Game #1 ChirpsBALL STATE-INDIANA CONNECTIONS• Bill Lynch coached both teams – Ball State, 1995-2002; Indiana, 2007-10.• Ball State defensive coordinator David Elson (assistant, 2010), offensive line coah Colin John-son (GA/Quality Control, 2008-10) and running backs coach Kevin Lynch (Quality Control, 2009) all coached at Indiana.• Ball State CB Isaac James is a graduate transfer from Indiana … James intercepted QB Drew Plitt on the final play of last year’s game in Bloomington.

LOTS OF EXPERIENCE ON ROSTER• Ball State has 17 returning position starters on the roster, one of the top numbers in nation. 18 – Hawai’i (9 offense, 9 defense) 18 – Indiana (9 offense, 9 defense) 18 – Texas State (8 offense, 10 defense) 17 – Appalachian St. (10 offense, 7 defense) 17 – Ball State (8 offense, 9 defense) 17 – BYU (9 offense, 8 defense) 17 – Illinois (7 offense, 10 defense) 17 – Michigan State (9 offense, 8 defense) 17 – Oregon (10 offense, 7 defense) 17 – SMU (8 offense, 9 defense) 17 – UCLA (8 offense, 9 defense)

LOOKING TO GO BOWLING• Ball State aims to return to the bowl scene this fall. The Cardinals went to the Beef ‘O’ Brady’s Bowl St. Petersburg following the 2012 season and the GoDaddy Bowl after the 2013 campaign. However, Ball State fell short of bowl eligibility each of the last five seasons.

BALL STATE IN THE NFL• Two former Cardinals are on NFL rosters as preseason camps wind down. They are WR Willie Snead (Baltimore Ravens) and WR Jordan Williams-Lambert (Chicago Bears). Snead is in his fifth season on an active NFL roster and second with the Ravens. Williams-Lambert was picked up by the Bears this winter after earning the Canadian Football League’s West Division Most Outstanding Rookie Award with the Saskatchewan Roughriders last year.

INDOOR PRACTICE FACILITY BECOMING A REALITY• In early May, the Ball State University Board of Trustees approved plans to build the Scheu-mann Family Indoor Practice Facility. The 84,000 square-foot facility will feature a field-turf sur-face measuring 360’ x 160’ and regulation-sized competition field with a ceiling height of 65’. Retractable netting, batting cages and storage will provide the necessary amenities for teams to conduct training. The anticipated opening date for the $15-million building is Summer 2021.

NEW FACES ON THE SIDELINE• The Ball State coaching staff welcomed three new faces this offseason in offensive line coach Colin Johnson, co-defensive coordinator and inside linebackers coach Tyler Stockton, and defensive backs coach Mike Dietzel. Johnson was a three-year starter at center for the Cardinals in the early 2000s before getting into coaching. Stockton reunites with BSU de-fensive coordinator David Elson, having worked under him at Western Illinois. Dietzel brings a wealth of experience in the league with stops at three other MAC schools, including the past four years at Central Michigan. CONGRATS GRADUATES!• Ball State has seven players on its 2019 roster who have already earned a collegiate degree: RB Walter Fletcher, CB Isaac James, OL Danny Pinter, OL Andrew Poenitsch, OL Zac Ricketts, TE Kyle Schrank and ILB Jacob White. Fletcher and James are graduate transfers. Fletcher was a Division II All-American at Edin-boro University. James earned his undergradu-ate degree from Indiana.

CARDINALS TAKE FLIGHT IN 2018• Ball State led the Mid-American Conference in passing yards per game (254.2) in 2018. The Cardinals threw for a league season-high 446 yards in the win over Kent State on Sept. 29. In the win over Western Michigan on Nov. 13, Ball State completed 81.5 percent of its throws (22-of-27), the best mark in a MAC game last year.

KEEP AN EYE OUT• Ball State had two players named to pre-season watch lists during the week of July 14. Senior Riley Miller was tabbed to the watch list for the Biletnikoff Award, given annually to the nation’s top receiver. Miller, a former walk-on, started every game as a junior and earned Ball State’s John Magnabosco Award as the team’s MVP. Senior Andrew Poenitsch was selected as a candidate for the Rimington Trophy, awarded to the nation’s most outstanding center, for the second year in a row. Poenitsch will move back to center full-time this year after sliding over to left tackle for much of last season to replace an injured Kaleb Slaven.

