Future career paths: Pria Kalsi (2016) has been accepted by RADA and LAMDA on their Foundation Courses in Acting and will be taking up her place at the latter this September. Charles Layburn (2015) has successfully completed his Foundation Course at RADA and is taking up a three year acting course at the Bristol Old Vic, having turned down a place at RADA.

Achievements

Maths In the Hans Woyda Maths Competition the Bancroft’s team comprising Peter Andreev (U6E), Sayon Uthayakumar (L6S), Soumya Krishna Kumar (U4E) and Alex Yan (L4W), reached the semi-finals for the first time when they faced City of London Boys’ School. In a hard fought match, Bancroft’s lost 45-60 to a very strong City team. Excellent results in the UKMT Senior Mathematics Challenge with 18 Golds, 27 Silvers and 20 Bronzes. Four students, Peter Andreev (U6E), who scored an impressive full marks, Viraj Shah (U6E), Sayon Uthayakumar (L6S) and Nivethan Balakulendran (L6E) progressed onto the Senior Olympiad. As a result of their performances in the Intermediate Maths Challenge, Darshaan Balasirishwaron (5N), Louise Small (5E), Alex Yan (L4W), Himaani Yogendran (U4E), Soumya Krishna Kumar (U4E), Oscar Saharoy (U4E) and Swasthi Surendran (L4W) qualified for the Intermediate Maths Olympiad in which Soumya, Swasthi and Alex gained Distinctions. Swasthi also received a medal for scoring in the top 55 of all entrants, and Alex received a medal and a book prize for scoring in the top 21 of all entrants. Following her performance in the Intermediate Maths Olympiad, Sumya Krishna Kumar was selected to attend the National Mathematics Summer School 2016 held at Woodhouse Grove School, Leeds. Four pupils qualified for this year’s Junior Maths Olympiad: Jai Robinson (RW) and Max Stear (RW), each of whom gained a Merit, and Sara El-Khamlichi (RE) and Akhila Natarajan (3S) who both gained a Distinction and a Bronze Medal. In the Junior Maths Challenge, Bancroftians gained 29 Gold, 29 Silver and 10 Bronze medals. In the Essex Regional Final of the UKMT Team Maths Challenge, the Bancroft’s team of Alex Yan (L4W), Swasthi Surendran (L4W), Sara El-Khamlichi (RE) and Jathusan Vijayakumar (RS) performed well but finished second to KEGS.

Science and Engineering Ben Norris (L6W) obtained second place in the Kelvin Science essay competition with a discussion entitled “There is no such thing as electron deficient compounds, only theory deficient Chemists”. He attended the prize giving at Peterhouse College, Cambridge on 24 July. Ben Norris (L6W) was awarded a Roentgenium certificate in the Cambridge Chemistry Challenge which placed him in the top 55 scores from over 7200 entries; following this, he was invited to a special Chemistry camp at St Catherine’s College, Cambridge. Sayon Uthayakumar (L6S) was awarded a Gold certificate; Nivethan Balakulendran (L6E), Sujil James (L6S) and Amy Kelly (L6E) all receive Silver and Anand Bahri (L6W), Raphael Dickson (L6N), Charlotte Leung (L6S), Christina Okafor (L6E) and Eimante Raupelyte (L6W) all Copper certificates. Rajiv Samanta (L6E) was awarded an Arkwright Engineering Scholarship sponsored by The Engineering Construction Industry Training Board.

