Meet the 2020 Badger Region/Frisco Mo scholarship recipients

John Nelson of the Badger Region has been awarded the Junior Outstanding Cli-nician award from USA Volleyball.

The award ceremony was scheduled to be May 20 in Minneapolis, Minn., at the Doro-thy C. Boyce Banquet but was canceled due to the current climate.

John is extremely deserving of this national recognition and we thank him for his service both on and off the court. "

ible body of knowledge to the gym everyday. John’s love and dedication for volleyball is only exceeded by his love dedication to his players.

Nominator: Dann Jacobson~

Nominee: John ReinBadger Region Volleyball my most influ-

ential coach is John Rein because in the little time I have been in the Vhawk Club he has not only has helped me grown physically but also mentally in the game of volleyball. Including teaching me different aspects of life and many valuable lessons. He has always believed in me and pushed me to my limits knowing I can do anything I put my head to. What makes him special is that he is always there for his athletes on and off the court being with them every step of the way. He is also a hero in the vball community for always giving his athletes his full attention and working with them until they can do the drill or specialty over and over again without mistakes

Nominator: Mandy Duellman

~Nominee: James Haferman

My JV volleyball coach in high school. James Haferman. He pushed us to be better, he was hard on us, but made us dig deep. My senior year, I was the starting setter, he helped me with the mind control part, being the leader, and taking one for the team. It worked, 1988 State VB Champs!!

Nominator: Carol Geidel

~Nominee: Jim Plaisted

Jim Plaisted is the best coach someone could ask for. After starting the club (MVC) a lifetime ago, he came back to spread his knowledge to his team. He took the time to acknowledge each player’s individual game and knew how to use it. He took a group of average players and made us a great team.

Nominator: Luke Minard

~Nominee: Faith Hart

Coach Faith Hart of the Eclipse Volleyball Club out of Hartford WI. My name is Emily Braun and I cannot pass up any opportunity to brag about my coach, coach Faith, my mentor, my #1 fan, my advocate, my voice of reason and encouragement. This holds true on and off the court! Coach Faith is 110% dedicated to "team" and family..sticking together and supporting one another no matter what! Wins and losses

do not matter. Coach has taught me that if I can look back on a competition and know I put forth all of my effort...I AM A WINNER! I would chose Coach Faith over any D1 highly acclaimed coach or life supporter...she is TRU-LY one of a kind!

Nominator: Emily Braun

~Nominee: JJ Eaton and

Tim MatelskiAs a parent, I have experienced many dif-

ferent coaches and styles. By far our favorite coaching experience was Coach JJ Eaton and Coach Tim Matelski at the former Fox Valley Thunder Club during her 14s season. They were so instrumental in my daughters development as a setter! They knew how to make each teammate feel important and understand their roles. They took 10 girls and bonded them for life! Many of them still chat on Snapchat. The season was successful and the most memorable season for us as parents! Boom! That was Coach JJ’s catch phrase! It will forever be ours too. Thank you to both of them for an amazing experience. Coach Tim still coaches, at Impact Volleyball Club now as a 17s Coach! Hope to play for him again when she is a 17!!

Nominator: Jennifer Duane Moore~

Nominee: Kaily ErdmanKaily Erdman has been my coach now for

two years and is absolutely amazing. She has helped me become a better player and person all around. She gets very competitive and into the game just as much as the whole team. She is a phenomenal coach. She has also gone out of her way to make the BEST possible relationships with every single girl on our team no matter if they are the loudest or the quietest. She does anything in her power to make each one of my teammates a better person and volleyball player.

Nominator: Addie Andersonn

~Nominee: Tiffany ClarkThe most influential mentor for me in

volleyball is Tiffany Clark. She is always there if I need advice or a friend. She has helped me become more confident in myself and my playing ability. She has helped me become a better player and I don’t know what I’d do without her!I met her at volleyball camp when she approached me at an off-court session with a hug. We had 10 minutes to get to know someone and she came up to me and asked to be my partner. She inspires me every single day with the way she plays, her attitude and her willingness to help other people and the planet. I can’t imagine what I’d be like

without her guidance and support!Nominator: Alexandra (alexandrathelibero)

~Nominee: Al Rogers

Al Rogers was a huge influence in my volleyball career. Al was the coach of the first USAV, really USVBA because it was that long ago, men's team that I played on. Al was a good coach. He was good at teaching skills as well as good with the team on the court. Later when I coached a team I always tried to think of how would Al do it.