@BSUCoachNeu

Ball State University welcomed back one of its own as Mike Neu was named the head coach for the Cardinal football program in January of 2016. Neu played collegiate football at Ball State where he was named 1993 Mid-American Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Neu has more than 15 years of coaching experience with stops in the National Football League (NFL), Division I FBS football and the arena leagues.

Several positives have come in the past three years under Neu’s guidance that have set the foundation for future Ball State teams to build upon. The Cardinals led the Mid-American Conference in pass offense last fall, highlighted by a league season-high 446 yards through the air in the win over Kent State. Defensive end An-thony Winbush tied the Ball State career sacks record (25) in 2017 and was among the nation’s leaders in sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles that year. Meanwhile, wide receiver Justin Hall led all true freshmen in receptions in 2017 and was named to ESPN.com’s Freshman All-America team.

Thirteen Cardinals have come away with All-MAC accolades under Neu, including former walk-on Riley Miller who earned second team honors in 2018 after ranking among the top five players in the MAC in receptions and receiving yards. Ball State has also been one of the most disciplined teams in the nation with Neu as coach, ranking fifth in fewest penalties in 2016 and ninth in 2017.

Before returning to Ball State, Neu served two seasons as the quarterbacks coach for the NFL’s New Orleans Saints. In 2014 under Neu’s guidance, quarterback Drew Brees was selected to his franchise-record eighth Pro Bowl as a Saint. Brees led the league in completions (456), tied for first in passing yardage (4,952), ranked second in completion percentage (69.2) and tied for fifth in touchdown passes (33). In 2015, Brees once again led the NFL in passing yardage (4,870) while ranking second in completion percentage (68.3) and completions (428).

Neu, a native of Indianapolis, Indiana, started 38-of-41 games at quarterback in his four seasons at Ball State (1990-93). He was honored with the MAC’s Vern Smith Award as the league’s most valuable player and the MAC

Offensive Player of the Year award as a senior. That year, Neu and the Cardinals went 8-3-1 overall and 7-0-1 in league action to capture the MAC championship. In one of his greatest games as a collegiate quarterback, Neu threw for a Ball State record 469 yards and completed 28-of-40 passes against Toledo in 1993 to help the Cardinals rally from a 30-3 deficit and record the largest comeback in Ball State history, a 31-30 Homecoming victory.

Neu played professionally in the Canadian Football League and Arena Football League (AFL) from 1995-97 before beginning his coach-ing career in 1998 with the AFL’s Nashville Kats. In 2000, Neu was named head coach for the first time as he took over the Arena Football 2’s (AF2) Augusta Stallions. He led that organization to a conference title in 2000 with a 14-4 record and was named the AF2 Coach of the Year.

In 2001 and 2002, Neu worked with the AFL’s Carolina Cobras. He served as the of-fensive coordinator in 2001 and was promoted to head coach in 2002. During his stint as head coach, Neu led the team to the quarterfinals of the AFL playoffs, including the team’s first-ever playoff win.

Neu then spent four years as head coach of the AFL’s New Orleans VooDoo. There, he compiled a 33-31 record and earned 2004 AFL Coach of the Year honors. During his first season at the helm, Neu led the team to a franchise-best 11-5 record, a division title and a playoff berth.

From 2008-12, Neu worked on the New Orleans Saints’ player personnel staff. He then spent the 2012 and 2013 seasons with Tulane as the quarterbacks coach. In 2013, Neu helped guide Tulane to a 7-6 overall record and its first postseason appearance in 11 years – the 2013 R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl.

Neu received his bachelor’s degree in sport administration from Ball State in 1994 and served as a graduate assistant coach for the Cardinals during the 1994 season. He was in-ducted into the Ball State Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

Neu and his wife, Charmin, have a daughter, Graycen (17), and two sons, Carson (16) and Chase (8).

Aug.30,2018–ScheumannStadium(9,801)

Recap With an emphatic 42-6 victory in the season

opener, the Ball State Cardinals officially put a dis-appointing 2017 season behind them. In so doing, they gave the Scheumann Stadium crowd a glimpse of what a healthy offense and a revamped defense could look like this fall.

