BALANCED - MAY

By Nadine Piat-Niski

Of late it seems as though the term ‘work/life balance’ has been used loosely and somewhat to excess. Everyone is talking about it… the question is what are you actively doing to achieve it, and how many of you are successfully living a balanced healthy life full of energy and a zest for living?

It’s really important not to compare yourself to others, the trick is be honest with YOU and to create a life what runs at the perfect pace for your ideal lifestyle. It is very hard to create life balance when you are not sure of what you are striving for. What are the most important areas of your life that are in need of attention - family, social life, community, study, personal development, finances, health, other interests?

Building self-awareness is the first step to making life-balancing choices. It starts with your needs and values for personal success. If you take a moment to step outside the overwhelm of our fast paced lifestyle you will most likely see that there is room for improvement. How important is the need for change, for balance, for more energy, for laughter, for quality time with special people, for more productive working strategies? How long can you keep going the way you are?

Here are some tips to get you started:

Look at your week and write down 1. absolutely everything you do with your time - at work, home, social, phone calls, TV, internet, procrastinating, etc. What do you absolutely 2. need in your life to be your best? Eg. Calmness, consistency, commitment, clarity, affection, to achieve, etc.

What are your core 3. values, and you do honour these values? Eg. Connection, health, adventure, spirituality, knowledge, passion, ethics, integrity, awareness, family, humour, etc.Stop long enough to really think and 4. write down what ‘balance’ looks like to you.Look back over the week and identify 5. where you are wasting time, the areas that are not enhancing your life nor adding real value? Be honest!Use your needs and values as a 6. reference point for your decision-making.Start with a vision and then break it 7. down into small doable steps. Just add or delete something new each week... schedule it into the diary otherwise change is unlikely.Priortise, learn to say ‘NO’, create 8. boundaries, get organized!Stop thinking and talking about it 9. and make it happen! If overwhelmed and stuck and 10. wanting to make changes sooner rather than later then I advise seeking some professional support – find a personal coach or mentor to assist you on your path.

Self-awareness + action + accountability = progressive life balance

As a Personal Coach I am very passionate about conscious living – if you are not sure why you do what you do, and what is and is not working for you, then how on earth can you be in tune, balanced and connected with you and the people around you?

There is no foolproof way to have life balance 24/7 – however if you have life balance in place

most of the time you’re on the right path of living with integrity, self-honour, more joy and increased energy.

The happiest people are those that have their careers in balance with all of the other areas of their life!

Take the step to get it together! Create your ideal reality!

Red Suva Natural Therapies was established in 2005 by Juanita Emmerton, a registered Naturopath, Reiki practitioner and Frequency Specific Microcurrent practitioner. Juanita integrates the principles of natural therapies to develop individualised treatment plans to prevent and alleviate symptoms of a range of everyday health complaints.

Based at 66 Park Road Wooloowin, the Red Suva team consists of a Naturopath, Medical Herbalist, Nutritionist, Reiki Practitioner, Bio-impedence Practitioner, Frequency Specific Microcurrent Practitioner and Acupuncturist, all working together to promote wellness. All therapists are fully accredited and registered within their modality of expertise.

“I formed Red Suva because of my own personal experiences within the natural health industry,” Juanita explained. “I knew that there was a better path to health without necessarily taking lots of supplements and spending lots of money. We wanted to create a clinic with a difference. A place where our clients were comfortable and their support network didn’t just end at the end of their consultation. So, when naming the clinic, we wanted a name that embodied our philosophies as practitioners and it was my husband who actually came up with the name; as it is based on the Red Suva Frangipani flower essence which brings about caring, nurturing and compassion; everything we offer as a clinic.”

“We are firm believers in educating our clients

and so we make sure we update our skills and knowledge to give our clients the most recent evidence-based research and clinical expertise in health conditions,” Juanita said.

Red Suva helps chronic pain sufferers using ‘Frequency Specific Microcurrent Therapy’. It is non-invasive and clinically proven to promote healing and fast recovery from injury, to reduce the effects of long-term pain.