Al was also a National referee. He is the one that got me started as an official. I got to work a few matches with him and learned many things while we drove to the match. I got to watch him do a match between the USA men and The Netherlands team. He also played a big part in me getting to call lines in a women's match between USA and Japan when I was a young official.

Nominator: John Nelson

~Nominee: Michel DelisleMy most influential coach has got to be

Michel Delisle (RVA-Boys Navy 18’s) She is so much more than just a coach. She is a friend and a mentor for every player she coaches. She goes above and beyond teaching skills on the court and off. If there’s a certain position you want on the court and you are willing to work for it she will do whatever she can to make that happen. If there’s a college that you want to attend she will help you contact the coaches, send referrals and attend your signing. Outside of the gym she is just as amazing, the life that she has lead and her many accomplishments really make you want to be a better person. With everyone she helps and all she does I’m not sure she even sleeps most nights. But that is just the type of person she is and that is why she definitely is “The Best Coach.”

Nominator: Jordan Krause

~ Nominee: Alan Capps

My name is Leah Ciriacks and I play for Coach Alan Capps with the u13 eclipse solar volleyball team out of Hartford. I have been playing volleyball since second grade where I played at the YMCA and my parents coached me. I then started to play for other leagues/clubs. This last year was my first year playing with Eclipse and it was amazing. Coach Capps is a wonderful coach. He is so supportive but he challenges us. My skills and confidence have definitely grown so much this year. Even with the pandemic, he works so hard to keep us involved as a team. He is the best.

Nominator: Leah Ciriacks

Madeline Davis-Troller (Wisconsin Performance)* Hometown: Cottage Grove* High School: Monona Grove* College: Wesleyan University* Previous Clubs: North Star* Quote: “Mady is the con-

summate teammate and makes everyone around her perform to their potential. That is the beauty of Mady as a player; she doesn’t just perform as an individual, but creates an atmosphere in which everyone on her team wants to be the best possible version of themselves. I can’t describe leadership better than that.”

Elizabeth Fortune (Balance)* Hometown: McFarland* High School: McFarland* College: UW-Madison* Previous Clubs: Capital VBA* Quote: “Lizzy always

showed up ready to play in practice, and even though she is not going on to play college volleyball, she never took a day off. This was a true test of her character. She was willing to step into whatever role I needed her in practice with just a smile and a willingness to work.”

Madeline Hoch (Midwest Penguins)* Hometown: Franklin* High School: St. Thomas More* College: University of Alabama* Previous Clubs: Southwest* Quote: “I have watched Maddie transform

herself into a confident individual, a team leader, and a role model. She is very positive and always wears a smile. It was always refreshing to see Maddie carry herself in a Christian-like manner, often with a kind word for a teammate, or a comment that makes someone see the "glass is half full" in situations.

Renee Michaels (South Shore Slam)* Hometown: Sheboygan* High School: Sheboygan

South* College: UW-Madison* Previous Clubs: Wiscon-

sin Volleyball Academy* Quote: “Not only is Renee a

BoysJoshua Hoening (Southport VBC)

* Hometown: Kenosha* High School: Kenosha

Bradford* College: St. Norbert College* Previous Clubs: Epic VBC* Quote: “Joshua leads by ex-

ample. He is the poster-child for taking responsibility for himself and his teammates. His effort level on the court leaves nothing to question. And off the court he goes above and beyond to assist others in whatever way he can.”

Colin Kenney (MVC)* Hometown: Shorewood* High School: Shorewood* College: Lakeland University* Previous Clubs: NA* Quote: “It is clear that Colin

is a high-character young man. It was no surprise to me when I learned how involved Colin is with coaching younger kids in the Shorewood High School program. He also uses his time to help with the middle school levels in the Shorewood district. I’m sure his positive and competitive attitude is a huge draw for the kids he interacts with.”

Ethan Moll Hind (Madison Elite)* Hometown: Madison* High School: Madison

Memorial* College: Edgewood College* Previous Clubs: Capital * Quote: “Ethan is a leader in

many ways. He leads through his ability to shoulder the major-ity of the passing and hitting load, and also is supportive of his teammates. They rely on him heavily to steady the group when things are going bad on the court”

Avery Pohlman (MVC)* Hometown: Appleton* High School: Appleton North * College: Maryville University* Previous Clubs: Wisconsin

Volleyball Academy Nightmares* Quote: “Avery approaches

volleyball with an extreme-ly pragmatic outlook to the amount of work it takes to grow his game. On top of what Avery has been able to change his body into; he is one of the most mentally tough athletes I’ve been privileged to be around.”

