HELLO EVERYONE AND I WELCOME YOU FROM A DISTANCE.Welcome To our first league match of the season as we host Eastleigh at The Hive London.

From the Manager

Before I get into my thoughts on the season ahead, I would like to thank everyone for their warm welcome since I took charge back in August. Even though I am yet to meet our wonderful supporters in person, I have felt a lot of positivity coming from you to both myself, Steve and the rest of the lads. I am really grateful for your support and I look forward to having you back with us as soon as it’s practically possible. We will be doing everything we can to make each and every Bee fan proud this season and that starts right from the off with today’s opening match.

I would also like to welcome Ben Strevens, his staff and his players to The Hive for today’s game. Ben is also a former Bee and I know is held in high regard by our supporters, so I wish him well for the upcoming campaign. Like us, Eastleigh have recruited well over the summer and are a strong side, so it should be an exciting match this afternoon.

This summer has obviously been really busy, particularly since I took over in August. I am really pleased with the new additions to the side and I really feel they will add quality to our squad, along with the group who have stayed on from last season. We have a great balance of exciting young players, as well as some experienced heads and importantly

these players are ready to fight for our Club, which is what you as fans will want to see this season.

Pre-Season has been really positive, I am delighted with the attitude the players have shown to their training and the matches we have played. They have all worked tremendously hard to ensure they are fit, sharp and ready for what is going to be a frantic season. The games will come thick and fast, so the boys are going to have match their ability with a strong attitude towards their play. This league is so unpredictable, so we have to ensure we are at it during every match, that is the only way we can have a successful campaign.

I’m gutted that I won’t walk out as Barnet manager in front of our home supporters, but I am also immensely proud to represent a Club that I hold so close to my heart. I will ensure we do everything we can to make you feel pride in your team, whilst also playing some exciting football along the way. I really want to build something here and you are a massive part of that, so even though you can’t be with us in person (for now), I urge you to get right behind us this season!

However you are following the action this afternoon, I hope you can enjoy the match!

Thanks for your support,

FIRSTLY I HOPE EVERYONE IS KEEPING WELL DURING THIS DIFFICULT PERIOD.For us all with the pandemic. Hopefully, the return of football can bring our supporters some much-needed cheer and I hope you are all ready to cheer us on from home.

From the Captain

I just want to add how pleased and honoured I am to continue captaining our Club as we go into the new season. It has been a busy few weeks for us since the boss has come in. It’s been great to start working with him and Jenks, they have got us working exceptionally hard and we want the reward of three points this afternoon for the work we have put in. The new lads have gelled really well with the boys who have stayed on through the summer and I feel we have the makings of a really competitive squad this season. I think it may take a few games for us to get to know each other out there, but we will be doing our best to get off to a good start this afternoon.

It won’t be the same without our fans in the stadium this afternoon and we’re all gutted that you won’t be here to give us that boost. Since I have come in you have all always been really supportive of myself and the team, so I hope this can continue from home for the time being. We will be doing everything we can to bring smiles to faces come 16:45 every Saturday.

Keep well and I really hope we can see you when it is safe to do so!

All the best,

James Dunne

WALKING FOOTBALL HAS RETURNEDTo the Hive London and has been an instant success with sessions played to both Government and FA guidelines promoting the health of body and mind.

Walking football

In the meantime, the team has been working hard in the community and led by Martin Payne, raised £460 for Mind Mental Health Barnet as well as supporting OneStonegrove Community Centre with over £1000 in donations along with regular contributions to the food banks at both the Centre and the Club.

On a lighter note, Shaun Sherrick and Kevin Ziants appeared on Radio Harrow’s sports programme where they promoted all that is good about the sport and Barnet FC.

We are a community team and as such were amazed to be recognised by the Middlesex FA in its 2020 awards, nominated in the category ‘Grassroots Project of the Year’ and Shaun Sherrick also received a nomination as ‘Volunteer of the Year’. This added to our nomination in March at the London Sports Awards for ‘Impact in the Community’, has meant a great year and has been a wonderful achievement by the team.