At the Primary Science Fair, first prize was awarded to “Hydrogels” by Mahnu Bhabutta (L6N), Prashan Clare (L6E), Sayon Uthayakumar (L6S) and Matthew Willoughby (L6N). Runner up prizes were awarded to “Glo-many Germs” by Emman Bhangu (L6E), Charlotte Leung (L6S), Christina Okafor (L6E) and Aarya Sajilal (L6E) and to Jack Laumann-Mamas (L6N) “Aquaponics”. The winner in the vote for the “pupils’ choice” was “Slingshot Mania,” with “Scalextrics Science” a very close runner up. Thuza Naing (L6S) and Chandana Nagaraj’s (L6W) short video on DNA was placed third in a national schools’ competition for pupils in years 10-13 organised by the Oxford Institute of Radiation Oncology. Peter Andreev (U6E) was awarded a Gold Medal in the British Physics Olympiad Round One placing him in the top 150. Viraj Shah (U6E) was awarded a Bronze II and Usamaan Hafiz (U6W), Felix Edwards (U6S), Chloe Wong (U6S), Pranav Kalidini (U6E) and Isabelle Ormerod (U6N) all received Commendations. In the Royal Society of Chemistry UK Olympiad, Usmaan Hafiz (U6W) was awarded a Gold Medal; Tony Aloysius (U6W), Peter Andreev (U6E), Isabelle Ormerod (U6N), Kajanaan Rajmohan (U6S), Viraj Shah (U6E), Sayon Uthayakumar (L6S) were awarded Silvers and Anand Bahri (L6W), Muhammed Choudhury (U6N), Ram Hathi (U6S), Emma Jackson (U6S), Amy Kelly (L6E), Charlotte Leung (L6S), Thuza Naing (L6S), Krishan Navsariwala (U6W), Ben Norris (L6W), Aminah Patel (U6W), Chloe Wong (U6S) were all awarded Bronze Medals. The Chemistry Mastermind team of Daffodil Dhayaa (5E), Sarina Ramasamy (U4W), Swasthi Surendran (L4W) and Alex Yan (L4W) won the Essex Finals at KEGS. The team progressed to the National Top of the Bench competition, held in Loughborough in April where they were placed third. Thirty three A Level Biologists sat the Olympiad, with three Gold Award winners, Peter Andreev (U6E) and Gaurav Bajaj (U6W) and Ben Norris (L6W), There were also three Silver Award winners: Emma Jackson (U6S), Rajdeep Dhamu (U6N) and Tony Aloysius (U6W) and three Bronze Award winners: Jadene Lewis (U6N) and Anand Bahri (L6W) and Amy Kelly (L6E). In addition, three pupils were Highly Commended and a final eight were Commended. The L6 have a further chance to compete when they take part in the Biology Intermediate Olympiad in June. Out of the twenty five U4 pupils who sat the Biology Challenge, two [Anwar Jouhary (U4N) and Oscar Saharoy (U4E)] achieved a Gold Award; three [Jeremy Jebaneson (U4N), Lauren Heskey (U4E) and Lauren Walker (U4E)] a Silver and eight a Bronze Award [Farouk Asubiaro (U4W), Soumya Krishna Kumar (U4E), Mihir Shah (U4N), Sarina Ramasamy (U4W), Neil Cifelli (U4N), Jathavan Thevarajah (U4N), Jamil Haque (U4E) and Zain Khan 9U4W)}. A further eight were Highly Commended and three Commended. Nineteen members of the L6 were accepted onto Headstart Courses: residential summer courses, based at leading universities for pupils hoping to study Engineering and other STEM courses. Fifteen members of the Fifth Form completed their Silver Crest Awards, part of a scheme run by the British Science Association.

Arts and Humanities Shaina Sangha (U4W) was placed second overall in the Orwell Youth Prize competition; she was invited to the The Orwell Youth Prize Celebration Day 2016 which took place on Friday 24 June at Pembroke College, Oxford. Lily Eagland’s (L6S) entry, “Why was child labour a problem for 19th century societies?” into the Vellacott History Essay competition was commended by the judges at Peterhouse College, Cambridge and was included in the final shortlist. Luis Black (L4E) reached the shortlisted final eighteen of BBC Radio 5 Live’s “Young Sports Commentator of the Year” competition. Sara El-Khamlichi (RE) was named as one of the ten winners for this year’s Guardian Young Critics competition and invited to attend the awards ceremony and party at the Guardian offices in London. Works by Elle Lycett (5N) and Sophia Bisset (5E) were shortlisted in the National Open Art Competition 2016. Following his win in the London heat, Tyler Ward-Bagnald (L6N) reached the Regional Finals of ARTiculation 2016 and presented his talk on Banksy’s “Very Little Helps” at the National Gallery. The Kids Lit Quiz team of Tamsyn Hancock (RW), Sara El-Khamlichi (RE), Akhila Natarajan (3S) and Aditya Praveen (RN) secured a place in the National Final by beating the team from KEGS in the Essex Heat to reach the National Finals in Oxford. Our B team, Amala Sangha (3W), Manon Senthilnathan (3E), Emily Harris (3E) and Dylan Ferguson (3E), came a very respectable 4th place. Twenty seven pupils from the Removes and L4s appeared in a condensed adaptation of Twelfth Night as part of the Shakespeare Schools’ Festival at the Queen’s Theatre Hornchurch.