Jackson Van Engen (MVC)* Hometown: Hubertus* High School: Germantown* College: Illinois Institute of

* Quote: “Lauren has been dedicated to Rock VBC for seven years as a player and now contin-ues to coach their 12s team – something she has done for the past three years. This willingness to give back to the sport before she is even done playing herself speaks to her character.”

USA Volleyball has an-nounced that Louisville, Kentucky, will host the 2021 USA Volleyball Open National Championship. The 2021 USA Volleyball Open

National Championship will be held May 28 to June 2 at the Ken-tucky Exposition Center. Louisville last hosted the USA Volleyball Open National Championship in 2013.“We are excited to bring back

the Open National Championship

to Louisville in 2021,” USA Volley-ball Director of Events Kristy Cox said. “Louisville was an excel-lent host city for the 2013 Open Nationals. Louisville has an oasis

of activities and sites to visit, and the Kentucky Exposition Center will help provide many lasting memories on the courts.”The Open Nationals, formed

in 1928, will be in its 91st edition in Louisville. The event has been held annually except for two years during World War II and this year’s event due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Open Nationals typically draws in excess of 500 teams with 6,000-plus players

converging on the host city. Players range in age from 18 to 80-plus with the oldest age division being the Men’s 78-and-Over bracket.“Louisville has a large volleyball

fan base and an affinity for cham-pionship-level volleyball," Louis-ville Sports Commission (LSC) President and CEO Karl F. Schmitt Jr. said. "And our local hospitality industry is ready to roll out the red carpet for all the adult athletes, family members and fans.”

USA Volleyball announced two junior nation-al championships sites last week.

Columbus will host the 2021 USA Volley-ball Girls 18s Junior National Championship (GJNC18) from April 23-25 at the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Kansas City will host the 2021 USA Volleyball Boys Junior National Championship (BJNC) from June 30 to July 7 at the Kansas City Convention Center.

Columbus: GJNC 18sThe GJNC18 is expected to draw approximate-

ly 300 teams, nearly 3,000 players and over 5,000 family and friends of the players from across the country.

Columbus has hosted four USA Volleyball Na-tional Championship events since 2012. The city was the host site for the 2015 and 2017 BJNC as well as the 2012 USA Volleyball Girls Junior National Championship. Columbus hosted the Opens on four previous occasions (1930, 1952, 2000 and 2019).

Kansas City: BJNCsThe 42nd annual BJNC is likely to have nearly

550 teams and 6,000 athletes playing in Kan-sas City in 2021. Kansas City has hosted three previous USA Volleyball National Champion-ship events. Kansas City was the site for the 1991 USA Volleyball Open National Championship, along with hosting both the Girls and Boys Junior National Championships in 1993. Further, Kansas City has hosted three National Collegiate Volleyball Federation National Championships in conjunction with USA Volleyball in 2012, 2015 and 2017.

A new movie being released June 4, "Match Point: The Rise of Boys and Men’s Volleyball," follows U.S. Men’s Volleyball National Team Head Coach John Speraw, collegiate coach Nickie Sanlin (McKendree University) and youth club director Ed Wrather (Vortex Volleyball Club) on a journey through the state of men’s volleyball across the country.

Along with several others, they dis-cuss the opportunities men’s volleyball is presenting to the youth of America, the problems that the sport is facing and the goals of the Olympic quali-fying U.S. Men’s National Team. The opportunities and problems within diverse and under-served communities in America is a highlighted point of interest within the film.

"Match Point" is also an organized, transmedia effort to bring awareness to the sport of boys and men’s volleyball in the United States. The “Match Point” campaign features a website, blog, social media presence, podcast and gaming app. These channels of commu-nication give people access to the sport of boys and men’s volleyball like never before.

The documentary was directed and filmed by students in the Departments of Journalism and Telecommunications at Ball State University. The transme-

dia campaign is being organized and implemented by graduate students from the Center for Emerging Media Design & Development at Ball State University. Executive producers are Dr. Adam Kuban and Dr. Jennifer Palilonis. These projects were also developed in collaboration with First Point Volleyball Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to creating opportunities for young men to develop as players and people by advancing and supporting boys and men’s volleyball across the nation.

