordinated by our artistic coordinator, Mr Jason Yogawin. It was a mosaic of different performances orchestrated by the various Performing Arts teachers of the different campuses.

The event was showcased twice on the same day in Ba lai Sarbini. Parents were excited and amazed to watch their wards perform since they had practised very hard to make the special event, the best one yet!

Long preparations were done to ensure that a fascinating and marvelous 15th Anniversary Musical Performance would be shown. It started from auditions, teambuilding activities, brainstorming of choreographies, rehearsals, costume planning and many more. At the end, the show was packed with incredible talents from the BBS Orchestra, Chinese Orchestra, Junior Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Choir, Preschool and Primary Performers.

The performance included a heartwarming “Thank You Song” by our K1 students and selected primary students. As Kelvin, one of the Master of Ceremonies said, “As students, we should never forget the people who put in their time, talent, and treasure to get us to where we are. We should never forget to be grateful to the people who patiently guide us, encourage us, correct us, mould us, and turn us into men and women ready to face the challenges of the future.” This is so true. We should not forget how BBS has grown, sprouted and spread to 8 branches without saying thank you to all involved in its continuous excellent existence.

I can say that I am lucky to be part of another great achievement of BBS – the 15th Anniversary Concert!

Earth Day 2016Earth Day is celebrated every 22nd of April. This was first organised in 1970 by the United Nations to promote ecology and respect for life on Earth as well as to encourage awareness of the growing problems of air, water and soil pollution.

This year’s theme, Trees for the Earth, focusses on planting trees as our planet Earth is currently losing over 15 million trees each year due to deforestation, land development and bad forest management.

Bina Bangsa celebrated Earth Day by conducting different projects and activities. These projects were made prior to the actual celebration day. The objectives were to build awareness on how to fight climate change and pollution and to create a clean and green environment.

Students from Primary 1 to 6 were asked to bring empty bottles of soda or water to be used as pots for hanging plants.

Colouring Competition was conducted among the Primary 1 to 3 students and a Poster and Slogan Competition were conducted among the Primary 4 to 6 students.

A fashion show using recycled materials as outfits was also held on 22 April as the culminating event for the Earth Day Celebration. Students cheered for their friends as the contestants walked on stage. Judges had a hard time choosing the Top 3 for this event. Catherine of P5 Faith garnered Third place, Olivia of P6 Faith garnered Second place and Stella of P3 Faith garnered the First place, respectively.

Earth Day Celebrations ended with a hope to achieve a clean and green environment not just in school but also in their homes as well.

Caricature Art and Face Painting.

The teachers of Bina Bangsa had been hard at work for weeks prior, planning and preparing the game booths for the families to enjoy. Children jumped on the Bouncing Castle, played with Water Balloons and screamed at the Haunted House. They fed the Joker, tossed the Ring of Fire, defeated Villains and won lots of fun prizes.

We are so grateful to every family member who attended the event and helped us raise money for our “Save A Little… Build A Real House” initiative. Thanks to your generous contributions. We will soon embark on our annual effort to build houses for those less fortunate, in our community.

We hope you enjoyed Family Day 2016 as much as we did!

May the BBS Force be With You!

On Saturday the 30th of April 2016, the students, families and teachers of Bina Bangsa Kebon Jeruk Preschool and Primary School gathered for our annual ‘Family Day’ celebration. The theme for this year’s family day was Comicon and it was so lovely to see so many students and parents and family members dressed up as their favourite characters.

We started the morning with a few words of appreciation and the official opening from Ms Vasue and then were treated to the exciting Cosplay Competition Fashion Show. We had students from Preschool to Primary 6 walk the runway and show off their creative costumes. We also had some parent and student combinations and a few teachers as well.

The array of food stalls was such a success. From Potato Twist and Jeju Ice Cream to Nasi Bakar and Chinese Dumplings, we were spoilt for choice. The bazaar stalls offered us so much to do and purchase as well, such as

P2 Fieldtrip Godong Ijo, Sawangan Depok

We left BBS at exactly 7.30 a.m. It was a drizzly morning. The teachers were worried that it might rain hard but that did not stop the excitement of both teachers and pupils. We arrived at Godong Ijo 10 minutes before our expected time. When we reached the place, we were warmly welcomed. The organisers assigned tables where the students could put their belongings. The first thing that caught their attention was the pond. It was teeming with different kinds of fish and students were in awe at the giant fish in it!The pupils watched videos about global warming. Then they played with four mascots. After that, they were grouped per class and followed their designated tour guides.

