RECOGNITION OF TEACHING EXCELLENCE Molly Rogers - Recipient of the 2017 Harold J. Grilliot Award for Exemplary Service to Un-dergraduate Organizations, which recognizes a faculty member who has performed exempla-ry service to undergraduate student organizations and advanced student-faculty relations. Only students may make nominations. Nominated for the 2017 Michael Dean Excellence in Classroom Education and Learning (EXCEL) Undergraduate Teaching Award and the 2017 Michael Dean EXCEL Graduate Teaching Award. Howard Richshafer - Recipient of the 2017 Outstanding Adjunct Teaching in Accounting Award (includes a $1,000 prize), which recognized outstanding teaching by an adjunct faculty member who places students at the center to achieve academic excellence. Mark Bell - Nominated for the 2017 Michael Dean Excellence in Classroom Education and Learning (EXCEL) Undergraduate Teaching Award, which honors outstanding teaching of undergraduate students, instilling a sense of confidence in students’ ability to reach beyond their potential while bringing balance and a sense of reality to higher education. Maureen Bruns - Nominated for the Dr. Simon Anderson Faculty Recognition Award, an honor named after Dr. Simon Anderson, who worked as a professor in CCM for 41 years. The award is presented to a faculty member who has shown continued support of education ad-vancement of the student-athletes at UC through nominations by student-athletes. Peter Burrell - Nominated for the 2017 Michael Dean Excellence in Classroom Education and Learning (EXCEL) Undergraduate Teaching Award and the 2017 Harold J. Grilliot Award for Exemplary Service to Undergraduate Organizations. Brian Goodson - Nominated for the 2017 Michael Dean Excellence in Classroom Education and Learning (EXCEL) Undergraduate Teaching Award and the 2017 Daniel Westerbeck Award, which emphasizes excellence in graduate teaching. NEW FACULTY MEMBERS

Adam J. Olson, PhD, CPA, Assistant Professor of Accounting Adam completed his PhD in Accounting at Texas A&M Universi-ty (College Station) in 2015. He is a CPA with a Master in Pro-fessional Accounting from the University of Texas at Austin and earned his BA at Brigham Young University. For 3 years he worked at a CPA firm. With his strong accounting background, he was awarded an AICPA Accounting Doctoral Scholars (ADS) Fellowship for 4 years during his PhD program. His primary teaching and research interests are in the area of taxation. He

has published two articles in the top tax journal of the American Accounting Associa-tion, the Journal of the American Taxation Association. Linna Shi, PhD, CFA, Assistant Professor of Accounting

Linna earned her PhD in Accounting at Syracuse University in 2011. She is a CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) and earned her MS in Finance at the Stockholm School of Economics. Her professional work included positions at ABN AMRO and the Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi. She comes to UC from SUNY-Binghamton, where she won their Business School’s Best Teaching Award for 2013-14. She has articles published or forthcoming in the Review of Accounting Studies, Accounting

Horizons, Advances in Accounting, and the Journal of Business, Finance and Ac-counting. She also has many advanced working papers, including manuscripts un-der 2nd round review at Accounting Horizons and the Journal of Accounting, Audit-ing and Finance. At UC, Linna teaches financial accounting, including financial statement analysis.

Changjiang (John) Wang, PhD, Assistant Professor of Accounting

John graduated with his Accounting PhD from the University of Missouri in 2008. His MS in Accounting is from Texas Tech Uni-versity. He has articles published, forthcoming, or conditionally accepted in Contemporary Accounting Research (CAR)(3), Au-diting: A Journal of Practice and Theory, the Journal of Account-ing, Auditing and Finance (JAAF)(2), Accounting Horizons (2), the Journal of Business, Finance and Accounting, and the Jour-nal of Accounting and Public Policy. His primary research inter-

ests include corporate disclosure policy, financial reporting quality, and issues relat-ed to capital market intermediates. He comes to us from Florida International Univer-sity. At UC, John teaches financial accounting. Mary Jo Heintz, MS Accounting, CPA, Annual Adjunct

Mary Jo graduated Summa Cum Laude from Thomas More Col-lege and earned her MS in Accounting at UC. She is a CPA and worked 8 years in Audit for Deloitte & Touche LLP. For the next 22 years she worked at Procter & Gamble in various accounting functions, most recently as the Associate Director of Corporate Accounting, Consolidations and Restructuring. After retiring, she taught the graduate Accounting Information Systems (AIS)

course and Consolidations as a GA at UC. She currently teaches AIS, financial ac-counting, and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS).

