Commodore’s Report

The past 12 months have been some of the most challenging for the BSC for many years through the

impact of unexpected work required on our deck and launching ramps and, of course, COVID 19.

As we prepare this report of the 2019/2020 year we are once again preparing for this year's Balmain

Regatta but it is likely it will be a far cry from the community party we put on to mark the event's 170th

Anniversary last year.

The 2020 Regatta will most likely be an on water only event without the usual '"Bar, band, BBQ"

celebration of recent times, but interest in the sailing is still extremely high.

As the club has dealt with the impact of COVID 19 and the inevitable restrictions on our on shore

socialising, our membership and participation in our racing has been extremely strong, a reflection both

of the drive of our club manager, Dave

Stenhouse, to find ways to keep us racing

and of the amazing role sailing plays in our

lives. Dave has also stepped up the

frequency of email and sms

communications to members to keep us

all connected.

As the COVID emergency hit. Dave had a

battle to get our casual Friday races back

on the water, but his advocacy has paid off

with the size of the Friday fleet at

unprecedented levels and we have also

enjoyed higher than normal entries from

other clubs in several of our other races

and series.

Our core DNA is our love of sailing and it is

worth noting that during the last 12

months we ran 206 individual starts and

that in total, including the regatta, more

than 140 individual yachts and dinghies sailed with us. And of course those stats mean another huge

vote of thanks to our starters Kathie Myers, Sue Fletcher, Marilyn Richardson and Janene Porter.

Onshore, the next stage of our planned major works – repairs and renewal of our deck and dinghy

launching facilities - has become a serious challenge as the floating ramp infrastructure suffered impacts

from age, weather and white ants meaning it had to be demolished and removed ahead of our intended

schedule.

At the same time, preparation to

repair both the piers and decking

of the flat deck area is well

advanced but this work, and the

construction and positioning of a

new floating deck for dinghy

launching, is a major undertaking.

The work involved is complex and

involves obtaining planning

permission and construction

permission which means it won't

happen as quickly as we would like. Thanks to the members of the dinghy fleet for their patience in

dealing with less than perfect launch and retrieval arrangements in the meantime.

But as you know from our recent improvements to our interior facilities, we are up for this challenge and

I'm deeply grateful to the generous club members who have already made considerable financial

commitments to help us complete these new projects.

Director Ray Miller is tireless in pursuing public grants and funding for the work required to keep the

club standing, but this is not easy and we can expect to do some serious fund raising in coming months.

The impact of the COVID 19 crisis has been felt in income from hall hire, bar and food takings but our

membership, storage and sailing revenue are all strong and again the club is indebted to you for your

ongoing support, especially to those who responded so quickly to the call to promptly renew their

membership. This made a real difference and please, if you know someone who should be a member,

especially among our sailing crews, please remind them to sign up.

Promising young skipper Tommy Richardson …

Under the careful stewardship of Secretary Colin Grove and Treasurer Ed Tacey, the club's financial

situation is in good shape and Vice Commodore Alan Gregory has worked closely with Dave Stenhouse

to keep our racing fair, well organised, and most importantly great fun.

Alan is also working to renew our sailing school, a challenge which also presents unique challenges in

our current, constrained environment.

I am also grateful to Director Conrad Johnston who, fresh from designing and overseeing our internal

renovation, is bringing his design expertise to the deck and ramp projects.

Conrad is also collaborating with Director Mike West to design and install a new trophy cabinet which

along with the painting of the club's logo by artist Roger Robinson will give the entrance to the club a

dramatic lift.

I also want to thank Kathryn Underhill who is stepping down from the committee this year.

Finally some personal notes. During the last year two of our stalwart club members, life member Doug

Clark, and Richard 'Reg' Huybers passed away. The club benefited greatly from their contributions over

many years and they are sorely missed.

But there were also some romantic milestones as well with the marriages of Simon Oliver and Chantelle

Hodgson and Damian Barker and Dee Pollett and the recent engagement of Mike West and Jesse Medd -

best wishes to all of you.

Vice Commodore’s Report

The impacts of the Covid-19

pandemic resulted in a somewhat

abnormal racing season, with 15

race days missed through the

cessation of racing from late

March to early June. Despite this,

2019/20 has been a successful and

busy season. We have conducted a

total of eight yacht and five dinghy

series, over 58 race days. Broken

down by divisions and including

the Balmain Regatta, this accounts for 166 yachts races and 40 dinghy races across the year, with a total

of 143 competing boats.