The official premiere is scheduled for a LIVE, interactive Facebook Premiere Watch Party next Thursday June 4th and the full documentary will be avail-able on our site to watch.

The official trailer was released last week on social media and is also available to view on the USA Volleyball website. Check it out: https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Volleyball/Features/Match-Point

A few weeks ago, the Badger Region announced it was not sending any teams to Pittsburgh for the High Performance Championships. Then, a few weeks later, USA Volleyball announced HP Championships were canceled all together. Now, today, Badger Region

is announcing that we are accepting applications for a one-day Badger Region High Performance Camp that will take place this summer:* Boys Youth born in 2003

and 2004 will participate on July 13 at Lakeland University.* Boys Select born in 2005-

2007 will participate on July 14 at Lakeland University.* Girls Youth born in 2004

and 2005 will participate on Aug. 3 at UW-Whitewater.* Girls Select born in 2006-

2008 will participate on Aug. 4 at UW-Whitewater.To participate, everyone must

fill out the form located here: http://badgervolleyball.org/high-performance-video-try-outs/. This includes sharing a link to some sort of video that highlight’s the athlete’s skill that would showcase why they

should be considered for the Badger Region High Perfor-mance program. Videos should not exceed five minutes. All athletes who share a link with the Badger Region HP program will receive some sort of written feedback from the coaching staff based on the video they submit. The cost of submitting an application is $10, plus a $2 credit card service fee. This fee is non-refundable.The deadline for registration

is June 19. If an athlete is cho-sen for the one-day elite camp, they will be alerted the fol-lowing week, and the cost will be $90. The all-day camp will have roughly three sessions: 9 to 11 a.m., noon to 2 p.m. and 3 to 5 p.m. The Badger Region will have a lot of precautions in place for the day of activity that meet current USAV regulations and CDC recommendations. Athletes will be required to have their temperatures scanned, have their own water bottles and bring their own food and snacks for the full day of train-ing. We’ll make sure to have lots of hand sanitizer and disinfec-tants on hand as well.

More information on this will be shared as we get closer to the event. If you do not have a video link, a letter of recom-mendation from a coach or club director will be required. Those without video links still must pay the registration/tryout fee.If Lakeland University or the

University of Wisconsin-White-water require us to postpone or cancel these one-day camps, we will let you know as soon as we know. Our goal is to build a camp-like experience that would have been reflective of the teams we would have taken to Pittsburgh this summer. That means we are truly limiting the number of athletes chosen (and that will help us ensure we can follow social distancing practices, too). We look forward to getting back in the gym this summer and working with these elite athletes who will be eligible for the exact same teams next year.On behalf of our elite cadre

of coaches helping us again this summer, thank you in advance, and let us know if you have any questions. ([email protected])

Have questions? Email the Badger Region office at [email protected].

The Badger Region Volleyball Association wants to make sure that your jerseys are compliant with all rule sets and changes that have gone into effect that last few years.

To do so, the Region’s Ref Chair (Jim Arts) is encourage club directors to upload images to this link (below) if there is any concern that numbers are not contrasting enough with the dominant color of the jersey or if a jersey is not contrasting for libero purposes.

UPLOAD HERE: http://badgervolleyball.org/jerseys/

The goal of this initiative is to help our Ref Chair not have to write any waivers for jerseys, especially for teams who are competing at national qualifier and national champi-onship events.

May 27 featured official: Franco MarcosBackground: Franco Marcos, a resident of Middleton, Wis., is a

Junior National official who was born on the island of Barbados. He has played cricket, baseball and volleyball at very high levels.

Quotes: “Why did I become an official? As a coach, player and club director, I want to see the game from a different angle. I want to continue to learn, to teach, to help others and most importantly to become a better team player — which is needed not only in sports but also in every day life."

"I want to work on being consistent and also making firm decisions while maintaining a level of professionalism that is needed."

Fun facts: Franco owns about 500 ties. He also enjoys riding his bike, sometimes as much as 40 miles on weekends.

June 3 featured official: Jerry Schewe

How long have you been reffing: The Platteville resident said, "My officiating career began about 25 years ago when an athletic director asked me to officiate a basketball game for the Badger State

Games. At first I thought it would be easy, but I quickly learned that wasn't the case."

Quotes: "My officiating partner and I de-cided to give volleyball a try in 2004. We knew almost nothing about the game but we were willing to learn.""Even thought volleyball is my newest sport,

it is definitely the sport that I enjoy officiating the most. It is fast-paced, it requires lots of ath-leticism by the players, and it requires constant focus from the official."

