Financial AuditI would like to acknowledge the work that Diane Gregor contributes to ensure the school finances are accurate and funding is allocated correctly across the site. Each year, the school is audited to ensure funds are managed correctly. In a large site, this is a complete and time consuming role and only one component of Diane’s role within the school. The Auditor was extremely impressed with Diane’s professionalism and organisation. Well done and thank you for your tireless work Diane.

Absence without explanation If students have not arrived and signed in by 9:30am and we are unaware of the reason for this absence, a SMS is sent to the family to determine a reason for the absence. Please ensure you respond by text or phone the office. It is our legal responsibility to chase up all unexplained absence.

Lateness Please ensure that if your child arrives after the siren, he/she is signed in electronically at the front office. It is critical that we are fully aware of who is onsite at all times.

Illness / AbsenceThank you for keeping us informed when your child/ren are absent. We ask that you please keep your child home until 24 hours after their last symptom. This will help reduce the risk of illnesses spreading throughout the school community.

Music Captains:Congratulations to Miabella and Madison on being elected 2019 Music Captains.

Leadership Opportunities

Expectations of school leaders Put effort into all curriculum areas Keep up to date with expected work Complete extra-curricular activities offered Engage in school community services eg. Traffic monitor crossing, lunch play activities. Displays a positive, responsible and reliable attitude towards school at all times

I was fortunate enough to sit on the panel for the School Captains. I was impressed with all of the applicants in regards to the level of maturity and desire to represent the school in the best way possible. However, what impressed me the most was the absolute dedication they have to their education at Balaklava Primary School. To those who narrowly missed out, congratulations for taking the courage to step outside of your comfort zone. We certainly do have great leaders amongst us.

All captains will be presented with their badges at the Week 6 assembly. We hope to see you there.

Term 1 SRC members will also be presented with a certificate at the Week 6 assembly and photos will follow in the Week 7 newsletter.

Congratulations to our 2019 School, Sport and Music Captains. A leadership position in the school is highly valued by staff, students and community. We are fortunate to have many leadership opportunities for students at Balaklava Primary School. For our Upper Primary students, they have been learning about leadership over their primary years and this is their chance to lead the school in a confident and positive manner.

School captainsThese 2 positions are open only to our year 7 students. The successful students will be called upon for a variety of roles such as: Welcoming guests to the school Take on the executive roles in SRC Making speeches at school functions Attending the ANZAC dawn ceremony and Remembrance Day service Running assemblies

Students who are then short listed, are interviewed by a panel. Congratulations to Janna, Alex, Rachel and Josh who were selected at the 2019 School Captain and Vice Captains.

Spotlight on Balaklava Primary Site Improvement Plan

Each site is required to implement a 3 year Site Improvement Plan. The areas for development are determined when the staff look at the student’s results in Term 4 of the previous year. For the 2019 – 2021 Site Improvement Plan, we

have determined that we need to focus on Mathematics, particularly number. In order to do this, we have set two goals and challenges of practice. In this

newsletter, I will introduce goal 1 and in a following newsletter, goal 2

Goal 1: Increase student achievement in mathematics R-7, particularly in the number strand.

Challenge of Practice:If we develop a common approach to teaching Big Ideas in Number (BIiN): trusting the count, place value, multiplicative thinking and explicitly teach it 4 times per week, then we will increase students’ achievement in mathematics, particularly the number strand.

Staff have been undergoing training and discussing how to ensure we are consitent across the school. They have pre-tested students to determine which area of Big Ideas in Number they need to be focussing on. You may recall, in Week 1, we shared a photograph of the mathematic resources that Jo prepared for the new reception students. If you would like access to resources to use at home to help develop your child’s number knowledge, please contact their classroom teacher or Jo.

Big Ideas in Numbers

Page 7: Balaklava Primary School newsletter...for development are determined when the staff look at the student’s results in Term 4 of the previous year. For the 2019 – 2021 Site Improvement

57

Trusting the CountIn Maths the whole school has a focus on ‘Trusting the count’. This means that each object counted must be given one number name.

For example

1 = (One face)

2 = (Two faces)

3 = (Three faces)

Students need to recognise that “three” means a collection of three whatever it looks like. For example 3 eggs, 3 chickens or 3 blocks.Students need to be reading, writing and using the words and numerals for the numbers 0-9, recognising small collections without counting (subitising) – more information will be in the next newsletter on this. Being able to name numbers in terms of their parts (part-part-whole) – more information will be in coming newsletters.

Activities for you to try at home

• Play with blocks – can you please find 4 yellow blocks? 3 red blocks? etc• Make 5 sand castles in the sand pit. Write the number 5 in sand.• Draw on a whiteboard 7 bears and write the number 7 as a numeral and a word. • Count using pop sticks groups of 10. Then count in 10’s. 10, 20, 30 etc• Play Dominoes

It is expected that each class will be undertaking activities at least 4 times per week to develop and or consolidate student’s number knowledge.

How many dots can you see?

What strategy did you use to work that out?

Congratulations to Miabella Koenig for earning the position of Music Captain – Vocal Specialist and to Madison Litzow for gaining the position of Music Captain – Instrumental Specialist.

Several classes are learning about texture, tone and isolating instruments in a piece of music.

An Overview of Class Music

Room 8 have been working on pitch, trying to work out which instruments are high and low.

