Celebrating the Joy of Discovery
Banting and Best Public School is one of the most northernschools in the Toronto District School Board, located near theintersection of McCowan Road and Steeles Avenue. The schoolopened at its current site in June 1989 with a population of 358students. The school is named after two very famousCanadians, Dr. Frederick Banting and Dr. Charles Best, whodiscovered insulin in 1921.At Banting and Best P.S., we enablestudents to become productive, contributing members ofCanadian society by providing a balanced curriculum in asupportive environment.

Here childrenbuild on the skills that they arelearning at home: creativity,helpfulness, honesty, and a sense ofresponsibility. Our dedicated teachersand staff work together to create a school that nurturesresponsibility through caring and respect. Language and LiteracyOur goal continues to be to ensure every one of our students attainsa proficient level of literacy. To this end, we offer:- a Borrow-A-Book program- leveled texts in each classroom- a school focus on improving literacy scores- a librarian to support classroom learning- ELL, HSP and ERI programs- balanced literacy programs i.e. shared and guided reading
MathematicsOur focus in mathematics is developing skills through problemsolving. To support our program we have been working on:- using manipulatives to support the classroom programs- the three part lesson- parallel tasks- communicating thinking
Working Towards PlatinumKeeping the natural environment healthy for generations to comedepends on everyone's participation. At Banting and Best, webelieve that we all can play a vital role in achieving this goal. We arevery pleased that we have achieved the "Gold StandardCertification" as part of the TDSB's EcoSchools program! We areworking hard to reach Platinum Certification this year!
Information TechnologyPreparing our students for the 21st Century is of primaryimportance to us. At Banting and Best we have:- Smartboards in our classrooms- students have access to iPads and computer carts- professional development for staff on using new technologies andsoftware- creation of a learning lab in our library with access to varioustechnologies

Student Life - Where You Belong
At Banting and Best, we believe strongly that learningoutside of the classroom is a fundamental part of the totalschool experience. We encourage our students to takeadvantage of the many co-curricular activities that are goingon throughout the year. We also offer avibrant Houseleague programme. All students areencouraged to take advantage of these opportunities. Weare also proud of our active Student Leadershipprogramme. Students develop their leadership skills andcontribute positively to the running of the school.
What Sets Us Apart
Scientific and technological literacy is a focus in educationsystems globally. In order to develop these skills, we atBanting and Best believe, students must be provided theopportunity to understand the basic concepts of Scienceand Technology, and more importantly develop the skillsand strategies, and relate these to the society andenvironment in which they live. We are very proud of themany, varied scientific activities and clubs we offer.
Parent and Community Engagement
"It takes a village to raise a child." At Banting and Best, we are veryproud of our strong partnerships with our community. Some of theways we link with our community are through: the schooldaycare, International Language classes, trips to our local library,parent volunteers in the classroom, and cooperative educationstudents from neighbouring highschools. Aisling Discoveries andToronto Public Health continue to partner with us. Currently ourPublic Health Nurse is offering parenting courses, and individualsupport to our students and teachers. We continue to work with ourlocal Police department to provide educational programs on streetsafety, bullying, and internet safety. We also have a SettlementWorker to help our many newly arrived families get established andaccess resources in our community.
Imagine a TDSB where all schools share a common core set of characteristics. They arecommunity-driven and focused on teaching and learning. Students and parents have a wide variety ofopportunities and there are enough students in every school to increase program choices. Imagine there is a clear focus on achieving student success and every student is engaged, has a voice,access to a caring adult and the opportunity to develop their full potential. Here at the TDSB our focus is on student achievement, parent and community engagement and financialstability.