"Most officials are willing to help others improve their craft, and I found this to be very true of other volleyball officials."

FROM THE REGION A pair of Badger Region beach events have

been canceled for the summer of 2020.The first canceled event is the June 18 boys

beach clinic that was slated for Bradford Beach in downtown Milwaukee. Not only are social distancing and COVID-19 still a

concern, the condition of the beach will not be ready by the date that was scheduled.

The second canceled event was the Badger Region Beach Qualifier that was scheduled for mid-July at North Beach in Racine. That event was canceled due to the fact that Racine is not allowing gatherings of 50 or more people until after July 31.

The Region will still plan to offer its free girls beach clinics in Milwaukee at the end of July and the Badger Region Beach Champi-onships in August.

FROM USA VOLLEYBALL

SAFESPORT

FROM THE AVCA(From a news article posted May 29)USA Volleyball held its first virtual board meeting on May 21 with

all 17 board members able to participate remotely. The Board held a thorough discussion on the impact COVID19

has had on the organization, the staff, the 40 Region Volleyball Associ-ations, international athletes in all disciplines as well as the individual members of USA Volleyball.A draft of the 2021-24 USA Volleyball strategic plan was introduced

to the Board members. A group of staff and board members will review it closely in the next few weeks with a final plan ready for the September board meeting. In other actions during the board meeting,

three director election results were announced. Tri Bourne has been elected to the USA Volley-ball Board of Directors as its male beach athlete

representative effective July 1, while Steve Bishop and Donna Donaghy have been reelected to the Board representing beach development and the Regional Volleyball Association Assembly, respectively. All three will serve through June 30, 2024.“A special thanks to Todd Rogers for

his eight years of service on the board of directors,” USA Volleyball Board Chair Cecile Reynaud following Rogers’ final board meeting. “He did an excellent job of representing the male beach players. We are looking forward to having Tri Bourne join us at our next meeting this fall."

The U.S. Center for SafeSport has made revisions to the SafeSport Code. Over the course of the next few Badger Beacons, we will highlight some of the changes and the reasons behind them.

The 2020 SafeSport Code went into effect on April 1, 2020.Topic: Currently, the procedural mechanism for “Requesting a

Stay” only applies “prior to a hearing,” when it is applicable more broadly.

Change: On Pg. 26, added language - “At any time, the Center—on its own or at the request of a Respondent— may stay a sanction(s). Whether to stay a sanction(s) is within the Center’s sole discretion and is not reviewable.”

Rationale: A “Stay” of sanctions is a procedural mechanism that could be

appropriate in various situations, not just prior to a hearing. For example, the Center may receive a “Request to Reopen” 6 months after a Decision and full arbitration hearing occurred, citing new and compelling evidence that might alter the Center’s additional findings. Under the current provision, the Center would not have the option to stay the sanction in conjunction with granting a Request to Reopen, if that request occurred after a hearing had already occurred. To be clear, a Stay only applies to sanctions after a Notice of Decision; Temporary Measures will always be “modified,” never “stayed.”

AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer writes (May 29):Last December, Fernando Lima, Secretary General of the FIVB,

visited with the AVCA on the marketing of volleyball. The FIVB has made fan engagement a priority in the last four years. Part of the effort was the creation of the Volleyball Nations League (VNL).

The marketing manual lays out a standardized set of cheers, emo-jis, and music celebrating a kill, a stuff block, and a service ace. The chants are in English led by the public address announcer. Initially I thought the idea was corny, but in my first VNL match, I found myself following the lead of the kids in the stands around me. The guidelines also allow for DJ controlled music between points right up to the toss of the ball by the server. The music brought energy to the dead spots between serves.

Lima said not only do we do a poor job of letting our fans cheer big points, but, he said, when something spectacular happens, the players gather in a tight huddle in the middle of the court with their backs to the fans. Unlike other sports where the star plays to the crowd, in volleyball, the hero retreats to the huddle.

There is nothing like a pandemic to upend long-standing habits. In this fall’s ‘new normal,’ players are advised not to touch each other and to forego huddling between points. What will this do to volleyball and what will it do to us? Will giving up the sisterhood and brotherhood aspects that make our sport so attractive to participants help us connect with fans in ways we have not before? Can music fill the void?

PAGE 9 — BADGER BEACON

Here’s a rundown from our site: http://bad-gervolleyball.org/downtime-blog.