“It is our intention at Red Suva to provide clients with the tools they need to rebuild and maintain good health,” Juanita said. “Only they can make the necessary changes to achieve this, but we will be there each step of the way to guide clients through to optimal health.”

On their initial visit, clients receive an overall assessment, and are given information and a take home questionnaire so that the correct research, treatment strategy and timeline can be developed.

“Our advice to people who are in need of healing in any aspect of their physical and emotional health is to come and see us.”

Talk to Juanita about how Red Suva can help you achieve optimal health. Phone 3357 6295.

A lot of the time when we think of inflammation, we visualise sports injuries or a sore back, but very rarely do we associate inflammation with other conditions as such as cardiovascular disease (where it is sometimes referred to as the silent killer), irritable bowel, acne, allergies, obesity and diabetes to name just a few.

Our diets are highly responsible for mediating inflammation, especially those diets with a high consumption of coffee, cigarettes, alcohol, fast-foods and confectionary. Sugar for example is pro-inflammatory. That is, it causes inflammation in the body.

So, what can we do and how can we change? Whilst pharmaceutical anti-inflammatories serve an important purpose and can be immensely effective in alleviating pain and

inflammation, many, if not most, of these drugs can produce undesirable side-effects.

Fortunately, there are other options. Through diet for example, herbs such as turmeric and ginger have powerful anti-inflammatory effects, whilst quercetin, found in apples and red onions, is particularly useful in the treatment of inflammatory conditions associated with allergic reactions.

Omega-3 essential fatty acids provide excellent long term anti-inflammatory support, especially for cardiovascular and arthritic complaints.

It is always best to consult with a qualified practitioner before embarking on what is sometimes an expensive journey of self medicating with natural medicines as what

may help someone you know, might be completely the wrong type of anti-inflammatory for you.

At Red Suva we offer drug-free pain relief options so call us today on 3357 6295.

(ARA) - Losing weight is challenging. In fact, only 28 percent of people vowing to lose weight were successful, according to one study from the United Kingdom. Dedication and a few healthy tricks learned from the pros can be the key to successful weight loss.

Nutritionist, personal trainer and health educator, Cynthia Sass, MPH, RD, believes that traditional diets of low-calorie -- and often low-taste -- foods can leave dieters feeling hungry and unsatisfied.

In her New York Times best-selling book “Flat Belly Diet,” Sass offers several easy guidelines to help you stick to your weight-loss goals to become healthier and happier.

Sass Up Water

According to Sass, drinking plenty of water is an essential part of an everyday diet. “Many people find having eight glasses a day can be a challenge when less healthy options such as soda and sugary juices are easily available,” she says. Sass recommends her signature recipe called “Sassy Water” which infuses fresh ginger root, cucumbers, lemons and mint leaves into water. “We call it ‘Sassy’ because it’s a heck of a lot perkier than plain old water and the ingredients help calm and soothe your digestive system.”

Eating on the Go

Sass suggests eating several small meals and snacks throughout the day to regulate the body’s metabolism and stop the hunger pangs. “I really like Laughing Cow Mini Babybel cheeses, because they offer delicious, portable protein to help control food cravings and keep you feeling fuller longer,” she says. “Also, each serving is individually wrapped so weight-conscious

individuals know how much food they are getting without worrying about portion control.”

Get Moving

“Walking not only burns calories, it can also boost your mood,” says Sass. “Moderate-to-vigorous walking causes your brain to release hormones which are shown to improve your mood and raise your spirits, which can last for several hours.” Sass recommends finding ways to incorporate exercise into your daily routines, like a quick five-minute walk around your office after lunch.

Snack the Right Way

“Most people who work outside of the home eat lunch between noon and 1 p.m., but don’t make dinner until after 6 p.m., therefore, their hunger signals are in full-swing well before they eat their last meal for the day,” says Sass. “The fix is to plan your snack between lunch and dinner around 3 or 4 p.m.” While at the office, she suggests Laughing Cow Light cheese wedges as a great snack. “I like to pair it with sliced apple wedges and a few tablespoons of nuts for a tasty, filling, calorie-controlled way to snack.”

