There is another group that also contributes so very much to making BCYC such a friendly and special place – our employees. I don’t want to mention them by name because I will undoubtedly miss someone. Obviously, our staff is not volunteering their time at BCYC, it is their place of employment. However, they always greet us with a smile and do their best to ensure that the members and their guests have a wonderful time while at BCYC. If a member requires some help, there is usually someone who quickly lends a hand or offers some advice on how to accomplish that member’s goal. Many of our staff have been at BCYC for several years and have become another branch of the family of BCYC. Often, they have a solution or suggestion to accomplish something that the members hadn’t yet thought of. We all owe a great deal of thanks to the hard-working staff of the friendliest club on the bay. They are also part of the reason why we have such a good reputation.

Make a point to give your thanks to those on the staff who go out of their way to support us and make our time at the club so special.

It has been my pleasure during the last few years to write several Masthead articles thanking the many members who have volunteered so much energy and time to help make our experience at BCYC so pleasant and enjoyable. Sweet News – Becoming a BCYC Member

Being a part of this great legacy is something to be very proud of. The members before us created a sustainable, financially strong club and, importantly, the friendliest club around!

The New Member Cocktail Party in October was a huge success, thanks to your participation. We welcome Regular Flag members – Janell Adams, Stephen Brand and Nayda Arnout, Dan and Sue Chambers, and David Reed – and Natalie Tolar, JFlag member.

The August JFlag event was very successful. Thank you to Vice Commodore, Chuck Wert (True), and Rhonda Tolar (Wild Thing) for use of their boats, as 22 current and prospective JFlag members enjoyed a harbor cruise and got to know more about BCYC. The 2016 JFlag Committee, comprising Karafaye Buffa, Warrick Leigh, Natalie Tolar and Gary Wat, are endeavoring to create fun events and increase JFlag membership at BCYC.

Thank you for your assistance in helping to introduce new members to BCYC!

A Note from our Chaplain . . .“Life is like a camera ...

The fall sailing season is in full swing with the Fall Sailing Program reaching its halfway point, and regattas nearly every weekend. This time of year brings with it some of the best events on the SCYYRA calendar. Our BCYC Race Team has been busy competing in events, including the Fall Gold Cup at Newport Harbor Yacht Club, the Fall Junior Invitational at San Diego Yacht Club, as well as the first regattas of the CFJ Shadden Series and C420 Perry Series. Later this month, we’re looking forward to some high school regattas, as well as the Halloween regatta at Lido Isle Yacht Club. For advanced sailors looking to step up their game, we encourage you to apply for the SCYYRA Junior Sailing Team with applications and resume due Oct. 15.

Of course, we are also preparing for our very own Corinthian Cup regatta Oct. 22-23. The Corinthian Cup not only scores competitors in the individual low-point format, but also in the team high-point format. BCYC is the defending champion this year, so we need all junior racing sailors in Sabots and CFJs to come out and help us repeat the victory! The more sailors we have on the line, the better our chances of taking home the Cup.

As with any sport, the key to success in sailing is preparation. Even if you are not enrolled in the Fall Program, but would like to join a practice here and there, give us a call and we’d love to have you out on a Friday afternoon. There are many more events coming up this season, including the next North Series for Sabots in Mission Bay, the Turkey Day Regatta up in Alamitos Bay and the Holiday Cup at LIYC. Hope to see you on the water!

Busy Fall Season and 11th Annual Corinthian Cup

Junior Sailing DirectorCameron [email protected]

Recently, a greater number of college sailing teams have implemented a requirement for helmets, and sailors have tried out new and more effective life jackets as well. While sailors scrutinize these steps being taken to improve safety on the water, the importance of prioritizing pre-race safety cannot be overstated.

At the Junior Olympics this summer, I allowed a parent to help pull my club 420 down a ramp. Absentmindedly, I thought nothing of his forceful steering of the dolly down a steep incline. But as he overzealously yanked the dolly around, its underside swung around and sliced my foot, landing me in the emergency room. My unfortunate injury (on land, no less) prevented me from sailing in the rest of my regattas for the summer.

Sailors can easily avoid the injury I suffered to my foot. As an avid sailor, I know it is easy to forget to prioritize safety off the water. I have witnessed narrowly avoided freak accidents on land, from falling masts barely missing sailors, to boats almost coming off trailers due to not enough hands holding the boat. Because my accident did occur, it shifted my perspective entirely on potential injuries sustained whilst off the water. “Safety in sailing” means the regatta in total, from the second you arrive to unload your boat, to when you place it back on the trailer. Overlooking this fact for just a mere moment is what truly caused my injury.