A reminder that there is a limited supply of choir books this year. I can order more, but there will be a wait. Books come with a CD and are $12.00. You need to pay for them at the front office and bring your receipt to me in the music room where I will hand out the CD and songbook.

Choir students – come and see me for the secret code!

Bonjour et Bienvenu a tout le monde.Welcome everyone.

Bienvenu to all new and continuing students. It has been an exciting start to the year and I am sure this will set the pattern for 2019

R/1 and 2/3Our R/1 and 2/3 classes have been busy learning new words and others practicing French sounds and vocabulary related to colours and numbers, as well as responding to greetings and join in songs and games.

Years 3/4These classes are revising vocabulary related to the family and students are introducing their families to friends. They are consolidating their understanding of grammatical gender for nouns in French. Nouns in French are either feminine or masculine and they are easier to identify when we talk about people!

Ma famille.Ma grand-mère my grandmother Mon grand-père my grandfatherMa mère my mother Mon père my father Ma soeur my sister Mon frère my brotherMa demi-soeur my step sister Mon demi-frère my step brother

Years 5/6/7These classes are consolidating vocabulary and phrases learnt in previous years and have started to apply these words in the construction of short sentences. They are practicing responding to short questions such as

As-tu des frères et des soeurs?

Oui, Jái un frėre et une soeur

Non, je nái pas de frères ou de soeurs.

They are also increasing their knowledge on the geography of France and learning about French speaking countries.

A bientôt!Madame Cereceda

I am not at school next week because, earlier in the year I booked a trip to Melbourne to see The Eagles in concert. I am looking forward to enjoying their music and stage presence. We are going with friends from the Adelaide Hills, and are spending some time with them in Victoria before coming home on the long weekend.

These friends are very special, and have greatly supported us with the loss of our son(s) because they too have lost a son. They have an inside knowledge of our struggles, and have experienced the same grief and loss.

A common saying is “I know how you feel…” Very often the people who say that, despite it being in good intention, don’t really know how you are feeling. So it is a blessing when you find someone who really does know what you are going through. You can closely relate, and often a nod or a sigh by the other person is all that you need to hear.

So, when your child tells you something, especially something that has affected how they feel, be sensitive, understanding (as far as you can) and encouraging with your support. A good way to start is “I am not sure if I know exactly how you are feeling…..would you like to talk about it?” It may just encourage them to share their feelings, and not bottle them up. Hopefully this is worth a thought.

In room 6 and 7, we have been learning about healthy eating. We have been taste testing lots of new fruits and vegetables such as kiwi-fruit, pineapple, radish, capsicum and cauliflower. We also made our own fruit smoothies.

Year 6/7 Camp 2019

On the 19th of February until the 22nd of February the year six, sevens from Balaklava Primary School went to victor harbor for their aquatics camp. We left around 9am. We were on two buses and I sat next to Shyloh. We arrived at around 11:45am and ate lunch. Once we were done eating we started to set up tents. I was in a tent with Kasey, Chelsea and Jasmin. Once we set up tents we just hung around the campsite. Some people were playing cricket. Others were talking. On the first night for tea we had sausages in bread. After dinner we went for a walk to the local playground and played hide and seek in the dark. After we finished we walked back to camp and slept. On the second day we had surfing and body boarding. We were separated into groups. I was in yellow. Surfing and body boarding was fun even though I hit my head on the back of my board. Once we finished our first lot of aquatics we went to the beach and waited for the bus. Once we arrived to the campsite we had showers, dinner and went to sleep. On the third day we were put into our groups we had for surfing and body boarding and we went snorkeling and kayaking. One group stayed at the campsite and went to the waterpark while the other group went to aquatics. Once we were all done we talked and relaxed until showers, dinner and sleep. On the last day we packed up everything and went to wait for the buses home. We arrived back at Balaklava around 2:45pm.

By Flynn YoungI liked the surfing and body boarding at Middleton Beach. I liked it because it was a bit tricky but it was fun and funny when you fall off your surfboard or body board. I learnt if you go to Victor Harbor camp you have to at least walk 7 km to Granite Island but I learnt that there is a few seals there at Granite Island. I liked the kayaking and snorkeling because kayaking you got to play gang up chasey and snorkeling you got to feed and chase the fish in the lake.

Have you ever wondered how you can find out more about what is happening in the school or have a greater input? Have you considered joining one of our committees?

The Governing Council (GC) is an elected group of parents and teachers that oversee the management and well-being of the school community and its assets. Members of Council are elected at the Annual General Meeting and usually serve a two-year term. The tasks of GC include :

• Discussing educational policy• Liaison with staff

The Governing Council meet in the evenings, twice per term.

Sub Committees have been formed to help share the responsibilities and decision-making with a greater number of parents who are not members of the GC. Usually, one member of each committee is also a member of GC. They then report back to the GC on any recommendations made by the committee, for the GC to vote on if necessary.

Governing Council

Finance:Manages the school finances in consultation with the school community by developing an annual budget and monitoring expenditure and income throughout the year.

On Tuesday 26th February the Yr1-2 class had a very successful visit to the Marine Discovery Centre at Henley Beach. Our tour leader, Karno, lead the Beach Marine Trail and helped the children explore the foreshore.

A DVD on the Leafy Sea Dragon and a play in the school’s nature play area at lunchtime were perfect for a hot day. We then participated in activities in the aquarium area and looked at recycling and pollution issues but the OVERALL WINNER was the virtual reality session which had the children watching sharks and fish in their underwater environment while wearing individual goggles!
