One of the most fundamental lessons within self improvement is the significance of the happiness of other people. Through meeting people I have come across many stories of seemingly random acts of kindness to strangers, but just as we have all heard the saying about charity - kindness also begins at home.

Many of us put in extraordinary efforts to keep the boss at work happy or the business ticking over nicely. Of course there is nothing wrong with that, but just how many of us put in the same amount of effort into our closest relationships?

How many of us know the husband that has seemingly no interest in his wife’s day or the wife who seemingly constantly criticises her husband? Let me add something else, what about the people that don’t care to tell each other that they mean the world to one another?

We have all (on more than occasion I am sure) had that shared experience of happiness when quite possibly all it took was the simplest of gestures of put a smile on a loved ones face. It is important to remember that the effort it takes to make someone happy is trivial, even more so when considering the reward.

I used to think that the saying ‘smile and the whole world smiles with you’ sounded a little far fetched but then when you think about it, who are the people that truly make up your world? Their happiness is your happiness after all.

Make your world smile and you will undoubtedly smile with it.

A Happy Life.....

Greatest Olympian in TownSir Steve Redgrave was in town last month to officially open the new Darton College which boasts some of the finest sports facilities in Barnsley. Olympian Sir Steve Redgrave - who won five gold medals for Great Britain - was shown around the advanced learning centres at Darton and Penistone, part of a £1bn Building Schools For The Future project. Sir Steve opened the school in the morning with an inspirational speech to the students before taking part in a local school’s sports day. The event was organised by Mike Wade from Darton College Sports Department and the day was a huge success, with Sir Steve returning to present the children with medals later in the day. He said although he had visited similar schemes around the country, Barnsley’s were among the most impressive!

Tom Ramsay from Barnsley Premier Leisure (manager of the sports centre adjacent to the college) said “Sir Steve not only inspired the students, he also inspired everyone in the room. To be honest it’s been unbelieveable how many children have signed up to our Maxx package and are using the rowing machines since he visited us.”

Striking Entertainment at The Metrodome

www.bpl.org.uk

BPL is set to bowl plenty of people over with the latest addition to the Metrodome Leisure Complex; Metrodome Bowling.

The official cutting of the ribbon to mark the opening took place on Friday 15th July at 10.30am, with the BPL Board of Trustees and Cllr Cheetham attending.

The investment in the new bowling facilities aims to increase the standing that the Metrodome Leisure Complex has in the community and, having already created 15 new job opportunities, Cllr Cheetham recognises the importance of facilities like Metrodome Bowling;

The new attraction opened its doors to the public on Monday 18th July and is the latest addition to the Metrodome Leisure Complex. BPL is confident that Metrodome Bowling will be popular with people from across the Barnsley area and even further afield.

“Metrodome Bowling will reinforce the fact that the Metrodome is a complete leisure experience. People can come here to swim, eat, see a live event and now they can even come to use the bowling alley. The Metrodome Leisure Complex is fast becoming a unique and wonderfully diverse visitor attraction in Barnsley” commented Mick Daley, Manger of the Metrodome Leisure Complex.

The new ten pin bowling alley is equipped with 8 lanes and also features innovative disco lights, smoke machines and top of the range themed bowling games supplied by QubicaAMF.

With children’s parties and corporate events also being catered for, Metrodome Bowling can offer fantastic fun and entertainment for all ages.

Family tickets, which include a swim and a game of bowling, are also available.

“We want the Metrodome Leisure Complex to be a place where families can visit for the entire day and the addition of Metrodome Bowling only strengthens our offering” commented Tim Wilson, Chief Executive of BPL.

Accident management companies are greedy unscrupulous companies profiting from people’s misfortune and sending insurance premiums rocketing. Isn’t that what the media has told you?

Recent reports such as The Cash for Crash Conspiracy article in the Daily Mail and the BBC Panorama programme The Great Car Insurance Swindle send out clear messages about accident management companies and personal injury solicitors and the lengths they will go to. The insurance companies and even the Police don’t emerge unscathed either. But is it really that simple?

