Backing up Oracle databases

The Oracle plugin is designed to simplify the backup and restore procedures of your Oracledatabase instance(s). Oracle Database Administrators can take advantage of the option touse RMAN commands in order to make backing up Oracle databases even easier and moreconvenient. Besides ease and speed, the Oracle Plugin provides important features includingrestoring your database(s) to any point in time or being able to filter objects during backupor restore; all of them being available using two different backup techniques: “Dump” andPoint In Time Recovery (PITR) through its tight integration with Oracle Recovery Manager(RMAN).The plugin also implements the RMAN API sbt that eliminates the need to write files tolocal disks first. In both “Dump” and RMAN modes, the plugin will back up all essentialinformation, which is an Oracle DBA best practice. It is quite common to combine both“Dump” and RMAN PITR techniques to back up the same cluster.

Improving incremental and differential backup

The Bacula Systems Oracle plugin uses many of the features of RMAN, including its changetracking feature to improve backup performance by recording changed blocks in each datafile in a change tracking file. If the change tracking feature is enabled, RMAN uses thechange tracking file to identify changed blocks for incremental backup, thus avoiding theneed to scan every block in the data file.

The VSS plugin is one of two ways to back up and restore MS SQL databases with BaculaSystems (see ’Advanced Backup MS SQL databases’ on next page). The VSS plugin isdesigned to back up several Windows specific components, particularly MS SQL databases.Backing up MS SQL database(s) with Bacula Enterprise VSS plugin is as especially easy andquick to use.
