Farnham town centre is a focal point for shopping and leisure activities. Its independent shops, restaurants, rich arts scene, calm open spaces and interesting walking trails make it a wonderful place to experience an enjoyable few hours.

Surrounding the town centre are some unique villages with their own distinct identities. Here is a brief snapshot of the villages within the Farnham Town Council catchment area.

Tell us more about where you live by adding forthcoming events to our events calendar and details about your village club, church, business or organisation to our directory of local services at www.farnham.gov.uk.

Villages in brief

Badshot LeaThe village of Badshot Lea boasts a fine church, a large garden centre with a popular café and some quirky shops while Badshot Lea big and small ponds offer some excellent fishing opportunities. Badshot Lea Cemetery won Gold at the South & South East in Bloom 2019.

Tice’s Meadow is nature reserve on the site of a former quarry, and it is considered to be one of the best inland sites to watch birds in the south east of England. Volunteers help and manage the Meadow. Visit www.ticesmeadow.org for details of working parties and more information.

The BourneThe Bourne is a vibrant village with shops and a large village green on which the annual Bourne Show is held. St Thomas-on-the-Bourne is a lively, busy church at the heart of the community and Langhams Rec has a well-used children’s playground. The Bourne Woods are owned by the RSPB and Forestry Commission and have featured in several blockbusters.

The village is well served by community groups, sports clubs and activities for young people.

The Bourne Beautification Project aims to enhance the appearance of the village centre. Volunteers help with watering the hanging baskets and planted tubs and carry out regular litter picks.

Hale and Upper Hale North of the town centre is the area of Hale and Upper Hale. With a successful annual carnival and fayre held on the first Saturday in July on the recreation ground, this green space is a focal point for the village.

There is a scout hut, cemetery, Hale Community Centre, the Hale Institute Village Hall and a

number of churches. Visit St Mark’s to see Emily, the beauty Edwardian pipe organ and murals painted by artist Kitty Milroy who used local people as models.

The Hale History Project holds regular coffee mornings on the last Saturday of the month (with the exception of December) in Hale Village Hall, 10am-12 noon and all are welcome. The Alfred pub holds an annual beer festival. Hale benefits from easy access to Farnham Park and Caesar’s Camp.

Heath EndAs the Army expanded in neighbouring Aldershot, the village of Heath End was formed. Rowhill Nature Reserve makes a natural boundary between the two towns: this ancient site is good for walking and provides a precious haven for wildlife and flora. The area is also home to Farnham Rugby Union Club plus pitches for the Aldershot and Farnham Hockey Club on Monkton Lane.

RowledgeTo the south of Farnham, on the county border of Surrey with Hampshire, the village of Rowledge has a thriving centre made up of a butcher, post office and convenience store, coffee shop, hairdresser, garage and pub. The village green hosts a very popular fayre on the second bank holiday in May.

Rowledge Village Hall hosts a range of regular events including the very popular Friday morning Coffee Spot.

WeybourneLocated to the east of Farnham, Weybourne has a village hall, sub post office, shops, pubs and recreation ground. Weybourne House was once home to John Henry Knight, inventor, engineer and local landowner. He is famous for building the first petroleum carriage for two people made in England in 1895.

WreccleshamOn the southern fringes of Farnham is the village of Wrecclesham. There is a recreation ground which hosts the annual village fair, plus cricket, football, rugby and tennis clubs. Wrecclesham Community Centre is a focal point for local clubs and activities.

Wrecclesham acquired village status in 1840 when its first place of worship was built.

The village of Wrecclesham is best known for its pottery. To this day it is home to one of the best-preserved examples of a working Victorian country pottery left in England.

Farnham Town Council, Waverley Borough Council and Surrey County Council provide services for Farnham’s residents but knowing who to contact is not always obvious.

This brief guide aims to help you navigate who does what.

A-Z of Farnham Services

Farnham Town Council AllotmentsWe manage nine allotment sites in and around Farnham. Activities such as an annual bbq, seed swaps, garden visits and a lecture make the allotments sociable places to be and contribute to the strong sense of community on each of the sites.

Each site has a representative who acts as the link between allotment holders and Farnham Town Council.

Bus shelters We maintain, repair and sometimes replace bus shelters. We work with Waverley Borough Council and Surrey County Council to help make sure their bus shelters are inspected and maintained.