Back on the pitch, we would like to congratulate both Daniel Casey and Patrick Moorhouse who represented the Republic of Ireland walking football team in their recent friendly versus England at Boldmere FC, another great achievement.

The Barnet WFT would also like to wish Peter Beadle and the team good luck for the new season and may it end in promotion.

Stay safe, stay healthy from us all.

TODAY’SOPPOSITION

Eastleigh were formed by Derek Brooks on 22 May 1946, under the original name of Swaythling Athletic.

In 1950, they joined the Hampshire League but it wasn’t until 1980 the club changed its name to Eastleigh FC.

In 2003, Eastleigh won the Wessex League, after finishing fourth in their first campaign, and transferred into the Premier Division of the Isthmian League with the formation of new divisions. From then on, The Spitfires spentnine years in the Conference South, and were promoted into the National League in 2014. In the club’s debut season, they reached the playoffs but fell short in a defeat against Grimsby Town in the semi-finals.

Since then, the club has reached the third-round of the FA Cup twice, facing Championship opposition. Recently, in the 2018/19 National League season, Eastleigh finished seventh and found themselves in the play-offs for the second time in their history.

The Spitfires saw off Wrexham in a play-off eliminator thanks to a wonder strike from Danny Hollands but lost on penalties in the semi-final at the hands of Salford City, who went on to win promotion to League Two.

Last season, Eastleigh finished in 16thposition after the season was curtailed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The club has undergone a full rebrand in 2020, with a new badge implemented to bring a new identity that the Spitfires can call their own.

Strevens played over 100 times for the Spitfiresas a player and his talent on the field has continued off-it, as he was successful in taking Eastleigh all the way to the National League play-off semi-final in his first season.

The manager’s playing days were spent with 11 different clubs across 19 years, and he is now entering his second full season in charge at the Silverlake.

AFTER A BRIEF FIVE GAMES AS INTERIM MANAGERStrevens was named permanent Eastleigh boss in November 2018.

His electric pace and strong delivery make him a threat from the flanks, and his acrobatic goal celebrations are much loved by the Spitfires supporters. Smart made 38 appearances last season in all competitions for the club, scoring three goals.

TALENTED YOUNG WINGERSam Smart joined the Spitfires from Evo-Stick South side Basingstoke Town FC in July 2019, and has quickly become a fan favourite at the club.

From the Championship with Peterborough United and Ipswich Town as well as spells in League One and League Two.

The Posh paid Crawley Town over £1 million for his signature in 2012 and alongside current team-mate Jack Payne, the pair won the Football League Trophy together during the 2013/14 season.

He continued his goalscoring records in his first season at the Spitfires, finishing as top scorer with 12 goals in last year’s National League campaign.

He is still the club’s second-youngest debutant in their history After several loan spells, he joined Colchester United permanently in 2015, featuring in both League One and Two for the U’s.

He spent the 2017/18 season at Maidstone United, captaining the England ‘C’ team and helping Maidstone survive in their debut National League season. Wynter was ever-present at the heart of Eastleigh’s defence in his debut season for the Spitfires, making 45 appearances and scoring four goals in the run to the 2018/19 playoffs, which earned him the Player of the Season award.

After an injury-hit season in 2019/20, Wynter is back to full fitness for the 2020/21 campaign.

He spent 2019/20 on loan at fellow National League side Dagenham & Redbridge, scoring twice in 11 games. House has settled in well at the Silverlake as the club’s top scorer during the pre-season campaign.

Jerome Binnom-Williams

Ben N

t

He full-back who can also play in the centre of defence joined the Bees having most recently played for fellow

National League side FC Halifax Town. Binnom-Williams played 25 times for the Shaymen

last season, as the Yorkshire based Club finished in the Vanarama National League play-off places, losing out to

Boreham Wood in their play-off eliminator.

