    Master Thesis Abstract

Vietnam took a decade to succeed in fighting high inflation since transforming its command economytoward a more market-oriented one in the late 1980s. In recent years, the inflation has risen again. Thispaper aims at investigating the main causes of high inflation by taking the approach of the extended

P-star model. Using the quarterly data for the period 1995Q22007Q2, I found that the foreign pricegap (the deviation between the domestic prices and the foreign determined equilibrium prices) exhibitsa higher explanatory power than the domestic price gap (the deviation between the actual prices andthe long-run equilibrium prices). The finding suggests that management of exchange rate regime is thekeystone for curbing inflation.
