“Eternal Rest Grant Unto Them, O Lord . . .”

From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, Baptism of the Lord: After celebrating the heart-warming birthday of Jesus at Christmas, we meditated on the Holy Family and the Epiphany. Our families will do well in modeling themselves on the Holy Family. When Jesus is present in our families, we have everything, all the strength, grace, and courage we need to face anything. Epiphany prepared us for the conviction that Jesus is Lord for all the nations and cultures and that we are all called to help reveal Jesus to our families, neighborhoods, and the whole world. We are moving along briskly on the journey with Christ. Now we have come to the Baptism of the Lord as he begins his public ministry. In Mark’s gospel today, as Jesus is being baptized we see the presence of the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove and the Heavenly Father who says, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” There are some insights that we can dwell on. 1. Jesus is guided by the Holy Spirit and is always eager to do his Fa-ther’s will. We could follow Jesus in this regard. 2. Jesus did not need the baptism and yet he goes through it as a way of inserting himself into our humanity and vulnerabil-ity. Jesus’ incarnational participation in our human nature begun at his nativity continues at his baptism. 3. Jesus is called, anointed, and sent by his Father to bring new life and hope to the whole world. We too are called to fulfill the purpose for which God has brought us into the world. 4. Each of us is God’s “beloved son or daughter.” God is “well pleased” with us. So let’s not go about carrying guilt or hopelessness. Our God is a happy god who is happy with us, despite our sinfulness. It’s precisely because of God’s being “well pleased” with us that we can turn our ways around to his. 5. Like Jesus, each of us was baptized to walk a new journey of grace and holiness. How are we do-ing in that regard? Is our baptismal anointing and empow-erment still working in our lives? The Baptism of the Lord is an occasion for us to take stock of our lives. The Word of God and Homily in the Mass: I come across sometimes good Catholics who would like to attend Mass as quickly as possible and get back home or wherever they are going. They give the impression that if there is no Word of God and homily, they would be happier because that way they could get to communion as quickly as possi-ble and go home. The Mass is ended, go in peace! Since we take the trouble after all of getting out of bed, giving up certain morning comforts and of being in the church, why not make an attempt at what the Word of God is challeng-ing us to do and be. The Second Vatican Council over sixty years ago came up in its document called “Dei Ver-bum” (God’s Word) with a vision about the importance of the Word of God. The misunderstanding that the Protestants took the Bible with them and we Catholics took the sacraments had to be dispelled. We Catholics are peo-

ple of the Word and the Eucharist. That’s why each Mass is a union of the Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. We cannot celebrate the Eucharist without first hearing, meditating and interpreting the Word of God. How many of us really pay attention to the Word of God? Hear-ing the Word of God and having it interpreted wakes us up from our at-times passive way of attending Mass. The pur-pose of the homily is to make some connection between the Word of God and life, and to let the scriptures come alive. We need to make a more serious effort at staying with the Word of God and exploring what it means for our lives, our families, and the world. God after all speaks to us through these scriptures. Remember how Jesus faces his three temptations by falling back on the scriptures. You may also recall how Jesus interprets the scriptures to the Emmaus disciples before he breaks the bread with them. When we go away from Mass, the questions we could be asking are: what did the Word of God interpreted in the homily speak to me for my life today? How can I be a better person and Catholic because of God’s message for me today? Mass is not a passive ritual but a dynamic form of worship at which our mind (by being enlightened) and the heart (by being in communion with Jesus) are “nourished”. There is an exam-ple of how the Word of God changed a man completely. St. Ignatius of Loyola kept asking Francis Xavier at the Uni-versity of Paris in the 1530s: “What does it profit someone to gain the whole world and forfeit one’s soul?” Francis Xavier gave up his wordly ambitions, joined the first group of Jesuits, and became the greatest missionary second only to St. Paul. Capital Campaign Update: We still have Phase III to complete. It’s to re-pave the upper parking lot. If you are able to donate to this project, we can finish it by summer of 2015. If your name is not on the chart in the vestibule, maybe you can think about sponsoring 100 or 200 or 300 square feet of pavement work. Here’s the update coming from Terri Ciardella: “Check out the pavement chart on the wall in the vestibule. The squares are beginning to add up......we have sold 79 squares so far! That is 7900 square feet of pavement. We have quite a ways to go, so if you have not given as of yet, now is the time to join your com-munity in this group effort! We are determined to finish the project by summer, even sooner if possible. Let's get this done, piece by piece.” Saint Pope John XXIII Humor: Visiting a hospital he asked a boy what he wanted to be when he grew up. The boy said either a policeman or a pope. “I would go in for the police if I were you,” the Holy Father said. “Anyone can become a pope, look at me!” Your Friend & Pastor, Father Charles Puthota