Ball State piled up a school-record 652 yards, topping a mark set more than 40 years ago, and came within 12 seconds of pitching its first shutout in more than a decade.

The Cardinals always expected to boast a wealth of playmakers this season, and that was certainly on full display Thursday. The three-headed monster of James Gilbert, Malik Dunner and Caleb Huntley all contributed more than 70 yards from scrimmage out of the backfield. Ten BSU players caught passes, including true freshman Yo’Heinz Tyler who hauled in two second-half touchdowns on the first two receptions of his college career.

Gilbert and quarterback Riley Neal showed no rust in their return to the field after missing the final nine games of last season to injury. Neal threw two touchdowns and ran for another, completing 23 of 30 passes for 259 yards. Gilbert, an All-MAC First Teamer two years ago, ran for 100 yards and a score on 14 carries.

Game #2 Ball State . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 16 at No. 8 Notre Dame . . . . . . . . . 24

Sept.8,2018–NotreDameStadium(77,622)

RecapIt wasn’t exactly the start the Ball State football

team was looking for on the road against the No. 8 team in the country.

Notre Dame’s five-play, 74-yard drive in less than two minutes was like an early jab to the nose. But the Cardinals took it and fought back with a series of body blows, driving 85 yards in 19 plays. While the drive resulted only in a field goal, it seemed to show this game wouldn’t be as one-sided as the pre-game projections or the opening Notre Dame drive suggested.

Ball State created havoc for the Notre Dame offense throughout the day, picking off quarter-back Brandon Wimbush three times. The Cardinals controlled the clock and held their own in their first-ever trip to Notre Dame Stadium despite com-ing up on the short end, 24-16.

BSU racked up 10 tackles for loss, sacked Wimbush four times and hurried him on four other occasions. The pressure led directly two of the interceptions – picks by Josh Miller in the first half and Ray Wilborn in the second. Antonio Phillips added his first career interception for the other takeaway.

Jacob White had nine tackles and got into the backfield twice. Jaylin Thomas set a career high with nine stops of his own.

Sept.15,2018–MemorialStadium(40,240)

RecapThe Ball State football team struggled to sustain

drives and to contain a balanced Indiana attack Saturday in a 38-10 loss at Memorial Stadium.

The Cardinals ran for 204 yards, led by James Gilbert’s 89, but threw for only 143. Indiana topped the 200-yard mark on the ground and through the air.

Third-down conversions were the name of the game for Ball State, offensively. The Cardinals con-verted their first one of the day and didn’t make an-other one until quarterback Riley Neal scrambled to get to the sticks with 3:00 left in the third quarter.

Both of those first downs led to scores -- the first one a Morgan Hagee field goal and the second a Gilbert touchdown run. But the Cardinals finished the day 4-for-14 (28.6 percent) on third-down op-portunities.

Ball State, which largely bottled up the run game last week at No. 8 Notre Dame, saw Indiana rush for 255 yards and 5.8 yards per carry. Scott finished the game with 114 yards. And after sacking Notre Dame quarterback Brandon Wimbush four times a week ago, BSU could not get to the Hoosier quarterbacks, who combined to complete 24 of 32 passes.

RecapSteven Duncan came off the bench to guide

three second-half touchdown drives and push WKU over the top in a tight 28-20 game over the Ball State football team at Scheumann Stadium.

Ball State was penalized 10 times for 120 yards on the afternoon and had several other holding penalties declined in long down-and-distance situ-ations. Six times the Cardinals found themselves needing at least 18 yards to pick up a first down. For its part, WKU was penalized 11 times for 102 yards.

Impressively, Riley Neal managed to convert three of those behind-the-chains situations into first downs in the second half, including a fourth-and-18 in the final minute that gave the Cardinals life. He found Riley Miller down the sideline for 34 yards, moving Ball State into WKU territory with 18 seconds to play.

Neal had time for three shots into the endzone, but all three were broken up, including a Hail Mary as time expired.

