Barriers to Education

• Low self-esteem• Has never had educational success• Low aspirations • Intimidated by school building/set up• Fear of the unknown• Worried they will look stupid in front of others• Lack of crèche

& Crafts and cooking.

Why do Barnardo’s invest so much in this journey for a family?

• Barnardo's is a children charity that seeks to transform the lives of UK's most vulnerable children.

• Barnardo's believes that's every child deserves the best start in life and the chance to fulfil their potential.

• Office for National Statistics as part of an intergenerational transmission of disadvantage in the UK and EU 2014 Release states;

• Father's education level has the biggest impact on the likelihood of low educational attainment. People are 7.5 times more likely to have a low educational outcome themselves if their father has a low level of education compared with having a highly educated father.

• People are around 3 times more likely to have a low educational outcome if their mother has a low level of education.

• Educational attainment is the most important of the factors examined in explaining poverty in both the UK and other EU countries studied. In the UK those with a low level of educational attainment are almost 5 times as likely to be in poverty now as those with a high level of education.

• We need to support parents to get back into education in order to improve the life chances for their children.