Don’t go it alone

Research shows that dieters, especially women, who share their resolutions with friends, family and coworkers are more successful at following their weight-loss goals. “People who maintain personal and community connections have better health than those who don’t,” says Sass.

Australians today are exposed to more chemicals than ever before. Thousands of tonnes of toxic gases are released into inner city Brisbane air – the air we breathe – every year. We drink chemicals in our water supply and we clean our homes with chemicals. We wash our bodies and our children’s bodies in chemicals, we even eat them in our food. What many people do not realise is that our body is not equipped to deal with these toxic chemicals. Many of these chemicals have demonstrated adverse affects on health, including cancer, infertility, obesity and mental health problems.

Living in a major city we cannot completely avoid chemical exposure, but there are some things we can do to reduce the risk posed to our health.

1. Reduce your exposure:

Change your cleaning products to •those with only natural, plant based ingredients;

Change your personal care products, •cosmetics and beauty care

products to those with only natural, plant-based

ingredients;

Reduce processed, packaged foods •in your diet and eat certified organic fruits and vegetables;

Purchase a good quality water •filtration system.

2. Enhance your body’s ability to excrete toxins:

See a Naturopath to undertake •a comprehensive detoxification program at least once per year. Detoxification helps your body to eliminate toxins that have accumulated over time. This can also enhance your energy levels, increase the effectiveness of weight loss programs, resolve digestive symptoms and improve stress tolerance.

By making these changes you can dramatically reduce your chemical exposure. You’ll be happier and healthier too!

Nutriente Organic Wholefoods stocks a huge range of natural, chemical-free and organic products, so you can replace your chemical cleaning products, skin care and personal care products. You can even buy certified organic fruits and vegetables, now fresh in-store every Monday and Thursday. Book an appointment to get started on your detoxification program today!

Understand its a lifestyle change • not just 1 to 2 months of hard exer-cise and deprivation of treats. Be mentally prepared and WANT to • succeed and live a healthier longer life. Stop and think about what you put into your mouth and how much, daily and make sure you do some sort of physical activity daily. Exercise doesnt have to mean gyms • and long runs, play sport, go to the park, kick the ball around, get up and get active

ESTABLISHING A DIFFERENT

FITNESS EXPERIENCENestled away from the hustle and bustle that most of us encounter on an everyday basis, entering the driveway at Healthworks Hendra you are transported to a different fitness experience by this now established club in the heart of one of Brisbane’s most admired suburbs.

Healthworks Hendra is nestled amongst beautifully landscaped gardens, adorned by a picturesque 25 metre heated pool and three fully lit tennis courts. The Club has a calm, relaxed and non-intimidating environment, designed to create an attractive and pleasant atmosphere for clients.

Inside the facilities themselves you will find trainers consulting with clients on their individual fitness needs, members using the state of the art weight equipment in a relaxed atmosphere free of the hardened gym junkies with bulging biceps and individuals enjoying a serene swim in the outdoor heated pool or slogging it out with friends on the elite tennis facilities.

Beyond this, Healthworks Hendra has fitness and exercise classes including Les Mills, aqua aerobics, yoga, RPM, Pilates, Boxing, a crèche and much more, catering to all fitness levels and requirements.

But the facilities don’t stop there; Mauro Raimondi the club’s owner has even bigger plans for Healthworks Hendra, which has already established a strong following among the local community, Mauro plans to include a cafe in the coming year and introduce treatment rooms

with beauty services, physio, acupuncture and massage to make the Healthworks Hendra club a lifestyle destination away from the regular fitness centres we are all so use to.

Mauro has just installed new, top-of-the-line cardio equipment, each piece boasting its own television screen and iPod port. Runners and cyclists can now sweat it out with a view of the club’s 25m heated pool while listening to their favourite track.