OHIO STATE BOARD OF ACCOUNTANCY MEETING The Ohio State Board of Accountancy met at UC’s Alumni Center on September 9, 2016. Over 100 students were able to observe various parts of the meeting. A student-focused hour of speakers in-cluded Colleen Conrad, Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer, NASBA, and Laura Hay, Executive Vice-President of the Ohio Society of CPAs (OSCPA).

CPA PASS RATES ON THE RISE Among University of Cincinnati graduates taking the CPA exam for the first time, pass rates increased on each section of the Uniform Certified Public Accountant Examination from 2015 to 2016.

The Alpha Sigma Chapter (UC) received desig-nation as a Superior Chapter at the Summer 2016 National Meet-ing in Baltimore, Maryland. On campus, 42 recruiting organi-zations attended the Fall 2016 Meet The Firms Night sponsored by Beta Alpha Psi. Molly Rog-ers is the faculty advisor.

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF BLACK ACCOUNTANTS (NABA)

Students and faculty advisor Raqule Crawley attended the 2016 National Meeting in Mil-waukee, Wisconsin.

 

SELECTED AWARD AND RECOGNITION DESCRIPTIONS Ohio Society of Certified Public Accountants (OSCPA) Scholarships: The Ohio CPA Foundation awards $2,000 scholarships: Statewide College Scholarships are awarded on merit. The Clarke Price Scholarship is awarded in honor of the retired president and CEO of The Ohio Society of CPAs. Recipients exemplify the qualities and characteristics that reflect his legacy: leadership, innovation and commitment. The Carl H. Lindner Honors-PLUS program: A challenging honors program in the LCB. The program is designed for highly motivated individuals with superior academic ability and demonstrated leadership skills. All receive a scholarship that covers full (in-state) tuition. Kolodzik Business Scholars: A community of LCB Honors students that capitalize on the opportunities both in the university and professional setting, surpassing expectations fueled by administrative support. KBS students are highly self-motivated to become specialized in their field of interest, to pursue the highest academic standards, and to enhance their repu-tation. The Business Fellows program: Serves underrepresented students and offers academic, professional and social support through mentoring, career planning guidance and peer rein-forcement. Students have access to a network of resources for African American, Hispanic and Native American students in order to open up opportunities and ensure success at Lindner and beyond. Graduate Incentive Scholarship: About half of our MS Accounting Program Students receive this scholarship, which is based on high grades and/or high GMAT scores. Scholar-ships range from under $1,000 up to $8,000. Beta Alpha Psi: An international organization for accounting, finance and information sys-tems students, Beta Alpha Psi encourages and recognizes scholastic and professional ex-cellence in the business information field, promotes the study and practice of account-ing, finance, and information systems.

National Association of Black Accountants: The National Association of Black Ac-countants (NABA, Inc.), is dedicated to bridging the opportunity gap for people of color in the Accounting, Finance, Consulting, and Information Technology professions. Represent-ing more than 200,000 people of color in these fields, NABA, Inc. advances people, ad-vances careers and advances the mission by providing education and meaningful career connections to both professional and student members, fulfilling the principle of our mot-to: Lifting As We Climb. David C. Burns Book Award Scholarship The David C. Burns Book Award Scholarship provides financial assistance to University of Cincinnati (UC) MS Accounting and MS Taxation students who completed their under-graduate accounting degree at UC and plan to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA). This award is funded by donations to the Department of Accounting’s Department Head Discretionary Fund. This Award is intended to encourage UC undergraduate accounting students to earn an MS Accounting or MS Tax degree at UC by helping to defray the high cost of accounting textbooks.

Dave Burns taught almost 40 years at UC before his retirement in January 2016. Dr. Burns was the Ernst & Young Professor of Ac-counting at UC, received his MBA and DBA degrees from Indiana University, and his BBA degree from UC. He advised Beta Alpha Psi (BAP), the accounting student honorary fraternity, for more than 20 years - including 5 years organizing and performing in the student Jazz Band at the annual BAP Riverboat Cruise. His publications included a textbook, auditing teaching cases, and research arti-cles published in prestigious accounting journals. Professor Burns served as an Editor of Internal Auditing for 18 years. The David C. Burns Book Award Scholarship was estab-lished by the UC Department of Accounting to honor and remember Dave Burns. The book award amount is $500 per recipient for one year.