The BSC pre and post-Christmas summer twilight series were very successful with regular fleets of over

40 yachts and 12 dinghies through the full series. The combined clubs West Harbour Spring, Summer

and Winter Yacht Series continue to be successful, attracting fleet sizes equivalent or larger than many

of the series run by other clubs in Sydney Harbour or Pittwater.

The 2019 Friday Afternoon Series 2 was cancelled due to Covid-19. Once restrictions were eased, the

fleet sizes for 2019 Series 3 and 2020 Series 1 have increased significantly, reflecting an obvious latent

demand to go racing. Regular fleets of 20 yachts have been racing through the winter months, despite

light winds. These have included yachts from BSC as well as entries from our West Harbour partner

clubs.

While post-twilight social activities filled the club to capacity, Covid-19 social distancing regulations and

community transmission cautiousness have significantly reduced post-race social gatherings through the

winter months.

A notable result of a BSC boat competing in other Regattas and Series was Min River winning the CYCA

2019-20 JPK Pacific Two-Handed Series, a fantastic result for Jiang Lin and Joris DeCarlan. Min River and

Odyssey both competed at the 2019 Hamilton Island Race Week. Despite some high race placings,

including one race win by Odyssey, they achieved mid fleet 8th and 9th places respectively in their very

competitive division. Odyssey also placed 4th in the CYCA Short Ocean Pointscore Division 2.

2019 was the first time the Pub Challenge / Balmain Regatta was held as a two-day weekend event. The

non-spinnaker Pub Challenge was held on Saturday Oct 26, with 10 pubs racing on BSC yachts down

harbour in challenging windy conditions. The Royal Oak Hotel won the event sailing on Huntress. The

feedback from the pub participants was overwhelmingly positive. They appreciated that BSC was

running a dedicated event, purely focused on fun competition between the local pub crews. A big thanks

to Mike West for pulling the Saturday Pub Challenge concept together, and Dave Stenhouse for the

logistics on the day.

Running a separate Pub Challenge event also allowed boat owners to compete seriously in the Balmain

Regatta with their usual race crews. The Balmain Regatta on the following day was very successful due

to the huge amount of effort put in by the fabulous team of BSC volunteers that make it all happen, both

on-water and off-water. I thank you all for your efforts to make our major race event of the year a great

success.

As we did not get the opportunity this year to run our usual presentation night, I would like to

congratulate all the successful skippers and crews across our various race series and events over the last

year.

On behalf of the BSC committee and members, I would like to warmly thank our Racing Manager, Dave

Stenhouse, and all our Race Officers, Rescue Craft drivers and other race day volunteers for their

enthusiastic contribution to a very successful racing year in rather unusual times. I would also like to

recognise the support and collaboration of Drummoyne (particularly Alex Palmer), Greenwich and

Parramatta River Sailing Clubs for the continued success of the West Harbour Series.

With optimism, let’s hope that the coming year’s race program can proceed in a more normal manner

than what we have experienced this year.

INFRASTRUCTURE

Deck and launching facilities

Long term the club needs a strong and stable flat deck for dinghy rigging and functions and an easily

accessible launching dock for racing dinghies, rowing boats, junior sailors and kayaks.

The sudden deterioration of the sloping ramp off the front of the deck brought forward work to

demolish and remove not only the floating area above the water but many large old piers embedded in

the seabed.

This in turn meant that dinghy launching is not as convenient as it was but eventually the club’s

committee are confident in designing and installing a much better stable, flat area that is purpose built

for the launching and retrieval of small

boats.

Our work on the deck and ramp is divided

into stages with the first piece of work

being repairs to the concrete piers

supporting the flat deck nearest the club

house and we will then successively move

through the piers, bearers and deck surface

to secure and improve them.

At the same time we are working on design,

quotations and seeking approvals for a new

dinghy launching finger that will run in front

of the flat deck and occupy the same space

that the old sloping ramp took up.

Obtaining all the approvals for this is time

consuming and complex but secretary Colin

Grove and director, Conrad Johnson have

this work under way. Dinghy fleet temporary launching arrangements

8

As this report is printed we are very close to beginning the work on the concrete piers under the flat

deck and we intend to use several volunteer working bees to help this part of the project get underway

quickly with as little cost as possible.

The committee hopes the majority of our fundraising efforts can go towards the new launching area,

and again, several club members have already made greatly appreciated contributions to this job.

Sailing School

As this report is printed we are

hopeful of making a fresh start with

the sailing school which has been

through a difficult period.