Music

Martha Grimsell (RS), Alex Yan (L4W), Emily Jackson (L4N) and Matteo Mariano (U4S) were chosen to work with viola player Rachel Roberts during a String Masterclasss held at School. Rebecca Leung (L6E) competed in the second round (Category Auditions, Keyboard) of the BBC Young Musician 2016 competition. Anya Shah (L4S) and Roshni Parmar (L4E) gave a mini piano recital at the ‘Woodford Music Circle’ Concert at St James’s Church Hall, Palmerston Road. Anika Mayor (L4E) was awarded a place at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance, Junior Department, on Saturdays to study the flute.

Sport Several hockey players have been selected to attend JRPCs (Junior Regional Performance Centres); this follows successfully representing Essex at JAC level. Girls selected are at U16 Millie Woods (L4W) and Anika Mayor (L4E) and Claudia Joarder (L4W) at U15. The following boys were selected: at U18 Will Hopkins (L6S) and Ben Margetson-Rushmore (U6S); at U17 Josh Beardwell (5E), Omir Cayir (5W), Nathan Rose (5E) and Max Sydenham (5E); Daniel Davey (U4S) (U16); at U15 Luis Black (U4E), Sebastian Coupe (L4S) and Taliesin Prole (U4E). The boys’ U13 hockey team won all seven of their games to become Essex Champions and represented Essex in the East of England play-offs. The boys’ U16 hockey team played in the East of England play-offs finishing top of their group but missing out on qualification to the quarter finals of the National Competition. The girls’ U18 hockey team finished in second place of the Essex Cup and qualified for the East Regional Finals. Both the U14 and U16 netball teams represented Essex Met (U16 Essex Met Champions) in the Regional Round of the National Schools’ Netball Tournament. Oscar King (3W), Jude Talbot (3W), Emre Muzammal (3E) and Aarav Shah (3N) all played in the U12 team from Old Loughtonians Hockey Club which competed in the National Finals in Nottingham. Zayne Avril, Josh Beardwell, Omer Cayir, Ben Margetson-Rushmore, Nathan Rose, Max Sydenham and Archie Woods represented Old Loughtonians in the Eastern region final of the U16 indoor hockey tournament; as the overall winners, they progressed to the national finals. Zayne Avril, Josh Beardwell, Omer Cayir and Nathan Rose also represented Old Loughtonians in the first indoor hockey tournament to be held at the Copper Box Arena. The U15 girls were runners up in the John Kelsall Netball Tournament; the team also reached the Semi Final of the ISNC Plate, which they lost to Stockport Grammar School. Tamika Quartey (5S) was been selected for the London & South East Netball Academy. Sinmi Solanke (5W) and Busola Femi-Gureje (U4E) were invited to train with the London and South-East region. Talissa Quartey (U4W), Katy Harris (U4E), Yoma Toweh (U4W), Claudia Joarder (L4W), Victoria Morgan-Couch (L4E), Harriet Wood (RS) and Anna Francesca Hammond (RS) were all selected for the Essex Met academies. Louis Whalley (RE) and Jacob Jayaraj (RE) were selected for the U13 Essex rugby squad. Alex Agedah (U4S) was named as the U14 boys’ Player of the Season by Essex Cricket. Louis Whalley (RE) was presented with a Jack Petchey Award for outstanding services to his cricket club, Bancroft’s Lions. The U15B indoor cricket team won the Essex Met U15B tournament. The U13 cricket team played Ilford County High in the Essex Cup Final. The girls’ U13 cricket team won through to finals of the Essex Cup.

