Bailey—Characteristics of Effective Learning
Bailey enjoys all aspects of school life. He likes to take a leading role in play, although he will listen to his friends and take
account of their ideas. Bailey has a 'can do' attitude and likes to share his successes with everyone.
Bailey is very articulate and is happy to talk about how he is feeling. He can work through any problems that may arise and can
talk about the strategies he has used.
When there were not enough washing up brushes,
Charlie and Jasmine were starting to argue. Bailey
said “ I know, let’s use sponges as well. Then we can
all have a go!”
“I feel sad for the soldiers that were scared
cos they didn’t have no mummies to cuddle
cos they weren’t near home”
Evie asked if she could put Bailey’s
name in the Gold Book, because he
had helped her to make good
choices when she was cross.
Bailey told his friend to get a sand timer when
they sat at the computer together so they could
take turns and have a go each.
Bailey could talk about how to be a good friend
and how you have to make up when you have an
argument with someone.
When Bailey had been waiting for his turn in
the dinner queue another child pushed in
front of him Bailey said “that’s not fair, it was
my turn next!”. The other child ignored Bailey,
so Bailey told the boy he had to go to the
back of the queue, which the boy did.
“I feel sad for the soldiers that were scared
cos they didn’t have no mummies to cuddle
cos they weren’t near home”
Bailey and Evie were playing with the
marble run and it kept toppling over. Bai-
ley said “ we need to hold it” and Evie
said “no, we need to get another piece on
the bottom!”. “Good idea Evie,” said Bailey
and ran to the box to find more marble
run.
In the playground, the
lunchtime supervisor saw Bai-
ley leading a game of ‘What’s
the time Mr Wolf?’ and ex-
plaining the rules to his friends.
During show and tell, Bailey asked if he
could tell everyone about the medal he
won at swimming at the weekend. Bailey
said “I was so happy, everyone clapped me
when I went to get my medal. I had to
swim on my front and my back. had been
busy practising on my back cos it’s really
tricky. But I got it right and my dad said he
was proud of me!”
“This is the design for my Christmas card. I decided
to make a pop up star inside but I needed
some help from Mrs Cowell. I think my
mummy will really like it”.
The class challenge was to build a bridge for the
Billy Goats Gruff. Bailey had the idea of making
one outside. He got his friends to help him carry
the big blocks outside and then selected some ma-
terial to be the river. Bailey noticed that the long
planks were not long enough to stretch over the
fabric so he folded the material to make it smaller.
“The dentist came to look at everyone's teeth. I was feeling scared and I didn't
want her to look in my mouth. I told Poppy and she said she would go first. And it
would be ok. When I had my turn I was pleased with myself, and I got a sticker!”.
Bailey went to the friendship stop at playtime when
he couldn’t find his friends on the playground. A
lunchtime supervisor asked him if he was ok, and he said
he was waiting for a friend to come and play with him.
We had a brand new Lego table in the
classroom. Bailey was able to wait for his
turn by getting a sand timer and then he
reminded Fergus that we need to look
after the table because it belongs to the
school.
Bailey told me he felt sad today because his Dad has gone away
for 3 weeks to work. He asked me if he could make a card for his
Dad because he misses him.