There are a lot of cowboys out there, you can’t deny that, but is it a fair statement to say that ALL accident management companies are bad news? We would argue not. “Well you would say that, you are an accident management company!” That’s true, we are. RTR, however, is the respectable face of accident management and we think it’s important that people know that there is a side to accident management that is not only in a different league to the kinds of company the media pillories but is in fact providing a valuable and legitimate service: a service for which there is a genuine need.

The kind of companies featured in these media campaigns give all of us a bad name. Their only objective is to work the system and make a quick buck. A lack of regulation, and even participation by insurance companies and the Police, has allowed this industry to boom. Aside from the clearly criminal actions of those causing accidents to profit from the process (a different issue entirely), the activities of these companies is entirely legal. However, it has reached such a stage that the government has recognised the need to take action and properly regulate the industry. At RTR we say ‘at last!’

They say that schooldays are the happiest of your life. Mine certainly were so it saddens me when I hear stories of how people couldn’t wait to leave school behind and awful memories. Don’t get me wrong, I had some days which I’d rather forget – and some teachers who I’m sure would have suited the waters of Loch Ness more than the school corridors, but on the whole I have much more lovely thoughts of those early days than I do bad ones.

School was so different ‘in my day’ though. Parents only went there to see the Speech Day prizes – if at all. I much prefer the way my sons’ primary school has burned down barriers and mums and dads are welcomed into the weekly assemblies, asked to help dig flower beds, they join in. The downside of that is that when the children leave the school, it’s more of a wrench. As I’m writing this, my younger son has one day left at primary school. And the mothers are stocking up on Kleenex to take into that last assembly tomorrow afternoon. It won’t be a day for wearing mascara. Our farewell will be both fond and terribly sad at once.

My elder son moved up into secondary last year – and that too is a great school and I know the little one will fit in when he goes in September. But I won’t be asked up there to plant seeds, or be served coffee by little waiters wearing red noses. The kids might receive commendations for science or maths, but they won’t get any more certificates for ‘having a smiley face’ or ‘doing some brilliant colouring in’.

I won’t have the mad panic of trying to sew a full Henry VIII costume with 12 hours notice (and yes I managed it!) And I won’t hear those little funnyisms anymore that only little kids can come out with: ‘We’ve been singing the Teletubby carol today.’ ‘What’s the Teletubby carol?’ ‘Go Teletubby mountain, over the hills and everywhere...’

I won’t cluster at the school gates swapping hellos with other mums. As parents we’ve bonded too. We’ve rung each other in panic when we need to know if the kids are in uniform for their days out – and do they take a packed lunch? We’ve cheered together on sports days, laughed and cried at nativities and plays, we’ve been there for each other when the school has closed through snow.

So along with the nice memories I have of my own schooldays, I have a collection of lovely warm recollections of my sons’ Primary days too. Shawlands has been a super school. It’s not every school that can boast an Olympic champion on their books. And not every school that can engender the level of affection that it does from the people it serves.

Thank you friends of Shawlands for everything – but especially for the memories.

Most consumers will research their purchase before buying! So just how do I get more visitors to my website?

There are 3 paths to finding your website, use them all.

Direct Traffic – where people actually type your website address in, it’s amazing how many people do not advertise their web address. Check your business cards, letter heads, adverts, and vehicle signage and email signatures. Make sure you make the most of all your opportu-nities!

Via a Search Engine – this is where they have typed a search term into Google, Bing, or Yahoo to look for you or your services. If your website has not been optimised for these search terms then it’s unlikely that your website will appear on the first search page. You can find out how many people are looking for your services this way, you would be amazed at how many potential customers are looking for you already.

Via a Link – this is where someone actually clicks on a live link to arrive at your site. How many links do you have out there on the internet acting as a little sign posts to your business? You cannot have enough, they can be listings in directories, videos on YouTube or articles on a blog, adverts on other websites, tweets, postings on FaceBook etc. These act like little conveyor belts delivering visitors to your website. Indeed the more you have, the better the chance that search engines will list your business when people are searching for your services.

