What a great delight we feel in launching our first Proud Achievers magazine. Readers - from our

school community and beyond - will quickly capture the essence of our school’s vision, which is to be “a world-class community of proud and outstanding achievers”.

Proud achievements occur in many diverse areas: from the academic competitions that we regularly embrace to the other dimensions that make up a balanced education. These include: sports and fitness, business and enterprise, performing and visual arts, as well as service to the community.

As you read and view the pages of our first magazine, it’s clear that talents abound across the different achievement areas. These pages show BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug not just as a community of proud achievers, but also as a community of balanced achievers who also make important contributions to the world around them.

Internationalism DayFun at the Costume Day

Costume Day is the main attraction of the Internationalism Celebration event, held at BINUS

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, Friday (28/10). The students dressed up in costumes, taking fictional characters in novels, dramas, films, poems, cartoons and folk tales as the theme.

“This is the fourth year of Costume Day at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug and there is also a competition for students with the best costume – representing the literature theme – and we have a special award for the winner,” explained Ms. Donna Crook, the person in charge for Costume Day.

Apart from the costume party, students of Grades 11 and 12 joined in CAS (Creativity, Action, Service) also raised funds by opening Scary Café and Fun House – Fright Night with Frankenstein as their theme. The profit will be used for CAS’ social activities.

Internationalism Celebrations have been held since 24 October with "Around The World in Five Days" as its theme. Internationally themed activities were included in it, such as sing and dance competitions, fashion shows, cultural and food festivals, and folk tale storytelling. There were also film, short story and poster competitions.

Each level featured different countries and areas, such as India, China, Japan, Thailand, Korea, Indonesia, Singapore, Italy, French, United States of America, Vietnam, Cambodia, Taiwan, Venezuela, Spain, Brazil, Mexico, Philippines, United Kingdom, Malaysia and Australia.

BINUS MUSIC FIESTA 2011Show Your Talent!

Natural Disasters is the Main Topic for BINUS MUN

BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug

held BINUS Music Fiesta 2011, Saturday (15/10). In the event held at the Multifunction Hall School Simprug, 20 schools located in Jabodetabek, including international schools, national-plus schools and other schools, participated.There were piano competitions, string instrument (guitar, violin/cello)

competitions and singing competitions. The Fiesta is divided into eight categories for third to sixth graders, seventh to ninth graders and ten to twelfth graders.

BINUS Music Fiesta is an annual event held since 2007. More than just a musical competition, BINUS Music Fiesta 2011 also serves the purpose to strengthen friendships between students, teachers and musical

staff to create positive partnership.

“Music can be a media for students and teachers to develop greater achievements in the future in their communities,” said Herry Rajasa, Head Committee for BINUS Music Fiesta 2011 and Head of Music Department of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug. (YD)

The topic of natural disasters is used in the conference to grow sympathy and empathy for suffering countries. Hopefully, the topic will

also improve awareness of the environment and the earth’s condition right now.

Moreover, students gained valuable knowledge about natural disasters which occurred in the world. They listened to presentations from various speakers, such as Mr. Tiar Prasetya (Meteorology and Geophysics Agency), Mr. Yoshio Tokunaga (JICA Expert for the Disaster Management Policy) and representative of Indonesian Foreign Ministry. The experts discussed about multilateral negotiation techniques and human issues in international forums.

“We hope we can learn about assembly procedures in United Nations, General Assembly, Security Council and other institutions. Hopefully, we can also know more about the tasks and important roles played by the diplomats in international relations,” Head of BINUS MUN Club, Haydan Farizi, explained.

BINUS Model United Nations (MUN) Conference 2011A Debate to Raise Awareness of International Issues

Seven schools participated in the BINUS Model United Nations (MUN) Conference 2011. Students discussed global issues and tried

to raise awareness towards natural disasters that occurred in several different countries.

The MUN Conference invited students to compete and debate using English as the official language. They acted as diplomats representing their countries in an international forum, complete with a formal dress code, exactly like diplomats sent by their countries.

Students from Grade 11 and Grade 12 of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug participated in the conference. Other participants include students from Madania International School Bogor, Sinar

Mas School, Raffles International School, Lentera International School, SMAN 70, Dwi Warna School and SMAN 8 Pekanbaru.