Jerome played for Crystal Palace as a youth player after growing up in his hometown of Croydon. During his

time with the Eagles, the defender spent time on loan at Football League clubs including Southend United,

Burton Albion and Leyton Orient. Between those three loan spells, Binnom-Williams racked up almost 50

appearances, highlighting the Football League experience he will bring to the Bees.

A move to Peterborough United followed, before a move to Chesterfield where our new defender made

52 appearances for the Spirites in a two-year spell. His move to former Club Halifax Town followed where

he spent one season, before making the move back to London, to join up with the Bees.

Binnom-Williams has significant experience at the tender age of 26 and has also represented the Three Lions at

u18, u19 and England ‘C’ level.

The 6ft 5 inches defender came to the Club with Football League pedigree, having made 222 senior career appearances to date.

The 27-year-old has played for the likes of Cardiff City, Brentford, Peterborough United, Gillingham and Stevenage, he will be hoping to use that previous experience to the benefit of Beadle’s side.

After starting his career in non-league football, Nugent made a move to the Welsh capital as he joined Cardiff City. He was part of the Bluebirds side that secured promotion to the Premier League in the 2012-13 season.

After tallying up significant Football League experience, Nugent joined the Bees following a successful trial period, following his departure from Stevenage at the end of the 2019-20 season.

Dwight Pascal

Duffus is primarily a midfield player but also has the ability to play in defensive positions too.

The 23-year-old rose through the ranks of Premier League side Everton as a youngster, before making a switch to continue his development with Cardiff City.

During his time with the Bluebirds, Duffus joined up with current Bees boss Peter Beadle as he joined Hereford on loan. Our newest addition has most recently played further down the leagues for Warrington Town.

Tyrone’s versatility will be absolutely crucial when games come thick and fast throughout the 2020/21 campaign. He’s energetic and a determined box to box player, who likes to break up the play.

nMcQueen most recently featured for fellow National League side Dagenham and Redbridge where he made 58 appearances during his two years with the Club. The full-back also scored on six occasions for the Daggers and joins having recently impressed Peter Beadle with his performances in pre-season. The 25-year-old started his career as a youth player at Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur, before moving to Carlisle United where he made 25 senior appearances in his 18-month stay.

A move abroad soon followed for McQueen where he went on to feature for Finnish side Vaasan Palloseura, making 10 appearances before moving back to England where he began his spell with Dagenham and Redbridge.

The 19-year-old rose through the ranks here at The Hive London as a scholar, where he went onto to make his First Team debut, aged just 15 when we took on Peterborough United in the EFL Trophy.

Our new full-back went on to make further appearances for the Club before departing in 2019. Dwight has had a spell at Potters Bar Town since leaving but now returns to The Hive London ready to show Bees fans exactly what he can do at senior level.

Peter Beadle’s newest addition was quick to hail his new boss when he spoke to us following his signing. He said “He’s (Peter Beadle) shown immense trust in me as soon as I came through the door. It has been amazing to have been shown the faith and trust that he has shown in me.

“I’m just so delighted to be back, the boys have been very happy with me, encouraging me and believing in me. I just feel comfortable, I feel I am home again.“It’s been such a weird few weeks being back here again, but it just feels so good to be back here. I want to play as many games as possible and of course I want to be part of a team that gets the Club back into League Two. It’s going to be weird not having the fans back when I make my second debut, but I’ll do everything for those fans cheering us on from home!”

Eliot Richards

Matt

Pres

ton

The 28-year-old can play anywhere in the forward areas but primarily plays in the number 10 role and has racked up over 150 Football League appearances playing for the likes of Bristol Rovers, Exeter City and Tranmere Rovers.

Richards will be no stranger to his new boss either, having previously played under current Bees manager Peter Beadle at Hereford back in 2017.

The attacker has represented Wales at both under 19 and under 21 level earlier in his career. During his time with Bristol Rovers where he made over 100 appearances for the Pirates.

