THE DEATH OF AN EVANGELICAL TITAN by Bishop Robert Barron I had the privilege of hearing Dr. Billy Graham preach about twenty years ago in Cincinna . At the me, Dr. Graham was around eighty years old and clearly in frail health. He came to the podium and commenced to speak, but the crowd of young people, s rred up by the Chris an rock bands who had performed earlier, was res ve and ina en ve. Graham paused, folded his hands, and quietly said, “Let us pray.” With that, a stadium of fi y thousand people fell silent. Once a spirit of reverence held sway, the preacher resumed. I remember thinking, “What an old pro!” That old pro, arguably the greatest Chris an evangelist of the past hundred years, died this week at ninety-nine, and it’s difficult to overstate his impact and importance. It is said that he directly addressed 215 million people in 185 countries in the course of his ministry. No other preacher, in the en re history of Chris anity, has had such a range. At the height of his powers, he filled arenas and stadiums, for weeks at at me, in some of the most jaded, materialis c, and skep cal ci es in the world. And when preachers and other religious celebri es all around him were falling into scandal and corrup on, Billy Graham stood tall, a man of integrity. His moral heroism was on par cularly clear display in the early years of the civil rights movement. Especially in his na ve South, it was the unques oned prac ce to seat black people in segregated sec ons of churches and arenas. Though it cost him quite a few of his tradi onal supporters, Graham insisted that his crusades should be racially integrated. Impressed by this show of courage, Mar n Luther King Jr. became a friend and appeared with Graham at a crusade in 1957. What was it about his preaching that was so compelling? I suppose in his early years, he demonstrated a fair amount of “flash,” prowling the stage, waving his arms, and moving drama cally from whispering to shou ng. But as he matured, a fair amount of that theatricality faded away. What remained was a gentle sense of humor (usually self-depreca ng), an obvious sincerity, a keen intelligence, and above all, a clarity in regard to the essen als of the Gospel. Prac cally every Billy Graham sermon had the same basic structure: you have sought happiness in wealth, pleasure, material things, fame, etc., and you’ve never been sa sfied; I want to tell you about what will make you happy. At this point, he would speak of Christ crucified and risen from the dead. Now please don’t get me wrong—and don’t write me le ers! As a Catholic, I affirm that there is more to salva on than accep ng Jesus Christ in faith; there is the full integra on into the life of Christ that happens through the instrumentality of the Church and her sacraments. Nevertheless, Catholics and Protestants come together in asser ng—as Billy Graham consistently did—that we are sinners who stand in need of Christ’s saving grace. In point of fact, a generous ecumenism was one of the marks of Billy Graham’s approach. It didn’t bother him in the least if someone whose religious journey commenced at one of his crusades con nued and came to fulfillment in the Catholic Church. Much has been made of his rela onship with presidents, monarchs, and prime ministers. He did indeed minister personally to twelve US presidents, and the wonderful Ne lix series The Crown shows something of the impact he had on Queen Elizabeth II. But I’ve never been par cularly taken with this dimension of Graham’s life, which seemed, to me anyway, more sizzle than steak. In fact, one of the low points of his career had to have been his meek acquiescence to Richard Nixon’s an -Semi c musings, captured on White House tapes. To his credit, Dr. Graham repeatedly apologized for that lapse. He was far more powerful and spiritually efficacious when he prayed over the thousands of ordinary people who had responded to an altar call at the close of a crusade. When I started my own evangelical ministry, Word on Fire, some twenty years ago, I drew some very prac cal inspira on from Billy Graham. In his autobiography, Just As I Am, Graham stated that, as he was ge ng his ministry underway, he told his colleagues that three things tend to undermine an evangelist’s work: trouble with sex, trouble with alcohol, or trouble with money. They were all to endeavor, he said, to avoid these three traps. When I met with the Word on Fire board for the first me, I relayed this story, and I commented, “I’ll take care of the sex and the alcohol, you take care of the money!” I love the story of Billy Graham’s first encounter with my evangelical hero, Fulton J. Sheen. These two tans of preaching were on the same train from Washington to New York. Sheen found out about Graham’s presence, and he knocked on the door of the Protestant’s berth and said, “Billy, I wonder whether we might have a chat and a prayer?” Though he was preparing for bed, Billy Graham acquiesced and the two of them spent several hours in spiritual conversa on—the beginning of a friendship that endured un l Sheen’s death. I’ve always taken great pleasure in that image of brotherhood across denomina onal lines. I believe that anyone who reverences the Chris an Gospel owes Billy Graham a debt of gra tude. Requiescat in pace.