CCTV Farnham town centre has a number of CCTV cameras funded by Farnham Town Council.

Live footage from the cameras can normally be monitored by Surrey Police staff from their control room in Guildford. The cameras help to provide reassurance to visitors and have resulted in the detection and prevention of crime. Footage is normally kept for 30 days.

CemeteriesFarnham Town Council sets a high standard for the management of its cemeteries and in recent years has committed a significant level of resource towards improvements and refurbishment.

We maintain Badshot Lea, Green Lane, Hale and West Street cemeteries and are the local burial authority responsible for burials and maintaining cemetery records. At South & South East in Bloom 2019, Badshot Lea Cemetery won gold in the Small Cemetery category and West Street won Silver Gilt in the Large Cemetery category.

Christmas lightsWe provide Christmas lighting schemes for the town centre and villages. The LED lights are energy-efficient and light up dull days as well as evenings.

Civic events A number of civic events happen throughout the year which are hosted by the Mayor of Farnham. The Mayoral year begins with Mayor-making and is followed by Armed Forces Day, Remembrance Sunday, the Venison Dinner and Civic Christmas Carol Service.

Communication We use a variety of communication channels to inform residents about how to get the most out of living in Farnham and to encourage feedback. Our website includes lots of information about the Town Council, local service providers and what’s happening. We also communicate on social media, via local newspapers and magazines. There are opportunities for face-to-face contact with councillors at our events and the Annual Town Meeting and we communicate directly with residents via newsletters and publications such as this Residents’ Guide.

8 www.farnham.gov.uk

Community events We organise around 50 community events throughout the year.

The events are subsidised by sponsorship and as well as bringing people together, they attract visitors into the town centre and provide an opportunity for local organisations and businesses to raise their profile.

The events programme includes activities for small groups such as the Bloomin’ Kids Gardening Workshops through to events like the Food and Drink Festival and Christmas Market which attract thousands of people.

Council meetings Formal Council meetings are chaired by the Mayor of Farnham and are held around nine times a year to discuss Farnham Town Council business. The public can attend the meetings and ask questions and make statements.

Farmers’ Market The town’s monthly Farmers’ Market is held from 10.30am to 1pm on the fourth Sunday of the month in Central car park.

Around 35-40 producers sell fresh, local and often organic produce direct to the public.

Each month a different local charity hosts the charity tea tent to raise money and awareness about their cause.

Graffiti removal Once a month we employ a specialist contractor to remove graffiti. You can report graffiti using our online report it form or by calling us.

Private businesses are responsible for cleaning off graffiti on their properties although we may be able to help with removal for a small charge.

Grants The community grant initiative is designed to provide funding for youth projects, community buildings, heritage projects, leisure facilities and much more.

Money is available to community organisations for projects that will promote the environment and/or community life in Farnham.

Farnham Town Council is a trustee of the South Street Trust fund and awards around 25 grants each year. Grants are available for Farnham organisations seeking funding for an art-based educational activity. To be eligible for consideration, the project should have a creative input and benefit Farnham people.

Mayor The Mayor is an ambassador for Farnham, promoting and upholding the character of the town, supporting community groups and projects.

Town councillors elect the Town Mayor annually. The Mayor-making ceremony takes place in early May at the first meeting of the Council year. The Town Mayor chairs the Town’s Council meetings and represents the town at civic and ceremonial functions. During the mayoral year, the Mayor will attend around 300 engagements.

Noticeboards We have 25 noticeboards in and around Farnham. They are located at various locations in the town centre and surrounding villages. The notices are updated every two weeks.

Planning applications The responsibility for deciding the outcome of planning applications lies with the planning authority which is Waverley Borough Council. Before determining an application, Waverley has to consult with a number of organisations which includes Farnham Town Council.

Members of the planning consultative group consider every application that is made within the Farnham area and submit comments to Waverley Borough Council.

Toilets We look after the public toilets in Central car park, Gostrey Meadow and The Hart. There are baby-changing and disabled accessible facilities at each of the public conveniences.

The toilets are open from 8am-6pm on weekdays and from 9am-5pm at weekends and Bank holidays and they are checked and cleaned twice a day.

Community toilet schemeWe run a community toilet scheme and encourage local businesses to work with us to provide additional clean, safe and accessible toilets during their opening hours.