Grace Kumar (3N) was selected as part of the girls’ U13 Essex cricket squad and Eleanor de Renzy-Channer (RS) was selected for the girls’ Essex U13 Development squad. Phoebe Collins (5S) made her senior debut for Essex playing with Miss Wainwright in the Inter-County Cup and helped Essex gain promotion to Division 2. She is ranked as Essex No. 1 at both U16 and U18 level and nationally she is 35th (U16) and 85th (U18). The U12 and U13 girls were overall winners of the Haileybury Tennis Tournament. In the East Region Tennis Championship, Raya Uzonova (U4N) and Tanisha Schumacher (L6E) were the champions for the U18, division 1; Alina Schumacher (L4E) and Anya Shah (L4S) were U18, division 2 champions. Grace Kelly (U4N) and Dora Zhou (U4W) competed in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championship held at Crystal Palace. The event involves a 200m swim and 1600m run. Grace finished in 23rd place and Dora in 26th. The team of Grace, Dora and Raya Uzonova (U4N) were placed 5th in the team competition in the British Championships. In the Redbridge District Athletics competition for years 7 & 8, Bancroft’s Thirds girls finished second and the boys fourth and in the year 8 competitions the Removes girls were fourth and the boys fifth. In the 2015 English National Championship, Amrita Robertson (U6W) won the 16/17 years 200m Freestyle; she followed this with a win in the 50m Fly for the 17 years age group in the 2016 Championship. She is now ranked No 1 in England for her age group and No 6 in the open age group female. Bancroft’s girls U14 badminton team qualified for the London Regional Final, representing East London, which was held at Crystal Palace. Naomi Doye (U6W) rowed in the British Championships for her club, Globe, in the U18 category. They won a Silver medal in an 8-man boat. In November, Naomi took part in GB trials. Raya Uzunova (U4N) won Gold at the London Youth Games in sailing. She won gold in the single handed Topper and her team from Tower Hamlets was the overall winner in sailing. A total of 51 Bancroft’s pupils represented Redbridge in the London Youth Games in a variety of sports including rowing, athletics, weightlifting, hockey, netball, tennis and swimming. Bancroft’s had the biggest representation of pupils from any school in the borough. Yoma Toweh (U4W) won a Gold medal for netball in the year 10-13 age group. Both the boys’ U12, comprising of William Headlam, Emre Muzammal (3E), Jude Talbot (3W) and girls’, Emily Harris (3N), Mai Malik (3N), Grace Kumar (3N) and Charlotte Peters (3E) hockey teams finished first in their respective competitions. Nathan Rose (5E), Amir Sampat (5N) and Max Wieteska (5N) represented Bancroft’s in the National Schools go-karting competition. In the Royal Navy Recognised Sea Scout National Swimming Gala, Holly Timmis (L4E) won the Individual Gold in the Under 12 Breaststroke and William Bolitho (RW) took Individual Silver in the under 14 Backstroke.

Other Yasmin Sampaio-Cook (U6E) was awarded a place on the KPMG School and College Leaver Programme with Durham University. Ben Harris (5E) and Ciaran Simpkins (5W) were chosen for the national Canada Cadet Exchange Scheme 2016 following a demanding selection weekend at Woolwich Barracks. They travelled to Canada this summer as part of a group of thirty six cadets for a six week Adventurous Training expedition. Finlay Ferguson (U6E) Head of Contingent was awarded a Sixth Form Army Scholarship. The Junior Schools Challenge quiz team comprising of Ben Bagley (RW), Dylan Ferguson (3E), and Alice Layzell-Smith (RN) beat Sevenoaks but narrowly lost to Bickley Park School.