Our Prayer Together – The Mass

A prayerful study of our worship

together each week, with Fr. Albert Judy, O.P.

Mondays, Febuary 26, March 5, and 19 St. Ferdinand Church, 7:00 – 8:15 pm

Six years ago we observed The Year of the Mass. I spent most of the year preaching about the parts of the Mass, their source, symbolism and significance. This Lent I hope to return to this most important theme for all of us: the words we say and the devo on they call for, when we pray together at Mass each weekend. By reflec ng on the parts of the Mass in slow mo on, like instant replay, we can deepen our understanding of the greatness of what is happening and how we can more fully enter into this “mystery of faith.” — Fr. Albert Judy, O.P. The schedule: Mar 5. “The Obla on” … The Eucharis c Prayer(s). Mar 12. No session. Mar 19. “The Banquet of the Lamb” … Holy Communion. Mar 5. The Obla on … The Eucharis c Prayer(s)

Collec on, Offertory, gi s and blessings.

Preface of Thanksgiving, the Holy Holy, Epiclesis.

Words of Ins tu on, gestures, acclama ons, Anamnesis, Intercessions

Doxology and our Great Amen. All are welcome.

Lent: fasting in the church By Joseph F. Kelly | Catholic News Service Fas ng is a method that people can use to limit or deny their physical desires for a higher, o en spiritual, goal. Fas ng was widely prac ced among the ancient Jews, usually before important feast days. It was also prac ced by disciples of John the Bap st. As a Jew, Jesus would have fasted, his disciples likewise fasted, and the earliest Chris ans followed in that path. The New Testament speaks of fas ng, but the Bible and other early sources simply do not include many sta s cs. Ini ally fas ng was not universal. Yet Jesus’ example would win out, and the early Chris ans decided that they also would fast. By the second century, Wednesday and Saturday were treated as fast days in individual churches. As fas ng became increasingly accepted, the early Chris ans decided to follow the Old Testament prac ce of fas ng before major feast days. For the believers, the most important feast day was Easter, commemora ng the Resurrec on because, as the apostle Paul had said, “If Christ has not been raised, (our) faith is vain” (1 Cor 15:17). The supreme feast deserved a preparatory fast. The ini al pre-Easter fast was only a few days, and Chris an leaders soon concluded that such a brief me did not adequately presage so crucial a feast. They looked to the Gospels and decided to imitate the Lord by having a fast of 40 days. This widespread prac ce was approved by the bishops of the first ecumenical council, Nicaea, in 325, thus making Lent a universal prac ce. The ini al observance of the fast was very demanding. Chris ans could eat only one full meal per day. Many churches forbade the consump on of meat, fish, eggs and delicacies at the risk of viola ng the spiritual value of the fast. The churches soon developed liturgical prac ces to go along with Lent, believing self-denial to be spiritually important but

insufficient. The bishops introduced the prac ce of almsgiving. If one wished to do more than just deny bodily sa sfac on, giving to the poor was a posi ve, prac cal way to do so since it effec vely involved self-denial.

Another — but quite modern — form of self-denial was depriving one’s self of some personal enjoyment, such as not going to a movie or a spor ng event and dona ng the funds to a charity. Simply making larger than usual dona ons to charity would also be a form of self-denial. Some modern Catholics ques on the value of self-denial during Lent, since retailers make Easter a secular holiday that leads young believers, caught up in the secularity before Easter, to have difficulty with the religious aspects of Lent. But modern secular values cannot triumph over a feast that is two millennia old. Every so o en, we must say “No” to such a travesty. When religious people fast, they know why they do so, and they are reminded of the good reason for the prac ce.