Thank you for your Generosity!

Once again, participants in the St. Veronica Giving Angel went above and beyond in helping our neighbors in need during the Advent season. Our parishioners donated more than 140 gift cards valued at more than $3,000! Additionally, more than 60 beautifully wrapped gifts were re-ceived.

The Giving Angel supports Catherine Center, the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen, Catholic Hospitality House, and our own St. Vincent de Paul pantry. In addition to the monetary donations, our St. Vincent de Paul pantry received dozens and dozens of non-perishable food items which will benefit the more than 30 clients who receive monthly food assistance. Keep in mind that the need for help doesn’t end with the Christmas season. Our St. Vincent de Paul pantry accepts non-perishable food donations throughout the year.

Seeking Mass Ushers

Looking for an easy ministry to become involved in at St. Veronica? Consider becoming a Mass usher. The ministry is open to men and women, teens and adults.

Training will be provided. Ushers greet our parishioners and guests as they enter the Church before Mass, assist with seating peo-ple during Mass, take up the collection, and hand out bulletins at the end of Mass. Interested parties may call the Pastoral Center office at 650-588-1455 to submit their name.

Hospitality Anyone? The Hospitality Team welcomes new members to help out with Sunday Morning Hospitality. They pro-vide coffee, juice, doughnuts and other goodies to parish-ioners following the 8:00 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. Masses. If you enjoy meeting with your fellow parishioners while also providing service to our parish community, call the Parish Office to submit your name and phone number so our Hospitality chair-persons can contact you.

Prayer for the Year of Consecrated Life Pope Francis has declared Liturgical Year 2015 the “Year of Consecrated Life” and asks the faithful to keep the call for vo-cations in their prayers: “O God, throughout the ages you have called women and men to pursue lives of perfect charity through the evangelical coun-sels of poverty, chastity, and obedience. During this Year of Consecrated Life, we give you thanks for these courageous witnesses of Faith and models of inspiration. Their pursuit of holy lives teaches us to make a more perfect offering of our-selves to you. Continue to enrich your Church by calling forth sons and daughters who, having found the pearl of great price, treasure the Kingdom of Heaven above all things. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.”

Reflecting on the Word Baptism of the Lord We often think about baptism in terms of the washing away of sin. Sometimes we speak of it as dying and rising with Christ. These ways of think-ing and speaking about what happens in baptism are true and important. But reflection on the event of Jesus’ baptism opens up new perspectives on our own baptism. In baptism we, like Jesus, are anoint-ed with God’s Spirit and declared to be God’s be-loved sons and daughters, with whom God is well pleased. In baptism too we see the heavens torn open and the ways of God made manifest to us. In baptism we too conquer the world through faith. Also in baptism we, like Jesus, are given a commission. The Spirit anoints us as priests, proph-ets, and kings; in these roles we are called to lives of prayer, proclamation, and service. We are called, as the prophet Isaiah exhorts us, to “seek the Lord while he may be found” and to “call on him while he is near.” In other words, in our baptism we are giv-en a share in the saving work of Jesus. Of course, this can seem quite daunting. It is daunting to think that every child or adult who is baptized is given the task of sharing in Jesus’ priest-ly, prophetic, and royal ministries. Lest we become overwhelmed, we must also remember that at Jesus’ baptism the heavens are torn open and the Spirit is poured out. We do nothing on our own. We do all through God’s Spirit.

For prayerful consideration and discussion: ♦ How do I concretely share in Jesus’ ministry of

prayer, proclamation, and service? - from Living the Word