May 26: The unofficial start to summer is now in our review mirror. Now that Memo-rial Day is behind us, it’s time to look ahead. For most of Wisconsin, the state is slowly starting to re-open, and that means we are starting to return to our “new normal.”

So as we emerge from our quarantines, it is time to say good night (not good-bye) to the daily Downtime Blog. Don’t worry, it’s not go-ing anywhere. It’s going to find a permanent home on our website and we will add to it when we find out about other great activities to help pass the time.

But as we look forward, it also gives us a chance to reflect on the three months of posts that we have put together here.

12: Number of posts about ways to educate your self — from books to podcasts to mental training

10: Number of posts about keeping up your skills and how to do that at home.

8: Number of posts about hands-on projects or craft-like activities

8: Number of posts about nutrition or physical wellness

7: Number of posts about webinars and online gatherings to help you stay engaged

6: Number of posts about contests or opportu-nities to share your thoughts to win Badger Region prizes

4: Number of holidays we told you to celebrate in your own way (Easter, Earth Day, Memorial Day and Mother’s Day)

4: Number of posts about recruiting and ways to look ahead to playing volleyball in college

4: Number of posts about ways to connect with your teams or teammates during a pandemic.

7: Number of other miscellaneous posts about everything from cool videos to officiating.

We will miss supplying this blog to you on a daily basis, but we know your summer is going to be great — and we’ll be here if you need us in the future. Stay healthy, stay safe.

May 25: Enjoy your Memorial Day!

May 24: Make a time capsule. How will you

remember the global pandemic of 2020? What will historians say about these un-precedented times?

Some of us may want to remember we’re

experiencing and how we’re feeling, so why not take some time to put together your own personal time capsule? It’s a pretty easy task, and when you open it in so many years, you will be grateful you took the time to create such a memory.

The Art of Coaching Volleyball offers these tips to creating your own messages in a bottle:

* Pictures of people you are social distanc-ing with

* All About Me – including age, a list of favorites, friends & what you want to be when you grow up

* How I’m Feeling* My Community* What I Am Doing to Keep Busy* Handprints* Special Occasions Celebrated * Letter to Myself* Interview Your Parents* Letter from Your Parents* Be creative — you can add many other

memory keepsakes to your time capsule!

May 23: Sometimes it might be hard to stay entertained and smiling during a global pandemic. Now, more than ever, it’s import-ant to take care of yourself, your mind and your emotions — all things that will benefit you when you return to volleyball. Here are a few starters:

* Learn to relax and sleep better with these apps

* Consider meditation — there’s no time like the present

* Take an online meditation class (with sheep)

For more “traditional” mental training opportunities, check out these resources from the AVCA Education Timeout webinars that have recently taken place (some are only open to AVCA members)

* The Coaches Compass to Covid-19: How to Engage and Lead the Most Anxious Generation of Athletes So That They Flourish, Not Flounder During This Global Pandemic (Dr. Tim Elmore, Growing Leaders Founder and CEO)

* Current Engagement Strategies to

Enhance Team Culture and Connection (University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Coach-ing Staff)

* Change, Keeping Together & What Now for Coaches (Bo Hanson, Athlete Assess-ments)

* Why Do They Fall Apart? Coaching to Enhance Mental Toughness (Dr. V J Iannone, Sports Psychologist)

You can also look up all the great informa-tion supplied by CAP clinician Dan Mickle, who presented in Wisconsin back in Decem-ber. He is an expert in mental health training for athletes. Check out his website: https://www.danmickle.com/

May 22: Invite guest speakersWhether it’s current college players who

are alums of your club or someone in the game who can share advice or knowl-edge, guest speakers are well received. And you might be surprised who you can get.

Remember, the big-time players and coaches are quarantined just like every-body else, so they have some

extra time.Athletes such Lindsey Berg, Dustin Watten

and Kerry Walsh-Jennings (who appeared on “Top Chef ” last night) are just a few we have seen talking to Badger Region clubs over the past few weeks.

People are super willing to give back right now because they realize what a bummer this is for the kids.

May 21: Make sure to check out the videos (https://www.teamusa.org/USA-Volleyball/About-Us/Hall-of-Fame/HOF-2020) put out by USA Volleyball yesterday celebrating the

USAV Hall of Fame Class of 2020. May 20 should have been the day these fine individuals were inducted (in-person), but due to the circumstanc-

es, it became a digital event. That includes the Badger Region's own John Nelson who received the Outstanding Clinician award. Congrats, John!