Under the scheme members of the public are welcome to use the toilets without having to

make a purchase from the business. Participating businesses display a sticker on their windows.

Town partnerships Farnham’s twinning with Andernach in Germany gives clubs, societies, businesses, families and individuals in Farnham the opportunity to make links with like-minded members of the community in their twin town.

The Farnham Andernach Friendship Association promotes international understanding by encouraging links between the two towns. Through Andernach, Farnham enjoys links with other communities in Europe and beyond: St Amand-Les-Eaux in France, Ekeren in Belgium, Stockerau in Austria, Zella Mehlis in Germany and Dimona in Israel.

Historically, Farnham has had formal relationships with Haren in the Netherlands, and Woodland Park (formerly West Paterson) in New Jersey, USA.

Art, culture and heritage for all

England’s Craft Town There are many factors that combine to make Farnham special but one element that sits at the heart of the area’s distinctiveness is craft.

Farnham’s connection with craft dates back to the Roman times but it was the Victorian era and the great success of The Farnham Pottery in Wrecclesham that earned the town a reputation for being a craft town.

Over the years, this status has been enhanced by Farnham becoming home to the University for the Creative Arts, the Farnham Maltings, Crafts Study Centre and The New Ashgate Gallery.

In 2013, Farnham was designated as England’s Craft Town. This honour ensures that Farnham will continue to be home to world renowned craft artists and the next generation of craft-makers.

In February, a panel will be visiting to evaluate whether Farnham should be England’s first ‘Craft City’.

Get crafty Visit www.crafttownengland.org for a list of craft organisations in Farnham.

Craft month In October, Farnham hosts a celebration of craft. Throughout the month, there are hundreds of ways for you to get involved with craft-themed events.

The programme includes opportunities to meet craft-makers, to try your hand at a new interest or to buy a unique piece of local craft.

Visit www.crafttownengland.org for information about how to get involved.

Open studios in Farnham Every summer, local artists open their doors and invite the public to visit their studio and see them at work. To see who is taking part in Surrey Artists’ Open Studios or to find a local artist, visit www.surreyopenstudios.org.uk.

Surrey Artist of the Year As a celebration of artistic talent, the New Ashgate Gallery and the Surrey Artists’ Open

As a town with a great history, an ongoing centre of arts and crafts and a community of residents who love where they live, Farnham does much to share its heritage.

From glimpses into the area’s prehistoric past, famous inventions and the lives of ordinary people, local historians invite you to discover the story of Farnham. As the town continues to flourish, there are plenty of reasons to celebrate its cultural present and future too.

The Centre hosts inspiring exhibitions which are free to attend.

Grants for creative projects Grants are available for Farnham organisations that wish to apply for funding for an art-based educational activity. To be eligible for consideration, the project should have a creative input and benefit Farnham people.

Farnham Town Council is a trustee of the South Street Trust Fund which awards around 25 grants each year. Previous projects which have been successful for funding include a clay exploration class for children aged 3 to 11 and the commissioning of some artists to work with children in 12 local schools.

Visit www.farnham.gov.uk/grants for details about grant criteria and an application form.

Hidden HeritageBeneath our feet are hints into Farnham’s historic past, including ancient burial sites, potteries and brickworks and the footprints of the homes of our ancestors. Fortunately, much of this has been revealed over the years through excavations and research before being painstakingly recorded by archaeologists and historians. The results of this work is Farnham’s Hidden Heritage and, thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, it is gradually being presented in a lively and accessible way for people of all ages to enjoy.

Look out for information boards around the town and pick up the series of five leaflets covering stone age, late prehistoric, Roman, Saxon and medieval life in Farnham. These are just the beginning of Farnham’s Hidden Heritage project. More information and the leaflets are available at www.farnham.gov.uk/hiddenheritage.

Whether you are looking for a fresh challenge, opportunities to socialise or new ways to fill your time, Farnham is bursting with things to do.

As well as visiting arts and heritage venues and gorgeous parks and gardens, Farnham residents benefit from plenty of opportunities to get actively involved in clubs and informal groups. Social activities are often volunteering opportunities too – benefitting you and your community.

Try something new

Why try something new? Doing something new, whether it is meeting new people, learning a new skill or going somewhere different keeps life interesting and varied. Volunteering, clubs and hobbies can also be great for combating loneliness and for benefitting others in the community.