Duncan completed 12-of-16 passes for 94 yards and two touchdowns and also ran for 55 yards on six carries in his half of play. He found Mik’Quan Deane for two of those touchdowns, including the final go-ahead score with 4:41 to play.

Sept.29,2018–ScheumannStadium(9,367)

RecapThe Ball State football team was in attack mode

against Kent State, and it started from the word go. Riley Neal took the first snap from scrimmage

and hit Riley Miller 52 yards down the sideline. That proved to be just the beginning.

The Cardinals unleashed the downfield passing game more than they had in a long time en route to a 52-24 victory behind career days from both of the former Yorktown High School teammates.

The Riley duo hooked up 11 times for 208 yards, as Miller became the first Cardinal to reach the 200-yard receiving mark since Willie Snead in 2012, also against Kent State. Neal recorded just the seventh 400-yard passing game in program history, completing 30 of 50 passes for a personal-high 402 yards and accounting for five total touchdowns.

Ball State did most of its damage through the air, though James Gilbert scored twice on the ground in the first half.

Oct.6,2018–ScheumannStadium(7,159)

RecapRay Wilborn’s fourth-quarter interception gave

the Ball State football team life Saturday, but the Cardinals’ potential game-tying drive ended with a pass batted down in the end zone as time expired.

Northern Illinois held on for a 24-16 win to remain unbeaten in Mid-American Conference play, while the Cardinals suffered their first league setback.

Through three quarters, the Huskies held the Cardinals to just three Morgan Hagee field goals as they built a 21-9 lead. Then Wilborn stepped in front of a Marcus Childers pass at midfield and took it all the way to the NIU 6-yard line.

James Gilbert found an opening on the next play for the Cardinals’ lone touchdown of the afternoon, cutting the deficit to 21-16.

After the Huskies answered with a field goal, Ball State moved the ball into NIU territory twice in the final six minutes. The first of those drives ended when Gilbert was stuffed on a fourth-and-one, and the second when Riley Neal’s heave from 35 yards out fell to the ground on the final play.

Ball State ran 24 more plays than the Huskies (96 to 72) and outgained them 391-370. The Cardinals sacked Childers three times and held him to 143 yards passing.

The Cardinals moved the ball to at least midfield on 11 of their 12 possessions but only got into the red zone twice.

Oct.13,2018–Kelly/ShortsStadium(10,255)

RecapThe Ball State football team scored on its final

three possessions and held Central Michigan to three second-half points in a 24-23 win.

Morgan Hagee connected on the game-winning field goal in the final minute. Quarterback Riley Neal accounted for all three Cardinals touchdowns as Ball State won for the fifth time in its past six trips to Mount Pleasant.

Three times in the first six games this season, Ball State found itself trailing by one score on its final possession. And three times, the Cardinals were unable to produce points.

This time was different. Down 23-21 and facing a third-and-14 with less than four minutes to play, the Cardinals remained composed. Neal hit Justin Hall for 13 yards, and then James Gilbert converted a fourth-and-short to keep the drive alive.

The Cardinals methodically worked the ball 56 yards over 12 plays, aided by a roughing the passer penalty that negated a CMU interception. Ball State maneuvered the ball to the 19-yard line before Hagee came on and drilled a 36-yarder with 47 seconds left.

CMU had one final chance near midfield, but Jaylin Thomas corralled CMU QB Tommy Lazzaro and brought him to the ground as time expired.

Oct.20,2018–ScheumannStadium(14,022)

RecapEastern Michigan turned short fields and Ball

State turnovers into first-half touchdowns, jumping on the Cardinals early en route to a 42-20 win.

The Eagles scored three times in the first half, starting each of those three drives in Ball State territory, to build a 21-6 lead at the break on the way to spoiling the Cardinals’ Homecoming. Winds gusted around 40 miles per hour on a blustery day at Scheumann Stadium.

Riley Neal threw a touchdown to Riley Miller in the first half and ran for another in the second. He hit Justin Hall 10 times for 81 yards. But the Cardinals struggled to sustain drives for much of the afternoon.

Will Jones provided perhaps the biggest highlight of the day for Ball State in the final minutes. He ran 80 yards for a touchdown – the team’s longest play of the season – on the Cardinals’ final possession.

