Hopefully, as the Cantley with Branton Parish Council Newsletter explains in this month’s Arrow, we may get the crossing we were hoping for on Doncaster Road. There were other ideas discussed in addition to the crossing such as bus shelters on Doncaster Road. Yvonne Woodcock, our Ward Councillor, is investigating all of these possibilities and will report back to the Parish council once more information is available.

We are up and running and all activities are in full swing once again, following the Christmas recess and any cancellations due to the recent snow and general bad weather. We look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at the Hall this coming year, taking advantage of the many activities which run every week. The Zumba and Keep-Fit classes are as popular as ever and run on several weekdays so there should be one to suit everybody who is interested in getting active. Mums and Toddlers on a Wednesday is an excellent group for young babies and toddlers and an excellent way for mums to get together for a chat. Don't forget our Tuesday morning Coffee Club at the Hall. 10am while 11.30am. Everyone is welcome to join us for a chat over tea, coffee and biscuits. We have our weekly Bingo, our Quiz and our Raffle and a warm welcome is assured. FINNINGLEY WI We meet on the 3rd Thursday of each month at the village hall and visitors are always welcome. In February we tried our hands at decorating cup cakes with varying success!! News, News, News, News, News, News... Harry Mathews Bowel Transplant Trust

Charity Fun Day Charity Fun Day Sunday 23rd June 2013,

11am till 4pm at Kilham Hall/ Playing Field

There is currently no other bowel transplant charity in the UK. The Trust’s main aim is to provide a financial crisis fund to families of bowel transplant recipients, as children have a slower recovery and poorer prognosis in comparison to any other organ transplant.

Due to lack of research, high risk of infection from the donor bowel and sheer lack of numbers, many children are struggling to survive the first year post transplant. In addition to this there are only two main centres, Kings College Hospital London and Birmingham Children's Hospital that can perform the transplant and both maintain complete control of care during the first year, requiring extensive travel for the child and their family. Post operatively it can be up to a year before you can use public transport (even a taxi), therefore families must drive to every appointment, some through central London and south of the river and pay daily parking charges of £25 as the NHS can no longer afford to fund transport. Due to the added complexities of bowel transplant the children require 1/2 full time carers post op and generally one parent will have to cease employment. Also due to bed limitations even the children who are doing relatively well are finding their families are having to book hotels for their hospital admissions and foot the bill. For a hospital stay longer than 3 months, all statutory benefits will stop.

These families are quietly struggling and the charity aims to help wherever it can. The Trust has close links with a family liaison officer who will assess in depth any family that applies for help. A grant application form is completed and submitted to the Trust for a final decision.

2013/14 Annual Precept

After careful consideration the parish council determined that the annual precept for 2013/14 should be increased by £600 (in line with inflation) to cover all households in the parish. The increase will be used towards the purchase of picnic tables at Kilham Lane Recreation Ground and to maintain existing facilities. The total precept will be £27k and will on average add no more than of £1 per annum onto the cost for each household. Parking on Grass Verges

Consideration is being given to measures to discourage the parking of vehicles on the verges and to improve the appearance of those verges that have been damages due to continual parking. Residents are again asked to refrain from parking and driving over the verges in order not to spoil the appearance of the parish. Improvement to the Fork Junction at Whiphill Top Lane

At the time of writing DMBC are intending to undertake road improvements at the fork junction of Whiphill Top Lane by creating a right turning lane on the approach from Auckley. The work is scheduled for April 2013 and as a result there may be temporary traffic lights in place whilst the work is completed. Request for a Pedestrian Crossing on Doncaster Road

Following the decision to grant planning permission for the building of 83 houses on land off Doncaster Road and The Close the parish council has requested that some of the money that is required to be given by the developer for the benefit of the area (Section 106 of the Town and Country Planning Act) is used to fund a pedestrian crossing. The parish council is liaising with DMBC Ward Councillors and the outcome is awaited. Christmas Carol Singing

Thank you to all the residents who again attended the very enjoyable Christmas Carol Singing event at Kilham Hall on Wednesday 12 December. A special thank you also goes to Mr Littlewood for volunteering to play the organ and to Father Christmas for his visit. If anyone wishes to give feedback or has ideas for this year’s event please notify the Clerk to the Council. The proceeds of the raffle along with a donation from Kilham Hall have been shared between the two local cancer charities Aurora and Firefly.