Mauro’s plans for Healthworks Hendra go beyond this however. “We want the club to be a destination facility for neighbours” he says. “We want it to be a place where families can come on a Saturday morning – the kids can have a swim while dad reads the paper and has a coffee, and mum enjoys some quiet time walking on the treadmill.”

Creating a strong community atmosphere is important for Mauro who explained “We have a strong

commitment to youth and encourage students of local schools to use our facilities through affordable student membership”.

Healthworks Hendra also includes a crèche facility, with Mauro continuing on to say “Healthworks Hendra can help guide people towards their goals in a non-intimidating environment for their family or personal needs”

With established staff, new equipment and exciting developments in the pipeline why not take advantage of Healthworks Hendra’s pristine fitness environment. Talk to a Healthworks Hendra team member to find out about their range of membership options and become part of the Healthworks Hendra fitness community.

As we all know exercising is good for you. After intense training we often find our muscles tight and aching; poor training practices or improper equipment can cause accidents and also lead to injuries. It’s important to have a sufficient warm up incorporating dynamic stretches specific to your training program; and a gentle cool down using static stretching.

Massage is an important aspect of recovery. It can also be a key factor to optimum performance and injury prevention.

Massage is beneficial for the treatment of many conditions including:

spraigns and strains, headaches, shoulder and hip injuries, neck and back pain, muscle tension and general soreness

It also helps increase range of movement.

When injuries occur the best immediate self treatment is the RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression and Elevation) method. This relieves pain, reduces swelling and speeds the healing process.

The next step for the swiftest recovery is to see a remedial massage therapist. They will treat any existing problem areas and help to prevent reoccurrence. If further treatment is required your massage therapist may refer you to a physiotherapist. However if these immediate actions are taken recovery time can be reduced.

NORTHSIDER’S have been flocking to Racecourse Road to try out Grill’d, the healthy burger specialists, with more than 8000 burgers consumed since doors opened in the middle of March.

Grill’d franchisee, Jason Payne, said

locals had been quick to embrace the nutritional, low fat burgers.

“Locals were looking for a healthy alternative for lunch or dinner that was fast, fresh, delicious and affordable,” Jason said.

“The restaurant is already performing exceptionally well and feedback from local residents, businesses and shoppers has been exceedingly positive.”

The contemporary Grill’d menu boasts 20 different 100% beef, chicken, lamb and vegetarian burgers as well as a new pack designed specifically for kids under 7 called the ‘Mini Me’.

The Mini Me includes a mini burger, mini chips, juice, crayons and an activity placemat, all packed into a fun carry box, and represents fantastic value for families at $7.90.

Jason says that unlike other convenience food restaurants, Grill’d takes a holistic approach to nutrition.

“Our burgers perform against the most important criterias of protein, fat, energy,

vitamins and minerals,” Jason said.

“We use lean patties and really fresh ingredients; which challenges and debunks the idea of burgers being low in nutritional value and high in fat.

“Additionally, we offer a gluten-free bun option so allergy sufferers can also enjoy the Grill’d experience.”

Jason, who already runs the Grill’d restaurant in Rosalie, pinpointed Racecourse Road as a prime location for Grill’d.

“Racecourse Road’s lively culture and friendly feel was the perfect match for Grill’d. We’re very excited to join the neighbourhood,” Jason said.

“It’s more than just a great tasting, healthy burger restaurant. We place a huge emphasis on the entire Grill’d experience from fun and friendly staff to the quirky décor and the open, modern kitchen.

“We also strongly believe in being an active member of the communities in which we operate – we’ve employed more than 30 locals to work in the Racecourse Road restaurant and, where possible, our ingredients are sourced locally.”

In addition to the Ascot restaurant, Grill’d also have restaurants at Chermside Shopping Centre, Fortitude Valley, Bulimba, Rosalie and Coolangatta.

Grill’d is located at 134 Racecourse Road, Ascot and is open 7 days for lunch and dinner. For more information phone 3268 7777 or visit www.grilld.com.au.

YMCA Wellness Studio at Bowen Hills’ has set its sight on reaching a goal of 141 new members by April 30.