For some local businesses it is possible to top Google quite quickly, but if you trade nationally then you have more competitors and hence being found is a greater challenge, but today there are lots of methods to achieve just that. But beware of offers to get you onto page 1 of Google! Many of these are unscrupulous giving you an advert to get you there, it could be an advert that was cheap to buy because the keywords are not searched for? You have paid your money, the listing is at the top of Google but it doesn’t really bring in any visitors. What you really need is be at the top of the search engine for what people are actually looking for! The most successful websites require ongoing upkeep of their content, keywords and referring links!

You can learn to do this for yourself, find out how at our free weekly webinars, see our website for details.

Simply get in touch with IRUN, we are more than happy to sit down and talk to you about what you want to achieve, large or small, there is an effective and affordable solution for you all, one that will get visitors to your website.

FAMILY MATTERS WILLS, PROBATE, LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY CONVEYANCING (RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL) DEBT RECOVERY

Divorce can be daunting but with the right help you can steer clear of pitfalls and achieve a sensible solution to the marriage, children and money issues.

Your solicitor is there to guide you through the process and to offer sensitive independent advice.

Your solicitor will:-

Explain the process.

Start the action for you and once under way keep you informed of developments.

Getting a divorce is a relatively straightforward process.

It is much less straightforward to sort out practical issues such as:-

Where each party will live.

Who gets what.

Arrangements for the children.

It is wise to get legal and practical advice from your solicitor about your rights and the options available. Your solicitor has a professional duty to try to settle these issues out of Court if at all possible. It is in the interests of all parties to co-operate to try to achieve this. Your solicitor will explain the alternatives to Court action such as, for example, mediation.

It is extremely important, however once agreement is reached that an agreement is recorded in a formal Court Order which will set out the terms of the agreement in a way that is legally enforceable. Generally this also prevents either party from re-opening issues relating to finance in the future thus providing certainty and peace of mind.

A negotiated settlement is by far the best and cheapest solution to issues surrounding the divorce and your solicitor can help do this for you. If you do end up in a trial of the issues in Court your solicitor will advise to try to manage this in the most efficient and effective way to minimize distress and legal costs.

Whatever your circumstances a family law solicitor has the knowledge and experience to represent your interests. Charges can vary between solicitors so do check in advance to find out how much they charge. Bear in mind the most important thing is to find a solicitor who is approachable, sympathetic and whose advice you understand.

We offer a 30 min free advice appointment to give you some initial advice and outline the legal implications, given your own personal circumstances.

Avoiding Conflict – How to have a Good Divorce.

Russell Eaton are winners of the L’Oreal Professional 2011 Colour Trophy!!

The prestigious L’Oréal Professional Colour Trophy is the longest running hairdressing event in the calendar and 2011 marked its 56th year. A unique combination of creative hairdressing, acclaimed judges, live fashion shows and fantastic prizes continue to make the competition highly anticipated every year.

It was a star studded event on Monday 4th July at Grosvenor House in Mayfair London that Russell Eaton Salon were picked by a group of highly acclaimed judges, including Trevor Sorbie and Errol Douglas, to win the highly sort after award.

It all started back in April when over 1200 photographic entries were judged by the industries leading hairdressers including Charles Worthington MBE, Chris Williams, Trevor Sorbie MBE and Sally Brooks. Only 455 regional finalists were chosen to take their hairdressing skills to the seven regional finals.

We were one of 3 teams picked to go through to the Grand Final in July where on the day Jade and Emily from our salon in Leeds created a beautiful colour and cut which represented our predicted trends for Autumn Winter 2011. The styling was created by Barnsleys very own Pollyanna again portraying trends for Autumn Winter.

All we had to do then was wait nervously for the results at the glamorous awards ceremony and to our delight we won!

We are so proud of our team for all their effort and commitment.

This is the second time Russell Eaton Salon has won the award which is testament to our dedication and passion in what we do.

Look after your feet by Maria Nortcliffe - Cert. E.C.B.S. MAR, MICHT

Appointments also available at Skin &Tonic334a Sheffield Road, Birdwell, Barnsley Telephone: 01226 747727

Your feet are amazing they are the most complicated bone structure in the body consisting of 26 bones and over 100 ligaments and the skin on your feet has more than 7,000 nerve endings.