Speed Up Your Internet Connection! In 2002, I sat in the Eagle and Child in Auckley with an old College friend and we discussed how we could improve the Internet Connectivity in the Finningley / Auckley / Blaxton area. Both working in IT with a passion for online gaming, it seemed only fair that we could enjoy the same Internet connectivity as the most part of Doncaster was already enjoying. At the time, the best we had was BT Home High-way running a whole 64kps! (think over an hour to download a single music track from Amazon). By working with BT, we were able to set up a Website and run a local campaign to register interest for Broadband. The campaign was very successful and gave BT the information it needed to know that if they invested in the area and brought Broadband to Finningley, it would be successful. In 2003 ADSL capability was intro-duced into our exchange and it changed the face of local internet access forever (so now the same music track from Amazon would take minutes). This has stood the test of time but technology moves on and there is now a new service – Super Fast Broadband. Super Fast Broadband will see most people’s Internet connection speed increase more than 20x. You will no doubt have seen the adverts on TV for ‘BT Infinity’ and the like (the same music track from Amazon in seconds!) and it’s already in many of our neighbouring villages such as Branton, Cantley and Armthorpe but without your help – it will likely take an age to come to our area. Hayfield Lane Primary School NewsHayfield Lane Primary School News The Kingfisher class have been finding out where Spiderman would like to go if he visited Doncaster. They went on a mystery tour all around the area calling at the airport, the Dome, St. George`s Minster and other places. They took lots of photographs. The class stopped to explore and have lunch at Astrabound and then had a good walk around the lake at Lakeside. All of the class said they had a fantastic time and agreed that Spiderman`s favourite places to go would be Astrabound and the lake.

Hawk class To help them answer their Learning Challenge question - ‘Why is Britain an attractive place to settle? our Hawk class visited the ever popular Jorvik centre and Dig in York. It was a very cold, frosty and foggy morning as we headed off to York with 32 very eager children who could not wait to experience firsthand what Viking life was once like. The class was excited as they journeyed through the reconstruction of Viking-Age streets, as they would have been 1000 years ago. They encountered the old-Norse speaking citizens, saw inside their houses and back yards, experienced a blast of smoke from the blacksmith’s furnace and enjoyed the smell of home-cooked stew inside the home of an amber worker. Next, we went on to The Dig where we became archaeologists for the afternoon. We had fun digging in four replica excavation pits finding artefacts based on Roman, Viking, medieval and Victorian Britain. Hawk class had a very enjoyable day and took some valuable information back to school to help them with their Viking work.

Owl Class As part of their Learning Challenge ‘What is it like to live in Africa?’ our Owls class took part in an African dance and music workshop with African artist Tongesayi Gumbo. Tongesayi taught the class first some easy-to-follow dance moves that got progressively harder as the session went on, which then ended with a 10 minutes long dance sequence. Although quite tiring, the class tried their best to keep up with Tongesayi and had a lot of fun at the same time. Next, the class took part in a drumming and percussion session. They used African bass drums and small items of hand percussion, bells, shakers, wood blocks and tambourines. Everyone learnt to play some easy rhythms.

At the end, Tongesayi held a question and answer session where the children asked him about his life in Africa. They found out lots of interesting facts that they could use in their work and he taught them some African words.


Young Voices On Wednesday 23rd January our school choir, Hayfield Harmonies headed off to Sheffield Arena for the annual Young Voices con-cert. We had been very worried earlier in the week as two concerts had already been postponed because of the snowy weather, but were very relieved when we had it confirmed that the con-cert we were attending was going ahead. Again, the choir had worked so hard during the autumn term to learn the songs and dance moves and the concert was the reward for all their efforts. The choir gets so much from the experience of being part of such an amazing event. This year we were privileged to share the stage with the likes of Connie Talbot from Britain’s Got Talent, Urban Strides, a vibrant dance company and the African Chil-dren’s Choir. In school, we are extremely proud of our choir, their enthusiasm and be-haviour on the day was incredible. They are a credit to our school. Breakfast Club At the beginning of the new school year back in September, Hayfield Lane started their own Breakfast Club. Up to now, the breakfast club has become quite

popular. We have children at-tending from reception right up to our year 6 class. The children come and enjoy the company of other children while eating their breakfasts. We have enjoyed some themed mornings of a French break-fast where the children en-joyed croissants, brioche and French bread. We even had a ‘spotty’ breakfast for Children In Need and pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

Branton St Wilfrid’s School News

Year 3 Greek Day Achilles the Ancient Greek hero travelled through time to tell Class 3 his story. It was a story of battles, disguises, love and tragedy. Mary the puppeteer helped Class 3 to make puppets to re-tell the story and everyone made their own puppet. The children then used these to perform the story to the Reception and Kat Stage 1 Classes who thoroughly enjoyed the event. Class 3 children have been left with some wonderful memories of the day and an increased understanding of their Ancient Greeks topic and puppets.

