Ban Fracking Now!&ACT3HEETs/CTOBER
WATER
Fracking akes a huge oll on afeced communiies, generaesmassive volumes o oxic wase, creaes hazardous air polluionproblems, poses long-erm risks o vial drinking waer resources andhreaens o lock in caasrophic changes o our climae. We need o ban
racking now.
The erm racking is shorhand or hydraulic racuring.
Afer drilling down o a rock ormaion ha holds oil or
naural gas, and hen drilling sideways hrough his arge-
ed layer o rock, operaors injec, under exreme pressure,
millions o gallons o waer mixed wih sand and chemicals
o racure (or rack) he rock.1 Wihou hese racures,
oil or naural gas would remain ighly held in he rock, un-
able o low up he well.2
In he public debae over he uure o he U.S. energy sys-
em, racking has come o mean much more han jus he
speciic process o high-volume hydraulic racuring o long
horizonal wells o exrac shale gas, igh gas and igh oil.
To he public, racking represens all ha he speciic process
o hydraulic racuring enails: marred landscapes and rag-
mened oress; roads crowded wih heavy-duy rucks car-
rying waer; chemicals and oxic wase; earhquakes relaedo disposal o his wase, and a legacy o air polluion, waer
polluion, climae polluion and public healh problems.
Fracking and oher unconvenional mehods o exracing
oil and gas hreaen o prolong our desrucive dependence
on ossil uels. We can, insead, mee our energy needs wih
clean, renewable and abundan resources.3 Bu wihou a
ban on racking, he oil and gas indusry will coninue o
sand in he way.PHOTO CC-BY-SA PLAZAK / COMMONS.WIKIMEDIA.OR

Fracking brings economiccosts to local communities hidden in plain sight
While Big Oil and Big Gas enjoy huge prois, padded by bil-
lions o dollars a year in axpayer-unded subsidies,4 communi-
ies across he counry pay he price:
Rens are rising wih he inlux o ransien oil and gasindusry workers, pushing ou local residens o aeced
communiies5;
Agriculural lands are being los, eiher aken ou oproducion o make room or oil and gas wells, pipelines
and oher inrasrucure,6 or conaminaed eiher di-
recly or via groundwaer in he afermah o ineviable
explosions, leaks and spills7;
Tourism and agriculural brands are under hrea asdrilling and racking operaions mar scenic landscapes,
ragmen oress and leave a legacy o polluion ha es-
pecially undercus organic arms, wineries and breweries8;
Heavy-duy rucks hauling oxic wases are clog-ging and damaging roads a he publics expense, add-
ing o he nonsop noise and ligh polluion rom drilling
and racking rigs and leading o accidens9;
Homeowners are seeing heir propery valuesdecline, geting shorchanged on royalies and having
diiculy selling heir homes since banks are reusing o
oer morgages when drilling and racking are close by10;
Workers are being poisoned, injured and evenkilled rom accidens and harmul exposures o oxins11;
and
Crime and oher demands on social services areon he rise in aeced communiies, wih emergency
services and schools sreched hin.12
Fracking prolongs our
dependence on dirty anddangerous energy resources
Drilling and racking amoun o a large, unconrolled public
healh experimen. The oil and gas indusry is:
Producing massive volumes o oxic and even radio-acive wase, he disposal o which is causing earh-
quakes and risking drinking waer resources13;
Causing housands o accidens, leaks and spillseach year ha hreaen rivers, sreams and shallow aqui-
ers14
; Pumping hazardous polluans ino he air, a heexpense o local communiies, amilies and arms15;
Turning homes ino explosive hazards by conamina-ing waer wells wih mehane and oher harmul gases16;
Consuming millions o gallons o waer or eachracked well, and compeing wih armers or local
waer supplies17;
