he Colorado Law community has a long and proud tradition o paying it orward,or investing in the lives o others with the belie that the people they help will oneday do the same. When he came to Colorado Law in 1999, Dan Barash(02) was

interested in becoming a prosecutor. During law school, Dan became involved in the Crim-

inal Deense Clinic and the Wrongul Convictions Clinic o the Legal Aid and DeenderProgram, and gradually came to the conclusion that he wanted to devote his legal career toserving the poor and underrepresented. Dan loved Colorado; afer graduation he became adeputy public deender in El Paso County, where he worked or nearly two years beore hisuntimely death at age 30.

While his career in public service was cut short, Dans legacy was only just beginning. ohonor Dans commitment to the rights o the underserved, his amily established the DanBarash Scholarship Fund in 2004, with the goal o helping to support law students in Col-orado Laws Legal Aid and Deender Program who intended to become public deenders.Te first scholarship o $1,000 was awarded in 2005, but the amily had high hopes o grow-ing the und to one day support two or more scholarship per year. Dans ather, Paul, writespersonal notes on every letter that is mailed, and his brothers Dave and Jed ollow up withpersonal thank you notes to each contributor. Teir message is simple: Help us continue

Dans legacy o paying it orward.Te Barash amilys commitment is helping in an amazing way: Tis year, the Dan BarashScholarship awarded two Colorado Law students with $14,000 each. Since its inception, theund has grown to an endowment approaching $750,000with contributions rom morethan 1,000 donors. Incredibly, more than $100,000 has been awarded to students who arecommitted to ollowing Dans path o service as public deenders. As Dans brother Davidsaid, Te scholarship is changing lives; or these students, it helps make being a publicdeender a financially viable career option.

Over Homecoming and Reunion Weekend in November 2012, David hosted a dinner or10 o the 15 total recipients o the Barash Scholarship, many o whom he has correspond-ed with over the years. It was wonderul to hear how they are carrying on Dans legacy,Barash said. I can hear their passion, their energy or serving those in need. David alsomet with Dans classmates rom the class o 2002, who chose to honor Dan at their reunion

by contributing to the scholarship und as a class. I can see why Dan had so many riends atColorado Law, and why so many o them have supported the scholarship, David remarked.Teyre just good olks, and we had a great time sharing our stories and memories o Dan.In support o the class o 2002s undraising effort, both the Barash amily and CU Chan-cellor Phil DiStefanoprovided matching gifs to the scholarship in recognition o the classhitting a 20 percent participation rate.