Year 6 Athletics Final at the Dome As we reported in the last article our year 6 team of athletes were successful in qualifying for the indoor athletics final at the Dome on 8th February. Representing the school and Pyramid of Schools were Matti, Joseph, Lewis S, Lewis H, Harry, Kieron, Thomas E, Thomas G, Charlie, Georgina, Freya, Alice, Saskia, Shae and Brooke. Accompanied by team managers Mrs Neville and Mrs Roberts our very excited and somewhat nervous pupils took part in a variety of field and track events. Despite failing to win overall the team had a very enjoyable afternoon and showed great sporting attitudes throughout. Well done!

Netball A big Well Done goes to our team of netball players who came runners up at the Hayfield Netball Tournament! Thank you Georgina, Alice, Isabelle, Janelle, Jemima, Gracie, Emily C and Harriet!


Class 5 and 6 Astrosphere Visit On Wednesday 7th February, Class 5 and Class 6 enjoyed a visit from the Astrosphere, a giant inflatable dome. Inside the Astrosphere we met Steve, who told us about the Earth, Sun and Moon. He showed us a video of how the Earth moves around the Sun. Then, he made the Astrosphere dark and showed us what the night sky looks like. He showed us where the different constellations are, and told us stories about them, like the story of Perseus, Medusa and Andromeda. He also showed us where constellations such as the Plough, the Great Bear and the Little Bear are, and taught us to find Sirius, the brightest star in the sky, and planets such as Jupiter. Finally, Steve showed us videos of the other planets in our solar system, and we also watched a film about space tourism. Classes 5 and 6 learnt a lot in the Astrosphere – you could say that their morning was out of this world!

Class 5’s Henry VIII Visit On Friday 9th February, Class 5 had a very special day at school. As part of our Tudor History topic, we enjoyed a visit from King Henry VIII! The children spent a thoroughly enjoyable day learning about King Henry, his wives, his friends and his enemies! During the morning, they learnt about one of Henry’s hobbies, which was hunting with birds of prey, and made their own paper ‘owls’ to hunt with. They also learnt how to write with a quill and ink, and enjoyed doing some Tudor art activities. During the afternoon, Henry VIII showed us how to walk like a king, and we practised walking with a ‘swagger stick,’ which Tudor kings and queens used to do to make them look powerful and important. Henry VIII also taught us a Tudor dance. There was just enough time for some questions and answers at the end of the day too!

JUBILATE at ‘YOUNG VOICES 2013’ For the eighth year running, JUBILATE represented St Wilfrid’s school at this event at Sheffield Arena. Over 5000 children took part, and the concert was the culmination of many weeks practising the twelve songs and four dance routines we had been given to learn September. We were joined by famous singers and dancers from television and stage and all the money raised was donated to children’s charities. We took 49 family and friends with us, and they enjoyed the concert as much as we did! We felt that this year both the behaviour and the level of commitment shown by the 28 Jubilate children who took part was exceptional. Well done! Mrs Dilks and Mrs Thompson would like to thank Mr and Mrs Woodward, Mrs Atkinson, Mr Dilks, Mrs Shephard and Catherine Shipley for all their help. Roll on Young Voices 2014!


Auckley School News Sporting Events On Tuesday 15th January we took a team of Year 5 & 6 boys and girls to an indoor athletics competition. All the children gave 110% as we didn’t have a full team to com-pete against other local schools in fields events which included speed bounce, vertical jump, standing long jump, javelin and sitting ball throw as well as sprints, hurdles and relays. They all worked well as a team encouraging each other and making sure everyone got a chance to compete. Overall we came third in this competition but well done to everyone for taking part. On Wednesday 6th February we took a team of seven girls from Years 5 and 6 to an indoor netball competi-tion. The girls had only had 4 hours of practice from Carlene Farmer before this competition but they all worked really well as a team. Overall the girls came joint first with three other local schools so in the end it came down to goal difference where we were placed third. I know Carlene, Mrs Bowling and Mrs Barass were very impressed by the girls determination and team work at this competition and we would like to say a big well done for all their hard work. Foundation Stage This half term our topic has been ‘Traditional Tales’ and each week we focused on a different story. One week we had been looking at Goldilocks and the three bears so in literacy we designed our own flavour of porridge. On the Friday we followed our design sheets, making porridge then adding our chosen ingredients and tasting them. Some of the ingredients we added included: bana-na, apple, chocolate, honey, golden syrup, sprinkles and raisins. They were all delicious and we enjoy porridge now. We also spent a week on the Gingerbread man story and enjoyed retelling the story and creating wanted posters to help find him. In the story we began to won-der ‘Why didn’t the gingerbread man want to get wet?’ as he went on the foxes head instead of swimming across himself, so we did our own investigation. We predicted what might happen to the Gingerbread Man when he got in the water. Then using one we had baked that week we put him in some water and watched what happened. At first he floated and then when we tried to pick him up he had gone all soggy so he broke into pieces and sank. So now we know why the Ginger-bread Man didn’t want to get wet.