They carry our whole body weight sometimes evenly distributed between the two feet but often balanced on one. They absorb pressure of up to one and a half times our body weight as we walk about. And how do we treat them in return? Appallingly! We stick them into a pair of socks and shoes for most of the year and allow them out when the sun shines. We wear ill-fitting and unsupportive shoes and are surprised when we suffer from areas of hard skin, corns and calluses. We talk about our feet as if we really don’t like them some even profess to hate their feet!

As we go about our daily lives foot problems can occur quickly. Remember your feet take the whole weight of your body so foot problems can soon lead to discomfort and begin to affect the way you walk. Our bodies are finely balanced and feet play a significant role in that delicate balance. A foot problem can go on to affect knees, hips, spine and shoulder pain. So just think that with a small amount of effort put into looking after your feet many problems can be prevented later. So what should you be doing to help look after your feet?

As a reflexologist I meet countless people who, on removing their footwear, apologise for the state of their feet. I can honestly say that for the most part their feet are no real problem. They assume that because their feet have been tucked away inside footwear for a while that they will emerge sweaty and smelly.

Although there are causes for sweaty feet (which I will discuss later) I have never found a foot that cannot be worked and most feel better at the end for the treatment. Most will say they feel as though they are walking on air when they leave the room.

After a day’s hard work try to give your feet a treat. Try to spend some time walking bare foot. This helps to give your feet some fresh air and it also allows your feet to access, and experience a different surface which is good exercise for your feet.

Make it a habit to wash your feet with soap and water every night before you go to bed. Any dirt left on the skin can become irritated and infected. After washing dry your feet thoroughly and apply a moisturising cream. Remove any hard skin and calluses regularly with a pumice stone or foot file. Always trim toe nails straight across. Do not shape down at the edges as this can cause in-growing toe nails. Change your socks daily.

Why are feet sometimes sweaty?

First a couple of facts:

• There are more than 125,000 sweat glands on each foot, a more than anywhere else in the body.

• Your feet produce an eggcup’s worth of sweat each day.

It is therefore no wonder that when we are standing all day feet can feel uncomfortable and we suspect that they smell.

So why do feet smell?

Almost anyone can have smelly feet but you are mor susceptible if you are a teenager, are pregnant, are under mental or emotional stress, stand up all

day at work, have a medical condition called hyperhydrosis , are taking certain prescribed medications

The medical name for smelly feet is bromodosis. Smelly feet is a common, all-year round problem. It can be embarrassing and unpleasant for you and everyone around you. Teenagers and pregnant women are especially prone because their hormones can cause them to sweat more.

You’re also more prone to foot perspiration if you’re on your feet all day, if you’re under a lot of stress or you have a medical condition called hyperhidrosis, which makes you sweat more than usual. Fungal infections, such as athlete’s foot, can also lead to bad foot odour. Bacteria on the skin breaks down sweat as it comes from the pores. A cheesy odour is released as the sweat decomposes.

As your feet sweat during the day they become damp- ideal conditions for bacteria to grow. If you don’t allow your shoes to dry out properly the bacteria continue to breed. The next day you are perpetuating the warm moist conditions when you wear the same shoes and creating the perfect conditions for bacteria to thrive.

According to podiatrists the way to keep feet smelling fresh is simply down to good personal hygiene and not wearing the same shoes two days in a row. Fresh socks daily, ideally cotton or wool, is also recommended. Try using medicated insoles, which have a deodorising effect, in your shoes. You could also try try feet-fresh socks. Some sports socks have ventilation panels to keep feet dry, and antibacterial socks are impregnated with chemicals to discourage the odour-producing bacteria that feed on sweat. Wear leather or canvas shoes, as they let your feet breathe, unlike plastic ones. Wear open-toes sandals in summer and go barefoot at home in the evenings.. This allows feet to breathe.

As always, if you are unsure about what is happening on your feet you need to seek the help of your doctor or a foot health professional. The more you pay attention to your feet the better they will feel – and the better you will feel about your feet. And you know what reflexologists say. Your whole body is reflected onto your feet so if you like your feet your are more likely to feel positive about yourself.

Give your feet a treat today.

Strength Training

www.bpl.org.uk

It is widely known that by the time people reach the age of 30, they begin to develop a lower lean muscle mass and a higher fat mass. There is a specific type of training that can help with this; Strength Training.

