Experience Barnsley openedlast week – showcasing theproud history of our town andhighlighting the wonderfulachievements of our people.Yet some people still ask me‘why do we need a museum?’

I think that as individuals,as we try to grow anddevelop, we feel a need tofind out who we are, whomade us and what shaped usin our past.

The past helps us identifywho we are today. I believethe same is true collectively.By examining the roots of ourtown we can work out whyBarnsley is the town it istoday.

We then take thisknowledge, both individuallyand collectively, and use it toinform our decisions abouthow we should grow. Welearn from mistakes andsuccesses alike, using them tohelp chart our future direction.

Children have an innatesense of curiosity about theirown past, often askingrepeatedly for stories about

parts of their childhood whichthey can’t remember properly.Just as we recount stories ofour families’ past to ourchildren, we need to passionimportant stories about ourtown as well.

We need to explain whythe closure of the pits stillprovokes such an emotionalresponse in so many of us,even these many years later.We must show them howBarnsley people looked afterone another in such difficulttimes, how some of usactually owe our lives to oneanother – to explain whycommunity spirit is soimportant and why it mustcontinue.

We must instil in themthe same pride which ourgrandparents had in our town– and give them examples ofour achievements, not justvague words.

Museums are a visiblesign of civic pride – especiallywhen planted squarely in theheart of the community, as isthe case with Experience

Barnsley sitting within ourtown hall. But they are also asign of a community which iswilling to be honest aboutitself – to reflect on its pastand learn for the future.

People also ask me ‘canwe afford a museum in thistime of austerity andcutbacks?’

My answer is that it isprecisely because of thesechallenging economic timesthat we need a museum.During my time as ShadowCulture Minister I have learntmuch about how culture,tourism and heritage can actas drivers for jobs and growth.

You only have to look atthe fight put up recently tosave the National Coal MiningMuseum in Wakefield, theNational Media Museum inBradford and the NationalRailway Museum in York frompotential closure to know howimportant these institutionsare to their local economies.

Museums help stimulateinterest in a town, drawing invisitors from outside. The real

challenge for us, havinginvested in ExperienceBarnsley, is to now make themost of it. We need to ensurethat it is part of a joined upoffer with other localattractions, such as theCooper Gallery, theLamproom Theatre and TheCivic – and in the wider localarea with the YorkshireSculpture Park, ElsecarHeritage Centre, Cannon HallFarm and Wentworth Castle –pulling visitors into Barnsleyand contributing to our localeconomy.

That is why I am pleasedthat Experience Barnsley willbe a free attraction. Bringingpeople to Barnsley is aninvestment well worth making.

So next time your childor grandchild asks about theirchildhood or yours, take theopportunity to not just tellstories about their past butabout the town’s past too – bybringing them along to ourtown’s museum – ExperienceBarnsley.

‘Reflect on the past tolearn for the future’

A series of short filmsfeaturing Barnsley folk will bepremiered at a communityhealth exhibition next month.

The event, run by SouthWest Yorkshire PartnershipNHS Foundation Trust, willbring together a variety ofBarnsley NHS services.

More than 50 localpeople have taken part in thefilming.

Sean Rayner, districtservice director for Barnsley,said: “Our trust has morethan 2,000 staff across theBarnsley borough who, everyday, help people to reachtheir potential and live well in

their community. “Our films will show

how, through the services weprovide, we make a realdifference to lives.

“We really want toencourage people to attendand find out how their localNHS could help them or thepeople they care for.

“The films will also bemade available online and via NHS services after theevent.”

The viewings will takeplace at The Civic on July 16from 10am to 11am and11.30am to 12.30pm.

The event is free and noticket is required.

A tortoise found ‘leggingit’ down a main road inRoyston has beennicknamed ‘Little Mo’after the Olympicchampion Mo Farah.

Sally Dobson, ofChevet Rise, Royston,said the male tortoisewas seen making his waydown Cross Lane ‘atspeed’.

“He is delightful andcan walk quite fast, that’swhy we’ve called himLittle Mo after Mo Farah.

“I’m wondering,because he can move sofast, if he has wanderedquite a way from home,”said Sally, who’s beendoing her homework ontortoises since shestarted looking after him.

“I know he’s a boybecause he has a longtail tucked under his shelland females have a shorttail that sticks out. I thinkhe’s a Horsfield tortoise.

She said Cross Laneis a busy road and thelady who found himpicked him up andassumed he had comeout of her mum’s gardenand put him back.

“That’s when mumcalled me saying ‘you’llnever guess what I’vefound!”

If no-one comesforward to collect ‘LittleMo’ the Dobson familywill adopt him, Sally hassaid.

An anonymous painter hasdonated a piece of their artto the Pollyanna store –creating quite a stir andsomething of a mystery.

The detailed oilpainting was left on a tableoutside the cafe entrance inGeorge Yard in the towncentre.

It depicts a scene insidethe cafe and is so good thatowner Rita Britton says:“Every single person in thepainting is immediatelyrecognisable.”

Rita herself appears inthe work of art – as does herhusband Geoff, several otherstaff members and regularcustomers.

There was no note withthe painting, the only writingon the canvas reveals it wascreated in 2012 by ‘GorillaArt’.

Rita says she is baffled asto the artist’s identity and howthey managed to create suchaccurate likenesses withoutever being seen by customersor staff.

“Obviously if someone hadbeen sitting here day after daydoing sketches we would have

noticed,” she said.“So either they took

photographs with a mobilephone then used thephotographs to create thepainting or they have a truly

remarkable memory for facesand features.

“It has obviously been lefthere as a gift and I am thrilledand we will be hanging it withinthe cafe area.”

Talks are taking place to resolve the dispute betweenUnite the union and the Yorkshire AmbulanceService.

A spokesman for Yorkshire Ambulance Servicewelcomed the news that Unite has withdrawnplanned industrial action which was due to takeplace on June 22.

Both parties have confirmed their commitmentto the talks, which will take place over the comingweeks.

The chief executive ofthe Barnsley Hospicehas left his position bymutual agreement.

Ian Carey left hispost on June 21, but theHospice declined to saywhy.

It said in astatement: “The Boardof Barnsley HospiceAppeal and Ian Careyhave agreed that Ian willleave his position aschief executive bymutual agreement.

“The Board wish totake this opportunity to

thank him for his timeand efforts given to thehospice during his timeas chief executive.”

Chairman RichardHorner said: “It wasnothing to do with cuts,he just decided hewanted to go. We will

be looking to find asuitable replacement inthe coming months.”

He said thehospice was in a goodposition to embraceand adapt to thechanges and challengeswithin the NHS.
