Participants should be from ICAR Institutes/State AUs/CAU/ Agricultural faculty of AMU, BHU,Vishwa Bharti and Nagaland University in the cadre of Assistant Professors or equivalent and above. Course Contents The course is designed in such a way that all the modern aspects of organic farming from production to consumption including management, certification, trade, traceability are covered. The major areas on which the summer school lectures and practical’s will concentrate is given below Theme Major area to be covered General History of Agriculture & organic farming Perils of chemical farming Forms of organic agriculture Scientific organic farming: Concepts and principles Basic Plant breeding strategies for organic farming Physiological process of plants under organic management Bio-chemical and molecular characterization process of indigenous organic manures Nutrient mineralization, matching supply-demand of nutrients from organic manures for soil health & quality Methodology for identification of niche areas and crops Integrated Organic Farming Systems: Concepts Production & quality Organic and Towards organic approaches for organic agriculture Varietal response under organic farming Modern agronomic tools for organic crop production Modern techniques of waste recycling System based nutrient management under organic production system Advances in weed, insect, disease and nematode management under organic farming Organic livestock and Aquaculture production Quality of produces under organic vs inorganic Success stories of organic growers Environment Strategies for mitigation of climate change through organic farming Estimation of Green House Gases emission from organic farming Certification, marketing and Trade National and International standards for organic certification Third party certification Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) certification Government schemes to promote organic farming in India Product packaging and marketing Consumer preferences on organic products Gender issues in organic agriculture Inorganic Organic 14 th July to 03 rd August 2017 Background Deteriorating soil health due to imbalanced application of nutrients, indiscriminate use of synthetics in crop production especially for pest and disease management, increasing frequency of failure of crops due to weather vagaries, reducing net income due to market driven inputs, increasing awareness among consumers especially on healthy and residue free products have heightened the demand for promotion of organic agriculture in India. The efforts on promotion of organic farming in the form of National Programme on Organic Production in 2003-04 resulted in increasing the area from 42,000 ha to 4.89 m ha under organic certification process during 2014-15. Out of this cultivated area accounts for 1.18 m ha (24.1 %) while remaining 3.71 m ha (75.9 %) is wild forest harvest collection area. Currently, India ranks 10 th among the top ten countries having the cultivable land under organic certification. India is having largest producers (6.50 lakhs) engaged in various forms of organic agriculture. Sikkim state has been declared as organic state from January 2016. Though wider scope for organic agriculture exists in the country, the approach of organic farming needs to be applied carefully as India needs to feed quality food to the teaming billions. Although several issues exist for organic growers, practically there are three major issues which constraints the productivity of crops under organic farming compared to conventional farming. These issues are supply of sufficient nutrient through organic inputs, pest and disease management under organic production system. The major questions on organic farming related to production are how to meet the nutrient requirement of crops through organic manures and where it is available? and is it possible to manage the pests and diseases without using synthetics?. These questions need to be answered scientifically with modern concepts. Knowledge on the developments in the field of certification such as third party and Participatory Guarantee system of certification also needs to be updated to the researchers/educational faculties for advancement of organic production system in the country. In this background, a summer school on “Modern Concepts and Practices of Organic Farming for safe, secured and sustainable food production” is being organized to update the modern concepts in the field to benefit the researchers, educationists etc.

The institute has documented the on-farm nutrient response of crops and cropping systems for 96 districts of the country besides working out the nutrient application gaps by farmers for major and micro nutrients. Basic and Strategic research has been conducted through NPOF and as a result organic POP’s for 42 cropping systems suitable for 12 states have bee developed. The institute also played a vital role in formulating policy for promotion of organic farming in India.