The Art of Africa This term Years 1 and 2 have been carrying out a creative topic on Tinga Tinga tales and the art of Africa. We have had a fantastic time learning about Africa and how it is different to our country and we have really enjoyed our messy art work. So far we have looked at Tinga Tinga patterns and tried to create them on the computer. We have also made 3D sculptures of African animals using mod-roc and have painted them with Tinga Tinga patterns. Block Gear Changing & Crash for Cash Scams

Dear readers, Block-changing means choosing and changing gear once, instead of working through all the gears. Missing unnecessary gears saves on fuel, as well as wear and tear and saves driver effort. Use your gears to go and your brakes to slow. When slowing on approach to a roundabout or junction, use acceleration sense and/or brakes to decrease speed, and then select the right gear for the speed you are travelling at. This may mean skipping out several gears at once. Gear changes should be made after braking but before turning the steering wheel. Block-changing contributes to a calm and planned driving style. It requires less driver input and so allows more time for other things like looking for problems or reading road signs. A good driver will use the brakes or their acceleration sense to slow down, not the gears. Brake pads are cheaper to replace than clutches, so use the brakes if you need to. When increasing speed, you can save on fuel consumption by skipping out gears, for example per-haps going straight from third to fifth.

Crash for cash scams. Crash for cash scams are staged collisions. The one to watch for is when someone deliberately drives dangerously to force a crash so they can make an exaggerated insurance claim. How to avoid them: Always look ahead and anticipate hazards. Keep a safe following distance from the car in front and watch traffic overtaking you so that you are not surprised if it pulls across and brakes in front of you. Beware of tailgaters. The car behind you will try to get your attention so you don’t concentrate on the driver in front. Pay attention to the vehicles around you and if you feel threatened by a tailgater, pull over somewhere safe to let them past. Keep an eye out for local news – criminal gangs doing this tend to use the same locations a lot. Local news can suggest where it is. If you are involved in one, remember: If you’re suspicious, don’t ask them directly about it at the scene. Try to take photos of the damage – discreetly if possible, get a description of the driver and count the number of people in the other vehicle. Take photos discreetly, if possible. If you need the emergency services, call 999. Stay calm. You’ll need to swap details with other drivers. 40 Days of... I'll begin by posing a question. How many days belong to the year? You might think the answer is around 365 but no! The answer is 325 because, of course, 40 of the days are Lent!

So it's a bit of a lame joke but, as I'm writing on Shrove Tuesday, Lent is on my mind. I remember learning about Pancake Day at school and discovering that the reason we celebrate it was because it was a tradition that people were expected to spend Lent denying themselves the richer, fattier food for 40 days so they made pancakes to use up those particular foodstuffs. Over time of course, like other celebrations, Shrove Tuesday has become somewhat commercialised and currently we're not too far from saying 'Pancake Tuesday sponsored by Jiff Lemon'.

Pancake Tuesday has outlived many other traditions, such as May Pole Dancing and Bog Snorkelling (yes that is a genuine English Tradition) and remains a firm favourite with children an adults alike. Is this perhaps just because pancakes as so tasty or does this reflect that we still have an underlying feeling that sometimes giving something up for a short period could actually be quite good for us. I certainly have non-Christian friends who wouldn’t come church who still give something up for Lent each year.

But do we have to? I, like many others, used to give something up for Lent every year. At the time I was a teacher and I would give something up that I knew I would find difficult to go without (typically chocolate or tea) and I would also make sure I told my colleagues and students that I was doing so and as Lent wore on just how hard I was finding it. Looking back now I realise firstly what a pain in the neck I must have been to work with in March but more importantly that my ‘giving up’ had stopped being about God and had become about me.

As a Christian I believe in fasting as a discipline. Jesus did it and The Bible encourages us to do it. However to fast in private without making a fuss about it is really the key to connecting with God. I’m much more likely now to do something more positive for Lent like start a new Bible reading programme or increase my giving to my favourite charity. I think whatever we’re doing to mark Lent we should do it cheerfully and for the glory of God.