Moves to Exeter City, Tranmere Rovers and Cheltenham Town followed before Richards was forced to take a short time out of the game due to an illness. Richards then rebuilt his career starting with a brief spell in Tampa, USA, before moving back home to play for Merthyr Town. He then joined Beadle at Hereford, where he helped the Club secure promotion to the National League South.

Preston joins the Bees having made well over 100 appearances at Football League level, his signature was highly sought after by a number of fellow National League clubs and this signing comes as a welcome boost with the new season on the horizon. The 25-year-old started his playing days as a youth player at Walsall, where he captained their under-18 side before signing a professional deal in 2014. He went on to make 41 senior appearances for the Saddlers before making a move to Swindon Town in 2017.

The 6ft centre half made a further 21 appearances in his first season with the Robins, scoring on two occasions. Preston’s inaugural and only season with the Wiltshire Club was cut short after he received a serious knee injury which ruled him out for the rest of the campaign.

Our newest recruit, who is likely to partner with fellow new addition Ben Nugent, moved closer to home when he joined his former club Mansfield Town in 2018. He spent two seasons with Mansfield, where he made 68 appearances during his time with the Club. His significant Football League experience will come as a huge boost to Peter Beadle, who will be relying on Preston to be a focal point in our defensive line.

JJ HooperJJ’s early career saw him develop through the youth academy at Premier League side Newcastle United, but his first big season would come with Havant and Waterlooville as he fired 20 goals in all competitions as the Hawks reached the play-offs.

A move to the Football League soon followed as he joined then League One side Port Vale, where he scored 10 goals during his time with the Valiants. After a brief stint on loan at Northampton Town, a move to Grimsby Town followed where he scored a further seven goals.

The 26-year-old has had no problems finding the net at National League level either, having scored 14 goals in 22 appearances for Bromley in the 2018-19 season, before netting a further six strikes at Wrexham in the last campaign.

The 6ft 1 striker is powerful running with the ball and in the air, he can score a variety of different types of goals as well. The signing of Hooper gives Bees boss Peter Beadle more firepower at the top end of the pitch and he’ll be hoping Hooper can link up well with last season’s second-highest scorer Josh Walker.

To: Barnet Football Club

Address : The Hive London, HA8 6AG

From: Carla Devine

After 6 months and 2 days without watching us play, the prospect of a pre-season away at Hitchin was filling me with

so much excitement. The thought of having to set off at 9am however, was not. My Dad and I left Leeds early doors to

set off down the A1 towards the south. We took opportunity of being down this way to drive into Barnet before the

game to wave at my Grandma through her window as we haven’t been able to see her for so long. We grabbed some

lunch in Barnet and made the short drive slightly north from Barnet to Hitchin where we found some on street parking

near the ground. We entered the ground getting a feel for the new normal; a temperature check, sanitising and a one

way system as we got inside. Luckily though, I could still get my hands on a programme for some light reading before the

game. As the teams came out, we headed down to the terrace behind the end we were shooting towards in the first half

and soon the game was underway.

The start of the game wasn’t much to shout about, but on 14 minutes, Hitchin took the lead through Stead. Although I

didn’t think either team was on top up to this point, I was sure we were going to score moments before this goal! As the

half went on, Hitchin didn’t run away with the game and just before half time, Trialist E produced our closest chance of

the game but his shot was saved and we went into half time a goal down. At half time, I had the job of walking around

to the other end of the ground to find a place to stand for the second half whilst my Dad got the drinks. It was lovely to

see some familiar faces on our way round too. Soon enough the teams came out for the second half and ours was a

completely different squad for the next 45 minutes. Soon into the half, it was Trialist F who came close to scoring for us

this time but their goalkeeper made a comfortable save and it ended up being Hitchin who scored, doubling their lead on

63 minutes. We looked more positive the rest of the half with a couple of trialists having their attempt at a goal and

Vasiliou looking impressive. However, no one was able to score and the game finished 2-0 to Hitchin.