There are two ways to counter this; increase your aerobic activity to counter the increase in fat mass or add Strength Training to counter the decrease in lean muscle mass.

When most people think of Strength Training they immediately think of big muscles. Strength Training is not about building muscles but activating existing muscle so they are in a state of tone more often.

Not only will Strength Training increase your lean muscle mass, but it helps burn body fat. The best way to do this is to do Total Body workouts. It isn’t about hitting the weights and building big scary muscles.

For the best results, try and fit in three Total Body workouts a week; swimming is an excellent way of doing this as not only does it work the majority of muscles in your body but the cardiovascular benefits are there too.

The other benefit of this is that you maximise the calories you burn in a session and it even helps to increase your metabolism (these short term increases last anywhere from 24-48 hours after your workout).

While swimming alone won’t help to increase lean muscle mass, it is a good way to get all your muscles used to working out at the same time. Circuit training, done with the correct stations, can also provide be a great Total Body workout.

The best advice would be to exercise regularly and try and work as many muscles as possible. All our gym instructors at BPL can help you with training plans suited to reaching your own goals-just come and have a chat with us!

Oesophageal andGastric Cancer Awareness

01226 43 3979 or e-mail: [email protected]

Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer are the fifth commonest cause of cancer deaths in the UK, and yet, many people do not know what and where the oesophagus (gullet or food pipe) is, or the difference between their stomach and their belly/tummy.

Oesophageal and Gastric Cancer could have been prevented in about half of the diagnosed cases with simple measures of prevention and changes to lifestyle taken onboard and maintained.

What is prevention? Cancer Prevention is action taken to lower the chances of getting cancer. Some risk factors can be avoided, such as smoking, obesity, and excess alcohol intake. Avoiding risk factors and increasing protective factors may lower your risk of developing a cancer but this does not mean that you will not ever get cancer.

Cancer Presentation: One of the problems of these cancers is that patients often present late in their clinical course and are not able to be offered a chance of cure.

The Northern Region of England together with Scotland has the highest incidences of these cancers in Europe.

The general public are encouraged to be aware of these cancers and symptoms associated with them. This is so that patients will present to their GPs earlier in their clinical course.

DO YOU HAVE ANY OF THE FOLLOWING?

Feel full earlier than you would expect when eating?

Reflux that is persistent?

Excessive or unexplained weight loss?

Swallowing difficulties or regurgitation food?

I really could not bring myself to write about the Autumn/Winter ’11 trends in August! However as the shops are so chock full of bargains and following the tips last month about key items to buy in the sales, here are some ideas about how to get a bargain AND wear it into autumn.

Witten by Kirstie Trasler Stylist & Image Consultant

www.style-consultant.co.uk

Pssst! Heads up for Autumn…….

Colour Buy jewel tones. Think emerald, ruby, amethyst, sapphire, garnet and citrine. Colour blocking for summer, shades and tones of the same colour head to foot for autumn. Think luxury materials, sequins and silks add to the luxe look, but not the price.

Coast

Sixties shapes Graphic prints, straight shift dresses, mini skirts and kitten heels. The kitten heel abounds in the sales, try Hobbs, Office, Topshop and Kurt Geiger. Tops or jackets with bracelet sleeves (sleeve ends above the wrist) are evocative of this era and are really flattering to large busts and those with small bone structures.

Feminine glamour Whether its 40’s or 70’s inspired, the flowing material, draping and sheer femininity is set to stay. Buy draped dresses, wide legged trousers, pencil skirts and boxy structured bags (in faux skin of course!) Get the pearls out, whether grannies real ones or long ones from Claire’s accessories.

Zara

River Island

Have a fun summer and be ready to look good into September!

Kirstie

Fashion and function don’t always go hand in hand, but this scoop neck panelled swimsuit is perfect for poolside posing and in-pool performance!

The contemporary take on a classic sporty style make this striking blue swimsuit with cut-out detail a must-have wardrobe addition that will see you through a Summer of style and a Winter of work-outs!

Watch this space.....

....for the competiton of a lifetime brought to you by the Barnsley

Eye and the Holiday Inn. NOT TO BE MISSED!!

Children from Dodworth St. John’s Primary School have left a lasting reminder of life as it is today in a new garden at Holiday Inn, Barnsley.

A time capsule has been buried by 24 Year 2 pupils to mark the completion of the £150,000 ‘secret garden’ project at the 4-star Hotel.

Everyday items such as newspaper clippings, coins and shopping receipts as well as recent royal wedding memorabilia, family photographs and personal letters we’re placed inside the capsule. Each item said something about the world we live in and will give future generations a glimpse into Barnsley life in 2011.

The capsule was buried at the entrance to the garden and marked with a plaque with a date for opening, in 2036 – 25 years from now. The children we’re among the first to see the garden ahead of its official opening by The Mayor Barnsley on July 8th.

The ‘Secret Garden’ Project, which has taken 3-months to complete, forms part of a plan of ongoing investment by the hotel to further enhance its facilities. The new 35m x 14m garden, which has been designed by Sheffield-based landscape architects, Dragonfly Landscapes, features bright flowerbeds, a grand gazebo, walkways and seating. Its design was inspired by the many gardens of China that are created to stimulate the senses and provide an area of tranquillity and well-being.

Jason Hiley, general manager of Holiday Inn, Barnsley said: “We’re delighted with the new secret garden and having local youngsters mark its completion with a time capsule seemed very fitting. The hotel has been a proud fixture in the Barnsley landscape for many years and we felt that this was the ideal way to celebrate the new garden with the local community.”

Ian Goddard, head teacher at Dodworth St. John’s Primary School, added: “This is a fantastic opportunity for our pupils to leave their mark for future generations of their local community.”

THE BARNSLEY EYE RESTAURANT AWARDS

The aim of these awards is to raise awareness of just how many excellent restaurants Barnsley has to offer.

24 Eye on Food

Here in Barnsley we have some fantastic restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. The Barnsley Eye have teamed up with local businesman Paul Hoyle of Road to launch this award.

The prize for the overall winner will be a prestegious engraved plaque plus two months free advertising in The Barnsley Eye Magazine. You may remember Paul as “Party Paul” from channel 4’s Come Dine With Me. Paul will be reveiwing restaurants around Barnsley and scoring them on specific criterior. Each month there will be a different catagory. This month it was Idian Cusine.

Curry Mahal, Dodworth

Anyone who know me knows I LOVE my Curries. No I mean I truely LOVE my Curries and when I get asked to go to review a Indian restaurant I’m off like a shot.

Curry Mahal as I’m sure you all know has been in Dodworth forever. The owner has had it for 12 years, and it’s reputation speaks for itself so he must be doing something right and I can see why people go back again and again.

Now don’t forget it is not 5 star surroundings - they know that, and it is not silver cutlery ect but the food believe me is absoluley top draw... with big helpings and friendly, helpful staff.

Curry Mahal is one of those places that you remember for the food.

I liked it 8/10

9

THE WINNER

Cafe Naaz, Wath-Upon-Dearne

Called Cafe Naaz because the owner is called Naaz. Simple as that! Naaz is nice bloke, a very welcoming, professional gentleman. He has a great place in the centre of Wath Upon Dearne which has a lovely village feel to it.

I hear all the time that Indian Restaurants are they all the

same? Well certainly not this one. Cafe Naaz is very different and here you can pre order lamb and chicken that has been cooked overnight. I must admit it is simply to die for trust me. You can have anything as hot or as mild as you like even if you’re not into spicy Indian food give this place a go you will be impressed.

I gave Cafe Naaz 9/10 and that is only because it is a bit out of town (and I had to drive) But do’t let that put you off...if it had been round the corner it would have been a 10 and remember when you go ....don’t forget to tell them Party Paul sent ya!

It is not just domestic properties that can benefit small to medium size businesses with a suitable commercial roof can save £3500 worth of electricity and generate around £15,000 a year from the feed in tariff, again guaranteed for 25 years. (Based on a SAP Calculation for a 50kw system).

This is why so many companies are giving them away for free, as they too want to cash in on the scheme and benefit from the 12-17% return on investment.

What is the concept behind Monkey RADIO? To provide people with a fun fresh new dance station where people can listen to quality tunes that they would not normally hear on mainstream radio.

When are where did you come up with it idea? I came up with idea while reading Chris Evan’s autobiography whilst on holiday in February 2011!

What age group are you targeting? All age groups and genders! There will be something for everyone!

Will it have regular DJS at regular times doing regular spots? Yes of course - we have over 20 djs all doing regular weekly shows playing all different types of quality dance music!

Is it just going to cover the Barnsley Area? Yes primarily. it is for our area but with it being an online station your tune in anywhere in the world!

Where is it based? Its Barnsley BORN AND BREAD!

It’s a Dance station but will you pick up on news stories topics events for the area? Yes most defiantly! We urge anyone to contact us with any interesting stories or events and we will support them live on air!

Will you be doing any competitions? Yes! All the time we have loads of free tee shirts, mugs, car stickers & monkey radio CDs to give away!

How did the monkey radio launch party go at Bomfest 2011? Really amazing the monkey dance tent was really busy all day everyone really enjoyed themselves. We had on 15 monkey radio DJs playing from 12 noon till 1am! We played all different styles of dance music throughout the whole day!

BOMFEST is now in its 8th year, and from its humble beginnings in 2004, it has become a flagship event for its support of quality unsigned live music from the local area as well as showcasing international stars on the main stage.

This year saw a great set from BOM faveorite Tom Hingley with his band The Lovers on the main stage, but there were also fantastic slots from Seventh Son, X-Rippers, Lost Rites and CF Bundy.

This years Urban Area was the biggest yet with Miss B and Nick from Krush/Monkey providing Monster Vibes! The Urban Stage provided the best underground Producers, Artists, DJs and MCs the region had to offer....proving yet again that BOMfest continues to grow year in year out.

Deer Shed 2011

Set in rural North Yorkshire countryside, the second Deer Shed festival has become one of the most diverse kid freindly festivals out there.

A genuinely family friendly place but with enough decent bands to warrant the very reasonable £59 ticket price. The mid-afternoon bands seemed to be picked to mix with real ale and sunshine, mainly sharing their sound with Mumford & Sons. There was a great set from Marcus Foster who I was expecting to be sat on stage on his own with an acoustic guitar but was backed by a fantastic bluesy rock band who were bang on the money!

The acts at Deer Shed were “staggered” so you never got to miss out on anyone and could go from Main Stage to Second Tent with ease. Luckily that gave me the opportunity to see both headline acts Nashville’s Caitlin Rose and Manchester’s I am Kloot..... Both of whom were superb.

Other evening highlights bandwise included a rocking set from The Go Team and an infectious, banter strewn performance from Sunderland Frankie and the Heartstrings.

All in all a fantastic festival. Special mentions must also go to the Gothic Morris Dancers, The Ben Potter Birds of Prey display and the selection of hand pulled Real Ales and Ciders available at the bars all weekend....The Pear Cider (above) was cracking.... Cheers! Gaz

Future West Promotions the promoter of the Future West ACU British Supercross Championship are excited to announce the return of the series to Sheffield at the Motorpoint Arena on Saturday 22nd October 2011.

Sheffield previously held 12 consecutive British Supercross events until 2008 when Heath Voss, Tommy Searle, Colton Facciotti and Jeff Alessi wowed the crowds. The very first Sheffield event featured Jeremy “Showtime” McGrath, Damon Bradshaw and event winner Larry Ward back in 1997. The last Future West event at Sheffield was the 2009 FIM Indoor Enduro World Cup event which drew rave reviews from all in attendance.

Future West’s John Hellam had this to say: “After a three year absence of Supercross from Sheffield we are confident the venue and the Sheffield faithful are set for the return of British Supercross to its historical home”.

SX1 and British Supercross defending champ CCM’s Tom Church will be ready to take on the best of the Brits including fellow team mate and former British Motocross champion Stephen Sword. Defending SX2 champion Jack Brunell is also expected to come out charging in the first round of the series along with a long list of top British riders.

Tickets, priced £38, £35 & £29 (£10 reduction for Under 12’s and OAP’s). Family tickets for 2 adults & 2 under 12’s available priced £100. To book call the Arena Box Office on 0114 256 56 56, visit the venue in person or book online at
