The need for International Cooperation in the Baltic Sea region

September 25, 13:00

Mr Fredrik Reinfeldt has spent several decades in national and international politics, not least as

Prime Minister of Sweden for eight years. A true friend of international cooperation, he will speak about the importance of cooperation and good leadership.

“After several years of isolationism and nationalism we are getting closer to when this will change. We need

each other and are connected, especially in our region. The Baltic Sea is a common sea. We need to solve environmental challenges, encourage mobility and promote trade. It is better for all.”

New at Baltic Meeting Point:

Exhibition Area for participants

Take the opportunity to take part in our exhibition area at Baltic Meeting

Point 2019! Here you can display information about your city or area,

and share information with the other participants. You can for example bring

a roll-up and brochures to hand out.

September 24-26 at the conference venue

At Baltic Meeting Point we want you to be able to share information about your home city or region, and also to learn about the cities and regions of the other participants. Therefore we will now offer you the opportunity to take part in the BMP Exhibition Area in the same building as the conference itself. In the same area the coffee and refreshments will be served, so it is a great place to reach out. You will be offered a space of approximately 1x2 meters, where you for example can set up one or two rollups and hand out brochures. Please indicate in the sign-up form if you wish to take part in the exhibition area. If you have already signed up for the conference and want to take part in the exhibition, please contact [email protected]

Key Note Speaker: YOU?

We in Karlskrona strongly believe that a conference with leaders will be better if all participants can take part in shaping the agenda. We therefore offer you the opportunity to use one hour of

the agenda to lead a workshop, discussion or creative action where you can share your successes or challenges and get great input from the other participants.

What successes or challenges have you seen in your city? What creative solutions can you share from your home city or municipality? What challenges would you like to discuss with other leaders, who might give you new ideas about solutions? Let us know, and we will do our best to give you up

to one hour!

UNESCO: Risk Management and Disaster Prevention in Cultural Heritages

Ms. Burcu Özdemir, associate programme specialist

Europe and North America Unit UNESCO World Heritage Centre, Paris

On April 15 disaster struck the world famous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. All of us have cultural and natural heritages that need to be protected. Ms Burcu Özdemir from the UNESCO World Heritage Centre in Paris presents their work in Strengthening management Systems and Risk management in World Heritage properties. In view of the significant role of heritage in contributing to social cohesion and sustainable development, the progressive loss of these properties as a result of floods, mudslides, fire, earthquakes, civil unrest and other hazards

has become a major concern. Due to a number of misconceptions, the number of World Heritage properties having developed a proper disaster risk reduction plan in defense of these challenges is low. Firstly, there is a widespread belief that disasters are events beyond human control, against which little can be done. Secondly, heritage managers and policy-makers tend to concentrate their attention and resources on what they perceive to be the real priorities for their properties, including the pressure from development and the gradual weathering of sites as a result of slow, cumulative processes that can be ‘seen’. Finally, the vulnerability of heritage properties to disasters is often only recognized after a catastrophic event has taken place when it is often too late. In reality, however, disasters are the combined product of hazards and vulnerabilities resulting from the complex interaction of numerous interlocking factors, many of which are very much within human control. It is therefore often possible to prevent them, and if not at the very least to considerably reduce their impact, by strengthening the resilience of the assets to be safeguarded. The consequences of a single disaster on cultural and natural properties far outweighs the deterioration caused by long-term, progressive decay and may sometimes lead to their complete obliteration. Thus disaster risks often constitute the most urgent priority that heritage managers should address.