We spoke to some familiar faces on our way out, including none other than the legend that is Grazioli who shed some

positivity on the result, pointing out that whilst it was our first pre season game, it was Hitchin’s final pre season! Me

and Dad headed back to the car and started our journey back up the A1 stopping for some tea along the way. We finally

arrived home at 9:30pm and I can safely say my legs didn’t ease back into the discomfort of 400 miles in the car!

Despite so much changing in the time elapsed since our last live game, the joy of watching Barnet is something that has

stayed exactly the same and hopefully it won’t be too long until we’re able to again.

From the Press deskIt’s obviously disappointing not to have our fans with us at The Hive London for today’s game and it’s going to be very strange watching a game without the noise of our supporters. However, that makes it all the more important that I keep you engaged with what is going on at our Football Club and that is exactly what I will continue to do over the course of this season.

It has been a very difficult summer break, with the huge turnover in players etc. but it is brilliant to be back in the press box ready to cover competitive football again. I am extremely grateful for the great relationship I have been able to build with Peter in his short time with us and he is fully on board with trying to bring us all together. I think Peter and his staff have done a great job of getting the new faces in during this tough period. We certainly have an exciting squad, who I hope can produce a successful season for our Club.

A new feature which I feel has been a great success in the previous weeks has been “Inside The Hive” where we give you the lowdown on different topics surrounding both the Club and The Hive London. I am doing my very best to keep you all in the loop and by the comments, I feel you are enjoying that feature, so I will continue to bring that to you as and when there is stuff to share. I do read all of our forums, so in the main, I am in the loop with what your concerns/queries are and where possible I will always do my best to address them. You are the heartbeat of our Club, so I will be doing everything I can to bring all that’s positive about our team.

As a Club we have worked extremely hard to make sure we have a streaming option in place, hopefully you enjoy the stream and it makes up a small part for you not being able to be with us in person this afternoon. Please bear with us if there are any issues, it’s going to be a learning process for us in these early weeks, but we will make sure we get it right!

If you want to contribute to this season’s programme or have any queries please feel free to contact me via [email protected]

Here’s to a successful season!

Come on you Bees!

Adam Rowe

HELLO ALLMay I start by wishing you all well during what has been and continues to be a difficult period for us all.

After being a part of the FC Halifax Town side that finished in the Vanarama National League play-off places last season, Binnom-Williams is excited for a fresh challenge in the 2020/21 campaign.

“It’s been an ongoing thing, I have been training with the boys since the start of pre-season, the boys have made me feel really comfortable and the gaffer has been great. I have worked really hard and the outcome has been me signing on, I am extremely grateful. I am so pleased to be here.

“I knew some of the boys before, having played against them at some of my previous clubs. Some of them live locally to where I live. It’s been a real pleasure to get to know them, they have made me feel so comfortable. It feels like I have been here for two months already, so I am grateful. It seems to be a really good group, everything feels great.”

It has been well documented the turnover of both players and staff the Bees have had since our play-off campaign came to an end on that rainy afternoon in Nottingham. But with Peter Beadle now at the helm, it’s time to focus on the future.

The huge feel you get from all of our new players is the motivation that Beadle provides them to be a success. Binnom-Williams echoed his fellow teammate’s thoughts in his first interview with the Club.

The powerful full-back said: “The boss has been really good and he has really helped me out in my short time here already. During this pandemic, it’s been hard to keep properly fit and he has been huge in helping me get my fitness back up to scratch.

“He’s been good to all of the boys, speaking to us individually and as a team. He is helping us work hard as a team and making sure we stick together. He is a really good gaffer and I am look forward to working with him.”

As well as 25 appearances for the Shaymen last season, Binnom-Williams has also notched up over 50 appearances in the Football League. The full-back has featured for the likes of Chesterfield, Peterborough United, Southend United and Burton Albion.

Manager Peter Beadle alluded to Binnom-Williams experience when he spoke about his new man last weekend. He said “In Jerome’s case he is only 26 and he’s a real coup for us. He has significant experience in the Football League and such a tender age. He is a really good character on and off the pitch, so he’ll be big for us. He has experience of being in winning dressing rooms, which is vital, he understands the ingredients involved at being successful at a higher level.”

When asked about what he can bring to the table, Jerome spoke with confidence on his ability and you get the sense that the Croydon born defender has a point to prove.

“My main attributes are pace and power. I love to get up and down the pitch, hopefully I can also grab a few more goals this season.

“It sounds cliche, but it is all about helping the team and making sure that I defend first. It is important that we keep clean sheets and make things difficult for other teams. But at the other end, I want to get plenty of assists for JJ and the other attackers.

“But mainly I want to get up and down that pitch, doing good things in both boxes. I am here to show everyone what I have got.”

When anyone arrives at The Hive, they are taken aback by the incredible facilities on offer at our home. For many, the site is of Premier League quality and Binnom-Williams felt no different upon his arrival. With a newly laid pitch both inside the stadium and on the training field, things have really come together

For him the objective is clear, he wants to be part of the team that gets the Bees to back to where they belong; the Football League.

“It’s vitally important to take every game as it comes. Everybody in this league shares the same goal of getting promoted. That is of course our target, we want to go up and I feel that with the squad we have there is no reason that we can’t achieve that.

“It’s going to be a very long season and we have to take everything on a game by game basis. It is all about entering each match with the right mentality and making sure we win games. If we’re in a good position, it will be important to keep our eyes on the job throughout the season.”

The 2020/21 season is going to be one like no other and it looks like for at least the foreseeable future, we won’t have the Bee Army to cheer us on. It is going to be tough for players too, it is well mentioned how tough it is to play in a silent stadium.

Binnom-Williams says that it is now down to himself and his teammates to ensure that every Barnet fan watching from home can have something to smile about during this difficult period.

“It is a massive shame that I won’t be able to play in front of our fans. I really do hope that we will have them back in our ground soon.

“Hopefully they’ll be able to watch the games from and see myself and the other new boys that have come in over the summer. We have been working really hard, it’s important that they can see that when they see us play. I really hope they’ll be pleased with me, I am here to work hard for the fans, the team and for myself, we will see what we have achieved at the end of the season.

What’s the Buzz Josh Palmer

Recent weeks has seen several former Bees on the move, and finding new clubs. Firstly is Dominic Vose, who this week moved from Dulwich Hamlet to Kingstonian. Vose played twice for us in early 2013, and was an unused substitute on the bench for the last match at Underhill vs Wycombe Wanderers. Nicky Bailey, who played in black and amber 144 times between 2004 and 2007, and our more times during the 2015/16 season, has now signed for Gosport Borough. Former ‘keeper Dillon Barnes, who was in our academy, has signed on loan for Scottish side Hibernian on loan from Queens Park Rangers.

Jake Cole, who featured at Underhill between 2009 and 2011, has joined Gloucester City, whilst Mark Byrne has returned to his homeland of Ireland, having joined Shelbourne. Academy graduate Tom Day has joined Horsham, Manny Duku has joined Raith Rovers in Scotland, Connor Dymond has joined Cray Valley Paper Mills, and Shane Gore has joined Cheshunt. Also on the move is Jake Hyde, now at FC Halifax Town, Kai McKenzie Lyle, now at Cambridge United, and Jamal Lowe, now at Championship side Swansea City. Adam Mekki is now at Ebbsfleet United and Ismail Yakubu is now at Pen y Bont in Wales.

The FA Cup is at the second qualifying round stage this weekend, with several of our local rivals in action. This includes: St Albans City, who are at home to Hitchin Town, Hemel Hempstead Town, who travel to AFC Dunstable, Biggleswade, who are on the road at Canvey Island, Cheshunt, who host Cambridge City, and Bishop’s Stortford, who play Brentwood Town. Also playing in this round are our opponents in the fourth qualifying round last season, Potters Bar Town, who are away at Concord Rangers, Walthamstow, who play Hornchurch, Waltham Abbey, who play at Bury Town, Harrow Borough, who entertain Cray Valley Paper Mills, Haringey Borough, who are at home against Chertsey Town, and Hendon, who are up against Maidstone United.

The FA Trophy is also at the second qualifying round stage, taking place in two weeks time, with yet more local rivals in action. FC Romania (of Cheshunt) are away at Hastings United, Northwood will be at home to Heybridge Swifts and Hertford Town are away against Faversham Town, whilst Romford are on the road at Tooting and Mitcham United. Barking will be home to Harlow Town, whilst Berkhamsted are away at Chertsey Town and Uxbridge host Waltham Abbey. Ware go to Burgess Hill Town, Welwyn Garden City go to Haywards Heath Town, and Aylesbury United are at home to Tilbury.

Also at the second qualifying round stage is the third FA competition, the FA Vase, and of course there are even more local clubs in action. Harpenden Town will travel to Cogenhoe United, St Panteleimon are away at Rothwell Corinthians, Oxhey Jets host North Greenford United, and Broadfields United are at home to Milton Keynes Irish. Edgware Town play Tring Athletic, Walthamstow host London Lions, in a repeat of the FA Cup extra preliminary round tie last month, Ilford take on Benfleet, Newbury Forest host Burnham Ramblers and Colney Heath go to Holland (based near Clacton, Essex). New Salamis are at home to Cornard United, Baldock Town host Halstead Town, Hoddesdon Town entertain Woodford Town, Hadley play Enfield Borough, Cockfosters go to Park View, London Colney are at Ipswich Wanderers, Clapton go away to Potton United and West Essex host Haverhill Rovers.

It has been revealed that National League clubs will receive an emergency grant from the government to help get the new season started. Officials of clubs and the league have been in contact with the government on the matter, which results in loss of the much needed finances that have been lost due to the ban on fans at the top two steps of non league football due to the Coronavirus pandemic. This comes after fans were due to be allowed into stadiums, in limited numbers, from this weekend, but this plan has been scrapped after a big increase in positive cases of the virus.

Premier League star Jack Grealish has donated £2,000 to former Aston Villa teammate Lewis Kinsella for an operation on knee injury. Kinsella, who played in Villa’s academy, now plays for Aldershot Town, and has spent some time recently raising some money to pay back the Shots, after having picked up the knee injury for the second time in less than twelve months. The 26 year old full back ruptured his medial collateral knee ligament in the first friendly match back last month, picking up a similar injury last year. It is expected that he will spent at least the next six months out treating the injury.

Former Championship and Scotland international striker Ross McCormack has signed for Aldershot Town. Having previously featured for the Scotland national team on thirteen occasions, he has featured in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers and Motherwell, as well as in the Championship with Cardiff City, Leeds United, Fulham, Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest. He has also played for Doncaster Rovers in League One and Melbourne City and Central Coast Mariners in Australias A League, where he played alongside sprinter Usain Bolt at the Mariners. The 34 year old joins the Shots on a one year contract, which runs up until next September.

London Bees, Barnet’s women’s team, have struggled to find their form upon the restart of football this season. Despite finishing last season in their best ever finish, 5th place (with a couple of games in hand over surrounding clubs) when the season abruptly ended in March, the side have lost all three of their opening games of the new campaign, firstly 3-1 away at Coventry United, then 3-0 at home to Liverpool, then a 4-0 routing away at Sheffield United. This run of form has left the side bottom of the table, in eleventh place. Tomorrow they host ninth placed Crystal Palace.

It is pretty common for former players to buy or run their own football clubs, for example Salford City, but it is much less common for A list Hollywood celebrities to do so. But that is the situation that Wrexham find themselves in, with Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney said to be interested in buying the club. The two actors, famous for roles in Deadpool and the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia actors attended a special general meeting (SGM) last week to talk to club members about their visions for the club. The Welsh club have been fan owned since 2011, and a potential £2 million could be invested into the club. Over 95% of Wrexham Supporters Trust members, a total of 1223 individuals, voted in favour of the takeover, with only 31 voting against it.

By GEOFF COLLINS

Barnet FC Fan of the week

1. First game? Tell us your memories

I was taken to watch the Bees for my earliest days as particularly my dad was a great fan. My memories from these days are less than vague for obvious reasons. The first game that I can vividly remember is the 1959 cup final versus Crook Town. I remember this as I watched on the TV (this was one of the first televised games) from outside a TV shop in New Barnet who had put a B&W TV in the window. I know we lost 3 – 2 but it made a huge impression on me.

2 Favourite Barnet player?

Very difficult to choose from the huge number available to me over the years. It feels wrong to single just one out. But as you asked I go for Les Eason from the mid sixties. A prolific goalscorer from what was in those days the inside right position. We used to play 3 2 5 back then and scored huge numbers of goals. Modern tactics are very different. He was also a great provider who worked tirelessly and I guess he was very good as he made things look so easy.

3. Favourite manager?

There have been some very good managers including Paul Fairclough but there is only one stand out for me. Mr Barnet Barry Fry. He was in charge through what for me were the heydays. He not only provided entertainment on the pitch but also off. How many times was he sacked by Stan Flashman! Another historical figure who warrants his own special place in the history of the club. Who other than Barry could be interviewed by police when spotted at midnight on Xmas night rolling the pitch so that it was playable on boxing day. A true legend.

4. Best Away day? 5. Favourite moment as a Bees fan?

This one is easy. The away victory at Fisher Athletic that finally clinched our first promotion to the Football League. I cannot forget Barry running fully across the pitch when the winning goal in the 4 – 2 win went in. I still have the original Barnet Press paper from the following week.

6. What’s the best thing about being a Barnet fan?

From free flowing football particularly in the earlier days , to the huge ups and downs over the last 60 years. From hosting a 3rd round cup tie versus Preston North End( we lost 3 -2 after being 2 – 0 down and playing with only 10 fit men, there were no subs in those days, and our centre forward Roger Figg played as a passenger on the left wing. The winner was a flying own goal header from the great Terry Casey and went in opposite to where I was standing. There were 10000 there that day ) Turning professional and winning our first game

10 – 1 against Hinckley. Promotion to the Football League and subsequently nearly going out of business. Relegation and return to the League over the following seasons. Never a dull moment on and off the field.

7 Favourite goal.

There have been hundreds over the years, Gary Bulls winning volley at Fisher has to be the one.

8 Pre match superstitions.

None. Not built that way.

9. Your all-time Barnet XI from the period you’ve been supporting the Club?

Again almost impossible to say as we have been lucky to have had many many great players over the entire period. I have to mention Jimmy Greaves as his twilight contribution was great but he does not get in my team.

Goalkeeper Gary “sumo” Phillips not only good between the sticks but he was hugely involved in saving the club

Back Three Gordon Ferry Dennis Roach Dave Howells They would have stopped any forward line

Middle of the Park Colin Powell Gerry Ward Alf Darcy Barrie King Andy Clarke Alf made Ron Harris look soft

Up front Les Eason Gary Bull

As I say I could probably produce a few teams but this is what I am going with.

10. Anything you wish to add to your profile?

There is not much I would add to my profile other than to say that supporting the Bees over 65 years has been one the best things I have done and given me so much happiness and on occasions despair ( the final day loss to Torquay still hurts) I have many many memories that will stay with me. One that will probably not be matched is when as a teenager I was stood on halfway with my dad in a cup tie against Dartford and in those days the fans changed ends at half-time, and on this occasion there was a bit of fun and games and a huge crush ensued and I was crushed up against the perimeter fence and eventually bent the steel fencing due to the force of the crush. You could say I left my mark at Underhill.