May 20: Ruth Nelson (Founder of Bring Your Own Parent and GoKids Youth Sports) offers a prescription for training young kids at home during the COVID-19 timeout. It’s also great for parents to join in the activity and have FUN learning while engaging in a little one-on-one time with their kids!

Latest activities that appeared in the ‘Downtime Blog’From webinars to workouts, what have you missed since the last Badger Beacon?

May 25 was a time to reflect on Memorial Day in the Downtime Blog.

The Badger Region has made coaching education a priority.

In 2018, the Badger Region Board of Di-rectors appointed an Education Chair, BJ Le Roy and formed an Education committee. The goal is to create and promote opportunities for Badger Region coaches to become certified, re-certify, and stay current with best practices in the sport of volleyball and the field of coaching.

Beginning with the 2018-2019 mem-bership season, Badger Region Coaches will need to complete two hours of Badger Region-approved Coaching Continuing Education during the current quad (four-year Olympic cycle) to be eligible to coach in the following quad. Think of a quad as the four years leading up to and culminating with the Summer Olympics.

Annually the Badger Region has approxi-mately 1100 Coaches!

Since Sept 1, 2016 (current quad 2016-2020) approximately 300 coaches have been IMPACT certified.

Approximately 100 coaches achieved CAP I or II certification at the CAP Clinic hosted by Badger Region in December 2017 or De-cember of 2019.

About 100 coaches from various clubs have participated in a Badger Region run 3C- Coaches Coaching Coaches program.

An additional 40 coaches attend or partic-ipate in Badger Region Education Clinics or programs annually.

This leaves around 600 coaches that we believe are in need of continuing education to stay current on best practices, philosophy, and changes to the game and/or rules.

New coaches will become certified by

completing IMPACT (Increased Mastery and Professional Application of Coaching Theory)

There are a number of FREE options for experienced coaches including:

* The Art of Coaching Volleyball “Badger Region Coaches Certification”

* Re-take IMPACT or attend at least two hours of a live IMPACT session

* Attend a Badger Region 3C clinic (re-quested by club director)

Other options for re-certification at the coaches cost include:

* Attending a CAP/BCAP clinic* Completing two CAP modules* Complete your CAP certification* Attend the National HP Clinic* Attend an Art of Coaching Clinic* Attend an AVCA convention* Attend a University/College sponsored

coaching clinic (ex: UW-Madison)* Attend the WVCA spring clinic

Contact the Region office for approval of other education obtained not listed here.

Continuing education a must for all coaches

The Badger Region and the AVCA are again partnering to offer coach-ing education tips to directors, coach-es and any volleyball enthusiasts who want to improve their knowledge of the game and continue to learn.

The Badger Region is once again rewarding the individuals who showcase amazing sports-manship via our Enthusiastic. Supportive. Positive. program.

At tournaments, staff will be handing out wristbands that have the ESP slogan on them to people who go above and beyond to show fellow fans, teammates and coaches how we expect people to behave.

These wristbands are for fans, not players. Let’s take our cheering and our region up a few notches:

* Get a little crazy.* Go the extra mile.* Support your team with posi-

tive cheering.* Recognize the good in your

teams and others.* Applaud when the other team

makes a great play.* We need good opponents to

get better. Be that good opponent. At the Badger Region Cham-

pionships in March, recipients of the wristbands can redeem them for Badger Region swag at the Tournament desk.

How is the Badger Region Board structured? The Badger Region Volleyball Association

is governed by a Board of Directors that must be elected by members on a regular basis. Area reps serve three-year terms, while members of the executive board serve four-year terms.

Members, whether they are players, coaches, parents, directors, athletic trainers or officials, are encouraged to communicate with their respective representative if they

think policies or financial decision in the Region need to be changed.

Some policies enforced by Badger Region come from USA Volleyball, our sport’s national governing body, so those can’t be changed. But many others can.

The Board is advised by a 11 chairpersons (or experts) in various parts of the game, and five staff members (some of which have multiple responsibilities).

The state is divided into five parts geo-graphically for representation. Plus, there are two at-large board members who you can approach if you don’t feel comfortable with your current rep. And there is a rep dedi-cated just to issues that surround our Junior volleyball clubs and athletes.

You’ll be hearing from each Board mem-ber twice a year in the form of a column in the Badger Beacon. Now, let’s meet them:
