IMMACULATE HEART OF MARY JANUARY 12, 2020
From the Pastor’s Desk
Once again, happy and healthy new year everyone! What a joy to be here at IHM for our Christmas celebrations and all during this beautiful season which draws to a close today on the feast of the Baptism of the Lord. Special thanks to all who contributed in so many ways to make these weeks so great and also to make visitors feel very welcome. Thanks, too, for your generos-ity and kindness in remembering the parish with your special Christmas gift that really helps us with our expenses and bills. Again, thank you so much!
Lately, I have had Ireland on my mind and that’s because one of our pa-rishioners, Phyllis Attisani. Phyllis has been giving me some wonderful books on Irish culture and the Irish people. One of them is entitled An Irish Christmas Feast: The Best of John B. Keane. It is a delightful book filled with very funny stories about the people in County Kerry and their sometimes strange and fun-ny customs. Keane was a playwright and very popular Irish author. Thank you Phyllis! I have had Ireland on my mind also because of a number of anniver-saries of death, in particular my Uncle Denis, or as we called him D.D. I was reminiscing about his funeral that I celebrated in that lovely little church St. Peter’s in a town called Rock Chapel. It is a beautiful little gem serving a small farming community whom I have come to know over the years. They always manage to impress me with their deep faith and their humility. Even though the Church in Ireland has been devas-tated and is rightly experiencing deep shame and remorse for the abuses that have taken place throughout the country at the hands of priests and Religious, there in that small Church commu-nity one can find such a vibrant and lovely expression of faith, not to mention such kindness and friendship extended to my aunt and my family.
After the funeral, the whole Church accompanied the coffin to the cemetery up the road. The dates on many of the tombstones went back as far as the 1800’s. My uncle’s coffin was laid into the grave where my grandparents are buried. We then said a decade of the Rosary and later met in the parish community center for refreshments. Afterwards, for most of that week, I stayed on the farm with my Aunt Joan. When we were little, my brothers and I would spend our entire summers on the farm working hard and playing even harder! Tons of good memories filled my heart as I walked the long road of my aunt’s farm and prayed my breviary. I was so happy, with his busy schedule and all, the dog could accompany me every day!
In my prayers, I also felt a certain sadness in saying goodbye to my last living uncle and to all who have passed on over the years since my childhood. For some irrational reason, I think I was half-hoping to see everything stay the same, the aunts and uncles, the lively conversations, the fun on the farm, etc. But no, while everything around was as beautiful as ever, the reality of my aunt living all alone now on the farm, the hushed quiet in the inactive yard, the fewer animals around, the presence of too many loud crows, all these things brought my spirits a little down.
But then, I thought of the invitation from the Lord to trust all the more in his love, his plan, his refreshing rest. It was a challenge but I began to realize that even as all around me seemed to grow old, move on or even pass on, especially there in those thoughts, was I invited to appreciate the gift of God’s love, God’s presence, God’s care. Celebrating a second Mass in the parish for Sunday, I was once again reminded of the good that happens when the faithful gather and pray to together. It was very uplifting. When a young fellow of ten years or so came into the sacristy after the Mass and introduced himself as Kevin, I asked him if he would like to be a priest one day. He said, “No. I would like to be a paleontologist!” That’s a first for me! Later, I thought of the irony. Here I was deep in thoughts about the past with much nostalgia in my heart and this little fellow couldn’t wait to interact with the past with great excitement!
Now back to that book by Keane!

RENEW + REBUILD CORNER
Welcome to 2020, a New Year of Resolutions and a Review of 2019.
Our Renew + Rebuild Resolution is to use your contributions to implement the “Pressing Needs” that were listed in our campaign. While many im-provements will not be obvious, such as repairing the roofs and updating electricity, every day we see the obvious worn carpet and the leaking from our beautiful rose windows. While we would like to correct these immediately, we have to follow a sequence of first choosing and vetting of vendors and then preparing the capital plan. We will con-tinue to keep you updated.
A Review of 2019 includes the following Renew + Rebuild yearend update of 2019’s Pledged and Collected contributions.

FEASTS AND CELEBRATIONS Jan. 12 – The Baptism of the Lord (1st century). Jesus began his public ministry by getting baptized by St. John the Baptist. Jesus was free of sin, but he allowed himself to be baptized in order to “fulfill all right-eousness” (Matthew 3:15). By his baptism, Jesus declared his willing-ness to fulfill God’s saving plan.

THANK YOU FROM HOPE COMMUNITY SERVICES, INC.
NEW ROCHELLE, NY
Dear Reverend Thomas Lynch,
We are writing this letter to express our deepest thanks for your recent contribution to HOPE’s 2019 Holiday Give out Event by donating toys, hats, gloves, and jackets.
This donation is very important to us. It enables us to continue in our mission to bring HOPE to the table and lives of our neighbors in need.
HOPE is committed to feeding the most vulnera-ble residents of New Rochelle through our Soup kitchen and Food Pantry. However, HOPE does more than offer emergency food services. We also provide housing programs, citizenship clas-ses, and school supplies, among other programs. As we continue and expand our services to the community, we are acutely aware that we cannot do so without your support.
Once again, on behalf of all of us, clients, staff and board of directors, THANK YOU and Happy New Year!
Sincerely, Walter J. Ritz Executive Director

Our unit is mul-ticomponent. (Army, Navy, Ma-rines, and Air Force) and multina-tional (over 70 partner nations), and our mission is simple, to defeat Daesh (ISIS). So you’re supporting and blessing the lives of Warriors from across our nation and across our world engaged in combat against a brutal enemy. This fight matters and you matter. You encourage our hearts to keep us in the fight. Thank you for your service, your sacrifice and your support. May God bless you, your work is not in vain.

Catholic Guidance for End-of-Life Decision Making
End-of-life decisions, for our-selves and for loved ones, are among the most challenging we will ever face. There is a movement in our nation to legalize assisted suicide, but that is a false an-swer and is a dangerous experiment. Our Church offers comfort and practical guidance to live and die with dignity. Visit www.CatholicEndofLife.org to watch the video and read the New York State Bishops’ document “Now and at the Hour of Our Death.” Learn why the Church favors palliative medicine and comfort care, and why the Church opposes physician-assisted suicide. WHY ARE CATHOLICS CALLED “CATHOLIC”?
“Catholic” means “universal.” In the Greek, it also means “wholeness” or “fullness.” First-ly, the Church is catholic be-cause her members have a uni-versal mission. Jesus command-ed his Apostles to “go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them” (Matthew 28:19). Secondly, the Church is catholic because, being founded by Christ and united to him, her members have the “correct and complete confession of faith, full sacramen-tal life, and ordained ministry in apostolic suc-cession” (Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) #830).