BCYC Summer Anglers!

AnglingRhonda [email protected]

Angling

During Clambake this year, we held our third 24-plus-phour fishing challenge. Many members, including Vice Commodore Chuck Wert, and his grandsons, Ryan and Miles, participated. Russell Grant had amazing luck catching three yellowtail tuna, three barracuda and nine sea bass. Members proudly displayed their great catches as you can see from these pictures!

Cat Harbor is a great place to fish while at anchor. Adding the fishing challenge to the Clambake cruise provided a great opportunity for our members and families to fish during one of the most favorite BCYC cruises.

Enjoy the fun photos of BCYC members fishing!

The Gala – very cool, elegant and fabulous. This was a collaboration of an amazing group of member volunteers and club staff, each owning their part of the production. Ramsey Johansson and Rhonda Tolar, event chairs, followed up on the details, creating a script that can be followed in the coming years. Ladies, you made it happen!

For the past two years, BCYC has received the Ring of Lights Best Decorated Yacht Club award presented by the Commodores Club, host of the Christmas Boat Parade (Commodores Club is part of the Newport Beach Chamber of Commerce). This was achieved because Kari Konapelsky took ownership, allowing her merry band of elves to pay attention to the details. You too can own a small portion of this undertaking by carving a few hours out of your busy schedule to be part of decorating the club on Nov. 20 and 21. Start time is 10 a.m. each day, and many hands make this amazing transformation of BCYC become a reality very quickly. To receive this coveted award three years in a row would be quite an accomplishment. Contact Kari at [email protected] for additional information.

Make plans to enjoy NFL Sundays at the club. Enjoy brunch and watch the early games, and then watch the afternoon games while savoring a beverage and food in the Columbia Room. NFL Sunday specials, including buckets of beer, chicken wings and pizza, are available in the bar from 1-8 p.m. Thirsty Thursday Happy Hour, every Thursday from 4-6 p.m., features 50 percent off appetizers, draft beer, house wine and well drinks. Take in a cool sunset and enjoy happy hour pricing.

Avalon – Here We Come!

CruisingLauri and Secy Steve [email protected]

We had a great cruise to Cambria. Several cruisers enjoyed lunch at Ventana Grill on their way up the coast. This was followed by an impromptu cocktail party Friday night. The Scarecrow Festival is a hoot and the cruisers had a spirited time. Lots of great wines were tasted at Justin, Opalo and J Dusi Vineyards. What a beautiful weekend we all had! You can check out the BCYC website for all the pictures.

Get ready for the Avalon Cruise Oct. 21-23, our last cruise for 2016. You can sign up until Oct. 15 for this popular cruise. Activities will include a floating cocktail party Friday night, Saturday morning mini golf tournament and Saturday Night group dinner. Please note that this will not be at Catalina Island Yacht Club this year. Historically the weather has always been great this time of year, so please sign up and cruise with us!

Please consider joining us for the Oct. 17 Cruise Committee meeting at 7 p.m. Bring your calendars – we’ll discuss ideas and locations for the 2017 cruising season. We value your participation and input regarding club cruises, and they are a great opportunity to make more friends and get to know each other better.

See you on the water.

Fabulous Fall

ActivitiesKristy Parr/Kari [email protected] [email protected]

Fall is here and the Activities Committee is excited, as we have some fabulous fun in store for y’all. Pull on your boots and tie up your neckerchiefs for the Cowboy Round-up Oct. 29. Learn some line dances at 5 p.m. and be ready to do some boot scooting to the tunes of Steve Woods later that evening. “Cookie” Chef George Rapicault and his bunch of cowpokes will be putting out a scrumptious feed as well.

We will be celebrating the best of BCYC at Awards Night Nov. 5. With a great deal of prepping and polishing, many hands will make the process go quickly and smoothly. Please contact us if you are interested in helping prepare for this festive evening.

Get your merry on and help turn the club into a Holiday Wonderland. Elves are wanted (AND needed) for decorating on Sunday and Monday, Nov. 20 and 21. The Activities Committee would love to have your input on these events and more! Please join us the second Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. to become part of this fun.

Welcome Fall!