This is the number of members needed at the studio to enable it to start giving back and contributing to Y-Care (South East Queensland). A high proportion of YMCA membership fees go towards helping the ‘Y’s’ benevolent services throughout Brisbane. These programs provide at risk youth with the opportunity to make a real change in their lives by receiving meals, mentoring or learning certificate levels skills to enter the workforce possibly for the first time.

The YMCA Wellness Studio’s aim is to facilitate the transition to a healthier and happier you. Scott from the YMCA’s ‘Men with Guts’ Program said the holistic approach of smart training, thinking and eating enables you to make fundamental and lasting changes by providing realistic solutions.

“After 3 weeks I had lost about 8kg (91kg to 83kg) and my gut had decreased to the extent that I had to drill another hole in my belt to keep my jeans up.”

The YMCA experience offers a friendly and relaxed atmosphere allowing clients to focus on their goals. Small classes with a qualified personal trainer give clients the attention they deserve at affordable prices.

Jane from the Weight Loss for Women program said, “Wow! I

can hardly believe how far I’ve come in such a short time. I’m fitter and am really enjoying training and being active.”

Every class is made different to maintain interest and an element of fun while you train. The range of classes and times available can be adapted to individual physical requirements and schedules. Clients can tailor a wellness program to accommodate their lifestyle needs.YMCA Wellness programs include:

Men with Guts - An exercise and diet program designed to reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. Two-three 45 min sessions per week

Weight Loss for Women – How to change your life in 12 weeks and maintain it. Two-three 45 min sessions per week.

BROCCOLI SPROUTS THE SUPER FOODBy Deborah Wray

Broccoli is one of the ‘leafy greens’ that are considered to be amongst the most nutritious.

Broccoli Sprouts are even more nutritious than broccoli itself because sprouting any seed increases the nutritional value considerably. So one tablespoon of broccoli sprouts is equal to a large portion of mature broccoli.

Broccoli Sprouts have been well researched internationally in the past years and the following conclusions have been reached. Broccoli Sprouts act as:

Cancer blockers – Prevents and slows down various cancers including breast, prostate, leukemia and melanomas.

Cardio protectors – Decreases inflammation in the heart, arteries and kidneys and also drops blood pressure.

Cataract prevention – It was found that people who ate broccoli sprouts twice a week had a 23% lower risk of cataracts.

Broccoli Sprouts were also found to help in rheumatoid arthritis prevention, assist the immune system, help build stronger bones due to its high calcium and vitamin C content and to prevent ulcers.

The good news is the highly nutritious and beneficial Broccoli Sprout is also very tasty. Broccoli Sprouts are a wonderful addition to any salad, sandwich or as a garnish.

The delicious and nutritious Broccoli Sprout is definitely one of natures super foods and can easily be added to your daily diet. A much better alternative than taking tablets!

You can find certified organic Broccoli Sprouts in your Wray Organic store at Newmarket and

Indooroopilly.

This is a period of self reflection for you so don’t be surprised if you’re not as bubbly as usual. You have excellent communication skills however you might want to discuss the deeper and more philosophical aspects of life rather than party or venture too far from home. Don’t feel bad about this as it gives you a chance to collect your energies and recharge your batteries.

Friendships are strong this month but you may also be bothered by the fact that someone owes you money or a favor and you’re not quite sure how to lean on them. This could be more pronounced after the 7th when you’ll become quite concerned about this situation. You will need to call a spade a spade and stop worrying about other people’s feelings. It may be time to look after No. 1.

It’s time to make a change in your home life and this could be the month when that may happen. You are balancing the old with the new, the possibilities of where you could be and what’s in store for you. After the 15th there may be an opportunity to reinvestigate the issue of moving house or possibly even purchasing something at this stage of your life.

Don’t be afraid to protest especially where you believe moral integrity is in question. You need to be rigorous in your analysis of someone’s behavior just now and by removing this so-called mental and emotional trash from your life you’ll feel immediate sunshine in your life.

