Local InformationThe majority of the population are Arabs, although there are also sizeable numbers of people from South Asia in Bahrain. Manama is the capital of Bahrain and is the most densely populated city. Riffa and Muharraq are also large cities.

Islam is the official religion of Bahrain, and the majority of people follow Shia Islam.

Arabic is the official language of Bahrain, but most people speak English.

Bahrain is now a modern, developed country with widely available tourist facilities.

The vast majority of the Bahrain Island is a plain desert, Bahrain also has a fertile strip along the north coast, with most of the oil industry concentrated near the highest point of main Bahrain Island, Jebel ad-Dukhan.

The economy of Bahrain is dependent on oil prices, though Bahrain does not actually produce oil.

For the Tourist

AlcoholThe legal drinking age in Bahrain is: - 18 years for beer/wine - 21 years for hard liquor

- Public intoxication in Bahrain is a CRIME, and will lead to arrest.

- Any measurable amount of alcohol in the bloodstream while in public may be considered public intoxication.

- Each liberty party will have a non-drinker.

CurrencyThe local currency of Bahrain is the Bahraini Dinar (BD). Credit cards are widely accepted at ATM’s and banks.

USD BD1.00 = 0.382.70 = 1.00

Tourist TipsBahrain follows the Islamic Calendar and hence, Friday is the weekly holiday, equivalent to Sunday at other places. Most businesses take a small break during the afternoon between 1pm and 3pm, and later open in the evening for business.