The club has appointed well-known

sailor Jeremy Sharpe as the school’s

new principal and we now have two

Magic 25s close to being up to speed

to be used for teaching purposes.

The Magics are perfect sailing school

boats and the committee is looking

forward to new momentum for the

school in coming months.

Balmain Regatta 2019

The 2019 Regatta marked 170 years since the event was first held in 1849. To celebrate the milestone

the traditional regatta poster was a reproduction of an historic hand drawn newspaper illustration of

one of the early regatta.

The BSC’s friends at the Inner West Courier then recreated the scene photographically from the same

vantage spot at White Horse Point.

Planning for the 2020 Regatta is under way at the time of the preparing of this report but there is no

certainty about the final form the event will take.

Treasurer’s Report

This year saw mixed results both on paper and in reality for the club as a result of a number of outside

factors coupled with a change to the accounting approach of in kind donations.

Combined income from Membership, Racing and Storage fees ($93,290) is slightly less (-2.5%) than last

year ($95,691). This is despite an increase in membership fees of 10% and reflects a reduction in the

number of financial members of approximately 15 people.

Profits from membership, racing and storage fees ($66,951) were notably less (19%) than the previous

year ($82,896). This was mainly due to the committee agreeing to invest an additional $5k in prizes

(annual presentation and race-by-race), and the $9,648 paid to Australian Sailing (we paid nothing last

year). All other costs (fuel, tender boat drivers, repairs etc) were reduced by comparison.

The previous year's stella contribution to profit from the Sailing School was unfortunately down to

$6,856.00 compared to the previous years’ record profits of $20,151. While key committee members

worked extensively to replace the sailing school principal which was the main factor in this decline. The

turnover of such a key position meant the revenues of the previous year were not able to be recognised

this year. I look forward to recent good news in this area returning this solid plank in the clubs

profitability numbers.

The now very present covid pandemic coupled with some earlier twilight cancellations meant we had

20% less twilights this year compared to last.

In line with this 20 % drop in opportunity bar profits were down by only 19 % at $ $27,987 compared to

$34,830 last year.

Despite the reduced number of sailing events, our Food Sales returned a profit of $4,950 compared to

the loss the previous year of -$3,787. An improvement of more than $8,500. A fantastic effort by Dave to

turn this ‘difficult area to get right’ around from the previous year.

The 2019 Balmain Regatta & Pub Challenge generated an incremental profit of approximately $21,000

when race fees and other bar takings are taken into account.

Page 13: BALMAIN SAILING CLUB · frequency of email and sms communications to members to keep us all connected. As the COVID emergency hit. Dave had a ... best wishes to all of you. Campbell

13

The 2019 BSC Presentation Night and Vivid cruises provided new profit returns this year turning what

was a cost to the club to a new profit centre. With an overall profit from these initiatives landing at over

5K.

Pre and Post cruise Bar Sales across the three events was approximately $1,200.

Hall Hire income was a healthy $26,700, compared to the previous year’s [post-renovation] record of

$22,650, despite the cancellation of several functions in March due to the Coronavirus.

In kind donations from now on will be recorded under operational profit only when they affect

operating cost savings. As a result this year and from now on in kind donations will come under non-

operating income (along with other non-trend donations) and be transferred to the balance sheet as

assets relevant to their purpose.

Additionally this year we include another one off of a charge for annual leave owed to the Club Manager

such that it can be tracked year on year on the balance sheet.

Financial Summary

The Accounts Net Profit is $38 439 compared to $94,678 the previous year and $45,412 the year prior to

that.

Last year’s $94k profit included approximately $25K in-kind value donations and as a result of ongoing

negotiations with Australian Sailing absent fees for that year were deferred until this year amounting to

a current 10K charge.

When one offs like the annual leave charge and in kind donations are removed it makes the 3 past years

net profit adjustments to

19-20 18-19 17-18

Net Profit – minus one offs $53,702.41 $67,090.22 $45,412.07

Out of this year’s cash flow we booked $ 18 450 of balance sheet assets in the form of the 3 air-

conditioning units that now have a rolled up value to the club totaling $ 46 161

Page 14: BALMAIN SAILING CLUB · frequency of email and sms communications to members to keep us all connected. As the COVID emergency hit. Dave had a ... best wishes to all of you. Campbell

14

The committee also took further investment / expenditure decisions to increase race prizes by $5k, and

purchase a 4K Defib machine for member and public safety.

Year on year sailing school profits were down by $15k. As at year end we have just over $83k in the

bank. $40k of which belong to members.
