Dear Parents, Guardians, & Friends, At the start of the new school year we offer a warm welcome to all our community. We were delighted that the hard work of the staff and students paid off with the improved examination results. However, we were more pleased with the way our young people developed into responsible and caring members of society. They have set the standard for the rest of the school. We look forward to helping to shape the new Year 7 students who have made such an excellent start on their academic journey with us. Being over-subscribed again, means that we now need to look at the size of the school and whether we are ready to return to our original number. Just a reminder that, should you wish to use photographs or pictures relating to pupils and staff at All Saints’, you need to obtain written permission from myself. On behalf of the Governors and all the staff, I thank you for your continued support as we all strive to “Luceat Lux Vestra”. Regards, Mr McNally Headteacher As we begin the new school year I would like to congratulate Seth Broomfield 11 MT and Tara Rowen 11MT on being elected as Head Boy and Head Girl. Also, congratulations go to Chris Cocklin 11MT and Emily Fletcher 11T as they are named Deputy Head Boy and Deputy Head Girl. Finally, well done also to Ryan Murphy 11A, Xena Munby 11R, Georgia Stenton 11T and Luke Davies 11MT who were each appointed as Head of House. The pupils were selected to be interviewed and on the successful completion of the interview the positions were allocated. Mr T. On the last day of summer term, 38 pupils and four members of staff set off on a thirty hour coach journey to Tossa de Mar in Catalonia, Spain. The jam-packed itinerary included a trip to the Nou Camp, home of Barcelona Football Club, Parc Guell, one of the major works of the artist, Gaudi, as well as a day at Port Aventura. Here, many of our pupils took the chance to ride Shambhala, which, with a maximum height of 249 feet and reaching speeds of 83.3mph, is the tallest and fastest rollercoaster in Europe. Pupils were also able to explore the surrounding area, taking in the sights of local towns and relaxing on the beach, or by the hotel pool on the last day before climbing back onto the coach and beginning our long journey

back to Rossendale. Everyone had a wonderful time and the pupils were a credit to our school and to themselves. We would like to thank everyone involved in this fantastic trip.

Hello my name is Alexandra and I am in Year 9. This summer I went on the Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes with two other pupils in my year, Emily Farr and Billy Delaney, as we joined the Under 16s group. It was described to us by pupils who represented the school last summer and it sounded like an amazing opportunity so I was really interested in going. We had an action packed week and it was definitely worth the 30 hour coach trip we made to get down there. Our role in Lourdes was to carry the Diocesan and youth banner in every Mass and service as well as lead all the processions. While we were there we met some great people and made lots of new friends. A lady called Lorna was one of them and she delighted in telling us many stories about her trips to Lourdes and being on her 30th visit, she was proof that once you have been to Lourdes you just want to go back. The candle lit procession was a very special moment for us all when each person is given a candle as we made our way to the Rosary Basilica and took our seats on the marble staircase. All of a sudden our candles went out as we were caught in very heavy rain and many scrambled to help the sick in wheelchairs as we fought our way, some falling, through the rising water to the visitor’s centre where we realised we were missing some of the group! Initially our leader panicked but thankfully those missing had simply made their way to our hotel instead. So, Lourdes was a memorable experience and definitely worth visiting. I will hopefully be going again next year and I would like to see more of my fellow members of All Saints’ there too!

All pupils have now settled back into school life and everyone seems to be enjoying our delicious school lunches. If any pupil would like to see something different on the school menu, please see a member of the kitchen staff who will be pleased to help and discuss and new menu choices.

Spelling Bee Mrs Jeffers will also be running a Spelling Bee competition for Year 7.

Each class will be given 50 words in French or Spanish, depending on the language they are learning. Pupils will need to learn how to spell them and what they mean. They will be tested around half term and the class winners (2 boys and 2 girls) will win a prize and will also then be given

50 more words to learn. The winners from each class will then compete against each other so that

we will get an overall winner (individual and class) in each of the languages.

Following last year’s successful visit to the Loire Valley in France, the MFL department is planning to run the trip again next year. The trip will be open to Year 8 and 9 pupils and will take place during the first week in July 2015. Pupils will be staying in a hotel for three nights and meals will be provided. We plan to spend one day in the Futuroscope science theme park and there will also be the possibility of visiting a French market, a chocolaterie and maybe a visit to the beautiful town of La Rochelle. It is a fantastic opportunity for pupils and everyone who has taken part in the trip, both last year and the year before, had a very enjoyable time. The cost will be in the region of £350. This includes all transport costs from school and back, three nights full board accommodation, entry to the theme park and activity costs for the second day. Letters are available now for all pupils who are interested and deposits have already started to come in. We are also planning to run a trip to the Christmas markets in Lille for our new Year 7 pupils. This will leave school on Saturday 22nd November, spending the night in a hotel in Lille on Sunday 23rd November and returning to school on Monday 24th November. Pupils will spend time at the local Christmas markets and there will also be the possibility of visiting a waffle factory, a boulangerie and a French hypermarket. We expect it to be a very enjoyable experience for all who take part.

During the first week of term, 7R Science were set a piece of homework to create a 3D model plant or animal cell. This involved listing the structures and explaining their functions. The work that pupils produced was by far the best I've ever seen by a year 7 class. Well done 7 Romero, keep up the good work!

It was a pleasure to invite the newly ordained Fr Lawrence Gambella to preside at our Welcome Mass at the beginning of our new school year. He reminded us all of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Centre and highlighted the changes that day had had on the world since. Amongst other things, he spoke about the attack on western education and the threat that exists today referring to the phrase “Boko Horam” that literally means ‘no to western education’. He went on to say, “as Catholics we believe in the importance of education and that with our brains and talents we glorify God”. As the Gospel said, our light must not be hidden under a bushel; it must be lifted high so as to give light to all that is around us.

We too are like that light; we are compelled to shine so that others may too see the glory of God. The Mass was a wonderful celebration with the newly trained Eucharistic Ministers being commissioned by Fr Mackie. New members of staff were presented with Sr Judith Russi’s book ‘How to survive working in a Catholic School’. Thanks again to Fr Lawrence for coming in. We will continue to pray for your ministry and hope you will visit us again in the near future.