Eastern Michigan quarterback Tyler Wiegers hit three different receivers for touchdowns and also ran for one. He finished the game 22-of-28 through the air for 257 yards.

EMU started three first-half drives on the Ball State half of the 50, cashing in for TDs after an in-terception, a fumble and a BSU punt into the wind.

way to a 52-14 victory over Ball State in Mid-Ameri-can Conference football action at Peden Stadium.

Ball State struck first with a Riley Neal to Riley Miller touchdown pass after a Christian Albright interception set the offense up near midfield. But the Bobcats kept the Cardinals from scoring again until the final three minutes.

A.J. Ouellette (135 yards) and Maleek Irons (102) both surpassed the 100-yard mark on the ground for Ohio. Starting quarterback Nathan Rourke add-ed 77 yards of his own as he successfully directed a heavy option attack. All three players ran for two touchdowns, while Rourke also threw one.

James Gilbert led Ball State with 52 yards on nine carries, while Justin Hall caught four passes for 42 yards. Neal completed 7 of 15 passes and exited late in the second quarter when he was banged up. Drew Plitt finished the game at quarterback and ran for a late touchdown after engineering a 75-yard drive.

RecapThe positive plays were there for the Ball State

football team Wednesday night at Toledo. There were the five interceptions – the most

picks for the Cardinals in 48 years. There was Drew Plitt looking comfortable and throwing for a career-high 340 yards, as he started in place of the injured Riley Neal. There was Riley Miller going over 100 yards receiving and catching a touchdown for the fifth time in six games.

But a frantic opening seven-plus minutes left BSU with a 21-0 deficit that was too much to overcome.

The Cardinals had the ball in Toledo territory on seven of their final eight possessions but were only able to score on one of them – a Malik Dunner touchdown run late in the third quarter.

Ball State intercepted Toledo quarterback Eli Peters four times and also picked off a pass thrown by UT receiver Desmond Phillips. Brandon Martin, Antonio Phillips, Josh Miller, Bryce Cosby and Amechi Uzodinma all picked off passes. It was the most interceptions for the Cardinals since picking off Evansville a school-record six times in 1970.

Plitt completed 29 of 47 passes in his first start of the year. He found Justin Hall 10 times for 82 yards and Miller five times for 101.

Nov.13,2018–ScheumannStadium(5,503)

Recap Ball State held off Western Michigan’s two-point

attempt in the first overtime to claim a 42-41 win over the Broncos in Tuesday night #MACtion.

This was Ball State’s first overtime game since knocking off the same WMU squad in 2012.

The Cardinals got first crack with the ball in over-time and utilized a pair of creative plays to find the end zone. A reverse pass from WR Corey Lacanaria to a wide-open Riley Miller on the first play moved the ball down to the one-yard line. Two plays later, QB Drew Plitt completed a jump pass to TE Kyle Schrank for the TD.

WMU needed five plays to find the end zone on its possession. QB Kaleb Eleby ran the ball in from one yard out to bring the Broncos within one point, 42-41. The Broncos elected to go for two points and the win. However, LB Jimmy Daw and S Bryce Cosby broke through the middle of the line and tripped up RB LeVante Bellamy well short of the goal line.

Nov.20,2018–YagerStadium(17,639)

Recap Through most of the first half, Ball State was

clicking on offense and making plays on defense, building a two touchdown lead. Then it all shifted. Just 13 minutes of game time later, BSU found itself two touchdowns behind, and Miami went on to score 35 unanswered points.

Miami ran for 364 yards, including 207 for Alonzo Smith who scored three times. The Red-Hawks threw only two passes in the second half, pounding out their yardage on the ground.

Ball State was in position to take a lead into the half, but the momentum swung quickly in Miami’s direction. On a fourth down with 3:39 showing on the first-half clock, the RedHawks needed 1 yard to keep their drive alive. Instead, they got 56. Smith busted out of a tackle and broke free down the side-lines for a score, changing the feel of the game.

Miami continued to pound away after the half. Smith got loose for another long touchdown, this one a 47-yarder, and Ragland scored on a quar-terback sneak, as the RedHawks took a 35-21 lead through three quarters.

Riley Miller finished with five receptions for 71 yards while catching a touchdown for the seventh time in the past eight games.