It was a wonderful sight to see the kids playing Indonesia’s traditional games! They were able to figure out how to play the games as a team. They had a great time, even though only simple materials were used for the games. They also had fun feeding an ostrich, big and small turtles, watering different kinds of plants and catching small fish. The activity they enjoyed the most was at the reptile corner. They were given opportunities to touch and even play with the reptiles. The kids showed bravery, especially when some of them held snakes, frogs, geckoes and the like. Most of them fearlessly put the snakes on their shoulders. We finished at around 1.30 p.m. and arrived back at BBS at 3.00 p.m. We all had such a great time!

Fire Station Preschool FieldtripThe Preschool Department had their field trip last 20 and 21 April 2016. Since the children were talking about the places around the community in class, it was timely that they went to the fire station in Puri Kembangan.

Upon arriving, the children were greeted by enthusiastic volunteer firefighters. They visited the viewing room for a short video presentation about fire safety and precautions. Next, the firefighters showed some of the equipment used in firefighting. After that, the children went to the garage area of the fire station. They had the opportunity to put out simulated fires using the actual hose that firefighters use. The children enjoyed watching as the water splashed onto the fire until it was extinguished. Lastly, the children had a chance to ride on a fire truck. Some children sat in the truck while the braver ones rode on top of the truck.

The children enjoyed a short stroll around Puri Kembangan before they returned to school.

Learning is not only limited to what happens inside the classroom. It is equally important for students to have fun and join educational experiences outside the school especially if it is done with friends and classmates. The Primary 3 field trip at Camp Pringayu, Bogor, which took place on the 15th of April 2016, was a fun-filled learning experience. This will definitely become a part of their primary school memories. The students were excited as they started their activities. The challenges they tackled taught them how to work as a team and be confident and responsible for every action completed. They enjoyed each activity assigned to them, especially the balloon relay.

They had to pass a balloon, with water inside, to each member of the team without popping it. The passing had to be done in a zigzag pattern until it reached the last member. He or she had to then put the balloon inside a bucket at the end of the line. They were able to reflect on success every time they beat and passed the challenges. The students were able to appreciate being at a place surrounded by various kinds of plants and animals. It was like they were in charge of the Earth as a whole.

Stables and Country Club’ in Depok for

Primary 5 students last 15 April 2016. The

weather seemed to be a blessing that day

as the students enjoyed walking around

in the stable, not feeling hot or sweaty.

They enjoyed the lecture on ‘Grooming

and Caring for Horses.’. Their favourite

aspect of this trip was a horse-ride,

after they had enjoyed the drawing and

colouring session, decorating horse-shoe

and feeding the horses.

This trip was very educational, like all

our other trips but it was something new

that the students were interested in and

enjoyed thoroughly.

After making our way to a chocolate shop and Chinatown, we were on our way to the Singapore Science Centre. We were filled with awe as we were exposed to a rich collection of ideas and concepts of modern as well as ancient scientific themes. It was truly food for thought for our primary six pupils.

The day ended with a scrumptious meal at Qian Xi Restaurant at Farrer Park. Although Day Two was hectic, our high-spirited pupils never displayed even an iota of lethargy. Not only was the NEWater Plant a stark reminder of the 3 Rs: Recycle, Reduce and Reuse. It also influenced

4.30 a.m.! All of us gathered at Terminal Two, Soekarno Hatta Airport on Friday, 15th April. After bidding farewell to all the parents, we boarded the plane with mirth filled on all our faces. At Changi Airport, we were greeted by our guide, Miss Serene. At once, our Day One tour began.

a 35-metre waterfall provided visitors with refreshing cool air. After resting for a while at the Marina Barrage, it was time for yet another gastronomic treat, this time at Orchard Central. On the third day, after checking out of the hotel, it was time to visit the ArtScience Museum, where Art and Science intermingled to form a myriad of 21 galleries. The many interactive and fun activities were

just too difficult to resistfor most of us.

The final stop was at Bugis street where the pupils did their shopping. Most of them managed to get souvenirs for their friends and family, after which we headed to the airport. There were indeed lots of things to share as soon as we had landed in Jakarta…

A multitude of colours greeted our eyes at the Flower Dome especially at the latest Tulip Garden exhibit. Our pupils were exhilarated as they made their way down the “Cloud Mountain” at the Cloud Forest Dome. We descended the mountain via a circular path where

The Primary 1 pupils had one of their best moments together as a class at Pinisi Edutainment Park located at Kabayoran, Jakarta last 4 April 2016.