Las CommodorasBobbi [email protected]

Las Commodoras kicked off September by visiting Sherman Gardens and Library, where we had a scrumptious lunch and garden tour. This facility is an Orange County treasure.

I have heard many com-ments about the downstairs bathroom accessories, lotion and sunscreen dispenser and Kleenex box holder, and agree with everyone that they are functional and beautiful. The 2015 Las Commodoras board, with President Nancy Bryant, purchased the items as the annual gift to BCYC. They really add a touch of elegance for all to enjoy!

Upcoming events sponsored by Las Commodoras include:

•Oktoberfest, Oct. 8 – enjoy traditional fare prepared toperfection by Chef Georges Rapicault and his culinary team

•AntiqueRoadshowluncheon,Nov.10–thisuniqueeventwill be chaired by Lori Curtain and Marjorie Davis

•HolidayMania luncheon, Dec. 8 – this popular holidaytreat is the final Las Commodoras event of 2016

Make plans to be part of one or all these luncheons. You will have a great time and enjoy some fine food.

Reflections and Commitment

Vice CommodoreSandy [email protected]

Vice CommodoreChuck Wert [email protected]

This is the time of year for reflection, and beginning the planning process for the year ahead. In my estimation, 2016 has been a great year at BCYC. Our major sailing regattas are mostly concluded with the winners crowned, and our Taco Tuesday event was a rousing success, continuing to grow beyond all expectations. The Cruise Committee has taken us from the desert to the sea, and even “Under the Sea” at our annual Clambake. Our Activities Committee and Las Commodoras have provided non-stop opportunities for all of us to enjoy all our great club has to offer. The amazing Tuscany on the Terrace and trip to Sherman Gardens are two recent examples of their many accomplishments. The Gala, a sold out evening that benefited the Sailing Foundation (BSRA) and our Junior Program is another example of the amazing possibilities at BCYC because of the dedication and enthusiasm of the membership.

While these committees are the most visible, there is a host of other committees in which member volunteers give a great deal of their time to ensure all that we enjoy gets done. There is a list of all the BCYC committees on page two of The Masthead. Each and every one is looking for volunteers to help in 2017. If you have an interest, make plans to volunteer some of your time – please let the committee chairs know of your interest and they will make certain you will be an integral part of events in the coming year.

Having been privileged to chair the monthly Steering Committee meetings this past year, where each committee chair reports on what is upcoming, I was amazed, gratified and gained a special appreciation for the dedication and timeless efforts of each and every one of these volunteers, and their committee members, who have given their time so we can relish belonging to the Friendliest Club on the Bay.

Soon, you will receive a ballot featuring Board of Directors candidates who would serve as directors for the next two years. These candidates have been carefully selected by our Nominating Committee based on their qualifications and commitment to BCYC. I ask that you take the time to review this group of nominees and please vote for the candidates of your choice. The club is dependent upon an effective Board of Directors so we all can continue to enjoy BCYC today and in the future. Voting is easy and the impact is extremely important.

“Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart!” - Elizabeth Andrew -

BOO…

Sail Fleet CaptainPaul [email protected]

It is definitely scary to think that there are so few ocean races in Newport Beach in October. The only ocean race is the NOSA 14-Mile Bank Race, a long-time favorite.

Save your Halloween costume to wear while racing the famous BCYC Hot Rum Series, which begins in November and ends in January. This is a FUN series. Although we hold two races on a Sunday for three months, it’s the post-race party that attracts everyone. It’s sort of a scaled back Taco Tuesday. In addition to usual prizes for 1st, 2nd and 3rd places, we also have a “best costume” prize.

A reminder – in November, a new event called the Fall Finale will run. The Association of Orange Coast Yacht Clubs will team with American Legion, Bahia Corinthian and Balboa Yacht Clubs to put on a multi-fleet, multi-venue sailing event. PHRF and cruising class boats will sail (race) an ocean course and Harbor 20s will sail (race) a bay course. This event is truly aimed at quantity – we want lots of sailboats to participate, and the post-race party is at BCYC. Register at aocyc.org

Finally, be prepared to see over 100 skippers and guests from across the United States participate in Gary Jobson’s annual Fantasy Sail event Dec. 2-3. These skippers made significant donations to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society during one of the many Leukemia Cup Regattas. BCYC will host the participants and Race Committee will run multiple medium-distance ocean races on that Saturday. The event will have national press coverage and spectator boats are encouraged.

Visit the club office to purchase your burgee stickers!