One example is Men in Sheds which is aimed at men who enjoy fixing or making things and being outdoors.

Men in Sheds meets on a drop-in basis on Tuesdays at the space2grow garden (next to Bishop’s Meadow). It’s a very relaxed, informal group and new members are welcome. It’s also free. Men in Sheds welcomes donations of unwanted tools and equipment too. Full details at www.farnhammaltings.com/artsandhealth/shed or call 01252 745428.

The ‘Things to do’ section of Farnham Town Council’s website is a great place to find out about sports clubs and other societies.

Share your skills or your timeEveryone has a skill or ability that others could benefit from. Whether it’s a spot of gardening, driving someone to the shops or cooking a hot meal for someone who can no longer do so

themselves, Timebank helps you put your time and talents to good use. It works by recording every hour of time you give helping someone else, giving you a time credit that you can exchange should you ever need someone else’s help. Skills like DIY and offering friendship can make a huge difference.

The Farnham area Timebank is run by Hale Community Centre. Find out more in the What We Do section of the centre’s website: www.halecommunitycentre.org.uk.

Services to Farnham Awards With so many people volunteering through local organisations or helping out neighbours in need, it is no surprise that the annual Services to Farnham Awards are so popular.

Each year, dozens of local people are nominated for an award to thank them for their contributions to the community, whether by helping a local young people’s group, helping an elderly neighbour with shopping or fundraising for a local good cause. Anyone can nominate.

Nominations are open each year from October to December. Nominating is easy. Simply pick up a form from the council office or go online at www.farnham.gov.uk/servicestofarnham.

Farnham Town Council aims to be carbon neutral by 2030 and to work with and encourage the local community to reduce carbon emissions at a local level.

With 2020 marking the start of a new year and a new decade, this is a great time to pledge to reduce your carbon emissions. We’d love to hear what you are committing to do so we can share your ideas on our website and social media as a way to inspire others.

Here are a few ideas for leading a greener lifestyle in Farnham.

Greener Farnham

Eat with the seasonsOne of the ways to reduce our carbon footprint is to eat with the seasons and to buy British, and preferably local, food.

Some ways you can do this in Farnham include:

Buy from the Farmers’ MarketThe Farnham Farmers’ Market is held on the fourth Sunday of the month from 10am to 1.30pm in Central Car Park.

Every month you can expect there to be 30-40 stalls selling produce which has been grown, raised, caught, baked, pickled, processed or made within 50 miles of the market. This includes a wide range of farm produce, hand-made consumable products and craft items.

Shop at the Country MarketFarnham Country Market, formerly the WI Market, has been selling home produced items for 70 years. You can buy a range of cakes, bakes and savouries, honey, turned wood, greetings cards, knitted and sewn items, homemade soap, jewellery, gifts, and preserves.

The market has a stall in the Cellar Bar at the Maltings Monthly Market on the first Saturday of each month, except January, from 9am to 4pm. Orders in advance can be sent to [email protected].

Apply for an allotmentGrowing and eating something you have grown gives a great sense of achievement and tastes delicious too!

If managed properly, an allotment can provide you with fruit and veg all year round which will cut down on the cost of your weekly food bill.

Farnham Town Council has eight allotments in and around Farnham. If you would like to put your name down for a plot, please complete an allotment application form at www.farnham.gov.uk.

Support the community farm Farnham Community Farm is a local vegetable growing project. Become a member and receive a weekly share of the farm’s vegetable harvest and the opportunity to get involved in regular volunteering and events. Find out more at www.farnhamcommunityfarm.com.

Rowledge Gardening Club arranges organised visits to gardens of interest in the summer and holds meetings and talks by guest speakers in the winter months. They meet at Rowledge Village Hall at 8pm on the second Thursday of the month. For more information see www.rowledgegardeningclub.org.uk.

Repair it Volunteers offer free help with repairs to clothes and textiles, electrical items, laptops, mechanical items, furniture and bikes at the Farnham Repair Cafe.

Visitors can bring along up to two items per repair café. The café is held on the second Saturday of the month from 10am to 1pm at The Spire Church, South Street. More information can be found on the Farnham Repair Café’s Facebook page.

Do you know how to make repairs? If you would like to put your skill to good use by being a volunteer at the Repair Café, please email [email protected].