The indoor playground was a welcome break to the routine for both students and teachers. It was like a mobile classroom, instructing students to be together and experiencing the different activities. The giant slide, wall climbing, train ride, trishaw and art and craft were all entertaining. Others had their first flying fox experience and it was quite a challenging process as they had to go through several challenging routes but it went great.

It was worth the sweat to be part of the students’ experience to spend time, learn about each other and have fun as one!

Bina Bangsa Primary four students went to Jungle Land Sentul City for the field trip on Friday the 15th of April. We arrived at Jungle Land shortly after 9am on that cloudy Friday morning and headed straight for the Science Centre to watch a presentation by the Jungle Land performers. Some of us were even lucky enough to be a part of the fun and learn about the wonders of science. The students were very excited to see and make Bubble Snakes and Fire Tornadoes.

We saw some very realistic models of dinosaurs on our way to the Science Centre that had students excited and a little scared at the same time. After this, we split up into our small groups and set off in search of some adventure. Between us, we got a chance to ride the Harvest Time roller coaster, tour the Haunted House, take a spin on the Hydrolift and enjoy the amazing view from the Ferris Wheel.

It was truly devastating when it started raining and all the rides began to close for prayer time but we took cover and had our lunch while waiting with bated breath for the rain to subside. Once it did, we set off, once again to enjoy our last hour at Jungle Land. We got some snacks and drinks. We bought some toys and souvenirs and we took one last turn, getting each other drenched on the Boat Blaster.

At 2pm, sadly, it was time to change into some dry clothes and head back towards the bus. We were delayed because of the rain and traffic but finally made it back to school at 4pm, tired from all the fun we enjoyed through the day.

P1-P2 SLC 2016 By Miss CathyBina Bangsa School aims to provide pupils with opportunities to “show off” the skills that they have learnt in their classrooms. The Student-Led Conference (SLC) for Primary 1 and 2 pupils held on 5 March 2016 is one of such opportunities. The Primary 1 and 2 pupils took the lead on sharing examples of their work and displayed their abilities in front of their parents through four various stations per level.

In English, the pupils had reading, spelling and writing activities. In Maths, they had board and floor games to show off their counting skills. In Chinese, they had a sentence construction activity to show off their reading skills. In Science, they exercised their process skills through fun activities.

The Student-Led Conference showcased the pupils’ abilities that gave insight into what is important to the pupils at school. It was a wonderful event, not only the pupils, but the parents enjoyed as well as they played their parts in various activities.

During the SLC, our preschoolers demonstrated what they could do and how far they had progressed in English, Mathematics, Science and Chinese. Together, each family visited the four learning stations in the classroom. Families moved from station to station as they completed each task. Students completed the assigned tasks with their parents with pride and confidence. Parents were impressed with their children’s sense of independence. Overall, the Preschool SLC was a success through everyone’s participation and co-operation. To our Preschoolers, we are proud of you! To all our parents, our sincerest gratitude for the continued support and co-operation! To Preschool Teachers, hats off for a job well done!

Saturday, 5th of March 2016 was a busy and exciting day for everyone in BBS-KJ Preschool. Classrooms were arranged into different learning stations with a variety of learning materials appropriate for the Student-Led Conference (SLC) event.

The SLC is an annual event where students perform and showcase their skills in different learning areas to their parents. This was a great opportunity for the students to show-off and to take pride on what they had achieved in school. Students took ownership of their learning experience in school. SLC has become a breakthrough in communicating student’s academic achievement required of all students.

In the early morning of March 24, everyone was very excited as it was the last day of school for Term 3. Vacation plans had been made and the school was noisy with chatter about the much-needed rest after 11 weeks of school. Suddenly, one of the Primary 4 students came and shouted “Sports Day, I am ready.” Yes, everyone was ready, the courtyard was set, a stage was raised and everyone was eager and anxious for what the day would bring.

The children were at their respective headquarters, with their Head Masters and Mistresses getting ready for the much awaited Cheer-Dance Competition. As the bell rang at 8 o’clock, teams paraded proudly, cheering for their house teams and chanting yells as they

BBS-KJ Primary, celebrated a fun-filled Teachers’ Day on 4th of February 2016.

On Teachers’ Day, students paid their respect heartily to their teachers. It was a day to honour the BBS teachers for their utmost contributions to the school.

Teachers’ Day is an auspicious occasion where students show gratitude to their teachers for their selfless effort in teaching minds, touching hearts and transforming lives.

Each and every teacher teaches the students with sincerity and love. Teachers arouse the hearts of students and light it up with knowledge and help remove all sorts of ignorance and regret.

Students, we, the teachers of BBS-KJ, felt your sincerity by showing us your gratitude and appreciation through the special numbers you rendered.