The period of the 10th to the 14th is rather enlightening but also spells some good times for you.

An event that you considered trivial could actually blow up into chaos. This might have something to do with burning the candle at both ends, staggering into sunrise at a party or get-together that could cloud your judgment. Don’t let morality get twisted as this could be the cause of your problems. A journey later in the month will be mentally clarifying.

Propaganda, rumors you hear on the grapevine, stabs in the back and other stories that concern your ego may cause you to be more lenient in your attitudes and thus could cause you to lower your conscience “bar”. You must be careful to not let deviate from your principles even though it may be difficult in the process. Disputes with lovers are on the cards after the 27th but Saturn will make sure that your cool approach will keep a lid on things.

You are greedy for love and affection and this could cause all manner of problems from your partner or spouse. Try to reciprocate love and remember that others need affection and demonstrativeness as much as you. A sharing of chores and other responsibilities is a key factor and should also be spotlighted this month, particularly between the 14th and 17th. Get your home affairs in order at this time.

Your life may appear to be an unacceptable saga particularly in your working life. You need to employ the element of humor again to help you get through this rather harrowing period. Friends may disappear and you could feel unsupported, especially from the 6th till the 10th. Stand on your own two feet, laugh a little more and of course there’s no harm in educating yourself to develop your skill sets. That can’t hurt your employment prospects.

You have to make a heroic entrance this month if you’re going to retrieve the shattered pieces of a project or workplace situation. Your lectures may be rather abrasive to the ears of others but you have to trust that what you have to say is the way forward. Others will feel handicapped by your insights but you have to stir the inspiration and energy in those around you to get things done. Exert power between the 21st and the 24th if family members are trying to twist you around their little finger.

If you’re feeling tired you need more protein in your diet, in order to rejuvenate yourself to handle the circumstances in your life. Have the desire but not perhaps the drive to achieve your objectives in the short term? This all has to do with diet, exercise and a positive mental attitude. You can make headway in these matters in the first week of the month if you put your mind to it. Don’t be afraid to commit to an exercise regime even if it’s going to bite into your savings.

Follow the advice of the Captain this month as the treasure trove is the end result of tethering yourself to someone in the know. You need a comprehensive framework to hatch your ideas - and this involves teamwork with those who may not always be your best and favorite choice. But going it alone will be shaky and complicated. Speak less and listen to the advice others offer. A breakthrough in communication around the 4th sets the trend for a positive month.

Be careful that Paradise isn’t a little overpriced this month Pisces. You’re overoptimistic and perhaps a little gullible when someone is doing a sales job on you. You need to be firm in your responses and ask the appropriate questions and this is particularly relevant to any sort of holiday, travel or big-ticket item that is going to cost you dearly if you make a wrong move. The period of the 8th to the 15th could see you spending more than you earn. Tighten your belt.

As the nights get a little cooler and winter fashion is emerging in to shops it’s time to reassess the beauty regime and overall look, below are my five main tips for getting the most out of your look in time for winter.

Moisturise1. You may need to get a slightly

richer moisturiser for winter as naturally as the climate becomes cooler it also becomes dryer which is exactly what happens to your skins. If you keep up that moisture you skin will hold a lovely natural glow all year round.

Look after your lips2. Chapped lips are not a good look

they can also be painful and irritating, by looking after your lips constantly with a hydrating protecting balm such as pawpaw ointment, chapping is less likely to occur.

Exfoliating 3. is always important

but more so in the cooler months as the skin generally gets so dry! By exfoliating often the moisturiser is going work a lot harder for you and the natural glow is easier to attain.

Generally skin tone4. becomes a little lighter during

Autumn and Winter so going down a shade in your foundation is sometimes necessary to avoid that dark face pale body look.

Deeper shades of eye and lip5. colours really come to the fore

with rich plums and deep berry tones being the colour palettes of choice. Remember if your eyes are dark lips should be plan and vice versa. Too much is sometimes just too much. Stick to these simple tips and Winter will be like a wonderland with gorgeous skin and flawless makeup.