Celebrating the Nation’s Independence Day at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug

There are many ways to commemorate our Nation’s Independence Day. From attending ceremonies, participating in contests held at

our neighborhood, school, or office, to raising the national flag at extreme locations.

BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug also took part in the 17th of August

Healthy Green Walk and Ride with BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug

JADE Workshop, DevelopingStudents’ TalentsThe association

of drama teachers from

several international schools, Jakarta Drama Educators (JADE), initiated to organize a Jade Workshop at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, Jakarta, Saturday (17/9). Students were between 8-16 years of age, eager to improve their skill and talent.

Schools listed in the event included BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug, BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Serpong and New Zealand International School.

The training was divided into several specializations such as creating shows and promotion, creating masks, costumes, developing basic level drama, sound projecting and basic acting knowledge, face make up, developing

comedy and multimedia in theater production. Participants were free to choose which parts they want to work on, depending on their talent and interest.

The purpose of this first - ever Jade Workshop is to provide a chance for students to socialize and learn about theatrical art and performing arts in an unique event.

“We are creating a forum where drama practitioners can interact in a creative and social level, organize the biennial theater festival, and present awards for students, which in turn will also introduce them to a healthy competition,” said Boy Philemon G. Luna, the Head of JADE and Head of Art & Drama at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug. (YD)

BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug

participated in Healthy Green Walk and Ride, which was held in the National Monument (Monas) and Sudirman area, Sunday (9/10). The event, which coincides with Car Free Day, was attended by students of Grade 8 (Middle Years Programme) and Grade 4 (Primary Years Programme). Students of the Diploma Programme (DP) from Fun & Fitness Club and Go Green Club,

coordinated the event.

Students participated in various activities. They started by walking and biking around Monas, Thamrin, Hotel Indonesia traffic circle, and back to Monas. They continued by participating in the reflection session and evaluation session for each subject.

“We chose to organize the event, which marked the main event of our academic activities, at the same day with the Car

Free Day to improve our students’ understanding about what they have learned in class. We also want to try to inspire Jakarta citizens, letting them know that there are consequences we have to face if we do not choose wisely in life,” said Ms. Alma Permana,

one of the teachers responsible in the Healthy Green Walk and Ride.

The room is not too big. It’s divided into smaller functional

rooms. They have a telephone kiosk, beauty salon, sewing room and a common room where they usually gather. This is where the students of Creativity, Action, Service (CAS) at BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug gathered and sat together.

Many students visited Women Penitentiary Class IIA located at Tangerang, Banten on Saturday (15/10). They prayed together and interacted with penitentiary residents in the hall where they usually do their activities. The editorial team captured memorable moments on that day. (YD)

Students of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug cooperated with HOPE

Worldwide Indonesia to organize the HOPE Walkathon 2011, Sunday (24/7). In the charity program, they organized a race walking competition to commemorate National Children’s Day with the theme of "We Are the Future".

More than 5,000 people participated and walked for 6.5 kilometers, from the National Monument (Monas) to Bundaran Hotel Indonesia. The large group consisted of volunteers and children from various neighborhoods, including underprivileged children,

“We also organized a food bazaar, artist performances, the final round

for the Spelling Bee contest, a milk-drinking program and other

interactive games which

are fun for the whole family. These programs were created by students of BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug,” said Riza Septama, the Head Committee of HOPE Walk-A-Thon who represented BINUS.

Director of Development and Communication at HOPE Worldwide Indonesia, Ms. Lily Salim, said that the purpose of the collaboration between HOPE Walk-A-Thon and BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug is to raise funds, with a target of Rp 1.5 billion.

“The money will be used to support Centers of HOPE, such as Pelangi Kasih Orphanage, computer training centers and tuberculosis clinics, which are aimed to help children in various areas of Indonesia,” Ms. Lily stated. (YD)

Products from an Inter Disciplinary Units (IDU)

were showcased in the Marketing Lobby BINUS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Simprug from 10 up to 14 October 2011. All Grade 9 students have to prepare a Grade 9 IDU exhibition at the end of the term. Seven subjects joined this program: Indonesian, Mathematics, Science, Drama, Visual Arts, Music, and Technology. These are the memorable moments that were captured by the editorial team.
