Future directions for national adpatation in Europe

Agenda-setting issues:

Countries have taken similar pathways in addressing climate change adaptation.

Nevertheless, it is essential to further improve understanding of governance approaches and of implementation processes at national, regional and local levels.

A more standardised basis for monitoring, reporting and evaluation schemes and for appraisal methods would facilitate learning across countries, sectors and public and private actors.

Capacity building and advanced communication methods are key elements to foster adaptation policy at all levels.

Case studies submission

Case studies can be directly submitted to Climate-ADAPT through the on-line function “Share your information” that is accessible on the home-page

However, case study elaboration is not straightforward; ETC-CCA provides its support to case study development:

• An ‘user’ submits the case study either by the on-line form or through the word template ([email protected])

• The ETC/CCA coordinator of case studies development and/or other ETC/CCA thematic experts reviews the case study and provides feedbacks to the submitter

• The user finalises the case study

• EEA approves the off-line version of the case study and publish it on Climate-ADAPT

Overview on user feedback

User groups Summary of feedback

Across all user groups Very valuable content, but not user friendly enough

National level users with

experience in adaptation policy

Climate-ADAPT already supported national/sub-national level

adaptation policy and action

Specific sections very helpful (e. g., country profiles, European level

vulnerability maps)

Information on limits and boundaries of information needed

Climate change, impacts, and vulnerability maps helpful, but high

resolution not necessary

Case studies very helpful, but need for best practice standards

Clarify links to climate services and disaster risk reduction platforms

National level users with less

experience in adaptation policy

Content too complex

Drought/heat related information not sufficiently represented

Information from Eastern and Southern European countries not

sufficiently represented

City/regional level users Information in national languages needed

Scientific community Information not fully up-to-date

Address potential gaps in the database – The process

Database statistical analysis

- Type of data

- Adaptation sectors

- Climate impacts

- Adaptation elements

- Geographic elements

- Year

Definition of gaps categories

1) Missing scientific/practical evidence

2) Incomplete information gathering

3) Information is not eligible to the database criteria

Recommendations for the structured update of the database

Experts interviews

- Presentation of statistical results

- Identification and categorisation of gaps

- Propoasal of actions to overcome the gaps
