IntroductionIn fall 2011, President Jonathan Lash charged the Rehamping student group with facilitating a process

by which a decision could be made regarding how the horse barn on the President’s property could be

repurposed on the Hampshire campus. An open call for proposals brought 13 parties to describe spatial

needs they saw on campus. This document aims to contextualize each of these Barn proposals in a neutral

yet energetic way. Through the use of graphics and additional writing we hope to provide more insight into

ProposalprogrAm: tell us why you are interested in using the barn for your needs. feel free to use the following questions as a guideline. what is the primary intended use for the barn? what is the rela-tionship between this use and your existing space? will it supplant your existing space (if you have one) or add to it? how will the barn enhance your present offerings, capabilities, etc?

This proposal is for an Activist Barn that would provide shared meeting and organizing space for

creating more handcraft groups, such as a woodworking group, and we hope that this proposal, if selected,

could help to bring groups such as these to life.

Hampshire has always been about applying skill and knowledge to the real world – our motto

If for some reason you think that only one of the groups should get the barn, that is of course

acceptable. This seems unlikely however, as neither of us requires the full space and we would welcome the

chance to work together.

I propose that the barn be used as a 24/7 quiet study space. Students have many complaints with the

fosters social interaction and above-quiet noise levels). This would also give us a chance to design a quiet study

space from the ground up taking into consideration people’s comments and complaints with the APL.

building: tell us how you imagine the interior of the building would be arranged. feel free to use the following questions as a guideline. name the types of spaces you would need. what kinds of infrastructure would you require? (plumbing, special exhaust, etc)

At the least it would need tables and chairs conducive to studying (ie, comfortable). I do not see any

other special needs. Perhaps some sound proof meeting rooms for students to meet and do group work.

CollAborAtive progrAmming: tell us if you can imagine sharing the barn with another group. feel free to use the following questions as a guideline. what is your best guess about the hours of operation in the barn? Are there any other groups submitted with whom you would like to be considered as collaborators / cohabitors? how would sharing the space work? would sharing the space change any of your other answers on this application?

The barn would be 24/7 like the APL is. I am hesitant to say the space could be shared. Unless that

program was also very quiet, I see a cohabitated space eating up the quiet that makes the APL valuable. If it

was shared, special attention would need to be paid to make sure the study space does not become the same