O n Friday, January 26th - Bishop John R. Manz Confirmed 38 can-didates from our St. Ferdinand Catholic School and Religious Educa on Program. Please keep them in your prayers as they

embark on the next phase of their Faith Journey. Confirma on is not an end but a con nua on. Receiving the Sacrament of Confirma on means being sent on a mis-sion by the Church for Christ. Being confirmed is essen ally a mutual "yes" declared by God and by the one who received the Sacrament of Confirma on. The one being confirmed asserts the faith of their Bap-

sm, and asks for the gi of the Holy Spirit that he or she may never be separated from God. God, for his part, affirms His belief in each one of us, and gives us the gi of His very self, promising to stay with us and to help us do all that He has called us to do. It takes the ini al choice to follow Christ in Bap sm a step further: recognizing that each Chris an has a dis nc ve role to play in the Kingdom of God. The Newly-Confirmed want to thank all who made the celebra on of Confirma on this day possible, who helped them on their journey of Chris an faith and those who prepared this celebra on and recep on. A special "Thank You" to Bp. John Manz, our Pastor Fr. Jason Torba, Fr. Pawel Adamus, Seminarian Sebas an Zebrowski, Br. James, Catechists, Assistant Catechists, and Teachers.

Jeśli cię ono paraliżuje trzeba wytrwale i cierpliwie odzyskiwać wolność. Dlatego nie rozpaczaj

i nie dręcz samego siebie, lecz zaufaj Bożemu miłosierdziu. Dariusz Piórkowski SJ

In The Princess Bride, Count Rugen (the bad guy) tells Westley (the good guy) to come along so that Rugen’s men can take Westley to his ship, and freedom. Knowing that this is fabrica on, Westley answers, "We are men of ac on. Lies do not become us." The words came to mind the other day while listening to Fr. John Kartje, the speaker at our Holy Name Society’s Lenten Morning of Recollec on. Addressing masculine spirituality, he spoke of choosing jus ce over looking good for the sake of looking good. He spoke of embracing truth over poli cal correctness. Mostly, he spoke of favoring ac on over contempla on. This flowed from Fr. Kartje’s earlier comments that men and women are created differently. For one thing, men tend to be more ac on-oriented, while women tend to be more though ul and reflec ve. I smiled, and at the break, I told a friend how I’d witnessed this decades ago when my wife and I threw a party for our daughter and her friends. A er placing clues around the house leading to a treasure chest, I told Sarah and the rest that they should to come to me for the first clue, which would lead them to theother clues, and ul mately, the prize. Which is just what the li le girls did. The li le boys, however, bolted this way and that shou ng, “To the treasure!” The memory s ll ckles me. “We are men of ac on…” This is the point Fr. Kartje drove home over and over, but he did not negate the importance of quiet me, holding up Jesus himself as the perfect example of masculine spirituality.

The New Testament is rife with accounts of Jesus reaching out to the marginalized. But the Book is rife also with accounts of Jesus retrea ng away to a quiet place to pray. O en the crowd wouldn’t leave him alone, and Jesus never turned them away, but he s ll needed quiet me again and again to be a man of ac on. Fr. Kartje pointed specifically here to Jesus heading into the Garden to pray before undergoing his Passion, an ac on-packed day if there ever wasone. Well in advance of that day, though, came the cleansing of the temple. While it may be academically interes ng that Ma hew, Mark, and Luke all put the cleansing nearer the end of Jesus’ ministry while John in today’s Gospel puts it nearer the beginning, the important thing in the context of Fr. Kartje’s talk is that Jesus is once more a man of ac on when he finds in the temple merchants selling oxen, sheep and doves. Check it out. “He made a whip out of cords and drove them out of the temple area…and spilled the coins of the money changers and overturned their tables…” John writes that the disciples recall the words of Scripture, “Zeal for your house will consume me.” OK. I go to church on Sunday’s, but how much zeal do I have--really--for the faith? That’s rhetorical for all of you, but soul-searching for me, as it should be for each of us in turn. We have to be “brutally honest” with ourselves in this soul-searching, though (a term that Fr. Kartje used more than once), because Westley was right. We are men of ac on, a er all. Lies do not become us…