Farnham is a town with wonderful public gardens. Whatever the season, there are several worth visiting. Here are some of our favourites.

The gardens of Farnham

Batting’s Garden Junction of A287 and The Ridgeway Enter through the splendid oak gateA wildlife garden tucked behind a hedgerow alongside an otherwise busy junction. Looked after by conservation volunteers and well worth a visit if you enjoy an informal space to wander among grasses, wildflowers, birds and insects. The garden was presented to the town in 1933. It was given by Walter Batting who set up a drapers and outfitters in Alton and later retired to Great Austins.

Victoria Garden Off Brightwells Road An award-winning garden in Farnham’s town centre, this hidden gem never fails to disappoint. Loved equally by children, office workers and gardeners, Victoria Garden makes wonderful use of its location of a former outdoor swimming pool. Roses, clematis, lavenders and hebes abound but this is a garden to enjoy all year round, with giant chessboard, mosaic hopscotch and mini maze.

Haren Garden Enter from South Street (east side) Celebrating the friendship between Farnham and the Netherlands’ town of Haren, this small garden appropriately features lots of Dutch tulips,

making a visit essential in spring or early summer. Large trees and attractive shrubs provide shade while the River Wey gives added interest.

The garden remembers the generosity of Farnham residents to the people of Haren in World War 2 and after flooding in 1953.

Evelyn Borelli Garden of Rest Falkner Road The Evelyn Borelli Garden of Rest offers not only a peaceful spot to reflect, it also includes several pieces of public art. The result is an interesting place to walk or sit, with a modern, creative feel.

Museum Garden West Street A tranquil walled garden just steps away from the hustle and bustle of the town centre. A perfect place to visit during a lunch break or to conclude a visit to the Museum.

The Garden of Reflection, West Street Cemetery Recently extended and refurbished, this garden offers a calm and peaceful place to remember loved ones. A largely white planting scheme is complemented with seasonal bulbs, plants and shrubs. Subtle screening offers privacy from neighbouring allotments.

National Garden Scheme Many of Farnham’s amateur and professional gardeners take part in the National Garden Scheme each year, opening up their gardens to visitors for free or a small donation. Search for local gardens at www.ngs.org.uk or look out for the local guide over spring and summer.

Farnham in Bloom is 30Thirty years ago, Farnham resident and national judge of flower arranging, the late Madge Green adopted a project to make Farnham beautiful by bringing flowers into the town.

She formed a working group which eventually worked alongside Farnham Town Council, local businesses and voluntary organisations.

In 2005, the project was handed over to Farnham Town Council. It has grown in size and has touched the lives of residents in all parts of Farnham. How will you help us to celebrate this inclusive community project?

Ways you can celebrate Farnham in Bloom ■ Plant a sunflower for everybody who lives in

your home. Who can grow the tallest?■ Organise or volunteer to take part in a litter pick.■ Enter the Secret Gardens competition. ■ Come along to the Bloomin’ Kids Gardening

Workshops at Easter or October half term. ■ Visit the Allotment Show in September. ■ Plant some bulbs.■ Grow your own – you do not need a big space. ■ Encourage wildlife with a bug hotel or a pile of leaves.■ Plant a pollinator garden to attract bees.■ Make a hanging basket – hang it at home or

give it as a present. ■ Grow flowers and herbs.■ Make a herb garden with your children.■ Save rainwater for watering when it is dry.■ Plant a commemorative tree or shrub.■ Sponsor a town centre hanging basket.■ Get outside and enjoy Farnham’s flowers and

great open spaces.

Florence Nightingale (1820-1910)Two hundred years ago, Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of nursing reform, was born. Florence had a connection with Farnham through her aunt, Ann, who was married to George Nicholson the owner of Waverley Abbey House. Whilst staying in this area, Florence is recorded as taking an interest in the welfare of the poor and became friendly with the Reverend Richard Garth who lived at Lowlands, later renamed Brightwells House. One other tangible connection with Florence Nightingale is a travelling Holy Communion set which she presented to Farnham Hospital. It is inscribed ‘For the use of the Nurses and Patients at Farnham Hospital from Florence Nightingale of the Crimea’. A further gift of a similar set and crucifix is also recorded.

Other Farnham anniversariesIn 2020, the Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its centenary, it will be 50 years since the Craft Study Centre achieved charitable status and Hale Community Centre will mark its tenth birthday.
